My aunt brought some dodgy chinese bootlegs back from Malaysia back in the day. This was one of them.

The subtitles were great, as "Ray" was translated to Thunder and
"Rachael" was translated to Thunder Silces.

I haven't seen it in a while but I remember wondering why it wasn't more popular.
Yeah, always wanted to know more about this myself. There were murmurs however that Spielberg blames Cruise's antics at the time, but that doesn't change the fact that movie still did very well on its own upon its release.

Preach; it is one of the best American disaster movies of the 2000s and Spielberg's 2nd-best film in said era.

The tension and intrigue throughout is near unrelenting and some scenes are beautifully, if starkly, shot.

Also has a genuinely heartfelt ending that counters the modern nihilistic trend -- though it's fairly corny, yes.

It definitely has problems when viewed as a whole movie, but it's legitimately got some of the greatest sci-fi scenes EVER.

The final 1/3 of the movie is weak, especially the ending, but it was a great movie to see in theaters.

Justin chatwin is really awful. I think it's too hated, but it's a very inconsistent movie.

i liked the movie in spite of itself. I hated the people in it. But the set pieces were well done. And the aliens were interesting to watch too.

not a great movie, but a nice looking alien flick .

The end absolutely killed this movie for me. Up until then, it completely destroyed the original. I really bad ending can just absolutely wreck a movie for me. Spielberg's AI did the same thing.

I hated it. The army nuked my city.

Not to derail, but in ID4 when they nuked Houston.....my whole theater cheered. I live in Houston, btw

The kids ruined the movie for me. I have never seen such unrelentingly annoying kids. They just... they were terribly written. An absolute cyst on an otherwise decent film.

I thought it was a movie that started out really strong, and got progressively worse the longer it went on.

Best post 9/11 movie of the decade.
It really did bring a confluence of a lot of the events of the time and events Spielberg held close to.
9/11, the Iraq War, the Holocaust, and Spielberg melded these three themes together magnificently.

A movie that strikes at the very centre of the ensuing panic and confusion from the 9/11 attacks and captures American society in the face of extermination.
Tom Cruise clouded in dust, masses of people simply being liquidated were all very effective imagery which drew from 9/11 and The Holocaust.

Invasion by an Alien also parallels the Iraq war and links the whole 'zeitgeist' of the time together... i mean how did we feel when when some martians outta nowhere invade and starts causing immense death and destruction? Probably exactly how the iraqis feel. We dont know why they're exactly here and what they want and neither did the Iraqis when suddenly the whole country was plunged into a decade long war.

One thing i always like to say is that 9/11 made great reference material for VFX people on how to animate buildings collapsing and smoke.
You look at Armageddon (pre 9/11) and buildings collapsing was goofy and unrealistic but post 9/11 every building getting destroyed evoked 9/11 (example Man of Steel, BvS)

The first hour or so is some of Spielberg's best work. After the son runs off and they get to that basement though, it's probably best just to turn it off.

Dakota Fanning acts exactly like a child would in those circumstances; it's a very natural performance. I've never understood why people hate the son surviving. Do people hate that Tom Cruise survives his unbelievable adventures (I take small issue with the grenade belt)? The son also acts just like his father. "I have to see" is what Tom does at every turn when he should have noped-out from the beginning.

I lived in DC when Independence Day came out and my theater cheered the White House blowing up.

I really liked it and even have the DVD.

However, the conclusion to how the aliens lose is still one of the dumbest, most braindead ideas I've ever heard of for a scifi story.

Pretty much. Imo it retroactively shits on whatever good thing the movie had going. Such a stupid ending.

For a movie called War of the Worlds there is very little war in the movie. Also the whole buried machine millions of years ago thing is dumb. And why wouldn't the first thing Tom Cruise do is turn on the news when he got to his ex wifes house. i got alot if complaints about the movie but I still liked it. The original 50's version is still superior.

There's a really good Lindsay Ellis video were she brings up how audiences react differently to the kids in the original Independence Day and the kids in War of the Worlds. The ID kids are barely human in their characterisation, meant to be as cute and pitiful as possible, thereby more palatable, whereas the portrayel of children in War of the Worlds is too confrontational for most people.

I would go a step further and say the people who hate Dakota Fanning in War of the Worlds are lacking in basic empathy. That is exactly how a real girl would react, hell I've seen real adults react far worse to far away less.

I remember watching this in theaters and being fucking terrified.

EDIT: Oh yeah the ending is comically bad. Why did they feel the need to do that?

It's a grim movie, almost too grim. Spielberg kept the son alive only so that this film wouldn't be put on IMDB most feel-bad movies list with Requiem for a Dream and Happiness.

I own the bluray for this. It's a great movie. It's shows next to no blood but the imagery is amazing. That guy getting skewered behind the car was not shown but you felt it the way it was done. Great movie. I don't even mind the ratty kid surviving but it would have been a better movie had he died

360 car pan around shot was amazing and added to the sense of delirium when they were escaping

It was alright but doesn't come close to the originals sheer spectacle. The effects of the first are really fantastic. You can see some of the blue screen artifacts and wires but that's beside the point and they don't detract from the experience at all.

Disagree. I was a big fan of the H.G. Wells novel when I was a kid, and this movie captures the spirit of that novel so well.

I love the river scene where the alien tripods are viewed from a distance as they are devastating the hills of the countryside. That is exactly how I imagined this story in my head when I used to read the novel during childhood. It's pure cinematic brilliance. It captures the spirit of the novel much better than the 1953 version did.

It's a damn shame, because it is a great film, but the ending is such a disappointment. The book was written in a time where an ending like that would be interesting, but in a film in the 21st century? Comeon now. Aliens so advanced, didn't take into account bacteria? Get outta here. Just tarnishes and cheapens the whole thing.

The blu ray has one of the sickest sounding lossless tracks I've ever heard, especially the storm in the beginning.

It's one of those good movies I've only managed to see once. After seeing the very good 'Ready Player One' this morning...I think I'll give this another watch because of you OP!

Incredible visuals and sound design, but the character arcs of the main cast are absolutely wack. The scene where the kid runs into a giant ball of flame is idiotic, particularly from Tom Cruise's character. And that ending is bullshit.

For me its a great, great movie that was ruined by the one thing that should have really grounded it.. the kids. I love kids in movies, when done right otherwise avoid at all costs. I feel like the screenplay and role of the kids in the film was good but the actors hired did such an off putting job that it was distracting. Take away the kids and the film falls flat, but replace the child actors and you might have a top 20 film.

The kids are super shitty instead of being endearing. Good spectacle but the actual human element is terribly done.

That son making it out without so much of a scratch really sours the whole thing for me. Also funny that the whole family of the ex-wife also seemingly living an idyllic life even among all the carnage. I know it's typical Spielberg to go all cliche like that but that's just too much.

This film always brings back memories of watching it in the cinema as I had to see it on three consecutive days due to people in the audience spoiling the experience.

I thought the look and sound design throughout the film was amazing. Incredibly powerful visuals and that horn. Ooft.

I thought it was interesting how we view the whole film through Ray's eyes. We see what he sees.

I can understand why the child characters acted as they did, and it was a natural portrayal, but they were super-annoying. Although I loved the look on the daughter's face when she sees Ray take down a tripod with the grenades.

I always skip the whole Tim Robbins segment. Not so much because of his character, but that too, but because of the repetition of the basement search scene. Once with the tentacle and the same with the actual alien. I didn't get why that sequence happened that way.
