I thought metroidvania had peaked with Ori and the blind forest, but i guessed wrongly. Jesus Christ, I cannot put it down. Somebody send help.

Stupidly addicting gameplay loop with a design that changes any time it has a chance of getting boring.

Finally started and I'm loving it. It's a really quick gameplay loop of "bag is full, run back, bag is full, run back, bag is full, run back." But at the same time, it feels really good to explore. Not sure how long that hook will last, but I'm enjoying it about two hours in.

it's the kind of game that when it ends you keep thinking "this should last at least 20 more hours"

It controls well. Good audiovisual feedback. Bag and time limitations keep you on your toes. Puzzle rooms are fun and break up the monotony of digging. Acquiring wealth and filling bars feels good.

And I don't even like the game all that much, but I can at least admit what all it does right.

I'd say that's because of how well paced the game is, if it was 5 hours longer we would probably be wishing for a shorter game.

I loved how the gave every new mechanic the right time to try and master its use before introducing a new one.

I'd say, next to Cuphead it's the most polished indie game I've played, it really controls amazing.

i would put:
1 - Cuphead
2 - Ori
3 - SWD2

Haha. You think that's the loop now... keep playing. It grows and opens up so much, it's incredible. Always new things, too.

Really great game and a fantastic series overall.

Can't wait for the next dig (if they make one, fingers crossed).

This is the only Metroidvania I've ever finished. I thought it was a nearly flawless game.

I found the first Dig on Switch to be very fun and addictive. Can't wait to play Dig 2 once Im done with a few other games.

I bought this yesterday after seeing another thread here praising it. It's fun as hell! Played probably 3-4 hours so far, just got out of the mines and into the plains area...

It's good! A bit short and the final challenges kind of underscored how the controls weren't suited for that level of precision, but I had fun with it. For this type of game though, Hollow Knight is the modern gold standard IMO.

I hope 2 is much better than 1. I bought both on the eShop and started with the first one. 2 hours in and the gameplay loop so far is making me sleepy. Not that I'm going to drop it or anything, but it's been disappointing so far.

Gameplay loop is super addictive, it's well paced, progression feels great and equipment upgrades have real weight to them and have considerable impact on gameplay and controls, music and visuals are both outstanding... I really think it's a perfect game in all of those aspects.

The game is free on Twitch Prime this month. Looking forward to trying it out even though I didn't particularly enjoy the first.

Because it has a well refined feedback loop with one of the best forms of an upgrade system ever.

Finished the first one, wasn't as great as I had hoped but liked it enough that I want to try the 2nd wan on VITA (hoping it's a PS+ game in the near future, gonna spend money on PS4 games :)).

For me the controls, the art direction and the progression are so well done, that I just never has a dull moment.

It's barely a metroidvania. There's almost no backtracking.
It's addictive because of the limited inventory and locked behind money abilities and upgrades. It has the same loop as many free-to-play games. That's why I wasn't a big fan of it, it's a bit cheap game-design wise, playing on the OCD compulsions of gamers.

I bought both during the easter sale on the Switch shop.

They are both massively addicting, the first also. The first one is also REALLY short, I think I completed it in 3 hours or something? The second one is far longer.

I was playing the first one together with my small son and he gave me an additional challenge. There's this bug type creature that my son pitied, and he disallowed me to kill them lol. Which was a fun challenge because I had to dig in certain ways to make sure I wouldn't damage them.

Amazing game but I will say it just still feels like an "indie" game. I have nothing bad to say about I just wanted more. More towns more dungeons. More more more. I'd gladly pay full price for a far more fleshed out game.

But as is: it's fantastic. It's pacing is incredible. Also check out Steamworld Heist. It's a lot different but I believe it's just as good if not better if you're a fan of turn based titles.

Also, as fun as Dig 2 is, Ori is still a by far better game imo. One of the best platforming games I ever touched.

This thread is making me charge my Switch after days of it being drained, just so I can purchase this game. Loved the first one but every time I read about it I think, "Damn, I need to get it!"

Dig 2 has the gameplay loop of a dungeon crawler like Diablo or Etrian Odyssey. You can only make a little bit of progress in each outing, but every time you venture out you gather rewards, and the price/benefits of items in the shop are well-tuned. So you keep making these bite-sized forays into the underground that always bring you closer to some new objective or purchase. It's expertly tuned from start to finish.

It has a great satisfying progression system that makes you want to keep leveling up and upgrading your abilities.

I drink know why but the game just didn't click with me. I kept pushing through but never really felt it grab me and get me in to the world or it's mechanics. I don't know why though.

I look forward to trying it. Currently playing Heist and having fun. Picked that over Dig since I like turn based stuff so much.

Yep, pretty good summary. It's a fantastic side-scroller, and Image and Form are extremely talented devs.

Diablo is a good comparison, but I've always thought the loop felt similar to the genre in which Image and Form started with - tower defense. I think of each "dive" as a TD round, or a mission in Heist as a TD round, followed by the upgrading break before doing another round. The money-making gets faster as you get more upgrades and vice versa.

Either way they've definitely got a consistent central DNA in their games while everything else evolves around it. 2 for instance gets a new identity with the Metroidvania-esque stuff and its larger open world.

It's that scary as hell chase sequence, where the giant robots are 'asleep' waiting to be triggered if you get too close. There's a fair few memorable moments in the game, but that sequence always stands out as quite distinct to me.
Ahh, this one...
I asked the question because I have just finished the game and I wanted to be sure that I didn't miss something. Really enjoyed the game, I found that it ended too soon.

I loved every minute. Is Heist worth a go?

Heist is the only Steamworld game I have played, and once I started it, I played it until I had beaten the whole game to completion. It was so addicting on the Vita. It is a great game, and why I am interested in Steamworld Dig 2. I have Steamworld Dig, but I haven't ever started it, but with Part 2 being on sale now, I think I am going to quickly grab it.
