I own Bayonetta 1 and 2 and have barely played either oops. But I loved playing her in Smash.

How do you girls feel about Bayonetta? A lot of people tout her as a positive example of a sexualized woman but I can't say I agree. I love that's she's super confident and extremely powerful but the "get naked while attacking" thing and the way the camera pans her body makes me hard to see her as a sexual power fantasy for women as opposed to a sexualized woman for the male player to gawk at.

How come we never get men who undress while attacking? Why is that a "woman" thing? I think we know why. Developers always find mundane reasons to sexualize women, it's almost comical. Besides that, I do think Bayonetta is a fierce and badass character, but I don't think they had women in mind when creating her.
I love Bayonetta, the games and the character. There are a bunch of gratuitous moments where the camera in cutscenes will focus on her breasts and genitals, but I think overall she owns herself. I've also noticed that a lot of men don't actually find her that attractive, so I guess they did something right with her design.

Probably a random question, but has anyone here put together like a family recipe book before? I've been wanting to collect a lot of our family recipes, particularly my grandmas, and since she passed this past year I thought it all the more important to collect those recipes so my whole family can have them. I'm not sure about the best way to get one made, though. A quick google brings up a few websites that specialize in printing recipe books, but idk how good they actually are. Figured I'd throw it out there to see if anyone else has done it before and had any suggestions.

Im pretty sure I saw a credits sequence where she rewards the player with a poledance. I never really saw her as owning her sexuality, especially considering the views of those who created her. But ya, all the more power to people who can enjoy the game.

I think she's a mixed bag honestly, she's a rare example of a woman who is extremely dominant and funny/eccentric yet a lot of her sexualization is really gratuitous

played bayonetta 1. didnt care much for her character, but it was her overemphasized proportions that really, really hurt my eyes (im an aspiring artist when i do have time to draw, and her anatomy was just .... it was just not right (for me)) (not the boobs either, it was the length of her legs)

(oh also her high heels were terrible) (why do women characters fight in high heels?) (even if they work in their fantasy lalaland cuz of ~magic~, game creators creating women characters wearing high heels are statements perpetuating that high heels are stereotypically expected to be worn by women)

also why are all "empowered" women characters are always the same type?

where are the "empowered" women characters that do not make their sexuality their ONE statement about empowerment?

I didnt, but a mother of our kids bought a book preprinted where you could write down your recipes. Looked very lovely, with little advices on every page.

Also I think that hand written gives it a special note when it comes to recipe collections.

I actually really like Bayonetta, and to a similar extent Zero from Drakengard 3 (as in, Zero took no shit from anyone and dominated the area around her). Although Drakengard 3 was a bizarre setting where the gender roles were reversed and men were the more objectified gender.

I also thought zero's portrayal was refreshing too. Though her sexuality was front and centre I didn't get the impression that its purpose was to titillate the player. That game wasn't afraid to be a little gross or intimidating about her appetites and I liked that a lot.

I agree about high heels, it something that always bothers me if I can't change my character's clothing and change to other footwear. It must be so uncomfortable.

And this is why I stopped playing Magic. Seriously.

Hey do you want me to teach you how to play?

Kid I've been playing since beta step off.

Nice you come here to support your boyfriend!

Bitch I got him into this game.

Ugh

I have only had one really bad experience since I started playing Magic, but I have never gone to my LGS alone. I specifically got my boyfriend into Magic so that I could drag him to the store with me.

I wouldn't necessarily describe Bayonetta as a sexual power fantasy, but I like her a lot. I think it's her weird, alien proportions that really make her work for me. She towers over normal humans in a way that is completely dominating. I'm not sure I'd describe her size as empowering, but as a small person who frequently feels intimidated because of their size, the idea of being a gigantic, stylish witch is an appealing fantasy.

yep. they are super uncomfortable > __ <

full disclosure: i wear high heels on occassions. but not all day long and not to run/dance/fight monsters in. they are agonizing to wear after a few hours. and they have long-term ramifications for your spine and hips at older age, if they are worn regularly and for long periods of time.

she didnt seem more gigantic than the other characters in the game though. i can't recall the man character being much shorter, tbh. like, she was taller, but i wouldn't call her 'gigantic'. everyone in that game had proportions that was exaggerated, wasnt it? it wasn't just her. everyone had super long legs/arms/torso. it was game aesthetics or sommit.

My sister-in-law did one for all the family Christmas cookies that get made every year since the handwritten ones were getting worn out. She took a picture of the recipe card, and took a picture of the finished cookies on a nice plate and used Snapfish or Shutterfly to make books for all her siblings. She even put together a shopping list at the back for making each cookie.

Most of the cast has the same weird Clamp proportions that she does, but she looks like a giant next to Enzo (who is more normally proportioned). Seeing her next to him at the start of the game definitely influenced the way I see her in general.

I often wonder what the reception would be if a huge game were to have an important non-playable male character who is presented as a melee combat guy, but for some reason the outline of his huge, semi-erect penis is clearly visible and jiggles around in his man-panties. And almost every cutscene shot starts with his crotch as the focal point, before panning over to the actual important things going on in the scene. And occasionally he goes into strange poses, seemingly with no purpose other than to further emphasize whatever's going on down there, all while this is just treated as nothing notable at all by the game itself, like it's totally normal.

I think there'd be an uproar and it would make men uncomfortable, but who knows. Maybe they would be totally cool with it because "the developer's vision" etc.
Never forget

Men posing like women are hilarious.

I only ever played the demos and hated the games, so I can't comment on the character much, but I've never liked her design much. I think she looks stupid. >_>

i guess we have different impressions :> (which is fine)

...................mmmmmmm maybe she'd be more convincingly 'gigantic' if she didn't have to wear heels since she should be 'gigantic' enough without them.

Are you talking about Prompto from FFXV?

I love that character, but I remember the change of his hair really irked the crap out of me. Of course, no male character when it comes to looks can compare to Ravus <3 . Oh and HAI everybody! :D Hope everyone is having a good start to their week (is it Friday yet?).

I recall that, when they showed off Zelda Breath of the Wild, I got so annoyed by the two girls who drooled the whole time over bare chested Link. I got it that they wanted to show off the temperature feature once, but the following feels-like-20-minutes giggling oh-naked-link scenes were so annoying.

Like, really? Is that necessary?

As a dude, I don't find her attractive, but I do think she's badass. Her proportions are kind of like, well, dudes like long legs right? BAM, look at those! But they're so exaggerated that it doesn't really work as a typical "sexy" model. That said, I think her attitude is great, her self-awareness and awareness of the player and the camera, and she has a dominatrix sort of thing, a big "you can look but can't touch" sort of vibe. Just my feeling about her.

Some of those guys have nicer legs then me! -grumble- -grumble- haha

Honestly, going through all that really helped me learn how to stand up for myself. I never got any help in the harassment department from my coworkers who just watched as it happened, so it forced me to take a stand and tell them to get lost. I was too nice, and too naive in a lot of ways. It was awful at the time, and super uncomfortable, and I still kind of feel grossed out, but now I know how to not let it happen anymore.

Sorry you had to go through that, that's something I could have probably used growing up as at 26 now I'm still no good at standing up for myself and let people easily walk over me and still plenty naive in many ways.

I like Bayonetta for the way she interacts with the other characters in the game. The camera can get annoying during cutscenes though.

On a completely unrelated note, it sure is "nice" to see the developers of Xenoblade 2 take objectification to a whole new level with the robot character. It's doubly gross since she looks like a little girl.

Persephone made a thread about sexualization in games, really well written, as per usual https://www.resetera.com/threads/why-women-criticise-sexualised-character-designs.4483/

I find a lot of the comments tiring and don't have the energy to debate this right now, but kudos to Pirate Bae, your posts were exactly what I wanted to say.

It's weird how straight men can't differentiate between objectification and sexualization and go to such absurd lengths to defend it, despite women constantly telling them that it's harmful and degrading. The number of posters who bring up "but women like to cosplay these sexy designs, you don't speak for all women"'in order to dismiss the OP....talk about missing the point. You can like a thing but also be critical of it.

I also find it annoying when they bring up examples of "sexualized" men? For me personally, I never viewed sexualized men and women equally because of the experiences of gender being different in regards to real world objectification and social context. Women are actually objectified in the real world to a wider degree where not a single woman I've met hasn't been harassed in some way by a dude. Men hardly, if ever experience this by a woman. Sexualizing women feeds into that societal problem, which largely doesn't exist for men to the same degree, so I never understood the comparisons. The guy who brought up romance novels seemed very tone deaf in that regard imo.

I often feel like both women and men are trying to speak for me so I just don't even bother posting in those threads. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I saw enough of those on the other site to know how they go.

I cosplayed Bayonetta.

You should give it a try, very fast pace and the action is smooth.

I love Bayonetta, probably my favorite game character.

Yeah it's in my backlog and I liked what I played of it. Just got distracted by other stuff, oops.

Also as a gay woman I don't find Bayonetta attractive either. As Pooh said, everything about her is so exaggerated that it doesn't appeal to me. But I don't need to find her attractive to find her really cool.

I haven't played any Final Fantasy game, but I've been interested in the series for a while. Someone in that thread posted some of the female protagonists from FF6 and they looked really cool, have any of you played FF6? Is it worth trying, it will be my first FF. How is the writing?

This design is just too cool

FF6 is awesome! I'd heavily reccomend it l, especially if you've enjoyed stuff along the lines of FE (nice icon!) The story takes a while to get going but both female protagonists are awesome. There's some really poignant moments and twists in the story, it really touched me. I think it has a great story for being a SNES game and not something modern :)
And yeah, Terra's design is just beautiful, I love it a lot.

Amanos' art for Terra is absolutely sublime! Thanks for the response, I'll give it a try!

i-it's ok

Lmao, is the violent twitching a positive thing or a negative thing? :p

Thanks! <3 FE is probably my fav series and the Tellius games (9/10) are my favourite games ever! That sounds amazing, I will def try it! It seems like it's available for SNES, GBA and PSone...which is the best version to try??
