Lauging at several posts stating "I just played for half an hour and WOW!" Because it is indeed wow, and 30 min is about all I can take too.

No dizziness or anything, just sweaty palms and raised heart rate.

Something that a lot of people that haven't tried VR before don't know, is that it truly can make you live extreme experiences that demand a lot more from you mentally than playing a game looking at a TV.

In a game like Wipeout it might not be that you're dizzy, but the fact that you feel that you go so fast with a lot of explosions happening around and that some part of your brain feels like your life is really in danger, that can make you feel overwhelmed. Personally I'm OK with having shorter experiences as long as they are as incredible as this.

Not much to add, other than to echo all the praise. This thing is phenomenal. Like, holy fuck it's good

Really impressed with the VR comfort settings, and can physically feel the difference between the three view modes.

The default, with the fixed cockpit and the ship rotating around you, gives me no nausea at all. Literally been playing this game for hours without any negative feelings.

Changing it to the ship view where the cockpit rotates as well, and I can feel the gradual, creeping sea sickness that Driveclub gave me. It's just a matter of time before this view makes me feel nauseous. The other noticeable thing about this view is how I automatically physically lean my body into each bend.

I could only manage half a lap with the pilot view before my stomach started getting knots in it, like I was on an actual rollercoaster.

What are the best VR tracks? I like a lot of the 2048 races, especially Altima with its big jumps (Sol would count too). Also the start of Empire Climb I think, where you have the giant angel statue in the background and the sun is behind it.
I noticed they still have reflections, that zero compromise port coming through? Unless it only shows up in photo mode or something.
Only real compromise I did notice was the track lines in Syncopia look quite bad until you get close to them. Not sure if its like that for other Zone tracks. Other than that, very good graphics for a VR game.

It's in a cockpit, with some comfort settings on it's fine. Resi has the disconnected movement issue that makes a lot of people sick.

I cant play re7 at all and yet i've been playing this without any confort setting on, so try it if you have that possibility. They are not comparable.

I hope you guys are right, i'll give it a try this weekend.

One aspect of having Wipeout in VR that I really appreciate is the sense of scale.

Wipeout tracks have always been lined with stands full of cheering spectators, and there's often buildings and other objects that tell you the craft and tracks are actually quite large in scale, but it's never really come across in gameplay for me.

But VR puts everything in a correct scale relative to the player/pilot. You're surrounded by your bulky craft. The extra depth perception gives you a proper sense of your crafts position relative to the track and scenery in the distance.

This is one of the things that, as a longtime wipEout fan, I was really looking forward to. I know what the scale is meant to be like (the ships, canonically, are fkn huge) so seeing that scale finally realised has me so excited!

I can't tear myself away from this update, I just can't believe they did this for free! Friends who have never had WipEout click with them have been blown away when I've showed them and are out buying copies themselves.

Can we PLEASE get some DLC Sony?! I want more retro tracks and ships and ANYTHING I can get my hands on!

Is there a reason why everyone's acting all mind-blown at this when Redout had VR since it launched in 2016

Redout has more tracks (literally nearly double, less ships however) and can be played fully in VR like this game.

Redout devs didn't ever come through with their promised PSVR patch as far as I remember?

Not knocking Redout but WipeOut is an established series with a long history. Anyone who got on board back on the Playstation has literally been dreaming of this day. For it to come along so fully realised, fully featured, so incredibly immersive, not dropping a frame and all for free is what's blowing everyone's minds.

Its worth buying a PSVR for. Simple as that.

I guess this is the best thread to ask... How is Wipeout 2048? Speaking strictly about the offline content

OK.

It doesn't hold up to the perfection of HD, or even Fury or the second or third PS1 games. It's got some nice courses, looks great throughout, it's sound design is incredible, but it feels unbalanced and cheap at times.

If anyone doesn't have PSVR yet and is interested in the new ship models, there's a trick/glitch you can use to access them for races:

Although the VR mode is incredible and I'd absolutely recommend going out and getting VR just for this. Killer app imo.

Okay, that headline might be a little unreasonable. But it's pretty much what I did yesterday after first seeing that the update bringing VR support Wipeout Omega Collection had gone live, then hearing the near-simultaneous news of a PlayStation VR price cut. I'd been holding out, but after selling my HTC Vive last week as part of moving house, this felt like a sign.

A sign pointing in the right direction, as it turns out, because Wipeout in VR is phenomenal.

Okay i'm getting a PSVR now just for wipeout. Is this the best VR game out there?

Skyrim is the best VR game out there, followed by Lone Echo on the Oculus, then Resident Evil 7 on PSVR. This may be the fourth best... it's really good.

I think the more realistic, urban track designs in 2048 make it harder to read the tracks. But some of them are my favourite Zone tracks.

I put my PSVR away just before I had my son in Feb and coming back by yesterday to this I was seriously impressed. I'm enjoying this more than most of my VR collection! To those who can't handle horror games this is the best game for PSVR now.

The feeling of speed is great and the sound is probably the game changer...hearing the other racers' engines buzzing around you helps immersion so much.

I switched all VR comfort settings off and I was fine, surprisingly, the mode has been done really well to avoid sickness, although like SJPN I couldn't handle too long with pilot camera lock...

Looking forward to jumping back in tonight!

Yeah, I'd agree with that. It was far more of an issue on Vita, but visibility still causes issues in this version. My biggest bugbear is that CPU ships seems to have their own physics, with rubber banding and don't seem to be impacted by weapons anywhere nearly as much as you do. It's really noticeable in VR when you're behind a pack of CPU craft and watch their unnatural movement. This isn't an issue at all in HD/Fury.

It grew on me a lot. Used to play it on Vita but because of the 30fps with drops framerate, small screen and more 'chaotic' track design (especially some of the city tracks, the color scheme and extra detail compared to HD / Fury make things a bit harder than they should be), but I started to appreciate more when Omega Collection released. I might actually prefer the feel of 2048, it's a bit more meaty.

For people who have this, how is the motion sickness?
There are lot of comfort options that should prevent motion sickness to some degree. But I would say it's definitely not an entry level VR experience.

I turned off all the comfort options which was fine until I turned on this tilting by head cockpit option. I can usually handle almost every VR game, but that was even too much for me. I felt dizzy for like an hour.

It also depends on the racing track. There are some really intense ones and the game even warns you if you choose them.

Amazingly minimal. Probably the most surprising thing about this game. The care they've put into the comfort options is as impressive as anything else.

Compared to Radial-G, whose VR mode made no concessions to motion sickness and just uses the regular internal view, Wipeout has put a bunch of options in there to counteract VR motion sickness.

Default view sees the cockpit fixed to the horizon with the ship rotating around it as though the cockpit is a gyroscope. It works wonders and has prevented me from getting any motion sickness. My stomach has clenched a few times when certain tracks rapidly wobble up and down, but no Ill effects.

Turning off all the comfort options and the game is as stomach churning as you can imagine. If you've got the VR legs for it, it's fantastic, but the default view is hardly lacking.

Plenty of comfort options, low speeds with the peripheral mask and gyro cockpit should be fine for people who are ok with moderate intensity VR games.

I got a bit irritated at having to keep switching the comfort settings off, though. It seems the first time you play each track with a motion sickness warning you have to go into options to switch pilot assist and the peripheral mask off.

I'm ok with intense VR; I was fine with smooth turning in RE7 and Farpoint and have been playing Wipeout with pilot lock and full FOV; but a couple of tracks have given me a moment's vertigo: the bumps at the end of the lap on Moa Therma at Phantom speed were tough.

Pleasantly surprised that motion sickness isn't an issue for me. Only played static stuff since I bought my headset (Batman, Superhot etc) but I jumped straight into this with no comfort settings and it didn't bother me at all. Amazing experience so far

I've bought this game from Tesco Direct for a whopping £14. Looking forward to seeing what all the fuss is about. Perhaps the most exciting thing I've read about is that the game is super sampled, even on the base PS4 which is what I've got. I've not used my PSVR very much at all for months now. I always get a headache after not much use (brought on by the pressure of the headset more than the VR experience). However now that time trials were unlocked in GT Sport I've used it again and really enjoyed that experience. The only real downside is the fuzzy visuals, even up close such as details on the dashboard. So yeah I'm glad Wipeout apparently is really clear, I can't wait to see it.

The headset really can provide some fairly crisp decent visuals in spite of the low resolution and it's basically the PS4 holding it back to some extent, but this appears to be pulling off miracles. Recent games go to show that VR really isn't doomed. It's still a while away from being affordable AND better to really be where we want it to be but we've gone beyond proof of concepts now. I desperately hope we get an improved PSVR2 on the PS5 and games like GT Sport released with full game compatibility. It's eminently feasible now and would improve the gameplay experience to a ridiculous degree. Can't wait!

I played for about 2 hours yesterday. I have barely played Wipeout before but this is great. I first started with the VR mode and it is nuts, I wish there was a HOTAS option for full immersion. I haven't gotten VR sick since 2016 so I turned off all the comfort options. Shit is tense, you can barely look at the hud around you without risking crashing. Tried it without VR and sucked, it was much so much harder, I was crashing into all kind of walls. Did one online race and barely won due to auto pilot at the end, shit was wild. Being able to look at your opponent for the last few seconds of the race was intense.

My only pet peeve is that your guy does't move his joystick when you control your ship, its not that noticeable as you are constantly looking at the track. But after EVE and RIGS it just adds that extra layer

yea, this is my racing game dream.

I've been playing WipEout since the original launched and it's been my favorite racing series ever since (GT3 notwithstanding). Playing it in VR perfection is more than I could have asked for. It's made the PSVR worth the price of admission all by itself.

If you need help with immersion due to the joystick not mirroring movement on-screen, consider joysticks in modern fighter jets have static ones, that don't move, and sense pressure from your hands. You can even get them for gaming, e. g. Force Sensing tech used in Saitek's X-65F. So, in the future, consider Wipeout ships have migrated over to these types of joysticks to enhance your immersion!

BTW, still playing this game with a constant grin on my face. :D

Yoooooo this is absolutely mind blowing. Though locking to pilot nearly made me barf. And usually VR doesn't bother me at all. Locked to cockpit with all the other comfort settings off is the way to go. Though there is something neat about the way they do the recessed cockpit view.

Thankfully I no longer motion sick in VR. Turned all of the comfort options off and shit is intense.

Elite passed 2048 on the first go, VR does indeed make racing easier as you more naturally lean into corners and can judge distance better.

Locked to cockpit in races, locked to pilot in the mayhem modes :D

After taking a pretty long break from VR on all platforms (about 3 months) just due to not having free time and nothing really jumping out at me, I was waiting for this patch for what seems like forever. It does not disappoint. As others have said they pulled off quite a feat here. I am super impressed with their default comfort options, as well.

This is coming from someone who spent almost a year working consulting with Oculus VR on a few projects.
So I have a deep understanding into the many issues around comfort, and accessibility the industry as a whole is facing and actively trying to solve.

As a huge wipeout fan, its amazing how natural the game feels in VR.
Almost as if it was meant to be in VR all along.

I agree. There is nothing about the VR mode that feels foreign or out of place with the Wipeout experience. It's everything you'd expect if someone told you they were developing a Wipeout game for VR and you knew nothing more about it. The fact that we can play online with VR users playing against 2D users is a testament to just how well it works. In fact, maybe a little too well as the VR users probably have an advantage over their 2D counterparts.

I'd love to see a similar treatment for other "older" games though off the top of my head I don't know of anything better suited for VR than Wipeout. Racing/cockpit oriented games are just a natural fit for VR. I'd like to think that the Motorstorm games would also work well in VR.
