You can host a private online scout mission and manually invite your friends over, at least in the PC version. Dnno how it works on the consoles.

Guys, I'm starving for a new Switch game and this seems right up my alley. Could I bother you with some questions about it?
  1. Is this a Musou game? It's by Koei-Tecmo and sure as hell looks a lot like it, but from what I could gather the gameplay is really different. I really really loved FE Warriors, so I'd dig if it was Musou. If not, which game does this come closer to?
  2. Do I need to have former knowledge of the show in order to enjoy it? I've always been interested in this IP but I suffer from permanent laziness and unless this comes up on Netflix, I shall not watch it (it hasn't beent offically realeased in my country, yet).
  3. Are there options for English V.O. or is it Japanese only?

1.) It looks/feels like a Musou and it's really obvious it's made by the same people. Some systems show up in their other games (mission structure is similar, the support level stuff shows up in AoT2, the materials dropping to improve weapons, etc) but the core gameplay feels quite different. Imagine if the Musou game was only the named enemies with a more interesting system in terms of actually engaging them as opposed to mashing out combos. The movement across the map is also very fun. So while it's not necessarily a Musou in the same way that FE:Warriors is, I think it feels enough like one that you would probably still like it.

2.) I have not seen the show and I am following the story. I am probably missing out on some context that the show/manga likely would provide, but I think I am generally understanding what is happening. I am somewhere in the second season arc in-game right now. I went in totally blind.

3.) I've seen nothing for English VO

Thanks for the help, mate! The bolded part interests me greatly! I gathered from watching a couple of videos that gameplay kinda, but not really, looks like a cross between a Spider-Man game and a Musou game, specially about the movement part.

you don't need to follow the show at all, it basically follows the story from your created characters perspective. So while your character doesn't exist in the show, the overall events and everything happen the same way.

Also, I don't think there is an option for English VA.....

That's great, then! I'm getting really interested in purchasing this...

About the English VA, I find it really hard to keep track of reading character chatter subtitles in action games.

To the best of my knowledge, all of the really important story stuff takes place in cutscenes. The dialog during gameplay is mostly chatty combat stuff that doesn't do much to push the story forward.

Did some multiplayer with some Japanese players (on switch).

Annihilation mode it pretty fun. They have multiplayer only items that affect the enemy team like putting ink on thier screens like it's Mario Kart.

It runs well too. Unfortunately sometimes people or the host drop out (maybe turning thier switch off or something).

When the 1st one came out, I remember the game getting lauded with praise for actually continuing with the swinging system in Spider-Man 2 where you cant just grapple on clouds in the sky and the movement is deep and fun

My PS4 copy finally showed up from GameFly - only took a week to ship ugh! Been playing for about 2 hours now & enjoying it so far. I never played the first one & I'm currently struggling a little bit getting the hang of combat & swinging around still. Kinda reminds of the free AOT browser game I used to suck at with my friends lol

They did a good job really capturing the feeling of taking down the Titans & slicing off their limbs bit by bit. Definitely enjoying my time with it so far.

I'm curious how different this is from the first, which I really enjoyed.

Is it largely the same mechanically or has the gameplay received significant overhaul?

Technically the game is still the same, the biggest difference between the first and the second is that your main character in the second game is an original character you create. He/she will have basic stats and have to unlock skills to get stronger. What does that mean? You will notice the progression alot better in the second game. Your character will start irritatingly weak and slow, but as you gain skills and buy better equipment you will start noticing how much better/faster you are swinging, and how much stronger you are.

You can still play with the show's characters, just not in the story mode.

This game is really freaking fun! Never played the first one, came in expecting another anime flavored musou in the vein of KT's previous tie-in games. Pleasantly surprised with how fresh this feels compared to your standard Omega Force game, the movement feels amazing and the way you kill stuff is really unique.

That said, I've only watched like, the first three episodes of the anime, and I feel like I had a much better appreciation of the plot nuances after having watched them. I'll binge season 1 before I jump back in.

The significant changes from the first game are:
  • the create a character
  • a new dodge/counter move you can use
  • all titans can now enter a rage mode state when they're focused on you long enough
  • they have better AI for grabbing you and pulling your strings off thier napes
  • You can do co op attacks with other party members now
  • the hub area where you do social links with party members
  • the base system has been expanded to include mining and stat increasing bases
  • Boss titans now have a stamina meter you must deplete before you can strike thier napes and go into rage mode quicker

Well since luck is not on my side and I didn't win AoT on the giveaway I just caved in and bought it. Excited to get home and try it.
One question though to those that have finished the game. I watched season one but not season 2 of the anime. If I just play the game will I get all that there is to know plot wise as if I had watched season 2 of the anime?

It's even OK to not have watched the anime at all, don't worry. One of the biggest revelation (about 2 characters) is brutal either in the anime and the game lol !
Reiner and Bertolt
About a third, it's more developped in the anime.
Ymir. We see about her (long) past in the anime and we can understand a bit more her final choice to go with the others.

The anime hints more about the titans, but major plots are in the game.
The main frustrations/questions are in both... D:

How's multiplayer co-op for this title? I have a friend who really wants to play but she's worried about bugs. Is the single player perfectly fine?

Sneak attacks are pretty fun as well!

Just blasted through Trost story missions and I'm really impressed with all the QoL changes and gameplay additions they've made from the first. Even if you've played loads through the first (I have like 40-50ish hours on it), this feels pretty fresh with your own character and how it's implemented into the main story.

I have the Switch version and I haven't seen any noticeable bugs. The game can feel a bit janky at times, but never buggy.
Thanks for letting me know! I really appreciate the answer! I just bought the game. I haven't played the first but my friend is a super huge fan of the series and I want to check it out with her.

It's weird because in relation to your first spoiler, my interpretation of it in the manga was "Just like that? It was done as a conversation in the background like a non-event", but I'm guessing they put more weight behind it.

I have more hours in this game already than I should really.

Some basic thoughts
The game is quite clever in how it handles the player character. You aren't exactly the best but you are recognised for your skill somewhat in a typical anime/protag fashion. Many of the higher rank will comment that you do well on missions and they look forward to seeing you rise, it works well because in game you are virtually the only one slaughtering Titans left and right. By themselves the AI really struggle, even champions such as Mikasa and Levi will just fly around their titans for days waiting for rescue.

The story has cutscenes that shows your character flying around in first person. It was pretty neat too. It is good because these scenes are not in the anime so even though you know the direction it is going you don't know the scene exactly where as the scenes without the protagonist in it tends to be shortened versions of clips in the anime.

The core gameplay loop during missions seems to be Optional Objectives (can give allies to your squad or items or building tokens) and Main Objectives. Objectives tend to be "kill surrounding titan", "escort civilians", "defend specific bases (kill all titans around them)" and "take out specific titans". Basically everything involves flying around killing titans but that is fine and it is pretty enjoyable most of the time.

Combat is really satisfying when it works and plays nicely but sometimes it can be a bit annoying as well. I'll touch on the latter with an example. Sometimes you will sever limbs to get items and a Titan will fall over, sometimes crushing buildings and getting stuck in geometry making it somewhat difficult to approach the nape afterwards. Worse is when it is a boss titan and they have limbs you need to hit in order to deplete their stamina but the model is spazzing out and rotating randomly because he is partially stuck in some geometry or fell into a ditch or river. Other times you want to target a titan, and as you swing around it to build up speed you will get flung off because other titans swarm in and your hook disconnects. This doesn't really do much other than force you to reposition and try again so it is a little bit annoying and having Titans surrounding you can make the camera go a little funky if you move too close to them in a similar way you move too close to buildings and walls in most 3rd person action games. This made me typically try to approach from above instead which is a lot more successful assuming my hook is strong enough to sling be up (need some distance to build speed) then back down rather than straight towards the target.

So, when the combat works it is really satisfying. In my cases I have been 1-3 shotting most non-boss Titans. Mostly one solid hit in the neck will eliminate them. The Titans aren't particularly fast either so it is pretty easy most of the time. The thrill then comes from doing this repeatedly and quickly and well. You get medals for your kills. A sloppy one might give a silver and a good might give a gold. So when you get used to the controls and have gear that is decent enough to allow you to sling from one part of town to the other, eliminate a few titans and then keep going it feels really good when you get into the flow of it. You start adding extra things like taking off select limbs for items, seeing a titan you think you haven't caught yet and using the net to bring it back for Hange etc.

Flying around town was interesting at first but grew on me more and more as I upgraded my gear, got better gas capacity and pressure allowing me to fly faster and further cross the maps all the while I grew more and more used to the game and controls. It is really unique and pretty well done. Flying through the canyon and slaying titans without stopping is really quite enjoyable and unlike any other game I've played.

I've mostly been playing story mode and so far I enjoy the roster of changing allies as some of them are moved around in the story you lose access to them but gain others. It is a bit of a shame you cannot adjust their skills. I really have no need of a healing ally so a character such as Christa is not useful to me in my squad 90% of the time other than the follow up attacks. Some missions are a bit overwhelming trying to defeat the Titans faster or defend multiple locations but in general it has been fine in single player.

Some tips
I was fighting the camera's lock on/targeting system at first and still do when trying to switch Titans. However I think switching body parts is set to left and right to switch between left and right limb and up and down will move to an upper or lower body part. At first I had thought it was based on what you saw on screen so i was constantly fighting to get the part I want when a titan was laying on the ground and I pressed up to try and target a leg that was furthest away from me, I should have been pressing down to move to a lower body part.

Areas you cannot anchor and fly around can be annoying. If you don't want to bother with the horse like me, timing your double jump can give you a speed boost as you bunny hop across the ground and it shouldn't expend gas if you do it properly.

There seems to be some useful skills unlocked through befriending allies I haven't unlocked anywhere near all of them but here are some I found useful.
Jean's Swooping Attack - Increases damage when dropping down on a target from above.
Mikasa's double boost - Allows two air boosts. This burns gas but it really helps getting you to the other side of the map faster sometimes.
Levi's midair blade swap - You can change blades mid-air but the best part is that you throw your dulled blades at whatever you are targeting so it counts as a ranged attack.

Don't sleep on the command signal flare you have. I find it helps bringing down boss titans quite a bit. Allies seem better at follow ups and it can be the difference between severing one leg after depleting stamina or severing everything.

If you try to sneak attack into a group but get targeted you don't have to hook and fly in there slowly if you have an ally that has a cutscene attack support such as Levi or Nanabe. Doing the attack will leave you right in the fray.

Well, I'm calling it quits. AOT2 is a genuinely terrible game. One of the worst I've ever seen. It is a towering monument to a frankly heroic level of incompetence.

Everything you or anyone else does causes something unexpected and awful to happen at an alarming frequency. I'm supposed to be killing Titans, but that's impossible. Their weak points are inside houses, outposts, the Walls, trees, cliffsides, the ground, or each other. When they fall over, they either fall somewhere inconvenient or their fall animation glitches out and never ends. If I get knocked out of an animation, the same thing happens to me. Fighting a Titan on a street, fighting a Titan in a forest, and fighting multiple Titans all huddled together are both recurring motif and exercises in futility. The only feedback for cables attached to Titans is a one pixel width line. My useless teammates are either on cooldowns or too weak to deplete half the health bar of a regular Titan's foot. If I sever the limb of a Titan, the camera has a panic attack and I have to wait until it calms down. The mini-map is a confusing mess of useless information. Cutscenes can and will knock me out of attack animations. The control scheme is a complete shambles of confusing and conflicting information. All actions are context sensitive, while paradoxically the game also dedicates two separate buttons to performing the same action on different targets. You let go of the left analog stick to charge forward.

I could go on, but even listing all this garbage is making me feel a thousand years older.

Licensed anime games are notoriously of poor quality, but this is an entirely new low. This game had name recognition, a publisher and a marketing budget, and playing it reminds me of Bad Rats. Jesus Christ, what an awful experience.

To each his own but I can think of plenty of games that are wayyyy worse than what AoT2 offers. I really enjoy the game but it's by no means perfect

I think the controls are actually pretty intuitive. I have had some camera issues but it's more often than not serviceable. There are times when titans fall in an awkward spot and it does suck, however that was fairly infrequent for me.

Also, your teammates are probably weak because you have weak teammates. The difference between someone like Mikasa (S Rank) and Conny (B rank) is massive. A B rank and D rank will see huge changes in terms of damage as well.

I like the game and many mechanics, but I agree with Tunahead on many points. I'm sick of unskippable cinematics (those for tiny events, not the big ones) that cut your attacks and rythm. Many QoL issues that can be fixed.

I'll add I'm on Switch and the D-pad of the pro-controller drives me crazy (wrong ally action, wrong consummable...). I really can't stand JoyCons.

I'm tired of some musics too, sadly. I think about one with too many loud voices + weird effects. The one on last story mission iirc.

But I'm about to have a break with the game for another reason : balance and stuff in Inferno mode. I'm already tired to farm and spend more time to capture than to fight.

I saw the credits and I'm pretty much done with the game. Interesting features, quite fun but without any sort of mixed moveset or goodies to grind I'm not interested in filling out my Titan Pokedex or tryng to upgrade all my gears or even max all friendships.

They really should patch out an option to skip the cinematic slow-mo stuff during combat it gets old pretty quick especially when some stages are throwing 50 Titans at you. That isn't even considering when you need to do multiple hits or taking limbs. I would also like body part switching to need an extra button such as RB since I often try to rotate the camera to keep up with fast titans and it switches body parts on me at the same time.

To those who are suffering from controls, I think it takes a little bit to get used to but it actually works quite well. The problem is the beginning and early on you don't really get a good feel of it because your gear is kind of shit. Using the air boost will chunk your gas meaning you will run out at inconvenient times. Missing and bad angles will deplete gas and blade sharpness really quick and be very frustrating. Early on really pushes you to work on maneuvering around the Titan to get a good (angle and speed) attack in. Circling the Titan will also be harder earlier on because your Agility is low and your anchor strength (gear) is weak.

When a Titan glitches out an ally that has a cutscene attack such as Jean, Hannes, Levi, Hanaba will help you right them or get rid of them entirely. You can also just lop off legs and shoot the capture net. If you can get in front of the Titan you can also sometimes set them right with a flare.

Allies are a bit hit/miss. Good allies are really good but early one they will feel like last resorts since the cool down is so long. There are skills that can lower it, increasing friendship lowers it too I believe. Increasing Leadership stat lowers it and later in the game you unlock the SOS flare which will reset the cool down on all 4 at once when you use the item which can make boss monsters easy peasy.

I asked if i can skip AoT and go for AoT2 and they said that "True Attack Mode" from 1st game is better than Inferno on AoT2. Any commentary?

I haven't played the first game so no idea what True Attack Mode is but Inferno Mode is mostly for late game min-max grinding for gear. I only did a mission or two here but it was... Interesting. For now I will say that if you want to play through the story and enjoy it then there doesn't seem to be a need to go into AoT since this game covers both seasons of the manga. The first game doesn't really offer anything different in that regard.

Inferno Mode is interesting because if it wasn't for the absurd tankiness of the Titans I would probably enjoy this mode quite a bit. The Titans are aggressive and actually a bit of a threat. The AI seems better overall. They actually go for grabs frequently. I don't mind going for multiple passes of attacks to kill Titans but when every Titan needed this and they started swarming around me in greater numbers I was actually struggling. This made me pay more attention to my setups and town placements. I used tools regularly, particularly the SOS Flare so I that I can utilize Mikasa and Levi more often. Ultimately I was a bit slack in weapon upgrades and I didn't really feel the desire to grind so i can perform better in this mode so that I can grind for even better gear...

There are some cool looking weapons but I wish you could have a different set as you renew blades because some of them just aren't great for bosses. How are those ones? Are the explosions functional as well or just aesthetics? The durability is so low I passed them after a glance.

This one has a weak raw ATK, but th burning effect is nice (but I think it's a bit useless in Inferno mode though), plus the look is...

I almost have enough for the next upgrade, but I think I'll try another one, more effective for Inferno mode because the black upgrade +99 = 760 atk power only.

At this point I don't think I can be bothered with final upgrade +99. That is way too much and the process of reaching 99 seems like at least 30 minutes of menu crafting which is nonsense in this day and age.

I've read some strategies for Inferno where you take Ground Capture skill and use that along with allies who can help you capture titans. This is interesting if only because it is so different to how I normally play. My last attempt was basically taking some decent attack power and high durability then spamming the chain attack until I hack off a body part. Constantly resupplying but it gets the job done if a bit slow. The bizarre titans, particularly the female variant kicks my ass though. She is so aggressive and agile it can be difficult to deplete the stamina not to mention my low dps when I do get to do some damage.

That's exactly what I hate with the inferno mode. Capture, capture, capture, capture. Not interesting at all (not to mention the SP required for titan slayer skill). The AI is better with more grabs and push back, but way too much HP. For bizarre titans, offensive towers are really effective against stamina (allies + SOS flares too). About those weapons, I upgraded it because I like the burning effect (all limbs at once).
I think there is a bug too with capture, but it might be an exploit bug.

I haven't gotten to "Inferno Mode" yet as I've been only inching my way though and helping some people out on SOS missions and stuff. Why do you need to capture titans in this mode? Is it like a side objective or is it something you HAVE to do?

Oh, no it's not a goal, you use too much blades/gaz/supply towers to kill them with average stuff (even max stuff at the end of normal mode is weak in Inferno). So with capture it's safe and faster.

About upgrading stuff, use the online coop (not the merchant), it's WAY cheaper (and idk if it's a bug but it costs 0 money, only mats). When you join someone, each get a weapon. If you request it, the waiting can be very long and once again, the costs are weird. I didn't have to collect all the required components to post the request, and it worked (thx to Japanese folks ^^)... I tested it again in local mode, only the person who answers your request has to gather the components (the money cost is still 0, lol). I think it's completely bugged atm (enjoy before a patch).
