I'm going to regret weighing in on this but:

That's really not a good analogy. You used "I" twice, right in "this month I ate the most hotdogs I've ever eaten". It's unambiguous. Obviously "first-party" could refer to Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo.

EDIT: I never, for a moment, thought that Sea of Thieves was the fasting-selling, first-party, new IP from this generation. There are other obvious candidates, like Horizon Zero Dawn.
You say "obviously" first party could refer to Sony or Nintendo, but that is 100% wrong. It is obviously only referring to MS because Sony and Nintendo are not first party when Microsoft speak about first party.

This is literally one of the dumbest things I have ever seen argued on the internet. It is not ambiguous at all. People are trying to find things to bash Microsoft for, end of story.

I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but to me, the best part of this news is that I hope it translates into Microsoft being far more willing to take a chance on creating new ips.

That's good but I wonder if they will play past the free month of Game Pass?

This GAAS was primed to push that program and I wonder if there's enough there to sustain that push.

Oh boy if Sea of theives don't chart high on npd. Hilarity is sure to follow
It probably won't since it's an always online, online only game that has been pushing game pass, so buying digital makes sense. We're already seeing 50%+ digital adoption for regular games, I'd wager this game will have a much higher percentage.

That accomplishment is not really impressive when you consider the few exclusives that Xbox get, plus getting inflated player numbers from a service. I'm happy for Rare though.

I don't see what is so vague here.
There are 2 millions unique players being game pass or sold copies.
This is also their fastest selling new IP.
These are just two different informations to proceed...
Sorry, I was referring to the debate about how many units have been sold. Most companies post a figure like all the MHW updates we keep getting. MS has left this info out and it's inspiring a lot of debate and math equations

NPD tracks digital sales, however SoT isn't charting number 1 with the release of Far Cry 5 and MLB The Show 18 releasing this month.

After reading all that again, I'm almost positive they wanted it to sound like it was across all platforms. It was spin in its purist form.

We watched ready player one tonight, and It made me feel kinda bad for ms. They used 'gold and silver' membership options as a way to show how obtuse the corporate shill bad guy was. Along with how much advertising space they could put in the ui of a game hud before someone has a seizure.

Great movie though.

The game is continuing to sink on Twitch. These last couple days have been rough. It has been between 15th and 18th place all day and around 15,000 to 20,000 viewers. Up until two days ago, it never fell outside the top 10 and was always 35,000 to 45,000 viewers.

That's honestly pretty good for a new release pushing 2 weeks old.

I wonder how Destiny 2 compared to the Division

This is going to be a thing going forward, how on earth do you actually figure out if a game makes money with gamepass involved?

They didn't. There is no spin, only people looking for things to be offended about. First party has always meant the platform owner. A rival platform owner has never been referred to as first party. This 100% manufactured outrage.

Now we're using twitch viewership to try and discredit the game? Lol

Because one of the two bought the game, and the other got the 14 day free trial to try the game.
Or the other person paid money and subscribed to game pass. Even if they got the free trial, if they like the game they'll either buy it or continue subscribing.

This will not happend untill MS has some good numbers to show, till then we will only get these vauge pr spins.

Please be excited ;-)
MS don't do sales numbers anymore, period. They didn't do sales numbers when halo 5 sold gangbusters. They didn't do sales numbers when Forza sold gangbusters. They haven't done sales numbers when Sea of thieves did great numbers. MAU, as much as people around here try to laugh about them, are the most important metric for services. It's what almost every service company reports. Sony have now even publicly acknowledged that MAU are more relevant and have started reporting MAU.

You're not getting sales numbers because sales numbers aren't the focus. Microsoft would rather get $10 a month off you forever from a subscription than $60 once, maybe twice a year. Why do you think office moved to a subscription?

This is going to be a thing going forward, how on earth do you actually figure out if a game makes money with gamepass involved?
How on earth do you think you know that anyway? And why do you think that's something that they need to tell you?

Yep and that's why I no longer use Office and won't be paying money for game pass.

Bad for consumers. The gamers might think "oh no it's a steal!" but if you've followed what MS has done in the PC software market recently you'll realize it's not a good thing.

Shhh it doesn't matter obviously. /s

For Microsoft as a platform holder it really becomes of secondary importance. They'll have all the stats and numbers, and they'll look at them, but in the end the most important thing becomes whether their game portfolio keeps driving engagement with the platform. For third party publishers actual sales will be of much greater importance, of course.

I mean as gamer do we really need to know actual sale numbers? At the end if the community is healthy, they keep announcing how many players it hit and keep supporting the game. Then we know the game is doing good and most of all healthy.
Even more MS doesnt "care" about the sales either. Otherwise they dont give free copies away with Play Anywhere and put their games day one on Gamepass for $10.

Sony and Nintendo which both are platform holders give sales numbers of games and consoles every year, MS is the only one which is being very secretive regarding them.

Also, they actually announced FH3 numbers, every other title that they haven't announced underperformed or bombed completely, I'm sure people can see why they don't announce them.

Theorry you're on a dedicated gaming forum, there are people who are interested to know how games are selling for sure.

I'm a consumer and I'm fine with the subscription, I think it's great. I can either pay like $250 every time they release a new version of office just for office, just for myself or I can pay $10 a month and get office on 5 computers that I am allowed to share with friends and family, along with 1TB of OneDrive storage each. I split that $10 a month with 2 other people as well, they each give me $25 a year for it. It works for me, and I much prefer it to buying a new version every other year.

Microsoft is being secretive for a reason. Microsoft was the first to show numbers during the 360 generation and early on in the Xbox One.

This is new and unique for the Xbox audience, and at least shows some risks. How successful it was shouldn't matter, I am just glad that something outside of Microsoft's comfort zone was successful. Hopefully Microsoft takes more risks again.

That doesn't sound like a very good drop, how do we know it's pretty good compared to other high profile releases? Is there a chart or database available?

I mean, gamers don't need to know anything, sales numbers are just commonly released info from almost all publishers and console makers, people are used to it.

May 2017 they said 2.5m.
Yep, They also said Ori made profit in only a matter of a week and we got Cuphead numbers as well (not a MS IP I know but still), there is a pattern for sure, I'm not saying it's bad that they are doing this (Sony does it too for some titles that don't do good), being more open would be good though.

The Ori dev said that tho on the other forum. Not MS i believe.
