I'm not sure, but a quick Google shows that Viva Pinata may have been running on a custom in-house RARE engine, though Party Animals used Krome Studios own engine instead. If true, that means they replicated a similar art direction from their past games/engine on to Unreal 4. Pretty interesting nonetheless. I wonder what the main reasons were for them switching over to Unreal 4 instead of continuing to expand on and develop their in-house engine.
Rare dropped their in-house engine (Rocket engine) after kinect sports rivals, basically said it was due to the versatility of UE4. Also that they could start working on the game quicker, I assume building out rocket engine for SOT's would take a lot of work.

EDIT: But I think Rare Replay might use Rocket engine.

Wonder why people's reading comprehension dips in quality whenever xbox has positive news or deals with Greenberg tweets.

I don't know about this, putting someone in a world and telling them to do what they want without providing them ways to entertain them other than having fun with friends (varied and certainly more than in this game) doesn't sound good, how many games have actually pulled this off successfully? (Minecraft I guess is the only one?), there is also a problem with the world being bland, as in it is not worth exploring because there is nothing special to discover, maybe this will be solved in the future.

Personally I always need a carrot to follow in multiplayer games as a gamer, games like Destiny, The Division and MMOs do this greatly with constinatly getting your character better be it through gear or getting newer skills, a cosmetic only progression will be dropped by me fast, it remains to be seen how long will players be engaged with the game and if they made the right choice.
I'm not saying that what they have done is better than other templates (though I'm really enjoying the game), but it is a unique take. I don't think I ever played anything like Sea of Thieves, in like ever.

These threads are good for getting a decent ignore list complied. Nothing else really.

Every. Single. Microsoft. Thread. It's crazy for a community who claims to be open minded.
I think it's because MS has a history of making PR statements that are intentionally vague or misleading. Sometimes borderline lying.

In this case though it's pretty clear. 2 million players. The whole gane share or gamepass stuff is unlikely to make much of a difference.

This is only true because conservatives are afraid to post what they think here. The video-game discussion here is much, much better in my opinion.

I have seen plenty of conservatives. I just think american cosnervaratives (republicans) have problems cause they are so far right they can't really be considered normal conservatives anymore. Romney and Bush are conservatives, both seems to highly dislike the current GOP because they are so far off what conervativism (right word) actually is.

I really dont understand why this is great news. Doesn't it still only equate to a lot of people trying the game out ? Most for free or only $10. Will sales #s ever be released? Isn't a game like this also dependent on player retention ? How many of those to 2million will still be playing in a month? No one really knows, could be a lot or it could be a few.

I disagree, but I don't want to go any further into this. So I will say no more.

I wonder how many copies of QB would have sold at retail if it launched on gamepass?

In a silo the fact that this sold better than QB is not really very great

But the fact that this sold better than QB not including all the people that are subscribed to the service is actually quite positive.

Somebody should dig up a "what games are going to bust in 2018?" thread to see how often this game comes out.

The fact it's doing as well as it is is really a testament to what Rare has created here.

I always felt, the way the heads at Rare were talking in the post release vids, they were concerned about many things, but not about the game popularity, just felt they knew it was going to be a juggernaut. Its just a matter of 'when'.

You realize that just means the base game is so unsatisfying to many that they'd prefer the illusion of progress to nothing at all.
"To many" is generalising the opinion of those shouting the loudest. It's clear the game is doing well and understandably so with content that is enjoyable and fun. The fact few have to continually rail against the game is just a sad state of armchair game developers.

Actually it seems that it went over their expectations.

Not paid attention to this at all, but I'm guessing its the next Ghost Recon Wildlands for this site. (Maybe in time, even the next battle royale, lol!)

If anything, brick and mortar sales numbers are less important for this game than others. This was the flagship title to get people into Game Pass, and it has done a great job of that. People have to accept that number of copies sold is no longer the definitive measure of a games success.

Well the MAU for MS will be higher for March. Good for them. I do expect a drop next month but I expect it to go back up for SoD2. I do expect a content road map update on Friday though.

I think people forget that GamePass also allows a game like Sea of Thieves to be released as it is and people can come back at it when it is to their liking. And if the hook is better, they can either keep subscribing or buy it...or...not. But that's an extra $10 for MS that month. The thing about GamePass is that the more MS 1st party games are on it and updates to those games happen...the more likely someone will stay subscribed. I can see a huge amount of subs happen when Forzas Horizon 4 is released on it. And updates to games like SoT, SoD2, and Crackdown 3 will make it more compelling. The thing about GamePass is that it can only get better and the value goes up...and that's only from a 1st party perspective.

Don't get it twisted, retention does matter...but that barrier for reentry is low. If I trade a game in because it sucks, I'm more than likely not going to buy it again just because of some updates...that full or used price is going to be high. But if I come to use GamePass later after a game updates andore games are added...not only can I try out the game that ducked, but new games as well.

Making barriers low is key. Either way, I truly believe that 2 million people trying this game is a success for MS. Now the hard part for Rate is keeping and growing their user base, and getting people to come back.

Surely a joke tweet, I will buy a physical copy of SoT and YouTube myself eating the disc if that happens.

Pleased for MS though, interested to see how many of those players were via gamepass.

He wrote that tweet in january talking about the quality of the game and when it actually came out and it got crushed he walked that back a bit. Even he thought the game was a letdown.

Nothing in that press statement says anything about sales numbers whatsoever, but I guess the game isn't a flop.

Still waiting for NPD for more concrete info. If a huge number of players generally enjoy Sea of Thieves and stick with it, then that's great.

Why would he joke about it? Or is it more, that you want it to be a joke tweet?

SoT might not do PUBG numbers, but it damn well is going to be in the headlines for a very long time. We would not have a 120 page review thread, if the game was not crazy popular.

The 120 page review thread is because it's extremely divisive, is a 1st party title and it got relatively low scores, not necessarily because it's crazy popular.

The fastest selling new IP statement does not include Game Pass numbers.

So yeah, it's actually great. It means it's doing better than ReCore, Quantum Break, Sunset, Ori, Ryse, etc.

Though I agree with the player retention comment. For what we know, they got around 3 times more players than what they were expecting, but it will be interesting to see how populated the game is after a couple of weeks, and how Rare plans to keep players engaged.

1. Great numbers, impressive to see 2m unique users 1 week in.
2. When you keep your userbase dry as fuck for almost the entirety of the console lifecycle, these kinda things tend to happen.
3. Hopefully Rare can get this thing off the harbor because there's so much negative press about launch issues, bad gameplay loops, and the claims that it's an early access game packaged as a full release.

2M players is good BUT how many of those 2M players are via Game Pass versus buying the actual game? That's what I want to know. When Microsoft reveals actual numbers that are actually impressive, then I'll be impressed. Until then, not so much. If anything, im fully expecting all of Microsoft's first party exclusives to do crazy numbers regardless of how good or bad the game is because for $10 a month, any game is worth a rental.

Who cares? More people playing the game the better. Do you care that Fortnight is free?

MS doesn't care whether people bought it or are playing it on game pass so why do you?

Congrats to RARE, now hopefully they can continue to grow their product post launch. They definitely have a vocal player base already who is telling them what they want to see.
