Just had a few games of Wipeout VR.
Wow, you can see that someone's put a lot of love into this - this is no half-hearted add on. I've been playing Wipeout since day 1: Wipeout, 2097, Wip3out, 3SE, Fusion, Pure, Pulse, HD, Fury, Omega (missed 2048 until Omega) and this is a dream come true.

Well done Sony and co, good job!

Anyone else unable to launch Wipeout VR? If I start it up while wearing the headset, it's just permanently stuck on the black screen that says "Wipeout Omega Edition" in white letters. If I start it up with the headset turned off, it works fine until I turn on the headset, at which point all I see is a black screen (both on the headset and on the TV), although I continue to hear the music. Very frustrating.

You should turn off super sampling or whatever it's called somewhere in the PSN system menu.

Played WipEout VR for over an hour and OMG is it good! It's everything I hoped for, well done Sony and co. this is gaming bliss!
Managed to get a couple of elite gold medals in WipEout HD on the first run, I still got it ;)

Oh and that 3D sound is awesome, feels like being in a pod race, really ties the gaming experience together.

is it possible to download the the wipeout update from the PSN store, or can you only DL it by manually launching the game?

Thanks for this tip. You totally saved me, I was trying to figure out why it wouldn't load, even after deleting and redownloading.

This is the future though. It's crazy how Wipeout feels playing it in VR, especially you take all the VR training wheels off. The rush is incredible.

sorry, meant from the web store. I am at work.

If your PS4 has been activated as your primary console, then yeah, you can just go to the webstore, select it and download it, and it will automatically go to that PS4. I've done this myself, but that's for entire games. If it's an update, provided that Wipeout is on your active menu bar, it will have automatically checked for the update and downloaded it.

'Active menu bar' means the main bar, and it not being in the library sub folder?

If thats the case, then Im pretty sure my WipeOut is not in the active menu bar currently.

I always wondered why some games automatically download updates and others didn't.

So I am guessing there isnt any way to start that download remotely then?

I don't think so, unless you can remote into your PS4 with a vita.

yeah was thinking the same thing, sold my vita, after I got remote play working on my note5, but then they patched that out. And I dont have a supported Windows machine for desktop remote play. So I guess I out of luck.
No biggie. Thanks

Can someone please explain the different VR options in Wipeout? Changing any of the settings doesn't seem to have any effect on the game. Also is there a way to get rid of the "blinders" around the cockpit (When I hit options they disappear for a second or so)?

That's under field of view, or FOV. Remove it entirely and you'll have a clear side to side view.

Settings are poorly named. I don't know what Field of View actually does, but it isn't blinders. The blinders are under Headset Settings – VR, and you can choose large, small or off.

The other VR setting affects the camera. If you set it to "pilot" you have the full-fat tilt-o-vision.

No idea how any of these settings affect third person mode because that mode is crap.

I'm having some tv issues since hooking up my psvr to my tv. Almost every time I start my ps4 pro, the tv's resolution gets reverted to 16:9 instead of "just scan". Anyone else familiar with this? It started when I hooked up the passthrough box. I need just scan or I get annoying overscan so a portion of the screen is outside the tv's borders. Not a problem when playing vr but it doesn't return to just scan when I turn it off either.

Hhhnngg, can't stop thinking about the rush I had playing those couple hours of WipEout VR last. Want to get back into it and maybe even play online.

Someone should do an OT for WipEout VR, it deserves it. I would but I've never done one and wouldn't do it justice.

Wipeout VR - Holy shit. Amazing.

Started out on slow w/ all the VR assists enabled and its actually really well done. Pretty tame, although if racing games get to you, this will still get you after a race or two. Really smart how they re-modeled the vehicles to give an explanation for why the cockpit can stay parallel with the road, which also cuts down on where most of the motion sickness comes from.

2nd race I removed the cockpit blinders, and bumped the speed 1 level and it was perfect. Fast enough to be fun, but not so crazy to penalize me for not knowing the track that well. 3rd race I bumped the speed again and it was just too fast for not knowing the track, but at least it didn't make me dizzy, so I'll definitely be bumping the speed back up once I learn the tracks.

It feels awesome to have to crane your head all around to look over / under hills and around corners. That and the 3D make the cockpit view awesome. This is easily just as, if not more, impressive then the Star Wars VR demo IMO.

Just looked up End Space :-P Hadn't come across it before.
PSVR without Parole seemed to like it, but had a few issues with it, primarily lack of content for price - so you'd want to pick it up on sale if at all.
Also, at least one of the issues they raised was fixed in a patch(particles).

it was "allright" very short though, like 2 hours max for 100% completion.

thanks for the info.

Oh, and if anyone's new to WipEout or unaware, you can hold R2 in the ship select screen to view the model! Just thought I'd mention because it's great seeing the ships up close.

Wow! Just had my first session in WipEout VR.
They've done such a fantastic job with this game. I was laughing from excitement in the new menus with the ships flying overhead.
I couldn't help myself, I went straight to Zone Mode on Sol, with all assists turned off.
It's incredible how much it doesn't make you sick while playing.

Got up to Zone 102, which I think was a personal best on that track :)

Oh, man, I just finished a too-long session of Wipeout VR, and my hand is an aching claw from the controls. I wound up leaving my thumb on X, my index finger on Square, and my middle finger on R2. I'm really going to have to think about remapping the controls.

Still, though - what an experience. I haven't been sucked into that "let's just see what the next course is like" compulsion since the first four Burnouts.

Seriously, give the motion controls a go. It works quite well and is really fun.

I set the motion sensitivity to 30% so it's not too crazy. Also, you can still use sticks if you need to.

I second that, Statik over Megaton. But for that price, it's also nice, and it's getting a Move patch this summer.

Statik for €6.99, Megaton Rainfall for €8.99 - yay or nay? And if I could only get one?
Statik for sure. Great game and very immersive.

I found Megaton Rainfall a major letdown. It's not full stereoscopic VR (even your hands are 2d, which looks really dumb and breaks immersion),scale is way off, janky controls. I was hoping it would feel akin to Eagle Flight for flying...but it's not even close (Eagle Flight does a much better of job of making you feeling like Superman..despite the beak and lack of powers).

Statik it is - thanks! Disappointing about the lack of stereo 3D on MR. Glad I found that out - I would have been really let down to discover that after buying.

Oh, man. I was in the menus and all of sudden startled by the sound of ships somewhere to the left of me. I turn to look, and there are ships zooming about in a sort of stylized rendering over there. So many amazing little VR touches, which was totally unexpected, and they contribute to making this update a really complete package.

I couldn't help myself, I went straight to Zone Mode on Sol, with all assists turned off.

Oh wow. I totally forgot abt. zone mode.

There is some stereo 3D...but it's mainly little special effects (explosions, particles etc) and when you get really close to objects. It certainly doesn't feel anything close to true to life scale. It's a weird mix of wrap-around 2D with occasional 3D augmentation. It might be that they just dialed back the stereoscopic aspects in certain areas due to motion sickness concerns..but the fact they didn't even try to replicate 3D hands (which is a standard for VR) was a really bizarre choice. I think I was so hyped by the concept that I couldn't help but be let down. Still, there are others who love it.

I might have been more impressed with it if I hadn't already played Eagle Flight (not a perfect game by any means... but they nailed immersive, vomit free flying around a city. Megaton felt like such a step back for control).

Steering isn't the problem, it's the fact that you have to let off the acceleration (X) while firing weapons (Square) or picking up energy (Circle). I think remapping acceleration to one of the triggers, and moving the air brakes up to L1 and R1, would be an improvement, allowing you to keep your foot on the gas without taking away the ability to do something else at the same time.

This is how I have wipeout games set:

X = Acceleration (you only need to be on or off)
L1/R1 = left/right airbrake
R2 = Fire
L2 = Absorb

Damn I want to pick up Wipeout so bad, but I have to wait until a sale. I did pick up monster of the deep a few weeks ago and finally played it. Its pretty cool, and a semi action game.

So I learn about this Youku App awhile ago, but never bothered because I assumed all the movies/contents are paid. Decided to try it just now, oh my god I'm blown away by it.

It's straightup a cinema app with a bunch of movies, anime, china TV shows. Some anime requires VIP pass but all of the movie selection are free and doesn't require account. Movies are older stuff but free is free. There's stuff like Antman, Guardians of the Galaxy 1, Captain America, Thor, Resident Evil, a bunch of sci-fi action movies. All in english, 3D, amazing quality, cinema environment. The quality is some of the best i've seen for 2D content translated to VR and the 3D really pops. The app is available on China store only. Worth a download for sure.

That sounds profoundly shady; I wouldn't be surprised if that's "free until the companies that own those movies find out and slap us with an international lawsuit". Marvel/Disney, in particular, is unlikely to be letting their content out without substantial compensation.

I dunno I found Megaton really enjoyable and cool, and the controls felt perfect. Really felt like a super hero or even like a super saiyan of sorts. Not sure if I changed some flight settings or not. Its definitely rough around the edges, but its very cool. Stereo issues didnt really bother me, things still felt large and to scale. But there are some weird tricks going on, or at least images not matching correctly per eye.

Also, I played ArchAngel for the first time last night. And was kinda disappointing. Production value feels really great, graphics are pretty good.
But I was really let down by the audio. Like what are they doing?
your robot moving doesnt seem to make any sounds at all, no loud foot falls, no gears sounds or robot sounds, pretty much nothing iirc. And then the guns, feels like I am shooting pee shooters, barely any gun firing audio, and no vibration when firing(just a little vibration when reloading or maybe when out of ammo?). Gun audio is a pet peeve of mine. Seems like a simple thing to do for a large impact / pay off. These things should feel large and huge especially for a mech. All you can really hear the whole time is dialogue and radio chatter and enemies being hit/explosions, just makes things feel very weak and small and disconnected.

heres an example, just seems you are floating/flying through the level.

Hmmm, not sure I'm feeling Arizona Sunshine. Even with Aim the controls are really clunky and the aiming feels super imprecise even after calibration.

I just hold X with the joint of my thumb with the tip resting on Square, and roll my thumb's lower joint to Circle to absorb. It might just be a quirk of my thumb joint that lets me do it, but I imagine there's a lot of action games that are nearly impossible without being able to do that.

yeah this seems like a simple gamer thing, being doing this for as long as I remember, I dont think its an issue for most people, just a simple roll of the thumb.
