I think the only localization change that I don't get is why they call the Florist "Kage" in the earlier ones. I understand them changing Kazama to Fuma to reduce confusion, but this one is just weird.

I'm guessing they simply thought "Florist" was too uncool of a name (even though they do refer to him as a florist) and thus decided to change it for something else that's still relevant to his role and... Japanese, I guess!

Yeah, that must be it. I googled it too and the guess is that "florist" was too feminine a name for them. When you consider how much over the top swearing there is in the Yakuza 1 dub, I can buy that answer, lol.

Yeah, the name change was just another silly change. At least Yakuza 4 changed his name to the more accurate "Florist" title. Yakuza 3 also renamed the orphans dog "Mami" to "Rex" because why not? Again, changed back for Yakuza 4 thankfully.

Has there been any news about the mobile game?

None that I've seen. They've been really quite on that front. We should get more news at Tokyo Game Show this year, if not sooner. I'm hoping we get more news sooner, as I really loved the videos they showed off last year for it, love the art style.

Yeah, the damage of the tiger drop in 6 and Kiwami 2 is lesser than previous games. Best damage I managed on the Tiger Drop in Kiwami 2 was going into ultimate heat mode and then tiger drop'ing enemies (also worth noting - in Kiwami 2 when going into ultimate heat mode the window for the tiger drop widens even more to comical levels, I actually managed to parry almost every hit Amon threw at me at one point. Felt so darn good!)

The coolest thing about 6's tiger drop thanks to the new physics engine though is the fact that you can cause a domino effect if you do it in close proximity to other enemies - hit one with it and you can send him flying backwards into other enemies smacking them as well. Its cool to watch, even if its not all that effective damage wise.

That's good to know, thank you! At first I thought I was doing something wrong. Definitely have to try it out with a group of enemies and even in ultimate heat mode. In general I love how I can use the physics to my advantage in battle.

Yo Yakuza era...

Playing through 4 right now so I can play 5 and be ready for 6. Just had a quick question - are there certain sidequests from 4 which are relevant in 5? I noticed this happen from 3-4 so I wanna make sure I don't miss anything.

Really, really excited to jump into 5. Now to duck outta the thread to avoid spoilers.

I guess they thought Mami wasn't masculine enough for us westerners lol

I really love Kiryu's hilarious walking animation in 3/4. He straight up walks like he's got a giant stick shoved so far up his ass it's beading out into his nasal cavity xD

Reminds me of the infamous hunch run in Dead Rising, for the opposite reason lol

Yeah, that run animation is so chunky and stiff. Looks super funny.

Saejima's too. Dude runs like he's got an adult diaper filled with tons of poop.

Glad someone noticed lol.
In other news, already got six videos on my playlist:

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8uyrjWpGs0kCAr1xKBDL2AfQFTjxzqp3

The game is long. Like, 0 long. It starts slow but now its getting really good.
IF I would rate now, would be in quality:

Y0> Y2> Y1> Y5> Y6> Y4> Y3.

I gave the Y6 demo a try and man...the change of engine really shows the seamless building interiors add so much more to an already immersive city. Of course i didn't finish the demo, i'm keeping anything story related for when i get my hands on the full game.

Also, my SO finally ended up trying Yakuza thanks to the demo of Y6 and now she's interested in trying the serie. \o/ Hurray!

Yeah there are. Nothing you absolutely need to know or anything, but it's fun to notice if you've played the games before.

I thought it was more like "Haters gonna hate" or "Like a boss" walk kinda style.

But fortunately 0 tone this down & more natural.

As the father of a 5 month old girl, the Haruto stuff hit me pretty hard in Yakuza 6. The karaoke song "Hands" that you unlock after finishing the main story almost made me tear up. The Yakuza team really doesn't get the credit it deserves in the West.

I already posted this in the Yakuza 6 discussion thread but I also wanted to say it here.

The Yakuza series, bringing families together ;)

The (Yakuza 6 Chapter 2 boss)

Akiyama fight was so ridiculous I half expected a heat action where Haruto blocks an attack with a rattle.

I'd pay good money to see that. I mean, I'll pay good money to buy 6 anyway, but that would have been hilarious. Thankfully Haruto does get one brilliant moment later in the game.

I restarted Yakuza 0 yesterday. Time to give it the playtime it deserves, I just played the main story when I played it last year cuz I didn't know half the shit that I was missing(more like 90% lol.) With every mainline entry under my belt, except for 2, I think I can do it justice now.

I'm watching the SEGA stream, and they said Kiwami 2 will have the licensed music. They also added a "sorry" because they're aware that might not be a good thing to some fans lol.

That's absolutely hilarious. Of all the games people would have actually been happy with the music not get used it'd have been Kiwami 2. Why could the license holders for the music in 6 not been cooler :(

Oh well, that should also mean the last enforcer mission doesn't have its music changed either, which I am very happy with. Yay!

Nice to hear that they are even making slight changes to the dialogue compared to 2. This game is seemingly going to tick every box.

really dont understand chapter 13 on legend in 0. The car part is just awfully designed with terrible hit boxes on the drivers. Then afterwards at the escort part, she loses half her health if someone grabs her for 1 second. Doesnt seem possible with what I have. I havent even come close to being at risk to losing at any other point in the game so far, now this is ridiculously difficult.

Edit: finally did it. Wow, hardest part in the game by far to this point.

Oh, this totally slipped my mind!

To the person who specifically asked many pages back in this thread, and to those who're generally interested about Binary Domain, I managed to ask Producer-san Daisuke Sato about Binary Domain while at the Gallery Nucleus event. I had my chance while he was autographing my Yakuza 6 "Essence of Art" book, which is why you won't hear this on the Q&A video from the art gallery.

Anyway, I asked him "Will we ever see a return to the Binary Domain series?"
And... he just laughed. That was it. That was his answer. So take that as you'd like, but that seemed like a pretty definitive "never again" to me. As someone who also enjoyed BD: sorry, guys!

Sega arranging deals so that Kiwami 2 is the first game with licensed music makes perfect sense since it's the first game that was made /after/ the series got popular in Japan, so it's only logical that every game will be like that going forward, good stuff.

What's that about the comment that this may be a bad thing though? I know nothing about the licensed stuff in K2.

In a fairly important scene in Kiwami 2, this song replaces this song from the original release of the game.

I also think some folks might not be huge fans of SiM.

Definitely agree that it's a really good thing if we're going to be getting all the licensed music in the future though.

Wow I... See. It's pretty weird that in a way I think the new one is more fitting for that scene but I still would rather have the original :( oh well.

yay another one down. Great game, but not my favorite. I thought the story was meh, but I am really not a fan of prequels at all to begin with. Much better than 5. I think 2 is my favorite still.

I'm about to introduce myself to the world of Yakuza soon. A friend of mine is nearly done with Yakuza 0 and I'll be getting it off of him in a trade.

He also has Kiwami, which I'm debating if I should grab from him as well.

So my understanding is, one could start with Yakuza 0? Where does Kiwami fit in all of this? Should they be played back-to-back?

A lot of people lavish high praise on 0, is Kiwami a worthy supplement/follow up to that?

Help me get started, guys.

Kiwami is best thought of as an expansion for 0. Yes it's a remake of the first game, but it's self structured as a sequel/dlc for 0 now and has cutscenes/side content that directly references 0. 0 is best thought of as retroactive continuity, with the designers basically setting a new entry point of the series at 0 instead of the first game.

Well, since they locked my thread for no reason I will post this here.
The chat-live sexy whatever it is for Y6 is sexist. Should have be censored. Period.

I guess some people don't like the expository nature of 0's narrative and prefer the simpler storylines of the other games. After doing 0, 1, 2, 3, and half of 4 so far though, I've gotta say that nothing has hit the highs of 0 for me. Best protagonist and villain characterization, great chapter cliffhangers, and excellent music and tone to wrap it all together nicely.

I disagree. Why should it?

In a game that takes place in a red light district in a seedy part of town, it's a silly and appropriate addition.

I read somewhere (forgot where) that these sexy minigames and such aren't demonizing or critiquing the idea of "Ladies of the Night" or other similar professions unlike other media. Instead, the series depicts them as regular people living regular lives who decided to make a living by being sexy and that there's nothing wrong with that. So that's my take on it as well. These people exist and instead of actively censoring these instances, we should instead understand where they're coming from.

Same here. I played them all back to back and 0 was definitely in a league of its own. I enjoy the story of every Yakuza game a lot, but there's always compromises and really dumb plot points that I have to overlook, even in 2, but 0 is so tight and cohesive in its narrative, and they really nailed the dual protagonist format.

I really hope we get something comparable at some point.

Well that much should be obvious. However, someone should have brought in a copy to sign for him. That is something that he would have appreciated...

I didn't know Kiwami now has ties directly to 0. I was about to buy Kiwami to give the series a real go around this time. I'll be sure to get 0 instead.

I played 3 right when it came out with no prior experience with Yakuza. I enjoyed it, but never played the following titles.

Just finished Ishin. Still gotta do the rest of the chalice dungeons and fight Amon, but I've seen the story, done the substories and much of the content in the game.

This was a impressive game. I think it's one of the best Yakuza games I've played, maybe just under Y0 and Y2. At first I was pretty put off by the idea of importing it, but it turned out to be fairly easy to understand everything, plot, mechanics, substories, items, etc.

The four combat styles work incredibly well in this title. In a way I think I prefer them to Y0/Kiwami's use of multiple combat styles. They all felt very distinct and purposeful, yet they have larger strengths and weaknesses and needed to be switched around in unoptimal situations.

I'm pretty sure Ishin has the largest number of boss fights in the series as well as a ton of very memorable boss moments. It also goes crazy overboard with fan-service(not the sexual type). I'm usually not really down with fan-service, but damn I gotta say I was served exactly what I wanted here. The entire cast is made up of major characters from every entry in the series. It toys with your expectations based on how these characters acted or were presented in the original games, which made for a pretty interesting and fun experience.

The OST is very strong, definitely up there with the best of the franchise.

I feel like I spent too much time doing friendships, I believe Yakuza 0 cut down on those a bit which I'm probably happy about. Overall you can see a bunch of stuff that Ishin introduced, that then got refined in Y0, so it's a neat experience going back and seeing the process.

Loved that you could swap down to a shitty sword if you wanted to make sure a late game boss was still challenging, but I almost wish there was an option that would allow bosses to scale up. I want to be able to do the side content, including the chalice dungeon, without fear of ruining boss fights. Although this is a problem that persists in the other Yakuza titles as well.

I used KHHsubs and Salty Yen's guides. KHHsubs has written plot summaries of every scene in the game, as well as explanations of mechanics, menus, sub-stories and more. Salty Yen is a Japanese dude who did live English voice translations for the game. You could definitely play through with just one of these guides and have no problem understanding the game, but using the two of them was nice as well. I'd recommend everyone who's remotely interested to pick up this game, it's definitely one of the best games of this generation.

Been listening to more City Pop lately, and man Mariya Takeuchi's Plastic Love is such a jam. Would've been a perfect dance song in Yakuza 0.

I'm not usually big on remasters, but would love to see a Y0 remaster when the PS5 comes out, and have them put in a bunch of period-authentic tracks. I feel they should especially replace all the dance songs with real songs from that period. I love the made-up karaoke songs in Y0, but the dance stuff really misses the mark for me and doesn't really hit the vibe of that period.
