So while I've been waiting for my copies of Ishin and Kenzan to arrive, I started a playthrough of the OG Yakuza 1 on PS2, and well it's been... something, lol. I looked up the voice actors, and they're actually all quite talented, so I have to assume that it must have been an issue with the directing that led to the awkwardness. My biggest take away though has to be how short this game is. Aside from the lack of Majima and Nishiki scenes, which I knew about going in, there seems to be less dialogue and even parts such as in the beginning of Kiwami where Kiryu buys Yumi the ring, are absent. At the rate I'm going, I might be able to beat it in 2 or 3 days versus the normal 2 to 3 weeks it typically takes me to finish a Yakuza game.

Overall though, I don't think it's bad, but this series has definitely come a long way. Even the jump from Yakuza 1 to 2 is quite a noticeable improvement.

Yeah. Even if you try 100%ing the game to fight Amon its still a really short time. Its just nice to see how much more content they add from game to game when you go back to the beginning! Only real issues that hurt my Yakuza 1 playthroughs are the camera. lock on and lack of heat actions. Between the 3 it makes it just less fun compared to any of the other games in the series. Still good, but Kiwami is just way better to me for the combat alone.

Yeah, the camera and combat were much improved in the sequels, and that goes for the AI too, since spamming square, square, triangle renders even bosses helpless. I've been plowing through it mostly to see how much its content differs from Kiwami's, and it's been an interesting experience in that regard - there's a lot more "give this guy item A so you can give another guy item B' type of sidequests, such as the one involving paintings for example.

I always assumed there was the possibility that the demo trophies could sync and the actual game ones would simply belong to a different list.

They could do that, sure. If they want to be dicks. The thing on their end is that it would cost them money to recode the trophy list. There's really no reason to do it.

I didn't mean that they'd do it purpose, but rather than a second list would be generated because the "full demo" isn't the same application as the real game and thus can't share the same trophy list.

This is conjecture though, I'm not very knowledgeable about these things.

oh no, the "demo" that they put up was the full game. The trophies didn't sync initially because they hadn't been put up on PSN at the time.

Oh I know, but the fact that they overlooked it and the app even has a different icon (one that actually has the word Demo) may mean that it isn't the exact same as the normal full game, but rather the demo without any "locks" so to speak.

Yeah, for some strange reason they cut the paintings quest in Kiwami. Its not a big loss as its not that great of a side story, just seems odd that its cut while other pretty so-so ones are kept (thankfully we got far better side stories added into Kiwami that are much funnier). Not sure which other Yakuza 1 side stories were cut (bar the original hostess stories) if any, if I have some spare time one of these days I'll look it up. I did similar for Kiwami 2 around its release and basically they chopped out a small number of so-so quests from 2 and replaced them with newer ones which were much more entertaining to go through.

I just went through the final 3 chapters of Kiwami in a sitting and I'm speechless right now, what a fucking rollercoaster of emotions

Might need some time to process everything, but for now I'll say that the final boss fight is one of the most epic ones I've ever experienced in a videogame, if not the most one

0 elevates the emotional impact of Kiwami so much, it's wonderful. When I played 1 I thought those parts were cool but nothing too special, but reexperiencing them in Kiwami after 0... Whew.

Definitely. Even though Zero is the better game objectively, I think I have enjoyed Kiwami slightly more just for the emotional impact the story have had on me

So due to a recent thread in OT discussing the site, I made a leap over to gaf and checked out the Y thread for shits and giggles.

like 90% of the posts since the changeover is that YArk guy posting his videos xD

I understand the hustle, but man dude gotta slow it down a bit. It wouldn't shock me if he was perm'd over here before the end of the year, honestly.

He's become something of a small meme in my group of friends. We enjoy speculating on how many Yakuza places he'll appear in. It's like Majima Everywhere, but YakuzaArk92 Everywhere on the internet.

Yeah. That final boss fight was epic. I'm half tempted to give 2's the nod for overall epicness but its a close one. Both are fantastic characters at the end, both also have amazing final boss themes.

Oh, that's just for mainline Yakuza games though. If we count spinoffs, Ishin still wins. That's even more epic, somehow.

I just reached the finale chapter of Kiwami, some random thought about the game.

1) Ignoring the Majima tree, this must be by far the easiest game to complete all the skills.
2) If we combine this with how short the game is, I played this game in a very relaxed pace, even I was capable of doing most sidequests that I normally do in a first run.
3) That being said, completing the tree skill made me realize something that I always wondered. What's the point of increasing your hit points if for most of the game you still do pretty much the same damage? in that sense the scaling is weird.
4) Also, this game must have the hardest boss fights in the whole series, even with all maxed out, I still have lots of troubles with some enemies.
5) I love the "ps2" feeling of the game, in that sense the remake was well done.

Overall, is a great game, isn't as awesome as Zero, but is still an amazing game which imo its biggest strength is how short is, I know that people loves to do lots of things in this game, but I feel that is better to left them for the post game,I was thinking of 100% this game and beating it on legend, but the difficulty on normal combined with how worthless seems to be increasing your strength is scaring me off

I just finished Yakuza 4 and I don't know what the general consensus on that game is but I *loved* it. It might be my second favourite after 0

The only thing that was a bummer for me was that the most difficult fight in the final chapter was with Tanimura because I super did not like his fighting style, while I really liked everyone else's. I ended up just bumping it down to easy so I could mash through it. Also the way they treated Hana was pure trash she deserved better

Other than that it was good as hell

Do you guys know if Yakuza 6's Japanese theme song was released as a single in Japan when the game came out? It's a lovely song and I'd like to buy it if it got a Yakuza packaging.

No, it wasn't.
I looked up the song and I found that the song is from Yamashita Tatsuro's album released in 1988. 1998 is the year of RGG0!!. And also, there are five songs by him in RGG. I didn't notice most of them when I played 6.

Hey do you folks know where the best place to import Yakuza OSTs would be? Ebay and Amazon.co.jp don't seem to have all that much stock or have prices that are all over the place.

I was about to order a couple of them from http://www.cdjapan.co.jp but I thought I should confirm with y'all that I shouldn't be ordering from somewhere in particular.

Yakuza 5 looks absolutely insane for a PS3 game
Agreed. I imagine Y0 on PS3 also looks incredible too.

That's too bad. Your pictures reminded me that I still need to buy Loser from Yakuza 3.

It was my first taste of the series & I loved it as well. It's just behind 0 for me but I'm dying to finally play 2 (Kiwami 2) later this year.

My go to is usually Amazon.co.jp myself. Mainly since they take care of any import costs (while charging an estimate at checkout) and refund you if they pay less than expected. They also use DHL consistently (aka every time) which are reliable for me in the UK and are quick.

Once got a CD I think 2 days after it released in Japan which was the quickest turnaround time for a CD pre-order I've had from them as well.

So I didn't realize I missed the announcement for Yakuza Kiwami 2. So happy :D
Holy smokes, I missed that too. Great news. August is perfect timing. I just finished my first 2 Yakuza games (Kiwami and then Zero) over the past few months so that leaves me some good buffer time because the games are so jam-packed with content. I'll definitely be picking it up, and am looking forward to my first experience with the Dragon engine.

Something I love about the Yakuza games: the fact that I can play the game long after I'm done with the story and sidequests just to enjoy some mini-games, be it bowling, karaoke, Mahjong, Shogi and of course the arcade games. And just the fact that there's now an easy and convenient way to at least play the arcade mode of Virtua Fighter 5 is absolutely fantastic. I think I spent like almost 2 hours just playing VF5 already. Next to PuyoPuyo, Yakuza 6 also includes all the classic arcade games from Yakuza 0 thankfully, so the game will definitely stay on my hard drive for a long time after I'm done, just to have the covenienvce to play some classic arcade titles. I did the same with the older titles as well.

As far as I know, exclusively speaking about the Club Sega arcades, Kiwami 2 drops all the classic arcade games including VF5 and PuyoPuyo but newly adds Virtua On (hell yeah!) and brings back Virtua Fighter 2, which was already part of Yakuza 5. And of course new additions outside of Club Sega and the return of Shogi and the Casino.

yeah, Kiwami 2 gives you a different roster of arcade games. Virtual On and the toilet mini games are the new inclusions (with Virtual On being amazing). Also, the crane game is back. VF2 also returns and is as amazing as ever (keep forgetting how amazing this game was back in the day). Hopefully Shin RGG goes the route of putting new games in the arcade, as there are many others that would be great to include finally. Maybe keep Puyo Puyo or VF5 as those are fantastic so I'd totally be happy seeing those again. As much as I love the 80's AM2 games, those have been done to death now so I kinda hope they aren't included, or if they are they still include a good 3+ more new arcade games on top of them.

anyone have tips for yakuza 0 on legend difficulty? Is there a specific style for both characters I should be sticking to with upgrading? Just trying to do a quick speed run for the trophy

Yeah, that would definitely be great if VF5 and PuyoPuyo would return in Shin RGG. And some new ones outside the known classic AM2 games would be great too, I agree. While I return to some Fantasy Zone and Hang-on from time to time, I'd definitely love to see some new ones.

By the way, since you talked about the Tiger Drop move when playing the Japanese version. I finally unlocked it and also the upgrade (the parry window is way higher with the upgrade) but trying it on a story boss in chapter 7 (just finished that one) I noticed that it's actually not that powerful anymore compared to the older games? One hit only resulted in a very small fraction of the enemy's health bar going down. Or will it be more powerful once I level up Kiryu's strength or other things?

My favorite thing about 6 is easily the interior detail. They nailed the feeling of going into Club Sega then going back out into the (blinding) exterior.

Yeah, I agree. I have so much fun looking at all the little details in rooms / buildings. They always went above and beyond with some very high attention to detail in the older details, but it feels like they put even more attention to detail in Yakuza 6. Also I never thought how immersive and amazing the seamless transitions between street level and the inside of buildings would feel.

Yeah, the damage of the tiger drop in 6 and Kiwami 2 is lesser than previous games. Best damage I managed on the Tiger Drop in Kiwami 2 was going into ultimate heat mode and then tiger drop'ing enemies (also worth noting - in Kiwami 2 when going into ultimate heat mode the window for the tiger drop widens even more to comical levels, I actually managed to parry almost every hit Amon threw at me at one point. Felt so darn good!)

The coolest thing about 6's tiger drop thanks to the new physics engine though is the fact that you can cause a domino effect if you do it in close proximity to other enemies - hit one with it and you can send him flying backwards into other enemies smacking them as well. Its cool to watch, even if its not all that effective damage wise.

They gotta fix instances of Kazuma and Fuma if they ever bring these games to the PS4.
They started fixing them in Yakuza 4, so for sure they'd be fixed. Kiwami 1 (and soon to be 2) are translated from scratch and it shows. Kiwami's translation was fantastic, and 6's also looks to be just as great as the last few games. It really does just leave 3 in real need of a remake/remaster from scratch. Get all the content in the game this time, retranslate it so stuff like Fuma, Rex etc. are gone and back to what they should be. Just another reason why 3 totally deserves a remaster!
