Hey! I'm trying to pick out a wireless charger for my iPhone X on Amazon, and I keep getting overwhelmed by the mixed reviews, big range of prices, and wether something is fast charge or not, wether it comes with the adapter or not, etc.

Is there a good, fast charging Qi charger that has everything I need and works well with iPhone X? I'm cool with a pad or a standing charger at this point, just want a good recommendation.

Thanks!

Lol that's funny because it 100% doesn't work for me while I'm brushing MY teeth.

Weird. I absentmindedly raised my phone while brushing and saw it unlock and thought "that's funny" and tried it again, intentionally not pointing it at me until i was brushing... worked again. Must be seeing enough of my face to make the match.

Hmm yeah super strange. I remembered cause I had meant to make a post about Face ID not working when brushing teeth and forgot lol.

Getting used to this coming from a 6+ running iOS10 (never bothered updating due to touch disease). Loving it so far!

Picked up the Anker Karapax case but seems kinda heavy compared to the super light Zoogue cases I used to use.
Saw this one on a FB ad - looks nice but kinda expensive https://www.mous.co/cases/iphone/x/aramid-carbon-fibre
Anyone use it before?

Also considering insurance for $13/Mo since I have a baby and live in nyc. I used to get insurance for the first year on my phones. Chase Sapphire Reserve covers me for only 4 months.

iMessage. Use on WiFi or data. Not reliant on both or just one. Uncompressed video and messages. Gifs. Quick. Easy to use. Pick up from one or the other. Use phone number or email.

Sure maybe WhatsApp. But again, you're using separate apps and asking other people to download it which never happens most of the time.

Oh, yeah that's pretty much Whatsapp. Light app, very fast, do everything pretty much with it. Not big here in the US of course, but it's pretty much the defacto messaging and calling app for much of the world. When I'm in Mexico, Costa Rica, Peru... everything is Whatsapp, no matter what brand of phone.

Idk what to tell you; i prefer just putting my phone on a wireless charging stand and walking away rather than having a cable run from my pc and plugging into my iphone everytime i want to charge it. the only time i connect my iphone now is in the car to use carplay. Its just preference at the end of the day.

Everyone has a different setup I suppose, but I have a dedicated cable at my nightstand, another in the living room, and one at work. Where ever I am I just plug in the phone and leave it. (Or continue to use in bed, chair, etc)
It's pretty straightforward, and I'm not sure I'll be replacing any with charging stands since I can't use them while charging. Maybe work?

Was thinking of getting this one for work. Was about $24 but seems to have sold out today. I wonder why.... haha

Anker is a reliable brand. And note that to use the "full" 10W fast charge mode, you also need the quick charger ac adapter. Otherwise it's the normal 5W.

I noticed that all of their Qi wireless chargers are listed as unavailable, at least on the US side. Unless they are completely sold out, I'm not sure why that is.

This camera is something else. I shot against the sun as an experiment and it turned out far better than I hoped for.

How often are you in a situation where you're rushing to charge your phone? I do the vast majority of my charging overnight or at my desk and in both of those cases the convenience of wireless charging far outweighs the slow speed

If I do find myself in a hurry to charge, I can always just plug it in

Yup. I got a wireless charger for home and one at my desk at work. Because it's charging constantly at work, in my car (for CarPlay) to and from work, and again at home when I'm not using it, I find that I don't have battery anxiety anymore.

Now of course all of this was possible before by plugging in, but because of the convenience of wireless, I don't even think about it.

Samsung users have seriously been living the good life with this feature. Too bad it took Apple so long to implement. And they didn't even "perfect" it (as their excuse is whenever they're late to implement it). It's just the regular Qi standard.

They were in stock this morning for sure as I nearly ordered it.
That Apple demand...

Also, FYI, I believe only the one I linked to is Qi compatible.
The others aren't, so I bet there will be some disappointed folks.

This is the one I went with. Apple approved, good design and will support Fast Charging when it's available.

Does anyone has this problem with Spotify? I use BT Headphones and whenever I get a call and answer through them I cannot resume my music, I have to manually close the app and then open it again to continue playing music. I travel on bike often and is super annoying having to stop every time someone calls me. I am on 11.2 beta

Oh nice, thanks! I was considering that one. Good to know it works well.

Edit - actually, I see that fast charging is coming to iPhone X in an update supposedly, and the one you linked doesn't have fast charging, should I get the more expensive model with fast charge to future proof myself?

Because standing in line for hours for a phone is just stupid.

I didn't stand in line and neither did most people. It also has nothing to do with the phone itself.

Ads that try to insult the competition -- and by association the people buying iPhones -- are never as good as just selling your own product. It comes off as desperate. It certainly didn't make me think, "You know, you're right. I'm an idiot for not accepting Samsung as my lord and savior! Screw the X!"

So my usual response is:

Does the X support fast charging? If not, I'm assuming we need to wait for the next model for that?

It currently supports wired fast charging. Wireless fast charging is coming in a future software update. You'll need a USB-C to Lightning cable, and stronger power adapter than the 5W that comes with the phone. It's important to not purchase a third party USB-C to Lightning cable, as it can cause damage to the device. It's safe to buy a third party power adapter, as long as it supports USB-PD.

It's one of the more expensive pads, but I trust Mophie as a brand and it will support Fast Charging when it's patched into iOS. This is one of those things that's purchased once, used daily and will be around for a long time so I didn't mind spending a bit more for it.

so re: FACEID.

I reset the face ID and like some users have suggested:

1: normal front on.
2. 1 from belowish where you'd hold it (so you're looking down on it)

and now it seems to unlock much more easily.

My previous face scan was based off 2 front facing ones.

I think it's long overdue that Apple allows us to customize the status bar.
There's a bunch of wasted space up there, at least add percentage above the battery.
...
The space above the right icons shows the data activity bar. Could technically hide the battery percentage for data activity.
They definitely should open it up to third-party developers. It'd be much more of a hit than the message stickers were.
But it is open for 3rd party apps. Devs can get a mesh of your face that is very accurately representing your facial expressions. AFAIK snapchat is using it for a few filters already. Nothing stops devs from mapping your mesh to their own virtual faces/emoji to recreate animoji.

I mean opening up Animoji as an iMessage feature that third-parties can do with their own 3D models.

What a response. The person you quoted had a good point about the effectiveness of dissing the market you are trying to acquire. Can't handle people having differing opinions about things or something?

This might actually be the year that samsung 'earns' these snarky hit ads lol. Have seen quite a bit of 'speed test' comparison videos and note 8 holds apps in memory better, and loads social media stuff quicker (ios still dominates at game load times).

True these kind of speed tests are silly, but from my usage, twitter, discord, facebook, youtube all reload REALLY frequently.... Like I dont' remember it being this bad on my 6s plus and that only had 2gb of ram. Wonder if its due to ios11?

Anyone else notice this?

We all know Samsung would kill for the type of demand Apple gets for iPhones each year. These kind of ads come off as desperate to me.

With the 70 different versions of phones, and everything else that's Samsung, their income is still 1/2 of Apples.

They tried it years ago too

Are there any (non-shit) alternatives to Apple's official USBC Lightning cable? I already have a fast charge capable adapter, do I really have to shell out for the official cable?

Is it normal for UPS tracking to fall behind? I haven't had an update on the tracking for my X since Saturday afternoon, a departure scan in Louisville. I'm scheduled for delivery later today and was hoping it would be ready for pickup at the UPS CC near by at 8 am.

I'm hoping UPS is just behind, but given that it's been almost 36 hours since an update, maybe there is something wrong? Hope not.

There's definitely something odd going on with the 8, 8+ and X, I recall seeing a speed test where's the 7+ didn't have to reload apps as much.

So, is it possible for a battery case that charges the phone wirelessly (to avoid the typical extra chin) to exist?

Sure. Back when Nokia was a thing, they had a portable charger that charged the phones wirelessly. And you could charge *it* wirelessly too. So would be easy enough to build that into a case. Would be quite thick though.

You can still get portable wireless chargers so you could strap one to your phone with rubber bands..

Almost guaranteed, the tech for behind the screen sensors is almost there. The apis and layout guides for the X basically ignore the notch while mentioning the notch.

Almost there? I sincerely doubt it. Current LG prototype Transparent OLED displays are lower resolution and around 60% light transmittance, which is the big problem - how are you going to capture competitive camera images? With an array of cameras in the "notch" there's just too much dependance on emittance and transmittance of light. There's also the earpiece to consider.

Apple has the money and R&D to figure out something, eventually, but I really doubt it's within the next 5 years. For now, the API handling is just smart consideration that maybe the "notch" has a different width in the future, or gets moved to a forehead (Galaxy-style). And since Apple isn't building the display themselves...they might be stuck waiting for Samsung or LG to come up with the right idea first.

Are there any (non-shit) alternatives to Apple's official USBC Lightning cable? I already have a fast charge capable adapter, do I really have to shell out for the official cable?

None that I've heard of...:/

Anyone else prefer a sleeve over a case? A nicely broken-in leather case (Sena Ultraslim is my go-to) is pretty nice if you want to go naked but keep you phone in your pocket with other stuff or want something to set it on.

Mophie's stuff is just ridiculously priced. My biggest tech purchasing regret is buying a 10,000 mAh portable battery from Mophie for $80 at best buy since I didn't know any better. It died in 8 months. The same size battery is 25 bucks front anker and lasted me 2 years along with a free replacement from their awesome CS.

It's like spending $40 for a screen protector in a mall. Just not worth it.

Photos are 2d. This is a 3D map of your face. And unless you turn it off you have to look at your phone to unlock it. It doesn't work if your eyes are closed or not looking at your phone. I can have it right in front of my face and if my eyes are pointed away it doesn't unlock. Face masks also don't work. Face ID is a lot more sophisticated than you give it credit.

boo, I was looking forward to reading the first instance of a wife catching her husband cheating as she logged into his phone with a photo.
That would be easier with Touch ID since you can do that to someone while they sleep. Face ID is more secure in that sense. I have a friend who had a boyfriend that unlocked her phone while she was sleeping to look at her stuff.

iPhone X makes top bars unreachable and bottom bars inconvenient. Many fundamental iOS UI paradigms need to be rethought.
