Ni No Kuni 2 tells the story of King Evan Pettiwhisker Tildrum; he is a young, fox-eared ruler of the mythical kingdom of Ding Dong Dell. While a kindly character, Evan is considered too timid to rule the kingdom and is ousted by his own people. Undeterred, Evan enlists the help of a human from the real world—a middle-aged teacher named Roland—in order to help win back his crown (and, according to Bandai Namco, give the game a mature edge). Along the way he meets the likes of Tani, daughter of a group of pirates, along with tiny spirit creatures called Higgledies.

Evan:
3dPdLG8.png

Previously a king of Ding Dong Dell. After the death of his father, he was crowned as king. He's bright and kindhearted, but due to his withdrawn personality, people doubted he'd make a good king. It wasn't long until he was chased out of Ding Dong Dell following a coup d'état. After being separated from Alfini, who was both a mother and sister figure to Evan, he decides on becoming a king. In his adventure, the young king declares that he'll unify Ni no Kuni, and builds his own kingdom.

Roland:
rurDS1d.png

In Ichi no Kuni (the "regular" world) he's a 48-year old president of a large country. As a young leader, he has exceptionally high approval rating. In Ni no Kuni, he's a 20-year-old young man. He's extremely straightforward and has a strong sense of justice to go with it. He can also be a bit too stubborn at times. He has a bit of a complex of uncertainty that makes him wonder if he's doing the right thing for his country as its president.

Tani:
IctCgLq.png

Daughter of Gatto, the boss of the Sky Pirates. After being raised by the bossy Gatto, Tani has gained a bit of a strong-minded personality from the Sky Pirate boss. She actually likes cute and girly things, but she doesn't show it since it doesn't suit her character. She was abandoned as a child and isn't blood by blood to Gatto.

Higgledies:
YrFb39i.png

The Hiddledies are "Spirits of the Heart" that can only be seen by the pure-hearted. They exist not only in humans, but so in the hearts of animals, water, wind, and such, to whom they lend their power. They can help out in battle or help you reach areas you can't get to on your own.

Lofty:(not playable)
2Z0uEol.png

An adorable faerie that imbues Evan with wizard-like powers.

Battle System:
xD8X8Uo.gif

Battles in Ni No Kuni 2 have taken a turn towards real-time action. You'll have full control over your chosen character's movement, and each party member has access to different special attacks. You'll also be able to enlist the help of small creatures known as Higgledies, which can swarm your foes.

While largely real-time, there's still an element of menu mashing involved in combat. Square and Triangle launch light and strong attacks, while holding down the right trigger brings up a choice of four special attacks and magical powers. These include a water attack, which requires a surprisingly precise aim to use, along with a pair of sword swinging flurry attacks and a healing ability. All the while, Higgledies roam the combat area, launching elemental attacks, which are based on their colour. Red for fire, blue for ice, green for healing.

Being real-time, position is as important as the type of attacks you use, but the Higgledies introduce another layer of strategy. Each group will periodically glow, during which time Evan can give them a morale boost by joining them in battle, increasing their attacking strength. Combat is, by design, a much more frantic affair than that of Ni No Kuni, with each swing of the sword accompanied by a quick dash over to the Higgledies to secure some much needed backup

Skirmish Mode:
cwzovna.gif

Skirmish Mode is a separate mode that feels like a mixture of Fire Emblem and a tactical strategy game. Players command small troops with specialized weaponry, chipping away at enemy factions as they head toward an objective on the map. What I played wasn't quite as strategic as the mode's clear influences, but it was still about a thousand times more fun than any battle in the first Ni no Kuni. Learning which troops worked best against which and charging up their special attacks was a fast and fun challenge, one I had to actually be torn away from.

Kingdom Building:
In Kingdom mode, you are recruiting citizens to join your cause and expand your kingdom called Evermore. Expanding your kingdom not only shows up visually but also gives you crafting opportunities, from researching new magic to building item shops. You recruit new members by proving yourself to the citizens of other kingdoms during your journey.

More importantly, as you recruit citizens, you can add them to your infantry for big battles. The types of citizens you recruit also determine your abilities in battle, such as whether you have archers or warriors. In this mode, Evan can control up to four units. Your soldiers attack automatically when you get near an enemy, but you can use the shoulder buttons for positioning to get the upper hand. While this may seem simple, there's more depth to it than meets the eye. You can use your guts gauge to improve attacking with an all-out assault, or choose quick march to get out of a sticky situation. In addition, the units' weapons have a rock-paper-scissors set of strengths and weaknesses, akin to Fire Emblem. Each unit also has its own special tactic, which is on a cooldown. In my demo, one had the ability to call in an airstrike, while my other group could heal allies in peril. Another cool feature is shock tactics, which make you invincible for a short time to deal an onslaught of attacks

"Leaf Book" is the social media platform of Ni no Kuni, where the world's inhabitants post photographs as they please. Since there may be valuable information posted, be sure to check it every so often.

Higgledie Almanac:
VWTGYt0.jpg

Higgledies are "spirits of hearts" that can only be seen by individuals with pure hearts. The "Higgledie Almanac" lets you see the profiles of all the unique Higgledies that you collect.

Costumes:
In addition to their standard costumes, each character has different costumes. There may also be nostalgic costumes among them

GREAT OT!

Any reason why you transitioned into black text in the middle of it, though? Can't see crap on DarkGAF :(

Thanks for a good OT and not a multi post monstrosity. Question though. Is it normal making OTs 4 days in advance here?

I'm ready to experience what looks like the most gorgeous game ever. Haven't been excited to discover the world of a game like this in a while! I loved the first game, so I hope the same holds true for this game.

You can probably add this to the features section, it's a quote from WCCFTech's review for Post Game Content:

If you're looking for a brief, whimsical JRPG, Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom has a level of quality you won't find anywhere else. It's cute, introduces players to a magical world of all manner of beasts and magical creatures, and wraps up nicely within the 40-hour mark. However, if you're looking for something meatier and more substantial, Level-5 offers an incredible amount of post-game content while trying to toe that line of giving their latest JRPG too much bloat. Dreamer's Doors are Ni no Kuni II's version of randomized dungeons, giving players miniature adventures across a few floors in search of rare weapons and high-powered bosses. It isn't until the tenth and final Dreamer's Door that the skill challenge flips itself on its head and forces players to take a much more restrained approach. Without finishing up the Evermore research tiers, this 30-floor is nearly impossible with enemies easily breaching over level 99 if players take too long. However, this is where the crafting materials are hidden for all of the party's endgame gear and is well worth taking a few trips even through the lower floors to craft together some nice 400+ strength weaponry. There's also a set of fifty rare tainted monsters that outclass the standard bosses hidden throughout Evermore and rumor has it some even stronger hunts exist after all fifty bounties are complete.

Nice, concise OT. Though, and it might've been intentional, but the text in the additional features section is black which is pretty hard to read on the dark theme.

Anyway, looking forward to this. Still not entirely certain which version I'll snag.

e: now it's green which is still not ideal lol

Does it work better with dark green text?

72 hours from launch OT can be posted. I can't post it tomorrow, so today it is and within the guidelines.

Nice OT. With Deadfire being pushed back to May I think I'll pick this up over the weekend. A cheery, colorful RPG sounds pretty good right about now.

I guess it should be noted for those of you sensitive to spoilers: there are some mild boss / character spoilers in the OP. Stuff you won't see until you're over a third of the way through the game. I assume that if you've been watching all of the media / trailers / previews you don't care, but worth pointing out IMO.

Originally had zero interest in this game. I played NNK1 and tapped out after about 5 hours because of the bizarre difficulty spikes and the ho-hum battle system. The idea of a sequel just didn't appeal to me AT ALL when it was announced.

Then the Jason Schreier pre-review article about Kingdom Building... and the OpenCritic averages...

...... aaaaand I pre-ordered the Digital Deluxe edition last night.

There's a place in my city where they're already selling the game, and it's really tough to stick to my preordered version for this friday. Anyway, great OT!

Just preordered the Deluxe. I loved the first game. To me it was an absolute classic in the vein on Chrono Trigger, FFVII, etc. My wife loved it too, so we're both looking forward to this. I just hope I can get enough work done this week to have some time with it this weekend.

Luckily I have the next week free and I will be able to play the game!
I liked the first one but I remember the game as a heavily flawed experience.
It seems (from the previews) that the second one isn't as charming, but it plays better so I will surely like it more.
