I'm not going to review this as I've only seen four episodes so far, but what I've seen is really good. The actors are pretty new/raw and it feels like that sometimes, but the stories are good and the episodes move quickly. Also nice to have another show with a lot of diversity. Netflix just keeps bringing new stuff out though without much fanfare and shits gonna get lost. Not that it matters, but its sitting at 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Oh it's the kid from Logan. Looks like a solid show, I'll give it a try. You're right about little fanfare, didn't even hear about this one.

I liked the first episode. It's refreshing to see a coming of age tv show set in this kind of neighborhood with black people and Latinos

Yo when the drama all of a sudden hit at the end tho.....lmao. That Cesar kid is a horrible actor. I'm gonna stick with it but I hope it stays comedic. The more serious stuff is way out of their element

Jup acting is incredibad all around, and so is the writing unfortunately. It got so much forced exposition delivered by the characters that there is barely any room for a regular conversation and therefore barely any room to connect with the cast. The trailer looked decent but the first so really turned me off of this :/

Yeah Cesar is the weak link early on.

I enjoyed it. Weak dialogue throughout a lot of the show and not the best acting, but I loved what they attempted.

Hmm...I liked the first episode. Nothing struck me as awful with the acting. At the very least I'm not annoyed by the main crew like I was with the nerds in Everything Sucks.

It's a soap by heart, so if those aren't normally your thing, you'll have an issue with the plotting and dialogue.

Good soundtrack.

The first episode was pretty weak....If this wasnt a Netflix show i would never have bothered waiting for the second episode.
But the second episode has got me to atleast try keep watching.
Ill try binge it proper on Sunday.
Hopefully it doesnt get any worse.

P.S Are these kids supposed to be the same age?...15?

I legit thought i was the only person who really disliked the characters in Everything Sucks.
I tried my best to like the show but the more i watched the more annoying it got....so i dropped it.
Too many good shows and movies for me to watch a show in which i dont like the characters.

Haha I don't think you're the only one. I did enjoy the latter half of everything sucks and a lot of use in the ot felt similarly in that respect.

It wouldn't be the first time a show took a bit of time to get its footing but I get where you're coming from. I think it was a bit more tolerable being shorter episodes. I suppose it's a different change of pace from other Netflix shows where people complain that they lose steam and drag on.

Just finished this show. Yeah, I'm going to need a season 2, like, yesterday. Cesar is the weak link but the rest of the cast is great. Jamal's storyline dips in the bizarre at times but I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it. The 30 minute episodes keep the story moving and never felt like it dragged. Really enjoyable show and I hope nothing but the best for it.

Just watched the pilot. The cast definitely varies in their acting ability, and the pacing of the comedic and dramatic moments can be a bit jarring, but it's good so far and I definitely appreciate the setting and how diverse the show is

2 episodes in, good so far. Digging the black American and Mexican connection. Obviously set in LA where you have a ton of neighborhoods where black and Mexican are neighbors, so it's good to see it in a show. Kinda bummed there has to be gang bangers, but hey that's LA for you

up through 4 episodes. sometimes the characters talk too much and the comedy can be hit or miss but i'm liking it. its not taking itself too seriously. predicting something fucked up happening to the crew simply due to cesar's associations but so far its been mostly light hearted entertainment.

the crazy latina girl is so over the top but i find myself cracking up whenever she gets screen time.

Not a bad show. The acting was a bit rough in some parts. I really didn't like that Jamal was the only one who didn't have any type of love interest or even mention of a love interest.
Really reminded me of all of the white shows where everyone pairs off or gets a love interest and the lone black male is seemingly asexual.
Ending was pretty crazy though.

Not really anything unique about how it was shot but I'm not like well versed in that or anything. Hollywood reporter review pretty much mirrored my thoughts on the show:

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/review/my-block-review-1094840

Tone bounced around all over the place from comedic to serious drama, light rom com at points. Acting could be hit or miss at times but I found all the main characters likeable in some way.

Netflix kind of has the whole young adult genre on lockdown with all the stuff they are pumping out.

That ending was way too dark for what the rest of the show was. Such a weird tonal shift in these last few episodes. Though I suppose that's the point, these kids are trying to have normal goofy lives and then the poisonous reality of their world comes pouring in.

I enjoyed it. Nice vibe, easy watch, some interesting themes being explored.

Critics are so harsh these days! Hope season 2 comes round soon.

I thought the acting was fine. There's a few powerful moments and I would say the kids got across the emotions just fine and I found all of them endearing in their own way and thats all you really need to accomplish as an actor/writer.

98 percent viewer rating on RT after about 100 reviews. Good to see it getting some likes. The show can be a little rough here and there but overall I loved it. Much more than I did Everything Sucks, which I still found to be an enjoyable show. On My Block is much higher quality imo.

Really enjoyed the show

Didn't even know it existed until fired up Netflix on Saturday morning.

I really feel like Jamal was on a different show/track then the rest and curious to see what they do with season 2.

Monse, Ruby, and Olivia were in a rom/com
Cesar was in a crime movie
Jamal was in some wacky kids adventure

It's a little weird, like you've got
this goofy ass scavenger hunt juxtaposed with Cesar struggling with committing murder

It shouldn't work, but it kind of does

I really enjoyed the show. It kept me interested, and Reuben was great.

End spoilers:
Hope he didn't really die. Same for Olivia. Damn. That ending was brutal. Considering where the shot landed for both of them... it's a toss up. I sort of got spoiled on the ending by this thread though, because people kept implying that the ending was shocking, so it didn't surprise me sadly. Wish people would spoiler tag at least that much.

Jamal was straight up goonies with a grandma. I wonder if he's a dancer. That move he did was legit. lol

That ending was tough. S2 might go dark with the Santos avenging Ruby and Olivia.

Most likey Olivia will die or if not she'll leave.

Just finished this tonight. I agree with you all that the tonal shifts are all over the place, but it somehow worked.

I even liked all the characters which is rare for a TV show, they're all very endearing and funny.

I really do hope we see season 2 because obviously I need to know what happens after that finale, and plus I want to see if
Monse reconnects with her mom

I had to Google quince because it was annoying me that I didn't know what it was, and it turns out it's Spanish for 15. Are we really supposed to believe that Olivia was turning 15? I thought she was about 18/19 haha.

Holy crap this show was fantastic. Underrated as fuck. I was dying throughout the whole season. Ruby is my favorite. That ending had me shook.

you've never heard of a Quinceañera? ;)

ronnie hawk (olivia) is 18. funnily enough she's the youngest in the main cast. Ruby is 20. lol

Eddie Gonzalez On Creating Netflix's 'On My Block' as an Antidote to Depressing Hood Stories

On Tackling the Teen Dramedy Genre
We were fortunate to have Lauren as our partner, I mean, she is a YA queen, so from the jump Jeremy and I were excited to work with her on it. This is an area though in terms of the Latino world that Jeremy and I have floated in before – we've sold pilots within that world of teen drama – but the chance to do a comedy with drama in it just made sense. It's one of those things obviously inspired by my life, but also, when you look at stories like this, it's not all bleak. It's hopeful. You know, you see a lot of stories like these and it's depressing – that's not how my childhood was, so that's not the experience we wanted to portray.

On Portraying South Central Without Judgement
It comes from a place of authenticity, and people are three-dimensional. I grew up with gang members in my neighborhood, I have relatives who are gang members. And it's not this simple, one-sided story – it's complex, it's nuanced. To do justice to the world, you have to show all sides of it. That's why Cesar is so complicated, that's why Oscar is so complicated. Oscar is one of our favorite characters. He's a three-dimensional character, he's not just this intimidating person – he's complicated, and we wanted to show how he became what he became.

Just finished this show. God damn.

I assume there will be a season 2, but what the fuck at that ending. Is the moral supposed to be to shoot first?
