But I thought that I only could play fighting games by training for 100s of hours and learning 80 hit combos.

Also, while not strictly a fighter I definitely played Unreal Championship 2 like a fighter. The match starts and I swap out to my melee weapon, run around deflecting shots, bouncing off walls while swinging my blade and what not.
I was way into Unreal Championship 2 back when it came out. There were a lot of cool fighting game influenced touches besides the melee weapons, parrying, and having Raiden as a guest character, such as the Fatalities and how the UI would display your opponent's health bar across from yours like a fighting game:

And the character select screen was straight out of a fighting game too:

Now that I think about it, UC2 was also an early example of a Hero Shooter.

On Icons: Combat Arena, its not a game made by the team that made Project M. The company thats making it, Wavedash Games, formed before the PMDT shut itself down, and while it does have members of the PMDT, its about as much of a PMDT game as Doki Doki Literature Club. Link to a relevant tweet.

Okay, I'll update the OP to say that the Wavedash team made both Project M and Doki Doki Literature Club.

I liked Fight Night if that counts.

I would count it - part of my goal with this thread was to acknowledge games that aren't always thought of as "real" fighting games. I was going to include a section about Sports/Fighting Sims in the OP but I got lazy.

Metal Gun 3 was ace, I wish they made more of them. Actually I don't know if they did, it's not exactly easy to check on the doujin games scene...

The only HD quality video I could find online. Not a good representation of the game with that player vs AI but you'll get the idea of it well enough...

So yeah, Japanese indie effort from like 15 or 20 years ago... Pretty charming still if you ask me.

My three favorite fighting games are ARMS, Smash Bros and For Honor.

Traditional games have too complicated inputs to memorize.

Oh fuck, UC2 always looked so damn awesome when I was younger. Now I really wanna play it. I guess I'll have to buy the Xbox disc and play it on 360.

This thread is amazing. Great job, op.

I hope that some of the smash-likes can take off.

Evil Zone
There's only 2 button, attack and guard. I remember it was fun to play. Then i look at the video gameplay on it on youtube, and i'm not even sure anymore...
Oh yesss, I loved Evil Zone! Just triangle in combination with the d-pad, many attacks depend on where you stand (far from/near to the enemy) and you should always stay moving otherwise the enemy can block you with a special move.
Very simple yet so fun!

While it's not technically a fighting game, I do feel Overwatch's gameplay dynamics feel very much like a fighting game in spirit. Most of the basic elements like controlling space, counter-picking, character mastery, blocking, combos, etc. are basically divided up between each team member (tanks do the blocking for example).

Saint Seiya Soldiers Soul (Steam, ps3, ps4) is a pretty good 3d arena fighter. The control setup is a bit like Dragon Ball Xenoverse with special moves being accessed by holding down one of the triggers and a face button.
I quite enjoy it and it's got a nice selection of offline modes, which is a big plus in my book.

I quite enjoy arena / 3d fighters. Having special moves be simple to execute does not have to be a bad thing. You still need to know when to use them.

Yes, some people really did like PlayStation All Stars. Still the freshest take on the genre since Smash Bros.

Fun fact: Many of its lead developers are now leads at Radiant and Riot Games, and are likely working on that speculated fighting game.

It has a decent amount of single player content. Besides the story mode, there's an arcade-style mode where you play through a series of matches with each character, and a Mortal Kombat Challenge Tower-like mode where you play matches with preset characters in various special scenarios.

This thread is amazing. Great job, op.

Thanks, I'll try to update the OP when I have the time.

Totally, you can see the influence in MOBAs too. It's interesting to see other genres taking what makes fighters resonate with people and applying them to genres with more mainstream appeal.

We are missing Kill La Kill & Jump All Stars in the upcoming section.
I liked playstation all stars the one time I played it for an hour or so locally with some other folks

I purchased some of the titles from that list though (like Gundam Versus after it came out)
