I just discovered the show today and have watched the first two episodes so far. A lot of fun, looking forward to watching more.

Just one thing kind of bothers me: There is a strong emphasis (so far) on using garnets to persuade people, but garnets seem incredibly useless. The winner of the game gets them all and the losers get none, so what does it matter who holds on to them at any time? The winner will ultimately still get them all. Am I missing something here?
It would make sense if you were able to keep whatever garnets you have when you lose, but the way it is set up it just seems weird.

In the later rounds when the garnets start piling up you can use them to get advantages in the games themselves.

That makes a lot more sense, thank you. I just had that nagging feeling that I was not getting something. I don't know if they mentioned that fact so far but it's good to know.

Will be watching a lot more of this tomorrow!

I've watched all of the genius. Society game and most of crime scene. I don't know what to watch now.

I've just been rewatching season 1 of the genius lol. Any recommendations ? I think Netflix would kill it if they made crime scene and the genius.

I've only watched the first season but already want there to be more beyond the four that they made.

One of the earlier responses to the thread mentioned people like Ken Jennings being on a hypothetical USA version, and, like... yeah, dude. Please.

If you liked Poong then watch Me & My Fridge AKA "Please Take Care of My Refrigerator", on Netflix or OnDemandKorea. This is the world where he truly excels.

There is this new show featuring Jinho vs Johwan (and other people) that is MC'd by Dongmin where they battle each other playing poker.

Not subbed yet, and obviously doesn't have the big scope (or budget) of The Genius, but if it eventually gets subbed it could be fun (someone on reddit said he got goosebumps in the most recent eps).
____________

My personal recommendation would be Running Man, which I know it has absolutely nothing to do with the Genius. The game is mostly physical, not very competitive, with downtime, focused on comedy and it has some sections that doesn't work and also some fluff episodes, but when they nail it, it's amazing. The chemistry of the cast is great, and the writers have some very inspired moments that create absolute TV classics (the first spy ep., the escape feom jail ep., the one they get superpowers in the chase, the humans vs zombies, grashopper hunting, etc).

There are 391 episodes (and counting), so it should keep you busy for a while, although there are some "eras" of the show that are a bit bland and probably skipable.

After the interminable decades that were early anime fandom, I can't believe I've decided to get into another form of entertainment that leaves me waiting and searching for elusive subtitles. I'm a lover of poker, so this sounds great. There's enough Korean content on Netflix, whats deals need to be made to get most of these shows on there(Genius, etc..)? It seems like a no brainer.

I wonder if it is for the nightmare that would be licensing all tha music. I know some of the korean shows on Netflix dub the music with generic tracks or simply skip sections of the show, which is far from ideal.

Oh God yes, what am I even thinking? Moby would get PAID. Yeah, the songs would definitely have to go, unfortunately.

If there's ever an overseas adaptation of The Genius, they have to at least keep the Idiotape tracks. If I don't hear Melodie, I'm out.

Well, Spotify's Discover Weekly playlist just made my week.

It added the opening track for season 1 (I haven't gotten to S2 yet, so I'm not sure if it's the same), for a few seconds I was confused, trying to find the tab that had the show playing in the background, before realizing it was Spotify.

Season 3 spoilers

Speaking of JInho, of course he wins in the episode he appears, even if Oh Hyun-min is super sharp and had a great strategy for the game.

Chain Auction is so, so good.

You have fantastic main match. One person instantly recognizes incredibly smart strategy of using division to obscure their number, but actual winner kinda stumbles into the same strategy at the last moment and wins the game just by rearranging their signs.

It is most likely Jinho also won because Sangmin simply gave him his chips and they split the prize. Guests on this show nearly always win simply because they have no reason to betray each other unlike final 4 or final 3 contestant who can't do alliances that late into the season.

And a dramatic DM where a person who was off their game turns sure loss into victory by sheer force of personality alone.

And a fantastic "behind the scenes" where we have a clash of two smartest players on The Genius ever:

And Hyunmin mops the floor by Jinho

Finished season 3. That was so emotionally gratifying, I was truly spellbound at the finale. I think this is my favorite season yet. The characters are just too incredible.

Dongmin read Hyunmin like a fucking book at the end, that was crazy.

Took a bit of a break from Era, but I'm back and feel like ranking the Season 4 cast up to Episode 8!

The Contenders:
  1. Dongmin - I probably wouldn't like him at all in real life, but undeniably the perfect Genius player and the clear frontrunner.
  2. Hyunmin - He's been more likeable this season because he's been acting more independently from Dongmin, but I suspect that they made a non-aggression pact behind the scenes. I see Hyunmin either losing to his hyung again in the finals, or suffering an upset from either of the two dark horses.
  3. Kyunghoon - His arc is really compelling and there's nothing I want more than for him to get in the way of Dongmin's momentum. Choice casting.
  4. Junseok - Finally understand why everyone took him out back in S1E1. And his scorched earth, no-fucks approach to the game is refreshing.
  5. Jinho - He's been kind of mediocre this season, and I expect him to be the next one to go. Proof that TV is just bad for your intellect, whether you're in front of the screen or on it.
The Eliminees:
  1. Sangmin - The God, the GOAT, the Goro Majima of The Genius. I'm undecided on whether or not his early exit was ultimately a positive or negative for the season. Physically can't rank Sangmin lower than this.
  2. Yeonseung - Season 3's most valuable player. Yeonseung was the beating heart of the show.
  3. Kyungran - The Genius' Galadriel. I don't think she ever showed her full power levels. Her Loyalists vs. Rebels performance was incredible.
  4. Yoohyun - Personal favorite of mine for his YouTube antics, but he's like Yohwan in that he never really met expectations.
  5. Junghyun - Season 2's MVP, and I think we missed out on some hilarious opening scenes had he lasted a little longer.
  6. Yohwan - Pffffft. The additional rules this season were complete anathema to his playstyle so he never stood a chance.
  7. Yoonsun
  8. Jungmoon

Casting these two people was an incredibly inspired decision for Grand finale. They are being complete mavericks constantly ruining majority play.

Jesus man. Tactical Yutnori is a helluva game.

Dongmin completely exposed my boy Jinho, tbh. I was so excited to see the BoxeR and Yell0w team-up but then THAT happened. What a fucking slaughter.

I honestly believe Dongmin is some kind experimental clone of Sangmin and Jinho combined that was accidentally unleashed. He looks so old yet acts so young because he is rapidly aging, Solid Snake style.

Not Korean (Mind you, I'd love to see what they do with it!), but I'll always answer The Mole to this sort of question. There's a couple of links over in the Game Show thread, the latest Dutch series has just ended, and the latest Belgian series has just started

Sangmin with the crouching tiger, hidden dragon under the table. Holy fuck that's one of the most creative things I've ever seen

Haven't finished the episode yet but God I hate kyunghoon, his shtick of being pathetic and completely lacking authority is getting really old. Sangmin was poised to absolutely demolish the game and it all came crashing down cause this guy can't shut his mouth

Ok, just finished 4x03. OMG

Titty god = betting god. Who could imagine he would slay Sangmin on a betting game, doing mind tricks and guessing who lied to him.
The worst thing is that now people will be reluctant of choosing him as next deathmatch target.

Been really enjoying reading you guys' impressions and reactions as you have been watching them. Makes me want to go rewatch Season 4.

Looking forward to hearing what you think about the rest of the season. It has its highs and lows as a season, but it really does have some shocking moments in it.

S04E05 was another surprise.
Jungmoon vs Kyungran, who of the two was lying. I think it was Jungmoon fault because one thing is acting as if you are a loyalist helping the game, but another thing was giving them all the fucking PI numbers. She should have been smarter and just say she remembers the first 25, that's already much more than anyone so they would think of her as a loyalist, but still giving enough margin to the other rebels to make up number later.
And the professional poker player losing in the end, lol.

Ugh, I'm still reeling from S4E3

Sangmin was making such godlike plays man. The under the table eavesdropping, the secret of the box, the garnet alliance with Dongmin.

And fucking Kyunghoon screwed up every single part of every plan he was involved in. What can't you just be quiet??? And then of course when he gets to the deathmatch he becomes a mind game god and completely obliterates Sangmin.

Man oh man did this episode piss me off. It was a REALLY GOOD episode. But it really pissed me off!

If Kyunghoon doesn't get eliminated soon I'm gonna lose it tbh
