NarKarma EngineA was announced at a Sekai Project panel around... last August, I think. It's being developed by Novectacle, whose best-known (and the only translated) work is The House In Fata Morgana, a cult classic visual novel. (It's on Steam, and happens to be my favorite VN of all time.)

Synopsis:
Rice Digital said:
Upon the distant surface dwells a race of humanoid beasts, in an adventure where you become both the hero and the final villain.
From the creator of the highly acclaimed House of Fata Morgana, comes a new breed of RPG.

Deep beneath the crust dwells a race of humanoid machines and in the strata dividing them, dreams of the dead conjure up phantoms of eras long lost to time. Traversing these forgotten realms, beast and machine cross paths, bringing upon both the threat of extinction. But only one will make it through alive.

All that we know so far:
  • Release TBA by Novectacle (current goal seems to be 2019, see tweets below)
  • Localized by Sekai Project (no timeframe given for localization)
  • Coming to "PC and console" (according to Rice Digital)

As for the release date, this is what Keika Hanada (project writer, I believe, but don't quote me on that) has to say (5 Nov. 2017):

Besides this stuff, the only other info we have is the characters popping up on the website (there's five as of this writing, three of whom have been added after the website's launch). So now I'll be listing the assets for the characters we have. The full-res images are VERY high resolution!

Ablog poststates that Novectacle was formed out of a TRPG (i.e. Tabletop RPG) community, which makes me really excited for what this project might end up being- Novectacle knows what they're doing.

I think that Gao has returned from Fata Morgana for the vocals (edit: confirmed on her website), going by the BGM on the website. Yusuke Tsutsumi also lists the gameon his website(I'm so, so glad he's back), where it's called a "PC Game", so maybe it'll launch later for consoles.

This looks awesome, but I wonder which consoles?

Never played a TRPG though, is it different from an SRPG? A quick google makes the two seem awfully similar.

Actually, going by a blog post that says Novectacle was formed out of a tabletop RPG community, "TRPG" might not mean "Tactical RPG" at all. It might be "Tabletop RPG".

I don't know if it's exactly what it means, but in Japan TRPG usually refers to tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons.

Oh geez, if the T actually does stand for tabletop RPG then that is definitely something new to me.

I have a Japanese copy of Fata Morgana on Vita, though I guess since MangaGamer did the English PC job the chances of an English console release are nil.

Loved Fata Morgana, so whatever they release next will be an instabuy. Hopefully it won't take long to come over. Music and premise sounds good.

I wonder if we see more western design influences (choices and consequences or skill checks for example) in the game design, since they are much closer to tabletop RPGs then JRPGs which tend to be story focused without a lot of player freedom.
I personally love both styles but i can't deny western RPGs are much closer to actually simulate tabletop RPGs.

I hope they do justice to Ixta as a non-gender binary character. I thought Fata Morgana handled gender issues pretty well (far better than any other Japanese game I've played), so I'm going to keep my hopes up :)

I think that if there's a developer I trust to do a non-binary character justice (Ixta's introduction tweet implied they're (xyr is?) binary) on this earth, it's Novectacle.

Edit: I'm not NB myself but me using Ixta as an avatar isn't offensive, is it?

I wouldn't be surprised to see it slip to 2020 at some point. It's pretty obvious development is still in early stages.

I'm nonbinary, and I don't see any issue with it, if that makes you feel better. I can't speak for everyone, of course.

Anyway, as a huge Fata Morgana fan I'm very excited for when this releases. I'm also in complete agreement with you; if Ixta is a NB character, I have complete faith that Novectacle will be able to write them well.

Huh?.. I could've sworn that it was saying 2018 someplace. I guess I was wrong. Apologies...

Edit: I feel really happy that Keika Hanada noticed this thread but really, really ashamed that I made such a big mistake. I'm very sorry everyone, I'm really not sure where I pulled that 2018 estimate from.

I'm kind of iffy on character designs but interested on what kind of story they'll tell. Fata Morgana was one of the greater experiences I had in gaming.

Edit: One thing I'm curious about: Will NarKarma tackle similar themes to Fata Morgana

So far I love the art style/ character designs and adore the song that plays on the website. Fata Morgana has sealed my fate as a Novectacle fan, it's going to be a looooong wait.

Also: there is currently no House in Fata Morgana thread (as far as I saw), so I will just mention it here: the translation pass of A Requiem for Innocence is 100% finished, now they are strictly in editing mode... (yay!)

Novectacle released an announcement reguarding NarKarma Engine A (they have to do a sort of "soft reboot"), and also that a new project is in the works (it is a big one), and more will be revealed about it in Spring.

So, kinda unfortunate news on one hand, but good on the other, since they've got another game in the works.

at this point I just wanna see something new out of them and don't care overly much what it is

Fata Morgana was one of my favorite things i've ever read and I just wanna see how they live up to it in whatever they do next
