Yay my copy has shown up!!!!

Ready to get my ATATATATATATATATATATATATA on >:D

Yeah he's amazing. He saved me soooooo much time on manually machine translating dialog in Ishin. His videos are so awesome that I can fully recommend everyone just going ahead and importing Ishin as with the KHHS guide + him for cutscenes you can fully experience the game as close to a full english release as possible. If you're like me and have your PS4 and PC hooked into the same screen it's super good because all one has to do is switch inputs to watch his YT vids during cutscenes then flip back immediately, as you can skip all cutscenes and dialog bubbles in Ishin anyways.

Ha, I actually did do that, because after I came across his videos, I immediately bought Kenzan and Ishin. I saw that KHHS had some videos too, but they didn't go past the earlier chapters, so finding this guy was awesome, as I prefer this format over sticking solely to a written guide. I have my PS4 and PC hooked up to the same monitor as well, so I'm either going to be switching inputs or just have youtube open on my laptop.

It's going to be an interesting experience, because even though I have imported beore, none of those games had much dialogue, if any at all. So depending on how well this goes, I might import Fist of the North Star afterwards, because you guys have gotten me hyped for it too, lol.

I love that you can turn on the death screams submitted by fans (I remember reading about the auditions), the name of the person even pops up

Its right up there for sure. Its certainly got the best final boss fight in the entire series (and I'm sticking with this opinion) gameplay wise. The story is cool because unlike Kenzan they have 5 games worth of characters to use in supporting roles, the gameplay is interesting thanks to the sword based combat and the story itself is very well done. Issues with it is that you really need to do everything as you go to level up loads, which lets you unlock all the cool moves (you don't need to do this, but I'd argue the game is less fun if you don't have the badass moves unlocked for the later fights), the completion list rivals 5 for longest in the game thanks to some truly bad grinding you need to do.
What the game gets right though (as usual) is the characters - Its not really spoiler but Okita (Majima) steals every scene he is in (big surprise) and the game has some awesome callbacks to previous characters that are used really well. The soundtrack features some brilliant remixes of past themes and the set pieces late in the game blow me away (the end game is just fantastic, its just a tour de force of what I love about the series - tons of long fights and cool boss battles).

Oh yes!

Ishin is my favorite game in the series. The gameplay is just sublime! 4 styles, all of them really unique and fun to use. The upgrade system in this game actually is the same from ishin, and it appears to have the same sort of upgrade parts/armor style thing going on too, along with Wanted Man side missions as well. The story might veer a little too nationalist for some, but I think that's the wrong message to take away from the game vs the theme of brotherhood and sacrifice for an ideal greater than oneself. The music is really, really good too and I'd say it's not just my favorite soundtracks in the series but also one of my favorite OSTs in any game. Basically every track is super memorable, with their own weird mix of classical Japanese type instruments along with heavy electrical guitar, hard rock style music.

Overall thus far I'd say Hokuto reminds me most of ishin vs the rest of the series, and that's awesome because Ishin is amazing.

While we're on the subject though, I'll say that that rep over on Gaf who said you'll need a "master's degree in Japanese studies" to understand the story is talking out of his ass. It's mostly just a well executed revenge plot with some fun subversive stuff thrown in for series fans due to the way the cast is set up. I mean if you can abstract the plot of something like Star Wars: Rouge One without having a "master's degree in Star Wars fandom" you'll be fine in Ishin. It's doubly such a weird answer for a potential localization because the game features in game lore dumps for the terms and time to help you get along if you don't get the world and such by pressing a button during cutscenes. Just localize those and people would be fine. It's just such a stupid answer in the context of what the game actually is that it's infuriating because of how awesome of a game it is. I mean I went in with only cursory knowledge of the history and got along just fine, so really I wouldn't worry about getting in over your head due to the historical aspect.

It's sort of like saying no one would get The Last Samurai as a movie because it's set during the timeframe it was. It's just absurd.

Finished the game. Did 78 out of 80 side stories and most of the side content in general. Do I have to continue doing bounties for the last two to show up?

Anyway, it was pretty good. It's just that I realized that the RGG formula and Fist of the North Star isn't as good of a combination as I first thought it would be. RGG is all about interesting characters and dramatic storylines and there is kind of none of that in this game. Because the manga is 27 Volumes of Ken making people explode and manly tears but not much more and you can't squeeze blood from a stone. They certainly tried, and as a result the world building is better than what you get in the manga (plus the whole mystery of the Sphere City is a semi-interesting storyline) but in the end it's mostly villain of the day fanservice stuff with half of Ken's lines being "Yuria!!!!!exclamationmark". And that's not exactly compelling.

I liked the battle system though. Felt more technical without the over-reliance on Heat moves. The talisman system however, is a complete waste. Most of them seem to be utterly useless without upgrading (5 seconds of slightly increased attack power with a 30 min cooldown, wow feel the power) but upgrading them is an immense pain in the ass. So I mostly just ignored them. The tank refill one saved my ass once but that's it.

So all in all, I liked it, it's still a RGG game after all. Also, the barkeeper minigame probably reduced the life span of my Dualshock by half. "You're already drunk" is a pretty good name for a cocktail though.

Sooo, is this a full-fledged Fist of the North Star game, or is it just a reskined Yakuza game?

I'm still confused as to what this game is supposed to be and I won't purchase it unless I know for sure.

I'm wanting it to be a full-fledged Fist of the North Star game complete with backstory, a good narrative and a continuation of and/or retreading of the original narrative that is considered canon.

Thus far I'd say it's a mix.

It's an alternate telling of the plot that spins from the point Kenshiro beats Shin. It has a lot of unique Fist exlusive gameplay elements I think you'd like (especially judging by your avi), but if you don't like Y anyways I doubt you'd like it anyways. The entire amazing Hokuto no Ken gameplay package is wrapped in a Yakuza package, so if you hate Y anyways just bail.

Oh I don't hate the Yakuza games, I am just someone that's not ever played them and kind of watched elements of them over the years; but I've never been interested in playing them for whatever reason.

I am, however a *tremendous* Fist of the North Star fan and if this were a full-fledged FotNS game, in that it would encompass that world's entire aesthetic, I would buy it.

I guess I'm just wondering why the Yakuza team made this game in the first place if it's not a full-fledged Fist of the North Star game.

Damn I'm currently in Japan and I'm contemplating on purchasing this game. I enjoyed Y0 gameplay a lot. I'm a bit familiar with Hokuto no Ken. I have a friend who loves the series but I haven't jumped in yet. Not also good in Japanese.

What you guys think? Yay or nay?

Well in terms of the characters used, the aesthetic and the style of combat its very much a FOTNS game. I really liked the first Koei Warriors FOTNS game (even if it got a bit repetitive after a while retreading the same stories from different angles), I'm glad the Yakuza team did something a bit different, rather than just retreading the same ground yet again. Plus as a Yakuza fan, this is a huge breath of fresh air after so many pure Yakuza games released over the years. Its nice to have something similar in structure, but still very fresh/different in terms of combat and characters.

Any comment on the difficulty ? Hard is enough challenging ? I found the demo to be somewhat way too on the easy side (probably on normal). Thank in advance

Usually in most Yakuza games Normal is perfect as the battles raise in difficulty as you continue, usually boss battles towards the end of the game you're using healing items, etc to survive and come out the victor.

Does the Asian version actually have all Chinese text or is there a way to set Japanese text?
I usually pick up Japanese versions but may have easier local access to an Asian version to avoid shipping.my Japanese is much better than my Chinese :)

So I just ordered the "Fist Of The North Star" complete TV series on Blu-Ray; does anyone here have this that can tell me is it worth the $60 and how the picture and sound quality is?

I'm glad I pulled the trigger on this, shit is hilarious. It's fun placing the regular VO with their Hokuto no Ken counterparts.

I suck at countering tho

Thanks for the detailed review. Was really curious about the game, especially the story.

I wonder if team Yakuza will ever make something that's completely removed from the yakuza formula ever again... Binary Domain bombed but I loved it all the same.

Finally really digging into the game. I hit a brick wall of sorts due to google translate not liking the font at all (I sympathize, I'm having issues with kana+gana I already know anyways...), but the guide over on KHHS and Salty Yen's videos have saved me a bit there. Due to missing the gothic font I'll likely just be playing this piecemeal and following along the guide and SY's videos, but still really enjoying it. SY's videos are really fun too, as he has no other Fist of the North Star experience at all and getting to see otherwise bogstandard series tropes on display to a newcomer is pretty fun to see in real time. Even to an old fan though, watching enemies heads explode never gets old!

Honestly I dunno what I'm going to do about substories. I usually do about 90% of them in an average Y playthrough, but with the font it's going to be pretty hard. I haven't made a firm decision yet, but I'm probably going to drop the game for a bit once the game really opens up that way I don't just ruin the game for myself in the quest to thirst my own fanboy lust for ultraviolence.

I really hope they bring this over though, because the gameplay is so damned good! I haven't played enough of it to say with any degree of certainty, but I could easily see it rivaling Ishin here for best in the series once it's all said and done.

This is why we need more arcade style beat em up modes accessible anytime we want to mess around with the combat. I love getting engrossed in the story, but sometimes you just want to kick ass and for a long time.

Yakuza Kiwami 2 actually has a mode for this sort of thing. The enforcer missions have you fighting through smaller sections of Kamurocho and Sotenbori against a large number of enemies (think 3D Streets of Rage and you get the idea) with plenty of weapons littering the streets for lots of heat move opportunities. Some of them get pretty tough late in the mode, and there are tons of levels to play through. I really enjoyed the mode, gave me that quick action hit that I love so much in the series.

Yeah, its got some really cool missions. My favourite being one set in Kamurocho where you start off in the Poppo Mart just by Serena - you have a big brawl in the store (trashing it) before taking to the streets and fighting your way to the Poppo Mart located at the south exit of Pink Street where you fight a boss in the second Poppo Mart. Much destruction of property and several injured goons later your crowned the victor! And basically the other missions are like this - either replaying some of the long fights from story mode, or just exploring set routes and back alleys in the maps while fighting tons of goons.
The final couple of missions are really tough as well, as the particular bosses that are used are predictably OTT powerful!

Can you please check for a region code when it arrived?

Or is there any way to view us region blu rays on eu devices?

One thing I would like to know as well if anyone has it, does it have a country code lock? I know many anime titles latey from the us have an extra lock for Japanese players which is annoying. Would like to get it but want to make sure it will work on my Japanese Blu-ray players.

Still going through the game. So legendary! Already my favorite game of the year by far!

This is the exact kind of mode I wanted in Yakuza 6 when I played it last year. Glad to see it was at least put into Kiwami 2. Let's hope they add it and improve upon it in future games.

I recall seeing the Reveal & it was a perfect pairing of the anime + Yakuza engine.

My only criticism is, I would have liked the OT title to state "Fist of the North Star" as well.

I almost breezed by this nice OT.

Yes that's very they one at Amazon japan too. Looks like the Japanese reviews says it works on Japanese players which is good. I've avoided buying American anime Blu-ray disks due to the extra region protection which is very hard to find out which disks have it or not. Might have to get it now.
It's just amazing that all 152 episodes are packed onto only 3 Blu-Ray discs! The quality is awesome for SD, like really clear and tbh, I wouldn't want it in HD; for nostalgia sake ;)

Also, this is incredibly cool!!

I hope the US version has all the Japanese DLC [And then some!].

I sincerely hope it comes to the West also and with all the DLC, plus maybe more intact! I really hope they put Kenshiro's outfit from the series and the 1986 movie in the game, because they are just so iconic to me.

I'm sure given this game's popularity and high ratings that they will make a sequel - but who's left to fight - all the heavy-hitters and main opponents/antagonists are in this game!
