An end of an era. I remember when the first Toys 'R Us was opened here and it was awesome to check out all these US toys. It was expensive tho.

How will I buy Amiibo now? This really sucks for the employees though, I've found them to be pretty friendly. I used to browse mine every few months or so for yugioh cards, gaming related action figures for my desk and to look at the large LEGO sets I planned to buy once I "Made it". Sad to see it go.

Really sad to see this happen. I've loved TRU since I was a kid, getting those paper slip video games. Played my first N64 and PS1 demos there, which led me to buy both systems. Went there constantly on the hunt for '95 Star Wars figures, and was there at the Phantom Menace toy launch.

Still go there regularly with my wife and two young daughters, we did a surprising amount of Xmas shopping there this year. Took the kids there last weekend just in case we didn't make it out again before they closed, but we'll probably make one more trip. As a lifelong toy enthusiast this one stings, a lot more than KB toys did.

RIP Toys R Us. Has anyone posted a pic of the videogame aisle with all those tickets. That was always a rush to grab a ticket, pay, and have the guy in the small stock room hand you the game through a window. Felt like gold .
Just finished burning a gift card from my aunt online. I imagine it's not long before those become junk.

I was just there. Store was in great shape. Everything seemed to be firing on all cylinders. This sucks.

I'll never forget the paper ticket dispensers for videogames. When I was a kid, I imagined that back room where all the physical video games were would be heaven.

I remember using my birthday money to buy my first self-purchased video game, Super Mario Bros. 3. I also remember trying to win that Star Fox t-shirt they were giving away if you beat a certain score for some national tournament. They didn't have any though.

A trip to Toys R Us as a kid was like the greatest day ever. It was two hours away but whenever we were in the area and would stop in, it was a highlight.

I'm not about to sit here and pour one out for a brand, but man... My heart goes out to the thousands that'll be losing their jobs because of this. Hope everyone is able to land on their feet.

I stopped into a TRU yesterday, almost everything was at 20% off. Keep in mind this store isn't in liquidation yet. I didn't find any amiibos or World of Nintendo product worth buying.
I'll be stopping in during the last days of TRU to pick up any cool Nerf guns or Nintendo product at discount.

That sucks, but I'd be lying if the only real thing going through my mind right now isn't "When's the liquidation sale tho?"

Very sad news. TRU was a big part of my childhood. I'll never forget those paper ticket dispensers, lol.

I hope all of the employees are able to land on their feet from this.

I'm sure that Bain Capital (and Mitt Romney) and KKR (the infamous KKR of Barbarians at the Gate) made plenty of good money off of this.

Destroying companies for profit has always been good money for them. It's too bad that American corporate structure and law makes American corporations so vulnerable to this. This sort of shit would never happen in other developed countries where laws are much stricter about leveraged buyouts.
Came to say this, more or less. This whole thing was by design.

I went to Toys R Us today expecting to see all videogames 70% off.....no every Switch and PS4 game was still full price at $59.99.

I was hoping to make out like a bandit, but I guess that won't be happening. They can at least sell off their stock to consumers.

You only have yourselves to blame. Shame on all of you. You KNEW what would happen if you grew up but you did it anyway.

SHAME.

I'm guessing we won't see sales until next week. The store near me was one of the first wave of closures a month ago, and video games at best were 20% off with consoles and switch games being excluded from the clearance. I'll be checking the next few days to see if that changes. You'll probably have better luck when their online store starts knocking off the prices.

I'm not sure why everyone assumes that everything will be so cheap on first day of clearing inventory?

I feel like we need an OP edit on how these sales work...

Really sad for all the employees, vendors and landlords who are deeply affected by this. But I'm not sad myself. They entered many different countries recently, including mine, and they used every dirty tactic in the book to squeeze out local businesses. Including my family business. Won't go into details, but it was a shady set of events that made news several times. I sincerely hope they will disappear from this market too... and that the employees will get new jobs in a more ethically run business.

My fondest memories of TRU will always be Saturday morning Pokemon League events there when I was in late elementary/middle school. I had so much fun playing the card game against other kids my age and earning badges. In fact, I still have all of those badges tucked away. Every now and again I dig them out for a real nostalgia trip.

A store closing discount process is very different than a liquidation closing. Dont expect a decent discount until well after the store is comletley picked over of anything you want. Resellers are going to buy the bulk of the good stuff at a minimal discount. If you are waiting for 50%+ off you are going to see movie tie in DS games to pick from.

You're way too soon on this.

I don't think they've even announced the exact closing plans yet, other than it is happening.

Discounts will start at 10~20% off, and gradually increase until they close. High value, in-demand items like current game consoles and recent AAA games will likely be returned to their distributors and sold at full price elsewhere.

I went there a few days ago probably for the last time. I browsed the action figure aisle and was appalled to see how expensive the WWE toys are. A Kurt Angle figure that plays 3 seconds of his entrance theme was $19.99. Great memories there buying TMNT arcade game for the NES.

Good stuff won't even be around with the liquidation prices hit. It's always the shit they couldn't get rid of otherwise.

Pretty much if it's in demand and sells well, all the store does is sell the remaining inventory and does not order another shipment obviously. Liquidation is for crap no one wants that needs to sell quickly hence they give go into discount tiers mode until it's all gone/written off by the liquidation company.

My best toys r us memory was being blown away in 1996 (though I went throughout the 19080's) trying mario 64 on an n64 kiosk for the first time. I immediately went home and started drawing what i could remember of the controller to show my brother and sisters. And then trying to describe to them all the possibilities this could open up.

Did you even read the posts that responded to you before? Liquidation doesn't start at 50+%. It starts at 10 and then builds up every 2 weeks to a month. In Electronics' case, they either prepare to send the stock back to the companies, or they discount it at such a low percentage.

Nothing ethical about retail.

Just got back from the Toys R Us here, it was packed, was like a Black Friday sale. There were no signs or anything suggesting it's closure either. Guess people just heard the news and figured they had to go.

I went to one that was already closing from the previous round of downsizing and it's amazing how rapidly these places get strip-mined.
