I will never get these "buuuuh Halo, Gears, Forza. That's boring!" comments. Never. I feel like these comments only appear from people who don't actually care about the Xbox ecosystem at all and thus don't even own one - or never plan to do so.
These franchise are one of the reasons why I even own an Xbox. And so for many others. These three franchise are the main pillars for Xbox. They are pretty much always quality titles in budget, player counts and Metacritic. And moving forward these titles will be highlights for the Game Pass, pushing both that subscription as well as the GaaS approach, delivering more and more content updates for these titles.
Nintendo gets applause all the time they announce another Mario, Zelda or Pokemon. And I'm just as excited about the next Forza Horizon or Halo title. These games will be big - no matter what. If MS shows something Halo at this E3 - that's huge for me and a big part of the Xbox consumer base. So fuck yes, I hope we will see Halo/Gears/Forza at this E3. Again - I care for these games. I know I will get quality products with these pillars.
I agree they should have more on top of that. I think they know that, too. But having three huge franchise is not a bad thing like some people pretend it to be. It's a big plus.
Even if you don't agree, surely it's not exactly a mystery why MS gets shit for the reliance on 3 ageing franchises? 2 of them aren't even made by the original developers any more and the third is in an increasingly niche genre.
It's an ultra conservative strategy and they deserve criticism for it.
Sony otoh have taken real risks the last 5 years letting so many studios create new ips. It left them pretty short in terms of exclusives early in the generation. But it's the brave, long-sighted thing to do, and they're really reaping the rewards now.
Let's hope MS has learnt from them.
