As you may or may not know, Phil Spencer said "It would be cool for Banjo to be in Super Smash Bros". But is it actually realistic?

https://twitter.com/xboxp3/status/584023190692737024?lang=en

@PedroDarkinson I think it would be cool if Banjo was in the next SSB DLC. We've worked with Nintendo on Rare IP before, no issues.

Pros: Nintendo and Microsoft have a good relationship and have worked together before

Example: Rare working on GBA and DS games after the buyout, Donkey Kong 64 with the mini-game that Microsoft owns, Microsoft on Switch with crossplay with Xbox One, Master Cheif, Banjo Kazooie, etc DLC in Minecraft on Switch.

Negatives: Even though they have worked together, they are still competitors, I don't know if Nintendo would want to be promoting a character they have no chance of getting a new game for, for example, if a new Banjo got announced it wouldn't be coming to Switch.

What do you guys think? Was it just Phil Spencer teasing something that would never happen, or is there an actual chance of it happening?

I think MS would be up to licensing it for an N64 Classic.
I don't think Nintendo would be too interested in licensing it for Smash.
Banjo isn't too big anymore, and giving him a Smash push when the series would never be featured on a Nintendo system doesn't seem like the best idea.

I think Minecraft guy is more likely

Of course Phil Spencer would want Banjo in Smash. It's a huge franchise and it would be a great way to promote their IP. But I don't think Nintendo would go for it, especially since Microsoft would probably require them to pay for the license to use him and it would be literally advertising their competition.

Yes, it's a good way for people to get interested in Banjo again that doesn't require MS spending any money really. Have it in Smash and then work on a new game to ride off Smash doing well

Don't see why not. Even Minecraft on Switch has Master Chief and Banjo skins in the game. Both Nintendo and Microsoft promoted that. I don't think Nintendo is lying when they say they aren't concerned about what goes on in the world of Microsoft and SONY. They would have never agreed to cross play with XBOX users if they did. It's a possibility.

Microsoft have been flexible with Rare and Minecraft on Nintendo in the past. Banjo would have absolutely been in Melee if it weren't for the impending buyout. It's practically one of the only inclusions that can possibly top Cloud.

I 100% believe Banjo is on the table and if they allow him in Smash it could also be part of a deal to help get Rare games on an N64 Classic too.

Not really. Sakurai seems against western created characters too.

We can't even get more Donkey Kong characters in Smash for this reason.

Well, Minecraft and the Master Chief DLC are available in all platforms.

Considering Microsoft's weird behaviour with their IPs, anything could happen.

Classic design is reboot-tier bad

I feel like all Banjo really needed was an update similar to what Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong got.

You can say DK's old Rare render was pretty "ReBoot-tier bad" as well, but ultimately the design stuck around and was updated to look more natural all while still being true to the essence of the original render. It looks great in Tropical Freeze especially. Had Banjo stuck with Nintendo after the buyout, I'd imagine he would of been given a similar treatment and not the drastic stylistic change we saw with Nuts & Bolts.

I doubt that out of all the possible characters to include Nintendo would look at Banjo and think "The last game came out 10 years ago and nobody cares about the franchise any more, let's put them in Smash"

It's not impossible, but the character isn't relevant right now (like Bayonetta is), and isn't an all-time classic (like Pac-man is).

Cubic design is way better though.

Yeah, i see it happening. Who knows, it's the 20th anniversary of bear and bird and maybe MS has something up their sleeve.

If Nintendo sucks in their pride and Microsoft don't dick around with them, then yes.

At this point is rather have Yooka Laylee and or just be happy with Duck Hunt. The Banjo Kazooie I know is just a relic of the past.

Banjo, Joanna and Conker should be in, and I think there's a huge segment of Nintendo fans that would love this, so Nintendo definitely benefits, as well as MS.

And to add to that, MS should release Rares remastered Goldeneye on both Switch & Xbox, best way to sort out this age old issue.

People here act like designs can't be cleaned up or updated at all.

Smash does this to characters all the time.

Don't worry about how Banjo will look. Sakurai will make Banjo and Kazooie look good unlike those ugly ass models from Nuts and Bolts.

I do wish they'd try to revist that deal. I could see why Nintendo turned it down the first time: all they would of gotten was a dinky VC re-release of the original game, while Microsoft would of had the new and improved XBLA remake with online play. Now, both Switch and Xbone could have it. Alas.

I actually think it is. Microsoft seems like they're willing to play ball with Nintendo when it comes to their more kid friendly properties. For example Microsoft IP Minecraft skins being available on the Switch version and Viva Pinata 3DS. Not that I'd expect them to release a new Banjo game on the Switch, but a character cameo seems in the realm of possibility.

A lot of games from Rare Replay are games running on the xbox 360 emulator aka backwards compatibility. Won't happen.
It would have to be a drastically different Rare Replay that replaces the 5 360 titles + Ghoulies with new games, and the XBLA ports being emulated differently

So maybe,
Perfect Dark Zero = Diddy Kong Racing
Nuts and Bolts = Donkey Kong Country
Viva Pinata = DKC2
Trouble in Paradise = DKC3
Ghoulies = Star Fox Adventures

I might see it differently, but ultimately agree that it's now time, including Nintendo fans to get the full fat treatment, 1080/4k @60 FPS version of this classic. Sigh indeed. :/

Well, I don't think it's completely unrealistic.

Cloud never appeared on a Nintendo system before, but he still made an appearance in Super Smash Bros.

Under certain conditions, I think a Banjo-Kazooie appearance benefits both companies.

Microsoft gets free marketing for one of their IPs. And Nintendo's fans will be happy to see Banjo make a return appearance on a Nintendo system.

I could only see this happening if for some reason Microsoft started developing games for the switch like they did back in the day with the DS

Nintendo isn't going to pay royalties to Microsoft to use characters they can easily do without. Use some common sense people.

Unless Microsoft decides to offer them free of charge, which I doubt.

At this point even Crash Bandicoot seems likelier and crazy enough a better idea. Banjo would have been great in Melee but right now Banjo is too irrelevant unless going forward they treat Banjo as a multiplat IP similar to Minecraft.
