Little gripes here and there:

I can't remember the times it takes to create different artisan goods. The game could perhaps tell me from the main inventory menu, not Pierre's shop.

Same with which crops are one time yield, and which keep producing.

Gold or silver quality crop or = doesn't necessarily mean gold or silver product, I know this now of course.

Rearing animals is a tad confusing, the heart system I mean. I am getting produce regularly, from many livestock, so I was assuming things were optimal there.

If this sounds like minor gripes I should have worked already, it's because they are. My entire first few weeks were nothing fishing and mining (default layout) so a lot of the community bundle stuff I didn't worry about until winter/year 2, and I'm solely farming and milking animals in the second year.

I haven't even begun to worry about recipes and cooking yet, though I have upgraded my house to get a kitchen.

It doesn't work that way. For example, creating a bottle of oil has (at least) 3 different "speeds" depending on what you use to create the oil with.

Same with which crops are one time yield, and which keep producing.

The seed descriptions should tell you that, at least for the re-producing ones.

There is another system for improving the products, all the way to purple.

The heart system controls the quality of the what the animal produces. Some things are only produced/found above a certain heart level.

So, I am approximately 120h in the game, and did almost everything I wanted, except finishing the Community Center (I need just one more fish - Shad - to finish it, but I am currently on Winter and have to wait until it's Spring again to catch it or see if it shows up in the Traveling Cart). I also maximized the attributes that count to the Grandpa's Evaluation (I only received 2 candles in the first one, but since then earned 1 million gold, made friendships 8+ hearts, married Elliot, will have a baby, finished the Mines, fully upgraded the house etc). My question is: Should I wait until I finish the Community Center to be evaluated again?

Also, about friendships: It is worth to try to maximize everyone? And about the single characters (since I am already married).

I am also doing the Mr. Qi's quests, but they don't seem that exciting. I read that more quests are unlocked once you finish the Community Center, though.

In the Winter making money needs to be done in alternative ways, so your skills in mining and fishing may help you go through the season. I built a coop ASAP, so I had eggs to make mayonnaise in the Winter too.

If you unlocked the recipe for Winter Seeds, you can make them using foraged winter items (it's the only crop that grows on icy soil). If you manage to get an iridium bar, you can make an iridium sprinkler (it irrigates 24 plants at once) and use it to cultivate the Winter Seeds - you will have little work to do with the plants and can use your time to mine and fish while they grow.

Thanks, I'll try that. My hickens make Little to no eggs, not sure what I'm doing wrong, they have hay

You need to pet them every day so they lay eggs. You can't leave them outside the coop at night or in rainy weather (or Winter, when you also need to buy a heater), but this is solved by only closing the little door they use, every night before you go to sleep. I don't know if this is accurate, but I have the impression that if your farm also has grass and they stay outside during the day eating it they lay more eggs and the hay lasts longer (I think that they might be better fed this way).

Just bought this game (switch version), never played anything like it and it's not something I would normally play... but it's already got its hooks in me! It's nice to be able to go from a high adrenaline game to something as peaceful and relaxing as stardew valley!

I feel a bit lost though, and I am still very early in the game (about 10 days in)... maybe I'm just not used to a slower progression such as this.

A few noobish questions:

- Is there a way to "un-till" a square of land, sometimes I miss the square I am aiming at
- Is there a way to water crops faster, going into each square one by one is a bit sluggish
- Am I supposed to be selling my harvest each time or do I need to hold it, some have stars next to it and I've been hanging on to these because I am not sure what to do
- Speaking of selling things, I just put whatever I want to sell in that box next to my house, right? Is that the only way?
- Is it in my best interest to donate each mineral or keep them/sell them?
- I am low on gold, and have been dumping everything into seeds.... I actually have about 20 gold remaining and feel like I will never have enough to buy a new addition to my house or get a new backpack...etc (am i doing this wrong?)
- I noticed something in the settings called "auto-run" checking it doesnt seem to do anything for me... is there a way to sprint faster?
- Fishing is hard ( they always escape, am I supposed to follow the fish in the mini game to catch it?

Either way, I am very much enjoying the game, and have read many guides already but still have tons of questions!

A few noobish questions:

- Is there a way to "un-till" a square of land, sometimes I miss the square I am aiming at - they grow back pretty quick but i seem to think the pickaxe does this
- Is there a way to water crops faster, going into each square one by one is a bit sluggish - upgrade your watering can at the blacksmith for 5 bronze bars
- Am I supposed to be selling my harvest each time or do I need to hold it, some have stars next to it and I've been hanging on to these because I am not sure what to do - sell it all unless it's required in the community centre or requested from the shop
- Speaking of selling things, I just put whatever I want to sell in that box next to my house, right? Is that the only way? you can sell at the shop in the village for instant cash
- Is it in my best interest to donate each mineral or keep them/sell them? donate first, sell next time
- I am low on gold, and have been dumping everything into seeds.... I actually have about 20 gold remaining and feel like I will never have enough to buy a new addition to my house or get a new backpack...etc (am i doing this wrong?) get the backpack ASAP via the above selling everything method
- I noticed something in the settings called "auto-run" checking it doesnt seem to do anything for me... is there a way to sprint faster? no, this made no difference for me too, lazy port option i think.
- Fishing is hard ( they always escape, am I supposed to follow the fish in the mini game to catch it? keep trying, you'll level up and it'll make it much easier, just spend a day fishing and you'll be fine

Either way, I am very much enjoying the game, and have read many guides already but still have tons of questions!

See if this can help you (without spoiling the game haha)

- Use the pickaxe, it will ''un-till'' the square. I discovered this because lack of symmetry makes me nuts.
- You can upgrade your watering can to copper, it water 3 tiles at once. You can also make sprinklers if you have the recipe and the materials, or buy them from the Traveling Cart near Marnie's ranch.
- It is the easiest way. You can sell things directly to people who work with the material (crops to Pierre, gems and ores to Clint, fish to Willy, etc), but the price doesn't change.
-It depends on the mineral. Some are requested in quests, and completing the collection in the museum unlocks some things too. I used to keep one of each one just to be sure.
-While farming is a nice way to get gold, you can try to improve your gains fishing, mining, foraging, etc. I made a lot of gold foraging the beach at the beginning of the game. Tipo: Fix the broken wooden bridge on the beach, there is a lot of mollusks to collect there.
- Fishing is hard, but you can use some accessories like rods and other things that make the fish more secure (buy at Willy's).

Thanks for your reply, very helpful! Still reading all these guides I've found across reddit/youtube/various sites.

the game can be pretty overwhelming... in a good way. Plenty to do!

So, I've found the OT. Been playing for one month, I think, and I've loved it.

Almost done with year 1, I had a rough start but I think I've found a proper way to be profitable with mining and farming. I haven't done much fishing.

My only issue is that I find the marriage candidates too young, lol, I find Caroline or Robin much much attractive. I'm too old XD

Yet, I think I'll aim for Maru. :)

I had the same impression about some candidates! I went for the ones who lived alone, like Leah and Elliot that seemed a little older. Sam, Abigail, they are just teenagers haha
Maru is one of the nicest girls. Emily too.

Yeah. Leah seems like the best one, however I was checking the wiki and I kind of prefer robots over sculptures XD

I bought this on the Switch yesterday and played for about 2 hours. It feels a little overwhelming at first, and so far I've mostly been fishing, growing parsnips, and making small advances in the mines. Figuring out how to effectively build a fence took some doing as well but I got there in the end!

I love the graphical style to the game, and the soundtrack so far seems really chilled and relaxing.

It's definitely overwhelming at first but as I've said to people just go with the flow and you'll pick up what you need to do. If you really stress about something like "what's the point of this item?" Then check out the wiki but it's more fun to explore and figure out yourself.

I've had a casual glance at the wiki but am aiming to avoid using it as best as I can. Now that my first few hours have sunk in a little bit I feel more at ease with just chilling and pottering about as things progress.

I'm in Winter 2 right now and since I reached the bottom of the mine last winter it's been a bit more of a slog this year. Been trying to complete the museum, fish more, and decorate my house. I caught a Glacierfish today so I'm pretty stoked, but I also dug up 3 prehistoric handaxes and 2 chicken statues in the span of one calendar day so the museum might take a while...

Also, I have no idea what to do with all this space now that my house is upgraded!! I've been looking at others' houses for inspiration and I'm getting somewhere but man, it's hard. I think I'm gonna keep it like this for a while and come back to it later. Especially since I have to start thinking about my farm design for year 3...

This is how I went about it (or tried to go about it, I sneak peeks at the wiki now and then haha) and it's been awesome so far. 60+ hours in and I'm still stumbling upon secrets! It's definitely overwhelming at first but great later on when there's still a lot to sink your teeth into.

Finally capitulated to a Switch double-dip after shoving it to the back of my mind since October. The game doesn't tend to go on sale, I already got incredible bang for my buck on my saturated and somewhat exhausted 100-hour file on PC, and I've been feeling a persistent craving to start a new farm for days. In the absence of a fool-around, light-on-reflexes game like Animal Crossing, I realized that the sooner I pick this up, the more value I'll get out of it. I'm a little trepidatious about the controls but I'm eager to see what the early-game experience is like when I already know the ins and outs of the systems that await.

So that is how irresponsible life choices happen. Joja route, here I come.

I bought this game a while ago and am trying to get back into it. I didn't make it that far, the first time.

Is there a definitive guide that can walk me step-by-step through the first 5-10 days of the game while teaching me the basics? I'm not interested in min-max or get rich quick, I just don't have a ton of time to play, so I'm looking for a guide that can give me a good healthy overview while walking me through a good portion of the first season.

Damn, that house looks nice, mine is filled with chests, kegs and other stuff XD.

So, I have a couple of questions. Things like worms, quarry stones or forageable items if not pickeded up, will they remain there, or are they resetted at the next day? I wonder if I have to check every day for those spots, or I can skip a few days and have a better use of my time.

In the Switch version, when looking at your inventory can you check the Bundles icon?

Whats the best use for Ancient Seeds?

Do you sell your animals? I have 5 cows, 3 goats, 2 sheeps and 2 pigs; and 4 chickes, 4 ducks, two rabbits, one dino, and one black chicken. I've reached the max heart level for some, and I wonder if I should sell one hoping to fill that place with a better choice.

And I end up with Leah, she had some nice events and I decided to keep focusing on her. But, she invited me to her art show before an event, and I missed it. Will that event trigger again?

My entire farm is filled with torches because I needed light and I had them for free because of the Recycling Machine :v Btw if someone has a suggestion about another kind of light I could use on the farm, pls haha

I know that the Quarry stones don't reset, but every day new stones spawn randomly, both common stones, ores, and gems. So ideally you should mine the Quarry every day to prevent that a common stone blocks the place where a gem would spawn (on the other hand, once I left the Quarry intact almost one season and I found a Mystic Stone there, so).

I am using the Ancient Seeds in the Greenhouse and mainly use them for wine. Since they are kind of perennial I don't need to replant the Greenhouse all the time and they give me some nice revenue. But I also keep some space for Starfruit and if I want to plant something offseason (I needed beets offseason once and this made it possible).

I sold my cows when they were maximized and bought pigs to replace them because the cows seemed a lot more temperamental than the other animals and the truffles gave me more gold. You will lose some gold upfront, but it may be a good choice since you can gain more in the long run.

Cheers guys.

Yeah, the event triggered last night. It was funny because I already had the ten heart event so, Leah's ex showing in the scene was kind of odd.

I need to finish the Greenhouse asap.

Then, I may sell a cow or two, altough I do like that they give milk every day, and the sound of a milkless goat irritates me. Right now I don't really have much trouble with money, except for that day when I decided to buy trees XD, in this moment I think mostly about time consumption.

I was thinking about the same problem with light, and those torches I have around. You can walk over torches, right?

Yep, you can. The torches served me pretty well until now, but they aren't the nicest thing when it comes to farm design :/ My farm looks like a Hollywoodish satanic ritual is being celebrated every night :v

The sound of milkless goats and cows is the most annoying of the game indeed. I didn't sell my last cow only because it is brown and it is so cuute.

I can't wait to put a hat on my horse lol

Pigs are my fav aswell. If you turn them into oil you get even more value out of them.
Also you can buy recipes for better lighting, they need more resources but they look nice.

Another thing, is it possible to use diagonal chest or casks on the switch version? I've tried everything with no success.

I'm having a blast on my Switch farm, my first new file since my first farm on PC (that is, my second time establishing a farm). The hilltop layout has broken me out of the habit of packing everything into neat, regular grids, the same habit I get into with games like SimCity when there aren't any obstacles in the terrain I'm forced to play around. I'm surprised at how much of a difference the layout makes, and it's given me quite a lot of focus for planning dedicated zones like animal pens. A really natural extension of the town, too, whereas the standard layout is this vast expanse that makes it look as though whoever owns and operates it is the sole economic driver of the region, and everyone else is just there to provide a personalized service sector. (Which, to be fair, is still true.)

I've been taking a radically different approach this time, keeping my farm at a small and manageable size (easy to water, you see), rushing the mines to amass a huge supply of metal for tool upgrades and future machines, and clearing it to the bottom before I was halfway through the first summer. The first time I played this, I focused so much on the farm and on hitting a bit of every task to fill the community centre that I think I didn't clear the mines until winter. This has been the opposite experience: since I know what the game has to offer already, I don't feel the need to play for breadth or even immediately for wealth. Instead I'm doing the equivalent of rushing tech, and I'm eager to see how well it pays off, compared to the typical first-year experience where the mechanics/achievements/community centre goad you into dabbling in a small slice of everything.

So ... what the fuck do I do in this game?

It's been 5 days and I'm kind of lost. I'm just randomly cutting sticks in front of my house. Am I supposed to cut the small trees and grass I can't walk over as well? I explore town and I'm not getting much from anyone, characters sometimes just say something once and then ignore me. Went into houses, hung out at the bar. Got the fishing rod the old guy closer to the beach. Someone mentioned going into the caves when it rains, but I can't find them. I want to get into this, but I'm having a hard time latching onto a goal. Closest I've played to this was Animal Crossing, and that game's loop was essentially just pay for shit and making money so you can buy different things and figuring out more ways to make money over and over again. I haven't found Stardew Valley's loop.

So ... what the fuck do I do in this game?

One thing you probably want to do is to clear the area in front of the house, so you can farm there and place more buildings. Also, make sure to buy a bigger backpack (from the shop) as soon as possible.

The game loop is to do stuff of your own choice during the day (mining, farming, fishing, collecting, socializing, etc) and then sell the stuff you don't need at the end of the day (put the stuff to sell in the big box at the right side of the house). Make sure to upgrade the tools you use the most, and to investigate the community centre.

The primary/first cave is in the north east direction.

already kind of answered you in your OP but at day 5 really i was just going to the shop, buying crops, planting and watering them, then repeating to earn money.

I've found it's worth spending some time fishing as that can generate some decent income early on to spend on seeds and upgrades.

I HAVE FOUND THE SECRET!!! I now have FOUR chickens making eggs, and I make mayonnaise every day, and with my regular crops I am rolling in cash!!!

I am at level 60 in the mines after maybe 8 hours of play or so. I haven't really tackled the social aspect. Total gross income of 50k so far. I AM SO MAD I wasted so much iron on stupid sprinklers only to get the recipe for quality sprinklers like right after.

Yeah, regular sprinklers are garbage and I have no idea why they exist, even Quality Sprinklers have some use after you get Iridium but I can't imagine ever wanting to water just 4 plots like that.

Also, chickens are okay (I get tired making mayonnaise every day, and the different size/color of eggs taking up inventory slots is annoying), cows, goats and sheep are too much trouble (gotta pet em AND milk / sheer 'em with their own special tool?! Ain't nobody got time for that.), but pigs are where it's at. Feed 'em, love 'em, get your truffles and sell 'em without having to do anything with them (even with the Artisan profession truffle oil is only like 200g more, easier to just sell 'em raw). Last time I played I got rid of all but one chicken (kept the duck and rabbit though) and all but one cow / goat / sheep for when I might later need their stuff later, and I put my money in low-maintenance pork.

Edit: Oh, I kept a void chicken too, I was afraid I'd make it angry and it'd burn down my farm if I got rid of it.

Married Leah, sorry Maru but your father was giving me a funny look. And we are going to have a kid!

I got the Greenhouse, now I'm only need a Sandfish, a Tilapia, three apples and a pomegranate to finish all bundles. I think I'll manage to do them all before year's end. I was reading about fruit trees layouts, and that you can't get to some in the Switch version, so I went to a more conservative one, and coincidentally a more symmetrical one (3 of every kind).

Got the sewer's key.

I don't know, but it felt really good getting all those things done. I love this game.

I've yet to have a better farm design. Then, I think I'll be done.
