It's completely possible they still are (re)negotiating the deals with 3rd parties. Metroid Prime 4 also is "©2018 Nintendo" even if it is being done by an external studio that should be credited too. I'm also not sure how the copyright situation works if the name is probably getting changed.
The point of that image isn't at all "who's making it".
It's comparing the dates that are shown on the copyright for known re-releases with the date for SSB. The re-releases show the original year to 2018. Smash just shows 2018, like new releases do.

who expected the game in 2018?
...Everyone.

Or to be announced in a Direct at the start of the year?
Not everyone but a lot of people.

Also, Breath of the Wild Link.
I also believe it to be a new title but BotW Link isn't proof of that as that could be an added costume.

I was referring to the 3rd party DLC discussion, not the new game/port discussion, with the copyright comments, sorry :)

For characters do we think we will see rex and pyra together as one character as some sort of hybrid of roselina and luma plus shulks blade arts, see them as two individual characters, see rex have different blades for different smash attacks, or blade arts like shulk or not see them at all?

Daisy and Waluigi. That's all I need.

Or maybe Chain Chomp with a tennis racket in Smash

I first assumed it was a port, but then I realized: there was always going to be a new Smash game for the Switch as there's been one for every home console since the Nintendo 64. So betting on it being new isn't too ridiculous of an idea. This could've easily been something they've been working on since Smash 4 released. Yeah, the Switch is getting quite a few WiiU titles and that makes us suspicious, but Smash won't be one of them. It's just too big a franchise to say "here's a 4 year old game with some new stages and characters."

I thought when announced it was a port. Now I'm not 100% sure. But I think it's crazy that there's been no clarification one way or another. If it's a new version this has to be the least clear new entry in a franchise that I can think of.

The only reason people think it's a port is because there was a rumoured port. The way it was presented was as a whole new entry, otherwise there would not be a working title. If someone hasn't been following the rumours, I don't think anyone would be assuming this was anything but a brand new game.

It probably is like Splatoon 2 where most of the old codebase has been re-used, but that's modern game development. It will be marketed as a new entry based on how they showed it so they better have the content to back it up and I think they will.

And they fact Nintendo has made no clarification that I've seen

That trailer could have added "Brand new entry" in it but they didn't

Why would they need to of those rumours never existed? It has a different title, it has never before seen characters in the very first reveal. What was on there that would make you think it was a port?

If they come out later and say this is a port, then I will write this off as a Watch_dogs level bait and switch reveal. Probably more so since Ubi probably had faith the game could look like that, whereas Nintendo know how they've revealed this game.

I think it's a port becsuse 1: it's a quick turn around for a smash game, 2: sakurais hands barely function anymore so a port would make the most sense. 3: nintendo has already shown thqt they will port anything amd everything they can to the switch.

At this point, if it were a port I think they'd have told us that straight up. I think quick turnaround is probably due to using the same engine.

But if that's the case, why not release this "quick port" during the first year of the Switch? It certainly would boost sales more than Pokken DX.

Is four years really a quick turnaround, though?
Considering how big the roster (probably) is, I'd say yes.

But if they're reusing the core of the game, I agree with you -- it's plenty of time to make an iterative sequel. (It would be the first time smash has had an iterative sequel)

I think all signs point to it being a Splatoon 2 (or Madden or Mario Galaxy 2 or Forza or ...) style, iterative sequel, vs something built from the ground up or a simple port. And that seems reasonable to me. It's the only sustainable way to do it.

E: note: I don't know if there's an industry standard term for this rather than me throwing out "iterative sequel" like that's a thing people should know about -- if there is, somebody let me know.

7 years between Melee and Brawl. 6 years between Brawl and Smash 4. So kind of. And that's not counting DLC for Smash 4 either.

I think tempering expectations, which the internet often doesn't want to do, is the best course of action.
Saying 7 years between Melee and Brawl is a bit of a stretch. Melee was out in Dec 2001 - Brawl was Jan 2008. Also, wasn't Brawl famously announced before anyone was even working on it? It wasn't like they just started development directly after Melee. Then there was a lot that had to go into putting that team together. Likewise, they were essentially building two games for 3DS and Wii U. I don't doubt it being similar situation to Splatoon 2 in some ways since Smash doesn't need a major engine overhaul, but I think in practical terms, it's not that different than previous dev cycles.

  1. The dev cycles are considerably shorter than the amount of time we have to wait for the next installment. Brawl was in development only for about two and a quarter years. Likewise, SSB4's dev time was about 2.5 years for the 3DS version, and a couple months more for the Wii U version. Also worth considering when thinking about how long it took between entries is that after Brawl came out, for example, Nintendo's next system was still almost 5 years away.
  2. I know Sakurai likes to test his own games, but this still seems pretty irrelevant. He doesn't have to balance everything by himself.
  3. A Splatoon port rumour came along the with the rumour about a Smash 4 port. We got Splatoon 2.

Almost missed Don. Was like "where's Don?" And I almost asked you all where Don was. And then I found Don. Good Don.
Thank you for this. I was gonna ask the same thing. But now that you've confirmed he's there, I see him too.
It's a storage closet as far as I remember. Jones showed it once on Cup of Jones if I remember correctly (because people kept asking about it (which is understandable)).
You're right! I had only caught the tail end of the stream, but I went back to see what I missed and halfway through, Brandon talks a lot about it. Apparently the closet has 85% Easy Allies stuff and 15% Jones stuff.

I think Smash for Switch will be far closer to the sequel end of the Port -> Enhanced Port -> Sequel spectrum, but still a port nonetheless.

Every single bit of copy from Nintendo regarding Smash on Switch makes sure not to use the words "new entry" etc.

Honestly, I kind of want Smash Switch to be the Wii U and 3DS games with new stuff.

If it's not officially that, I hope it has all of the 3DS stages in HD at least.

That doesn't make any sense. "Port" doesn't mean sharing some of the same assets. Otherwise almost every sequel ever made is a port.

Port: Hyrule Warriors
Enhanced Port: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Sequel: Splatoon 2

I think Smash is gonna be the Wii U version, fundamentally, which only make sense given the Switch's graphical capabilities, with enough new characters etc to make it feel like a sequel.

So the same engine? Or like you boot up the game and it's the exact same opening cinematic, menu, modes etc - just with some extra content added on top?

I think it will be a sequel with the same engine, just like Majora's Mask, Uncharted 3, Modern Warfare 2, Mega Man 2, etc

Same engine, new logo, title (Blitz for example), music, presentation etc, but fundamentally the Wii U game. New characters and more contemporary skins for returning ones (BOTW Link). Or at least this is what I'm hoping for, the language and the deliberate avoidance of Nintendo saying "a new entry in the smash bros franchise", has me concerned.

Been traveling for work and missed a month's worth of #content. Lots of catching up to do.
  • Mario Party tournament was terrible. They could've at least used the actual tournament mode in the game to minimize the randomness and not just play the party mode and call it a tournament.
  • As much as I love the design challenges they stress me out too much, I had to close it. The silent judge should really utilize chat to help them with the interface and controls (at least this time the judge hasn't spent hours in the game). Also the passing the controller around is stupid, when the time is limited like this you should just have one person control it and his teammates relaying their ideas through him.
Oh and I finally played Yakuza Kiwami and hated disliked everything about it. The original stuff didn't age well, most of the additions were misguided, and it didn't have any of the things I loved about 0. I planned to wait for Kiwami 2 before 6 but now I don't think I even want to play Kiwami 2.

It's just so awesome how much better their new group streams look compared to how it used to look. Incredible improvement.

Old (this isn't completely accurate as there wasn't really a standard UI for streams, but it never looked a huge amount better than this):

This kind of thing is very important to me, so I really thank whoever was in charge of getting this look going. Truly looks so much more professional.
I don't like using the game's box art for the entire empty space, makes it too cluttered. I'd rather have black background (EZA colors) with a smaller box art.
