In the weak and the wounded
What does that even mean?
Netflix has a lot of high quality TV Shows, but this is not one of them. There are german productions I like a lot, i.e. The Lives of Others, Der Untergang, Das Experiment (movies, but german productions nonetheless) but this doesn't look compelling at all.
Don't like the colors, acting seems serviceable at best, unraveling of the mystery looks cheap judging by the trailer.

I am interested in this after watching the first episode, and this is really one of the main things in my way, although I think its mainly because the vo actors arent really selling it to me. Is there a way to watch it in German audio with english subtitles through netflix (like a menu option somewhere?)

Of course you can. You can combine whatever audio and subs you like. Click on the icon at the bottom right.

I really didn't think I'd get quoted again in this thread.
General impression by critics and viewers seems to be much better than I thought tbh. Maybe I'll give it a fair chance sometime down the road, but that trailer didn't do the trick at all for me...

Trailer does the show a big disservice because it's completely uninteresting and not reflective of the actual show.

In retrospect this is a good thing, because it doesn't spoil anything. But as a means to get people interested it fails.

I don't know, the trailer had me really interested from the get go. Otherwise I'd probably not have checked the show out at all. Different strokes, though.

Just finished this. General reaction:

BT8qRIt.jpg

I don't know if it matters but I've never seen Twin Peaks so I probably don't totally understand the inspirations. I've read that it's supposed to be sort of an antithesis to Twin Peaks. In any case, I guess some people are saying the trailers and initial marketing kind of messed up people's expectations? They made it seem like the time travel is what everything was alluding to and that was going to be the twist, but I like that the time travel itself was revealed early on and wasn't treated like a big mystery. What enhances it is the small town feeling and the years of interwoven relationships that come with that. In towns like that where everybody knows everybody, a lot of skeletons end up in peoples' closets over the decades, and time travel just makes that shit exponentially more complicated. I admit I did have some trouble keeping up with everybody. I got spoiled a little bit when I tried to google the characters to keep track of who was related to who.

Edit: I'd kinda always wanted for someone to take the basic concept behind Shadow of Destiny (Shadow of Memories in Europe) and turn it into a movie or something. Dark is pretty much that -- major plot twists resulting from time travel in a small German town.

Happy to see Season 2 being teased, the show seems to be caught between what the 'production team' want us to be thinking post-Episode 10 (all these questions!) and the Netflix overlord bean-counters saying 'you can be ambiguous, but you have to give the audience SOMETHING to tide them over.'

Is there like, a list or something, of questions/clearly unresolved events that are likely going to be resolved. I think a great deal of these established 'we're putting this here but will expand on it later' threads will likely be discarded ie each and every missing child has been accounted for but it's still the 2019 Winden's largest concern, collectively. We the audience know what's happened but there's no closure because the characters are none the wiser.

Girlfriend and I wrapped this up a week ago and both loved it. Interested to see what the deal is with German Randall Flagg (he is a bad, bad man) and where they go from here. The scene where current Jonas is talking to future Jonas in the creepy 80s kids room was great. Also, Ulrich is the absolute worst person to have travel through time. He steps on every butterfly. And yeah, the scene where he attacks young Helge was pretty shocking.

Honestly one of the most impressive things is the casting of the actors for young and old versions of characters. They did such a good job. Must have taken forever.

Just finished the show and I absolutely loved it. It appealed to my sensibilities in nearly every way.

Beautiful cinematography and music too.

I still don't understand why Mikkel had to kill himself. His death doesn't affect young Mikkel going into the cave.

I still don't understand why Mikkel had to kill himself. His death doesn't affect young Mikkel going into the cave.

Because he was a man who was sent to the past as a little child, fighting with himself for decades to come to term with seeing his father and mother be teenage jerks, fall in love and give birth to him. Because when the time of his own disappearance came, he was torn to pieces not knowing whether he could prevent it... or whether that would erase his very own existance. And in the end, he just couldn't bear the thoughts any longer, and they drove him to commit suicide. Maybe he had planned to for a while, but wanted to let his family know his story. Only, if told too soon, they would have prevented Mikkel's kidnapping, potentially erasing their entire family out of history.

It's not that he had to kill himself, he just really didn't want to live anymore.

Finished. As a German speaking person, I think the cast was terrible, or most of them. But I do think the connection between all characters is so damn good created.
I don't think I Have understood nearly everything but it was very impressive. The first three episodes were little bit strange and boring but it impressed my after the second half.

I have still many questions but I really enjoyed the show and can't wait for season 2!

I guess I should check out some YT videos for 100% clarification.

Oh man, I just finished this and thought I did a pretty good job of grasping everything while I watching it. However now I think back, there was a lot of unexplained shit.

Spoilers, obviously. If you've not seen it yet give it a chance!

Like, was the 3 way time gate always there? The door looks a lot older than 86. Jonas talks about creating a new hole, but Noah seems to contradict that. And once it has been created, it always exists from that point onwards? So from 53 it was always there because it was created in 86.

And why was Noah killing the kids? There is talk about it being a prototype time machine, but surely he already knows about the portal that has existed from 53? Those kids ended up travelling in time shortly after dying so something is up. I suspect he was just trying to set the wheels in motion and he knew it was never going to work. And he's a dick.

Then there's the part in the last episode where the window opens between the bunker in 53/86. From what I can tell young Helge ends up in 86 and Jonas in...2052? Or a version of 2019 that's completely fucked up? If it is the former then has the 3 way gate shifted?

Or are there now two distinct methods of time travel?

Also, I didn't realise until I looked at IMDb but Ulrich had been time travelling on Netflix already...

as Hitler in Look Who's Back *mind blown*

I think it's 2052. If there's a second season, I'm interested in seeing how kid Helge ends up back in 53. We know he makes it back there because we see him as a middle-aged man in 86. He lived a full life from 53 onward.

Yeah good point, I didn't think about that. There must be a way to get back to 53. So maybe Jonas in activating the device only succeeded in opening up at least one more 33 year portal? Good going, Jonas!

Speaking of Jonas, his dad/aunt/grand mother speech in the last episode was almost comic levels of ridiculousness.

God damn. Just finished the show. Really dug it. I just wish they answered more in S1 for it to be a little more closed (mostly the impetus of Claudia and Noah), but it's satisfies with the conclusion.

Noah finds young Helge in the 80s after realizing Jonas is gone, and sends him back thru to 53 via the tunnel. This starts the Noah/Helge relationship, in doing so Noah likely promises Helge he can alter the past if he helps him.

My take, anyway.

This is absolutely how it goes. I don't mean to be an ass, but the show very clearly put that out there. Helge is later on employed by his father that owns the power plant, meaning he returned to the past.

Dark has nothing in common with Stranger Things, dunno why people keep mentioning these two in the same context.

Kid goes missing in a small town that's next to a sketchy government installation.

Beyond that base premise they aren't alike, but mentioning a famous show is a good way to get people interested in a lesser known one.

As I said, that was the intent. I want people to get into this show, because it is really good. Amongst the best of Netflix Originals.

I wanted to make an LTTP thread but decided to search for the OT instead, but I was definitely going to put "Stranger Things" somewhere in the title. Because there are some superficial similarities and it helps to attach a name that is well known because I honestly think that Dark is an awful name for the show and way too generic. It doesn't stand out from the sea of other shows at all. So, saying that it has some similarities with "Stranger Things" (that's a much better name already) helps a bit.
"Dark"... it really is a bad name. It doesn't give anything away at least but my wife didn't want to watch it at first because she thought (and I thought too) that it was a basic drama/thriller show with a bit of horror.

Anyway, we just finished season 1 and we liked it a lot (she loves time travel stories), even though we had to talk often to help each other keep track of all the characters.
Some great choice of music too but I often thought it was overbearing (not sure if it's the right word). Like, a way too dramatic violin even for some very common scenes. It's too loud and a bit overused imo. But I did like the music a lot and the song selection.

I can't wait for season 2. I hope we don't spend too much time (heh) in
2052
because the setting looks kinda boring and uninspired, from the little we've seen. I feel like I've seen this a million times. But I guess it'll all come down to the characters.

Oh, and Ulrich is a total moron. My god, I thought he was gonna be cool, but what an idiot. He's a failure on every level, it's almost funny when you take the things he doesn't know into consideration.
Alright I'm cheating on my wife, but not only that, I'm cheating with the girl that accused me of rape and put me in jail for a while. I despised a cop when I was a kid and decided to become a cop too to be better than him but I'm actually worse. A dead kid appears from nowhere and it takes me almost a week to realize it's my long lost brother that I always look at on pictures everyday. Okay now I'm in the past I'm gonna make everything right. I'm gonna kill this kid with a rock and go home, that will go well. Wait where's my damn phone?

I just finished and loved this.

Question: Why does old Jonas prevent young Jonas from taking Mikkel back to 2019 in the beginning? If he wanted things to end, he could have let it happen, no? Is it just to save himself from disappearing?

EDIT: Also, Noah = Bartosz?
They look similar.

It's either to ensure that he exists or it's because on this show everything is predestined. No one has ever changed the past-it's always happened as it was meant to happen.

Thanks.

Also, I'm not sure about Claudia. Why was she urging the men to put Mads where he is meant to be found?
I think she is aware of things and still chooses to preserve continuity. But then, what is Noah after? Hm...

Can't wait for S2. Also, superb music. I think I heard the lady from the knife singing one of the songs. I'll look for the song list later.

I feel the same, but I'd rather the supposed 'lack' of constant drip-fed updates like some English-speaking series I could mention. They should keep things under wraps during filming!

Well, then some news for you:
Filming was supposed to start on the 25th of June. And I haven't heard anything about it starting later, so they should be doing it right about now.

Just finished watching season 1 after putting it off for far too long. I really like the concept of time travel, and Dark's take on the genre was great. Watching every piece of the puzzle come together to ensure that it was all a closed time loop felt really satisfying, and yet there are still enough mysteries left for more seasons. I'm a bit disappointed that they heavily implied that Jonas will only be a pawn at the end, since it felt like he was one of very few truly sympathetic characters in the show, and I'm less interested in watching his future struggles since I know what they'll lead up to. I have to say though that the actor who plays him in 2019 is remarkably pretty. I can't put my finger on what, but there's just something about his face that feels almost otherworldly.

I watched this over the last week, and it was great!

I had hoped that the finale would offer more of a resolution to the arc of the season, but instead nothing really got resolved and it just cracked things open even wider. I guess I wanted a season finale more like Stranger Things (resolved the current story arc, kept things open for future stories), and instead it felt like a Lost finale (dramatic things happened, mythology of the show expanded). That said, it's great to know season 2 is already in production. I can't wait.

I would love recommendations of similar shows if anyone has any in mind.
