Actually it does not look like that.

JaJUIYe.gif

The upscaling method they used completely destroyed what the tiles are supposed to look like next to each other. It looks totally fucked. A mess.

And what's with the colors.

So it looks like it requires quite a decent effort to upscale the game for higher resolution because of how the original sprites look ... but they chose the cheapest way anyway.

Why are the colors different (and closer to the original) with those 2 tiles?

There are issues in the original tiling that are essentially invisible due to the original game's resolution and styling. Even if you play the original SNES game on a modern HDTV, you're not going to see such distracting squares everywhere. The issue is that Square-Enix added a unnecessary filter to the game that exacerbates what were basically invisible, minor flaws in the original. They are still accountable for that decision.
Yup.
By filtering the original tiles they ruined the feeling of continuity of the art.
Now that filter has created directionality and slopes in areas which previously had none, details cannot smoothly go from tile to another.

If such filters are used it should be done in a way that allows them to blend with neighboring tiles. (Not easy task.)
I wonder if simply turning maps to bitmaps and use filter/overdraw would have been the best way to do this. (If one really needs to touch the backgrounds.)

Also, always have option to use original art.

It's nice to know that SE has learned absolutely nothing from their poorly received Steam releases of FFV and FFVI.

...Oh wait, no it's not.

Man, we really need the 16-bit JRPG equivalent of Christian Whitehead to get officially taken on to fix these releases :(

it's embarassing how shockingly cheap and cynical they are, such an exploitative and disrespectful use of the company's lineage

It's like when Tabby said that he got the headcrab hat from the Half-Life team, as if something like that exists. :p

I was about to request a refund today. Hmm what to do..
There is a lot they have to fix to make this an acceptable port. Realistically they will not do that. We could end up getting a much better version eventually, but if you really want them to take notice I would suggest going through with that refund and getting it at a much lower price during a sale.

I'd say the chances of Squeenix actually fixing this release is about the same as:
  • Near a Tomato getting a proper PC patch.
  • NISA releasing PC version of Ys VIII.
  • Microsoft closing down their app store.
  • Konami getting back into video game industry.

Yep, loaded with no issues. Then, I realized it was a modified version of crt-geom, which is already one of my favourite CRT shaders. Thanks again!

Pop on over to the CRT Shaders thread with those screenshots! https://www.resetera.com/threads/crt-shaders-scanlines-ot-because-1080p-is-all-the-ps-i-got.7235/
You're welcome! Yeah, it's a customized version of a handful of shaders thrown together and I like it a lot so far.
Haha, thanks! I might post some in the next few days. :)

Hmm. Well, at least the team responsible for this is aware there's a problem. Of course, they didn't guarantee a fix was in the works, but rather they're "assessing" what can be done. More than they ever did for Nier Automata PC. (Not the highest bar, I know.)

Oh please. The only assessing they're doing is how much lipservice is required to get more people to buy in thinking it'll get fixed.

This is the company that still hasn't fixed FFVII on PS4 after like 3 years. I'm not expecting much.

No it runs fine on every platform. It recognizes controller through native steam support where you can remap everything but a lot of ppl didn't know about this feature and got angry instead.

Not to say it was perfect, I think the UI is a step down, but it's a great port that tries to keep the original feeling of the game

I love RS2, but the port itself got some unintuitive input control (in shop and warehouse) and most noticeable input lag, aside from the mobile UI you mentioned (which they patched already).
I think RS2 is just a barebone port from mobile and it didn't have anything close to high budget.
However, it's true compared to this Chrono Trigger's port, RS2 looks like a master class port.
SE just doesn't care about anything not named FF or KH.

Some early game screenshots in 1920x1440 of what should've been:

The PC version could've been the definitive version of CT, but instead, we have this... thing which isn't really worth anything.

It's missing some sweet retro filters. Game isnt meant to be blown up in full hd naked. :x

Speaking of which, is the horror on PC caused by a filter running, or did they filter the assets themselves ?

I love that even the achievement icons use filtered sprites. And that the shitty quality anime videos in this version are apparently ripped straight from the PSX version, except they're cropped to make them appear widescreen, while the release trailer clearly shows they still have access to the original videos in higher quality. The amount of incompetence and sheer malice towards the game here is just incredible.

Any time I hear "we are listening" I assume they aren't gonna do anything. These words mean nothing.
Yeah, I imagine that they just want to give false hope in order to get people to buy the game or give up on refunding and then just wait it out until everyones just moved on. Of course, I'd be happy to be proven otherwise.

I'm screaming.

The cutscenes quality isn't close to what's in the trailer ?

What the actual fuck man

Just a reminder: Square Enix posted a similar statement days after the launch of NieR: Automata. They never mentioned anything again after that.

Also, I came across this today. I thought it was a pretty good write up: https://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/Lar...make_the_Right_Way_Chrono_Trigger_Edition.php

Thanks for sharing that article (and thanks Lars for the write-up!) really informative stuff. I hadn't payed much attention to all the different version of the classic 16bit Squaresoft RPGs so had no idea at all the complications some of these ports have had. Though damn, that FFIV PSP port looks sweet.

Actually, I'm probably mistaken on that, sorry. I saw some people discussing this on Steam forums at some point, but looking at the gameplay videos on Steam, the anime cutscenes don't seem too bad. Definitely better than on PSX, at least.
