On top of this, I actually have one less way to play as of today. It seems with Square rolling out an update to the Android version of the game has broken compatibility with my Google Pixel, slightly unrelated - but it's almost like a sign to me saying don't play the Mobile version (or ports of the Mobile version in this case).

On another note, I'm the proud owner of the game for DS as of today now as well. Although I really wish there was a way to play the DS game on a console (ala GameBoy Player / Super GameBoy) or that it came to Wii U VC as a DS title. Seems like SNES version may be what would fit my preference the most, but my god that price...

Just wanted to follow up that it appears that Square has fixed the Android version, as it now lets me download and install it again on my Google Pixel. Tried it this morning successfully.

The SNES version looks better than that. Embarassing.

That's the thing. There is a producer out there who champions to release good versions of his games. Not only that but RS2 was released on most platforms in the same day. And I think it looks damn nice. They used the "don't fix what ain't broke" as an adage and it is clear there were no reason to touch up the sprites only to scale them (or for some bosses animate them)

These are great, but it's kinda funny how enemy sprites looked so huge and awesome and our characters are so tiny and cute.

It looks good but wasn't that port received quite negatively as well?

No it runs fine on every platform. It recognizes controller through native steam support where you can remap everything but a lot of ppl didn't know about this feature and got angry instead.

Not to say it was perfect, I think the UI is a step down, but it's a great port that tries to keep the original feeling of the game

I know i said i don't give to fucks about the filter but after seeing some of these screenshots I am not so sure. I have to think that there is a bug causing some of these problems because I refuse to believe someone at Square-Enix considers some these pics an improvement.

Still I am confident one way or the other this will be fixed, so am still planning to buy the game eventually.

That's what it looked like in the original game. You can the area in question ithere on this map.

They just upscaled the original tilesets rather than redraw them from scratch (which would have cost them a lot more money...)

Actually it does not look like that.

JaJUIYe.gif

The upscaling method they used completely destroyed what the tiles are supposed to look like next to each other. It looks totally fucked. A mess.

And what's with the colors.

Looks awful, not gonna pay $20 for this although it's one of the best JRPG's ever made. If they wanna release a better version I'd definitely be on board.

It never ceases to amaze me how little effort SE puts into their PC ports. I guess they sell decently enough that they don't feel the need to do more.

OMG those screenshots. :( Value of my SNES original is in no danger of going down with this POS port.

You know, i've been wishing for the Dragon Quest series on Steam for a long time but if this is the level of effort that Square puts into his PC classics then i'm not so sure anymore. This is hideous beyond belief.

My face right now:

This should be the new go-to image to highlight how messed up this port is because yikes. FFVI's slightly dodgy pillars have nothing on this.

IIRC the other ports didn't get nearly as overwhelmingly negative Steam review averages as this one, it could be the thing to finally make them realize. That and all the refunds that must have rolled in.

Thanks for the new avatar.

the screenshots are kind of unbelievable, and the fact that they're using the UI of the mobile version is beyond dumb.

Are Square Enix removing reviews? I've seen a couple removed and the score is fluctuating quite a lot.

Sega deserve a good amount of praise for how they approached their ROM dump. They are one of the very few to get it right.

And then they went back and massively improved it with workshop support, the whole bedroom thing, improved emulation options etc post launch and released it as a free update.

Square Enix would never put in that effort.
I do not believe any publisher can remove reviews. If the game is refunded the review is removed though.

And yeah, SEGA is basically the best publisher when it comes to respecting their 16 bit games. Unfortunately for us they think that is all anyone wants from their back catalog usually.

Yeah of course you are right and they can't. Just thought it was weird that some seem to be taken a look at by Valve moderators:

At least 1 review has been removed for calling the port a fraud: https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198275246494/recommended/613830/

I don't agree with calling this port a fraud, but it's still a bit much to remove the review in my opinion.

I'm surprised people were so excited for yet another re release of this game, but shame on Square for doing shoddy work.

There are issues in the original tiling that are essentially invisible due to the original game's resolution and styling. Even if you play the original SNES game on a modern HDTV, you're not going to see such distracting squares everywhere. The issue is that Square-Enix added a unnecessary filter to the game that exacerbates what were basically invisible, minor flaws in the original. They are still accountable for that decision.

Exactly. They altered the game in a way to make it look worse, so the blood is on the devs that did the port. If they wanted to apply filters, they should have considered the consequences and altered the tilesets accordingly. But they didn't make any of those considerations. They applied a crappy filter, got the game code to barely work, and said it's good to go.

They should of given the port to people who actually care about Chrono Trigger *hint*

Yeah, I thought I remember seeing them squares before.

I mean, you know the graphics were designed for CRTV screens, right? And that's why you never noticed stuff like this?

I'm not even defending what Squeenix have done, I'm just pointing out that they using the exact same tiles in the exact same layout as before...and it doesn't work because they weren't designed for this.

Yeah, I played it on my SNES Classic over the weekend and it looked fantastic. Also great on my phone (via emulator) and Vita.

They said "updated", not IMPROVED.

Yeah, just saying I've noticed them before back in the day. It's just more prominent this way.

I think that person got a refund, they don't have the game listed on their profile

I check this thread every few hours to see if somebody created a mod to fix this mess, but whenever I check it, I see new screenshots of the game and I get sadder.
