There it is.

What makes you think Xbox owners haven't? Whats makes you think people dont own other consoles yet BC is just as enticing as anything on the horizon? And still, this BC isnt the traditional delivery that your using as reference either, old favorites are given new life.

My point is not an attack on xbox (I am an Xbox One X owner,) myself and many other people do not have the time to retread old ground due to family and work commitments.

For many people, it's not "retreating old ground". It's a second chance to play games they previously missed, maybe due to family and work commitments.

Personally, yesterday was the first time I played the first Forza Horizon, and I had a blast!

Interestingly, as someone who has a lot of commitments and little time to play games, I find myself "retreading old ground" because I can guarantee I'm going to enjoy those games, and my game time is valuable.

I own a 360, and just have a PS4 this generation, and while this alone doesn't make me want to pick up an XB1, it does make me excited about future generations of the Xbox console.

If all Xbox consoles from XB1 onward retain the BC list of their previous version, that's a massive plus in my book.

Yeah, good and fun games dont stop being good and fun when new stuff release. I know i can go back and play the first borderlands because i enjoy it, i'm not going to try every new loot shooter that comes out to see if they're on the same level. Plus i get to play borderlands for free.

While I'm not personally into that (but that's mainly because the number of enhanced games is low and I already either played them to death when they came out or just don't interest me period), I'm quite surprised this forum doesn't make a bigger fuss out of this.

That's, like, as "pro-consumer" as it can get.

Kudos to MS and hopefully more will come in the future.

An enhanced version of Lost Odyssey would be glorious, methinks.

That's because Xbox is doing it. It's easy as that. I'm really not blaming the community, but if tomorrow Sony would announce PS3 BC with certain titles at 4K - we would've a 100+ pages big thread in no-time. Sadly a lot of people intentionally ignore positive Xbox news.

Yeah, MS's investment in HVs/VMs and using a unified API (DirectX) from basically day 1 sure helped a lot to get this going. I really hope the competition takes note.

If I remember correctly, from the games' perspective, they run on an OG Xbox or X360. Every game has a custom "wrapper" created by Microsoft that allows for the specific improvements for that specific game when it gets loaded into the emulator.

So is it Microsoft themselves that are doing specific enhancements or are developers going back to their games to do it?

Not sure if already mentioned, but I remember reading that they might need to work out some licensing-stuff. But for the rest, it's mostly all on Microsoft I believe.

I seem to remember reading that "durango" (xbone) had specific hardware hooks baked in the design so as to have BC going.

To be precise:

Preliminary tests showed that support for key Xbox middleware XMA audio and texture formats was extremely taxing to do in software alone, with the former, Gammill noted, taking up two to three of the Xbox One's six CPU cores. But a SOC (system on chip) – basically an Xbox 360 chip inside every Xbox One, similar to how Sony put PS2 hardware inside the launch-era PS3s – would've not only been expensive, but it would've put a ceiling on what the compatibility team could do. "If we'd have gone with the 360 SOC, we likely would've landed at just parity," he said. "The goal was never just parity." So they built the XMA and texture formats into the Xbox One chipset.

I think us #dayONE folks need some credit for sticking with MS otherwise who knows if Xbox would even exist now. Who was there #dayONE !!??

Yup, and my day one is still working in my bedroom, the X was my first replacement for it.

I don't regret being there from the start, it hasn't been horrific or anything, as a lot of fanboys try to make out. I've had some great gaming on it with some long time friends who stuck with it.

Their policies with Backwards Compatibility and Xbox Play Anywhere have certainly made me not want to double dip anymore.

Now when I see a remaster that is just a resolution bump, I think why isn't it that free if you already own it?

Or when I see games being sold on different platforms, I don't want to rebuy it again.

And its getting to the point with cross-platform multiplayer that I don't want it if I can't do console to PC play. The next step is cross-network play, specifically between xbox live and steam. Some Microsoft games do it, Rise of Nations and Killer Instinct. They are teaching me to expect these things as normal.

Edit: also its the same with their console. I now expect my games to move forward with me. I expect their next console will still release new games on xbox one x. (will drop support for new games on original xbox one and s.)

Now:

Xbox One / S
Xbox One X

4-5 years:

Xbox One / S - end of life
Xbox One X
Next Xbox One

yes, it was designed this way.

also there is another interview from the BC team where they clearly say that BC was ready to go when xbone was supposed to be online-only, but they had to backtrack it and figure a way for it to work after they cancelled their original plans.
and then, as we all know, xbox had bigger problems upon releasing than just the BC team figuring out a new way to enable BC (via disc and not always online etc)

I said earlier, anybody that says that all this (360BC - xboxOGBC - enhanced BC) is either an outcome of luck, or happened because microsoft got so much behind ps4 and was pushed etc etc, he has to do some reading...

They basically managed to bring the magic of PC gaming to console without any of the hassle. If this were how things always were from the beginning, consoles would have incredible libraries. BC is important!
No they didn't, it's only a handful of games in comparison to PC and also 30fps locked games will always be stuck at that frame rate.

BC is a huge deal to me. It provides a lot of value. I don't trade or sell my games. I have a little over 200 X360 and about 150 OG Xbox games. Its awesome to be able to play those again in 4k/1080 with clean visuals.

I wish my PS4 pro could play the PS3, 2, 1 games I have. I have just as many or more of those.

I also have to give MS credit for making it work with physical discs. I try not to buy anything digital. It kinda pissed me off Sony expected me to buy the few games the updated for BC on PS3 and PS4 over again digitally.

When do these newest games get put up? I put in my Crackdown disc and it said it wasn't available to play.

Aren't publishers going to be mad against MS considering they are making them unable to remaster those games?

There's nothing to stop publishers doing remasters with upgraded textures and higher quality audio or even doing a full remaster like SotC. Hell, if BC continues to take off it might actually encourage them to invest in bringing old content up to date.

I agree, Microsoft could emulate PS3 on Xbone X! On the other hand I have 0 confidence in Sony's capability or business drive to do so :P.
LOL, ok, thats funny.

I wouldn't be surprised if they have that pc-ps3 emulator up and running, and they send pics of ps3 games running on xb1 to tease the ps team. (this is a joke)

I think the way the pc-ps3 emulator is going by people not at sony, sony could easily have started work on doing the same kinds of tricks (read their blogs, it's fascinating). A lot of it is pre-comilation of the executables and remapping graphics calls to vulcan. I think the last main hurdle is getting games that use a lot of SPEs to perform well, but honestly the 360 emulator has to face some of those same challenges.

My conclusion: it can be done, MS making 4k patches proves it can scale, but sony would rather resell you games then let you use your old library.

Yeah I played Ninja Gaiden Black the other day with a friend and we were blown away. I've always wanted a NGBremaster, and now I have it for free.

I never understood this argument considering they would still get more money from people buying the game for the first time. When RDR became BC on XBO it shot up to the top in sales rankings on Amazon (and that's not including digital sales).

I think people are underestimating the amount of sales MS are getting for these games from people who missed the boat last gen and are willing to buy for the first time to take advantage of the added graphics/performance.
I dunno - so far I have purchased 2 games: red dead and blue dragon, both dirt cheap. Then as they become compatible, I have taken my 360 boxes out of storage and put them on the shelf. It's a lotta' games.

I know one thing its that sony really needs to implement backwards compatability as a core feature of the ps5

There will be BC for sure on PS5, but I highly doubt we see anything like the upgrades to old games Microsoft is doing from Sony. Sony doesn't have the virtual machine engineering teams that Microsoft does that have managed to pull off this wizardry.

My point is not an attack on xbox (I am an Xbox One X owner,) myself and many other people do not have the time to retread old ground due to family and work commitments.
For many of us, old ground is infinitely more interesting than the new ground. I'll take BC NBA Jam and Lumines over pretty much anything else I've played this gen.

As a corollary, It's probably worth pointing out that those of us who had those same sorts of work and family commitments last gen still have a good number of 360 games we didn't complete. Including ones we may have already bought.

To me this is one of the 1X's biggest selling points that Microsoft aren't getting enough credit for. They themselves don't even seem to make a huge deal out of it relatively speaking and I'm not sure why.

I think they're getting a ton of credit, at least on gaming forums, not sure how much spills over into the mainstream (possibly not much). Could you imagine how their mindshare would be on gaming forums, if BC wasn't available? It's one of the main drivers of good will for them these days and it keeps on delievering for them due to the staggered release schedule, continually reminding people on an almost weekly basis of one of the main advantages of the Xbox ecosystem. I really hope Sony has BC next generation, otherwise, to me, Xbox is just a better value proposition due to BC. Do I want my main console (I'll still buy both) to be one that only plays PS5 games or the one that plays Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One and Xbox Next games? And many of the old games with PC like advantages, where they play even better than they originally did. It's really cool what they're doing here and most threads about BC reflect that.

they got my attention with this stuff today.

I was already considering it for EDF 2017 at a solid 60fps.

I will always recommend people buying EDF main series games, but you're not getting a solid 60fps on 2017 even on the One X. The game is still good, it's only that that's too much to ask.
