This means as a bow user, you almost always want to be going for an elemental bow and a rapid shot + power shot style. You never want to go elemental bow and use dragon piercer because there is a 0.3 elemental damage modifier on that attack.
To get the most damage out of your bow, you want to cap your element, run critical element (Rathalos set bonus), and power shot the hell out of the monster's weak spot.

So for this kind of build, what bows are best and what other skills are instrumental?

I refuse to use the dragon King eye patch on any of my builds. When I work in weakness exploit I have the charm level 2 or just slot in decorations for it, which I'm fortunate to have found 3 of.

There isn't much to choose from anyway lol. Legiana, Tobi, Anja from top off my head.
Skills: WE, Elemental Up until you reach the weapon's elemental cap (it's individual, put on decos until it doesn't increase further), anything for Affinity, CritBoost, Spread and Normal Up, Constitution for stamina management

E: What do you know, Phemeto did a video on it just a few hours ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ei6d0VhhsvY

Same, I would only use it with my LS build cuz it would match her look. Or if I ever make a GS character, I will use it there for looks as well.

That you are, I just need 1 *cries*. Although I finally got that elementless jewel I've been angling for thanks to a tip in this thread to try tier 2 tempereds instead of just elders. Also got a Crit boost jewel that I didn't really need but it's working as a good placeholder until that tenderizer jewel drops.

Armor sets that look good > Armor sets with the best skills ;D

I don't think there will EVER be Transmog in this game. I think people just need to get more creative with their loadouts than looking what the internet says to do. Shoot, you can charm in Weakness exploit instead of having the eyepatch, or you could use the Teo arms for +2 weakness exploit. There is so much variety of what you can do yet people default to the internet without thinking of what they can do differently, which is fine, but that doesn't mean there must be Transmog. I have numerous ways to load out my character and I have some where the sets look good for fashion and others that look terrible but transmogging will just force everyone to run the exact same thing just like it is now, you just won't see it.

As an aside, people focus so much on offense then wonder why they get carted all the time. I try to explain that there are defensive armor skills as well you could use but that would ruin their hyper offensive play style and that is not what the internet is currently saying to do.

I really want to focus more on defense as, well... I'm not the best at dodging moves. What are some general skills I should focus on trying to get? This is my first MH game so I'm still fumbling around in the dark, mostly :p

Haven't really started grinding too hard for certain gear sets, but 3p Bagel for the Rank 5 Earplugs, Rathalos Chest B and Odogaron Pants A have carried me from like HR9 to HR 57. Haven't used the eyepatch. Just crafted a full Nerg set last night, but haven't actually played any quests with it. Probably going back to my earplugs in the end anyway. Too nice a QoL for me to abandon it in favor of pure dps traits (and your dps is 0 when you're getting stunned by monster roars anyway).

I would start by doing vitality. With vitality you can have up to 200 health because it stacks with the food buff from the cats. Then of course, defense charm for extra defense/ or defense skill for extra defense. Also, if you can make max potions for health, you can take extra defense (or elemental defense) Large for food then use a max potion to get your health up. After that, I would get earplugs as that allows you to damage the monster without recourse while it's roaring. That's just off the top of my head. when you go to forge armor, press the R3 button and do a search by skills, you can read every single skill and what it does. Try some out, some work more than others.

Did you watch the GH guide? Now I wanna give it another chance lol

That guy really knows how to sell weapons on you.

I'm still in the 'explore everything there is' phase, with Dual Blades as my main weapon and Hammer as an alternative when the monster calls for it. I have a an easier time hunting Anjanath with a Hammer than with Dual Blades, for example. But now I think I'm going to give SnS a try. Fits in pretty well with the fast and mobile approach I tend to favor, too.

I'm still missing a third crit boost decoration. Those seem rare as well. I'm storing up a ton of useless jewels right now and accumulating a lot of research points to maybe take advantage of the decoration melder exploit. I wasn't going to bother with it at first but now that I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel of decorations I'm after ,it may be a good way to finish it off.

For those not in the know, the decorations gained from melding random ones always grant a predetermined set of new decorations. This is a different set of predetermined ones for every player. Since the game auto saves, you can use cloud saves or other means to reload your last save and not use the decorations and research points if you know the next group of decorations aren't something you're after. So instead of randomly going to the melder and dumping a bunch of resources and getting nothing of value in return, (which I do all the time)you can plan out which decorations are coming up on your predetermined list, and at that point only hit up the melder when you know there's something you want from the "random" box.

Do they change every time you go there? Or after a quest? Like how do you get the stuff you want if you always load to the point where the next one is something you don't want? Like how do you circumvent them if the list is predetermined and you always start from the same point?
Also what other means? I got no cloud saves...

So how much hp do monsters usually have in high rank? I know they have like 2.6x the health in multiplayer or whatever, but my damage showed up on one the cards at the end saying I did almost 10K to a diablos. This actually bums me out in a weird way, because I spent time fumbling with bow coating in order to poison it twice, for ~300-400 damage. So like, in the grand scheme of things, if one person of four is able to pump out damage like that, what's even the point of poison or blast? Even in hunts when you can get the status off four or five times it feels like a drop in the bucket.

I haven't completely looked into every detail, but from what I understood is that every time you go on a quest it moves the predetermined list. But don't quote me on that, I haven't tried any of this myself yet and merely skimmed through the topic i saw on the subject. And people have apparently used their saves on an external drive or USB to do the same thing cloud saves do.

GH has helped me for years in MH games. Capcom should have him on their payroll.

It sure would be cool if there was an Elder that isn't blatantly skewed in favor of ranged players :/

That's pretty much it, and it even has an "as long". They really need to put attacks that damage players from range afar, not everything being fucked up around the monster :/

I think there's a decent chance of it moving forward, since Nergigante is also not horribly biased toward ranged, nor is Xeno. It's mostly the old (kind of crap) Elders that have the problem, presumably because ranged in the older games couldn't actually dodge for shit.

which of the arena weapons are worth making? I finally powered through (solo) and got all the coins needed. I don't want to waste it T-T

Yeah I guess so, I'm honestly rambling after duoding a Temp.Kushala with a ranger and seeing how much of a miserable time I had to hit the monster compared to him lol

I use the patch but I have hid helmet option. A lot of my gear is fashion but the patch is just too good.

Why? I have to say the eye patch looks ugly. If I used it I would look like Solid Snake. And I really don't want that.

I like a lot of the helmets in the game and like making my character look appeasing to my eyes. Not keen on an eye patch. Further more , I like going against the grain and being different than everyone else. So many people are following cookie cutter builds they see online. Thankfully this game allows for really different builds and even if you go for similar abilities there are multiple options to get them.

The problem with eye patch is that even if you use the hide helm option, it still takes away from seeing all the cool helms out there. I really don't understand why they made it so easy to get it either. I didn't even know how many cool male helms are out there (I play female) until I looked up armor videos. Everyone is either wearing the eyepatch or just helmless. A bit of a bummer when it comes to seeing cool helms online, tbh.

Uploaded that Tempered Nergigante investigation and we beat it on our first go. I swear he is easier than Tempered Teo.

Got a stone to unlock augmentation on that.

Elemental cap feels like a bandade since the skill system got revamped and it's so easy to add in an effort not to let it get out of hand.

When the skills go up to 7 points and yet every weapon seems to cap at level 2 or 3 it feels pointless.

Have people done tests across weapons? I have to assume only GS can even get close to using the 5% +100.

I'm making a rapid fire elemental Bowgun for all the types and curious what the math works out to for elemental ups on Bowgun ammo. There is no number to see so I can't know where the cap is

tbh im not really feeling the endgame of World
A couple Tempered elders that you might not have investigations for and have rare chance of dropping unlocks for your main weapon

Cant wait for MHWG

Was I not good enough? :P

On the contrary :) it was quite fun, although your LS build is more viable than mine^^

We can do kushala some day. I went after a tempered kirin for too long, got 3 new investigations (the one I posted and another kirin and one vaal) but ran out of time later as it was limping >_<

At least I know know how to get that damn unicorn with LBG. I love the Karma^^

Kushala is so easy
I usually bring 13 flashpods and my poison lvl 3 SnS
full

SnS is still something I'll have to try outside the Arena-Quests ...

Btw:
Another major criticism... no rainbow pigment for Poogie ... :(

Sorry if this is a stupid question but I've not even touched the arena yet - where can you see the arena weapons? Are they usable in the non-arena parts of the game or are they just for in the arena itself?

They're at the bottom of the Weapon upgrade tree. The last tree at the end which requires coins to upgrade. You can see the stats there.

Yes, you can use them anywhere like all weapons.
