Goddammit. Woke up this morning with my first pimple in 4 months. I've been eating greek yogurt for a week and then this happens. It's incredible how quickly some milk and derivatives make me break out.

So I made research about my skin type. And it turns out that my skin is either oily or mixed. I think my skin is mixed because it has large pores in certain parts while it is dry in other parts. Big thanks to Galkinator for pointing me in the right direction. Now that I have that out of the way, I've made research on the products to buy (thank you for writing an excellent OT Leona Lewis) . Can someone please take a look and let me know if those are the correct products to buy?

Here's some relevant information about my skin:
  • Come from a warm country (i.e. I can handle the sun more than others in the Netherlands)
  • Skin is probably mixed, second choice would be oily
Products to buy:
  1. Cleanser: https://www.bol.com/nl/p/cetaphil-milde-reiniger-460-ml/9200000052201153/
  2. Peeling: https://www.paulaschoice.nl/nl/skin...Xax5sXtPwnrs76ZFoZ44lALC22CuoB_YaAhSFEALw_wcB
  3. Moisterizor: https://www.kruidvat.nl/diadermine-hydra-balance-dagcreme/p/571613 (for normal and mixed skin)

Happy I could be of help! RpgN
Unfortunately I'm not really knowledgeable in specific brands or products, and honestly the best way to know is to try them out yourself. Some or even most brands have tester products in their shops, so make yourself a day dedicated to purchasing your products - try a few different brands, see how it feels/looks and if there are no reactions. Make sure you don't get products that make your skin feel dry, because then it can become even oilier to "make up" for the dryness.

Anyone have any experience with TCA peels? Also what is the best treatment for ice pick scars and deeper scarsn? (BHA and AHA is not the miracle cure for everything... at least for me). Thanks.

So happy to see this thread make it over!
I'm a few years into Leona Lewis' advice and it's working out, I'm a guy 20s, normal/oily skin.

Cerave cleanser; kiss my face sunscreen; Paula choice 2% BHA (don't use it much anymore); Paula Choice pore reducing toner; Olay Regenerating Serum at night.

Leona, is the Olay still the go to for nighttime after cleansing? I assume the other recs still hold just glossing over this thread :)
I think I got a good deal on some 3.4oz Olay Regenerist Serum larger bottles, off Amazon. T
he 1.7oz bottle prices were adding up, or maybe I was applying too much, not a small face though haha!

Gimme the rundown Resetters, is it acceptable to "rub" your face with a washcloth? The immediate result feels about the same as exfoliating using cream, but does it have negative long-term effects?

I think this would depend on the texture of the cloth and the resilience of your skin. My general sense is that the fibers of a typical washcloth can be quite harsh and uneven. As such, the friction can cause irritation and potentially compromise your moisture barrier, especially when rubbing. Not to mention potential problems with cloth hygiene on reuse. Perhaps try a product formulated for chemical exfoliation and, if you must use a cloth otherwise, consider patting/gentle wiping with a microfiber cloth or konjac sponge? I know many folks (me included) who do not use any form of towel on the face and prefer to simply pat dry, but the texture of microfiber and konjac is much more gentle and will still help you cleanse the skin and gently exfoliate.

As a person who suffers from dry skin, the best difference I ever made was using moisturizer (I use CeraVe). I mostly only get acne to the left or right above my chin where my skin seems dry. I apply lotion once a day to my whole face and rarely worry about the bad zits (the ones deep below the skin). Yeah I get the occasional pimple, but I don't try to mess with it, and it goes away fast. Messing with zits causes increased redness and discomfort.

So currently my skin care routine consists of using a facial soap and moisturiser twice a day, and twice a week I use an exfoliant and one of those black pastes that gets rid of blackheads (if I remember I try to use a facial mask twice a week too, but I'm not very consistent with that one). Is there any point in using a toner on top of all that? And any tips for large pores?

I've also started to use CeraVe products a few months ago. One of the best decisions I've made. I use the facial cleanser and lotion.

Yes, BHA/AHA products are great for surface concerns, but are not going to make a huge impact on atrophic scars. It really depends on a number of factors, especially the depth and severity of scarring. TCA peels are a common and effective procedure for atrophic scarring. They're usually affordable, too. However, TCA peels are very strong and you should be cautious. Generally, you do risk having an increase in permanent hyperpigmentation (especially if you have dark skin) and depending on the concentration, will experience some varying swelling, pain/burning, and redness. The newer CROSS method technique is supposed to work particularly well with ice pick scars and, because of the technique (multiple applications a spot-based treatment) is an option for a wider range of skintones and severities of scarring. That said, I would not do a TCA peel at home. Please consult an experienced dermatologist or plastic surgeon and have them do the procedure in office. Protect your skin and health.

Other options: Laser resurfacing treatments are a popular and effective treatment for atrophic scars, but can be quite expensive. People have also had some luck with dermarolling, which can be more affordable, but there are risks that need to be considered. Tretinoin (Retin-A) use may also help reduce the appearance of mild atrophic scars. Good luck! Your best bet will be talking to a dermatologist or plastic surgeon about your options and what would be best for you.

Got a skin-related question, not necessarily skin-care related.

I'm 27, male, currently obese, and haven't really exercised or gone outdoors at all for quite a while. I'm in the process of changing the latter 3.

My skin is currently kinda "splotchy", uneven, even a little wrinkly around the nose.

Does anyone have any experience with the effects on facial skin of getting back to a normal weight and keeping up a regular exercise routine after never really having done so? I know I could just wait and see, really, but I wanna peek ahead a little, so to speak!

Wanted to hear y'all's thoughts on Majestic Pure Himalayan Salt Body Scrub to be used as a facial exfoliate. I deal with acne as a 27 year old, so I wanted to see methods of mitigating it without wrecking my budget on facial care. I've been using Cetaphil facial wash, and I adopted using the brand's moisturizer recently since I live in a dry climate now. I also don't mind taking alternative recommendation of exfoliate brand as long as it's relatively affordable.

That could work well as a physical exfoliator for the body, but I'm not sure I would put that on my face. Salt is pretty abrasive, even if finely milled, and you want to be gentle with your skin. If you still want to use a physical exfoliant, try a microfiber cloth or konjac sponge. Much more gentle, less concern of adverse reactions, but still get the exfoliation.

Is CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion an OK nighttime moisturizer, or does it have one of the no-no ingredients?

Sure! Give it a try. As with any new product, I suggest patch testing it a bit before full-face application as CeraVe is not going to work for everyone, usually because of a sensitive to fatty alcohols, silicones, or capric triglycerides.

OK, wow. I was thinking about establishing a skin care routine as part of my self-improvement kick. Thanks for the new thread!

I develop a real grimy sheen by midday on my forehead and the sides of my nose. I guess this common for those with oily/dry skin. I also sweat a bit on my way into work due to taking public transportation.

Usually I use water/paper-towel to try and freshen up. Are there any recommended facial wipes I could consider as an interim step, or should I just focus on overall facial care?

Eh, most wipes are poorly textured and usually loaded with fragrance, alcohols that will make your skin feel dry and tight, or oils that do little more than irritate. The only wipes I can even kinda get behind are micellar water wipes, but even then you should check ingredients and do gentle patting/swiping instead of rubbing. Maybe try a refreshing facial mist and gently pat it in instead? That should help. Many people like the facial sprays by Mario Badescu. Heritage Rosewater & Glycerin spray is also well liked and will be more hydrating. You may even want something more basic like the Natural Mineral Water Facial Spray by Evian. Definitely work on getting into a routine that works for your skin concerns and patch test things as you go. It takes a while, between product testing and all, but I suspect that the sheen will be reduced once you've found a set of products and practices that work well for you. Good luck!

I'll try and keep that in mind thank you. I do seem to be in trouble already though. It seems that some of the recommended products in the op (cetaphil and cerave) are very hard to come by in the Netherlands unless you're willing to import and pay a lot of money. The cetaphil cleanser that I linked is apparently for dry and sensitive skin only.

Looks like I have no choice but to look at my local store and make some deeper research. I found one cleanser that has natural ingredients and no fragnace etc. I'll be giving it a try.

One question popped up while making research. We've established that scrub and peeling are different, right? When I'm looking for peeling products I see many that are called face scrub peeling etc. Now this is confusing me. Are they the same thing after all?

They are indeed different. Peels use more chemicals and go deeper inside your skin, and cleanse your skin from the inside out, remove your top layer of epidermis and excess oil, etc.
A scrub is using those tiny grains(like salt particles) to physically scratch off your dead skin cells, but in my opinion they do more harm than good. They are very abrasive as mentioned here, and they do micro-scratches to your skin and can irritate it further.

I naturally have good skin. I don't do anything to it besides washing it when I'm in the shower.

Having said that, I will take some of the advice in the OP because it sounds really beneficial in the long run.

Thanks for creating this thread

Wash face twice--once in morning, once at night (no soap or other products; only water).
Moisturize after washing with some random lotion.
Barely any sugar in my diet (only sugar I really consume is a bowl of Honey Bunches of Oats cereal in the morning).
This is what I do and it works great.

Well, you'll probably start looking overall healthier and that might make your skin look a little more "glowy" so to speak, but it won't really help with the issues you mentioned. You're pretty much at the age where going forward you'll gradually start to see signs of aging and sun damage like fine lines, wrinkles, uneven pigmentation, and loss of elasticity in the skin. What's your current skincare routine look like?

I do nothing, basically. Wash my face twice a day, that's it.

I should read up on some basic routines, I suppose.

Yeah definitely. It doesn't have to be super complicated but you should start using sunscreen and moisturizer. An exfoliating agent like AHA/BHA, or an anti-aging ingredient like retinol will help with fine lines and uneven skin tone, just don't overdo it.

You see, I'm making sure because the products written in Dutch are confusing as hell when they're called Face Srub Peeling etc. Then I'm not sure which of the two they are. I've noticed products written in Dutch not only use different words but they might be mixing the names not just with scrubs/peelings but also other skin products. I'm going to have to be careful with what I'm getting. Thanks again.

This thread is awesome, going to try some products from the OP. Thanks for the work Leona Lewis.

edit: just to be sure I'll be doing it right

step 1:
CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser (Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser for me most likely)
step: 2:
Morning: Paula's Choice Skin Balancing Pore-Reducing Toner
Night: Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Peeling
step 3:
Morning: Kiss My Face
Night: Olay Body Quench Body Lotion

I'm also trying to reduce my sugar and milk intake to a minimum since that often causes outbreaks for me.

Does anyone have any insight into South Korean skincare? I'm really intrigued by the idea of oil cleansing followed by a water-based cleanser.

Right now I'm just cleansing and using light SPF moisturizer, but I feel like I could be doing more for my face.

I have eczema (dermatitis) on my face and under eyes bought about by products containing soap (SLS and stuff...) has anyone found a soap free cleanser that works for them, and removes all the dirt and grime? I'm using water only at the moment and that stops me from going gym and stuff as the sweat and dirt just gives me acne :(

Edit: Oh and I've tried Cetaphil's products, a no go for me :(

Question here! What you people think about the Avon's Anew line? In my country it is seem as one of the best ''commercial'' lines in anti aging cosmetic treatments.

The thing is: I am 22 years old and after a few years of reckless lack of care I recently started a Korean 10 steps skincare routine, but by now I am finishing several products (from several brands) I previoulsy bought, and intend to replace them with Korean/Japanese products in the future. It is worth it? Their technology is that far ahead?

Currently I have all type of products, from drugstore/Avon to french brands like Nuxe/Claudalie and some natural vegetal oils too. I also have a custom pharmacy made cream/serum with that formula from the C E Ferulic serum from Skinceuticals (still a little afraid from this last one to be honest).

But my main concern is that for the first time I am having dark circles and fine lines in my forehead, so I wanted to try the Anew eye creams, since they are affordable and my skin isn't that mature yet. Any thoughts?

I am using the double cleanse method for some time now, and I think it is the best I found until now. But I didn't try the oil cleanser yet - I use vegetal oils (mainly coconut, almond and grape seed oil) to massage the face and clean before I use the water-based cleanser (that removes the oil completely). It is great for removing even the hardest waterproof make up, and avoid a lot of skin trauma I had before while trying to take it off.

In your case, you can use a oil-reducing, pore-minimizing toner like the Paula's Choice Skin Balancing Pore-Reducing Toner and follow up with a light SPF like the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen. Depending on your oiliness level, that might be enough moisture to get you through the day.

Using a 5% benzoyl peroxide cream at night like the Rugby brand is a good idea, too. It'll make your acne ancient history.

Is that the same as Duac cream (UK)? I have had that a few times from the doctor. Keep it in the fridge and use it a couple of weeks or so before I need my skin to clear up for a holiday or event. Works pretty damn well for my 33 years old acne face, lol. Can't use it indefinitely as it seems to wear off effectiveness but used for a few weeks at a time has quite miraculous results if you're constantly getting spots day in day out.

Much nicer than when I was in my teens and was on medication that required monthly blood tests cos they can mess up your kidneys or something! That medication had longer lasting results but eventually it came back.

I use DHC cleansing oil when I wear makeup and wash off with Perfect Whip. The oil rinses off so nice by itself tho - baby smooth skin. I also use it when my face is really oily, because oil removes oil better :) You can buy a smaller trial size too, not sure where tho.

I have been using jojoba oil daily as a leave on for about 7 weeks now and my skin is immaculate. Has also been great as a leave in for my hair. A little goes a long ass way.

I use a another oil blend of sunflower, safflower, hemp seed, rose hip and jojoba to clean every two days.

I just did my first 15% peel today after getting noticeable results from a 10% peel.
Did you do it yourself? If so do you mind sharing how you did it? Such as how long left on, what do you wash it off with, any products used after etc. What sort of noticeable results did you see as well?
