Kim Kyungran:
She's fierce, she's "pierce", Kyungran takes no bullshit from anyone. One of the older contestants, she nearly always holds court often calling out the likes of Gura and Sangmin for their shenanigans or any slights towards her. This "scary nuna" can bully people around with the best of them.
My favorite contestant so far! So earnest.

And LOL so much Ocean's 11 soundtrack happening.

Just saw ep 2 season 1. Kim Gura is good at being a driving player who can make the entire game appear one way while all the while stacking the game against you. I dont care if folks hate him. I like aggressive play and villains. He was needed for this. You need a mastermind thats ruthless, because when you end up in a game uncertain what to do you always know you can go to the most ruthless one there and find a player with a plan and a chance. No matter the game he makes certain he doesn't come out appearing like an underdog to the group and thats his strength. He makes them certain he has a plan and can use their own paranoia and survival instincts to his advantage by keeping calm and making certain they are nervous. They come to him and thats why he does well. He keeps them shook up and makes them easy to manipulate and use.

I don't like him because he seems to be playing with an unfair advantage over the rest. He seems to be the most famous guys in the group, so consciously or unconsciously the other contestants have more deference to him (hell, he has two lackeys that don't seem to bother thinking of betraying him because they admire him, and the most difficult thing in a game like this is precisely teammates which you can be sure they won't betray you), and it seems no one is trying to remove him from the game because he is who he is, even if clearly he is a good player with good advantage so he should be the target.

But I will give you he is a good in both thinking plans and manipulating people, and he understands the game is, at the end of the day, about eliminating someone else. I think Minsoo didn't understand that, even he has a good head and game sense.

Starting episode 3 of season 1, I really like the setup of this game (abundance & famine), it requires a lot of thinking, planning and coordination.

I don't like tactical Yutnori as I don't know how it's played. :(
I think it's quite an interesting game, but it's entirely dependent on knowing Yutnori itself, which I didn't pick up for a while.

Pure Yutnori:
* It's fundamentally like Ludo; get around the board and back to the start, if you land on the junction points you can take a shortcut, if you land on an opponent you can capture them. If you land on your own piece you can 'ride' it and move both with one move, but both get captured if they're landed on.
* Movement is done by throwing four Yut sticks - think of that as approximately like tossing coins. Different combinations of sticks landing marked side and blanked side (heads and tails, effectively) result in different amounts of movements. Counting 'marked' as heads, 'unmarked' as tails, we get:
* 3H1T: A Do, you can move one piece one place.
* 2H2T: A Gae, you can move one piece two places
* 1H3T: A Yeol, you can move one piece three places
* 0H4T: A Yut, you can move one piece four places, and you get an extra turn
* 4H0R: A Mo, you can move one piece five places, and you get an extra turn
* Note that you keep throwing until you stop getting extra turns, and then you move each of them; so if you get (say) two Yuts and a Gae, you finish those throws then you can make three moves; two of four places, one of two.

Tactical Yutnori:
* First the simple change: A 1-place move (A Do) is now a Back Do, which is one place backwards. If you go backwards past the line, that counts as completing a lap.
* It's played in teams; only the active death match's participants counters 'count' for the win; their helper still plays a full set of counters, but only plays to assist, so their counters can be used to capture and block the opposition.
* Now the big change, and where it gets psychological: Each of the four players has one stick that is marked on both sides and one which is blank on both sides. In other words, rather than actually throwing the sticks randomly, for a given player's turn each of the players in the game secretly chooses one of heads or tails for them.
* So you can control your movement by anticipating which sticks the other team will give you and picking your sticks to complement them in your favour... but then they can second-guess that and not do what you're expecting.
* It's pointed out early on that if the team not moving delivers "HT", the moving team cannot get an extra turn. But then they can use that expectation to freely pick whether to move two or three places, or back one.
* Extra tactics come in when the non-playing team has specific moves they want to deny from the playing team. But any time the non-moving team delivers paired throws (HH or TT), that runs the risk of giving an extra turn to the moving team if they anticipate it.

Made the GAF thread for this way back when, so happy to see it's found a home here on ResetERA!

For what it's worth, the best two players are Sangmin and Yeonseung.

I'm liking this a lot. The suspense of who decided to back-stab someone is amazing.
Though I'd like to see Kim Gura get booted, just cause he seems untouchable.

I had heard about this, but didn't realize it was basically Liar Game. That's one of my favorite mangas.

I gave the first episode a shot... and I'm in.

Lana Del Ray is by far my favourite musical moment in this.

It's kind of amazing the library of music content they can put in the series. I think I heard that either the company producing The Genius or the network it airs on basically had cornered the music licensing market for overseas rights. I can't imagine what the music budget for a TV show in the U.S. would be if they tried to license everything they use on this show.

There's a really nice musical moment in one of the early Season 3 episodes too. The ending themes they pick in particular are so thoughtfully selected.

Season 1 Episode 8 (Kong's Dilemma)

TOP 10 ANIME BETRAYALS

Such a great episode. You just can tell, the moment they show you the design of that game, that plans are probably not going to go well.

Season 3.
I forgot how much I liked the cast in this one.

Also it's easy to dislike Dongmin but also to love him. What a great character for a TV show such as this.

Oh, and Ahyoung: <333

I finished the first season. I'm pretty happy with the winner
my man Jinho! he was very intelligent without totally being oblivious to the social aspect (although he wasn't as good in that as other players), quickwitted too, llikeable, a gamer, and the whole 'he always was 2nd place in the proGamer scene' made people root for him.

I was surprised with Kynugran, she showed to be a much more formidable player than I thought at first. In the last games she showed signs of brilliance, like using suddenly sentences with 'or' to make 50/50 truth/false statements. Although in general terms women were very competitive in this show, for example I expected better of the Mensa student, she did pretty badly.

Kim Sunggyu:
Kpop idol, member of boy band Infinite.

Now immortal saying about Sunggyu posted on korean chat room said:
Sunggyu is ugly but handsome
He's rude but well-mannered
He's stupid but smart
He's close with Lee Sangmin but he's not close with Lee Sangmin
He can't understand the games but he's the one who understands them the most
He hates Hong Jinho but he's a fan of Hong Jinho
He's hyper but lazy
He's desperate but confident
He's rude but he greets others the most

Highlights: Sunggyu writes a letter full of respects but light on garnets to his "sunbae" Sangmin:

yohwanpostert1sx2.jpg

Lim Yohwan:
Emperor Terran and probably the most famous Starcraft player in Korea -- the land where Starcraft players are stars of their own. Some people say he "hacked" The Genius and saw through the show's meta-game -- and he kinda did, but not really... His wife Kim Gayeon is also notable for being such a formidable person that we hear rumblings about her even she is not present and when she DOES appear on the show in season 3 she leaves an unforgettable impression.

I just finished S1Ep10. I can definitely see the skill in Tactical Yutinori. The Lana Del Rey in this episode is hilarious. I'm glad this thread popped up and reminded me to get back into this show...have to finish season one this weekend.

Right? That's what I meant a few posts back. It's my favourite musical moment by far. The lyrics make no sense in that situation. It's just hilarious.

Love this show, but still never watched the 4th season.

I think the third season was kind of disappointing for me so I just fell off a little too much.

finished season 1, want to start season 2
i don't really start watching new tv shows, and hadn't started anything new in ages. because people always say "oh you gotta watch this" and then i start and it's shit but i can't put things done after 1 episode (unless they're utter garbage) so i waste a lot of time on something that i could have avoided. specially with american shows, it's been like 3 or 4 years that i've ignored all new shows.
this one i randomly started because of this thread, and i'm so glad i did. thank you OP.
this was the first korean show i've watched in the original language and i absolutely loved it (i've watched one or two korean films before). so this was really my first entry into korean entertainment and culture. one thing i loved is the respect people have for each other, specially with younger people towards older people. like sunggyu, no matter how back-stabby he could get, he was always so respectful, i didn't know that was part of the korean culture.
the main games themselves ranged from good to great, but i have to say, i wasn't a fan of the deathmatch games. tactical yutnori was fucking exhausting and i still didn't get the rules fully, and the rock paper scissors game was unnecessary with how it usually played out. indian poker wasn't bad but it usually had one side that just wasn't good at gambling.
i grew to really like kyungran, she played really well, and went all the way without really betraying someone.
my second favorite was sunggyu, he turned out to be way smarter than i anticipated. even tho i didn't like jinho a lot, i liked his relationship with sunggyu, and also sangmin's relationship with sunggyu. jinho and sunggyu had a lot of scenes together in the behind the scens clips that weren't in the show, they had like a full on bromance going on.
in the end i wish kyungran was the winner, and she could have easily won had the circumstances been slightly different (her supporters were weak compared to jinho's) but still, she came really far.
oh and the fucking sad montages at the end with lana del rey and random covers of other songs, at first i was laughing but by the final episodes they really worked.

Can some one explain the real life reasons why they're always making references to Sangmin's money woes? Someone says he has had his assets taken away, and he says his wages are garnished. I don't want to search as I haven't finished S1 yet.

This article seems like a good recap:
https://www.koreaexpose.com/icon-debt-koreas-sought-celebrity/

It doesn't even mention The Genius in any way so you can freely read it and get to know the wonder that is Sangmin a bit closer.

Just finished episode 9. I'm going to keep bumping this thread until I finish this show and bring happiness to the people who haven't discovered this gem.

Most surreal moment: Cowboy Bebop music out of fucking nowhere!

Episode 5 has my favorite use of Cowboy Bebop so far. That episode was all fuckery all the time and I loved it.
The eliminated contestants collaborating purely to make the death match as dramatic as possible was so good.

After starting in on this series I remembered Kaiji the Ultimate Survivor was a thing and started watching it. Holy shit I think the numbered card game in the first round of The Genius had to be pulled from the rock/paper/scissors bout. Its so similar it hurts and yet it still came out differently on The Genius and just as crazy!

I love these shows involving strategy and subterfuge for survival. If you get a chance definitely watch Kaiji The Ultimate Survivor or the live movie adaptation Kaiji the Ultimate Gambler. If you liked round 1 of The Genius it'd be right up your alley...only much darker.

Been meaning to watch this show because of Sang-min. Didnt know he appeared in the first season so i finally decided to give it a go.
Just finished it a few hours ago and sang-min didn't disappoint. Great cast all around that helped it entertain without it getting too cutthroat/negative.
Episode 11 had my favourite challenge as it kept the contestants on their toes. The death match felt like one of the worst as it wasn't about who would win but who would lose first.
Was glad about the top three as they felt like regardless of who came first deserved to win.

Started season 2 and in the first episode sang-min is talking about how he misses the cast from season 1 as season 2s cast are too negative. I would agree with him to be honest. Still will try to power through and see if it gets any better.

Just starting season 2, can't wait to get further. Since I'm on this kick, I guess I should ask if there's anywhere to watch non American versions of the Mole? I love the civilian American seasons of that show, would've loved for it to continue.

Yep, there's been a few subbed. I'll write up a few in the game show OT, but to get you started, WIDM English Subs on YouTube is the current Dutch subber.

Awesome, I probably won't get to them for awhile anyways, since I still have three seasons of The Genius and one million other current english shows to watch, but I'm glad to know they're out there. Looking forward to your thread!

Holy shit that first episode!!

I was pretty certain that
Jinho would eliminate Junseok, since Jinho didn't seem like the type of guy to betray someone for no reason. I was hoping that Jinho would have gone to Junseok to basically extort him out of his garnet lol.

However I was NOT expecting that twist with Sangmin! Bruh! Really clever bit of trickery there.
Although I thought that it said at the start no thievery was allowed?
