So I got the game and...oof, it needs work

Lots of little issues with the graphics. There's a weird flicker in some zoom levels that goes away if you zoom in and out briefly. Some of the background detailing is so over the top that I have a hard time finding my units. Tried to play a game with a friend and sending out invites literally didn't work for me or him. We'd send out an invite and the other person never got it.

On top of that, AI pathfinding is horrid, the lack of farm queuing is just painful, and the soundtrack...man the soundtrack. What a shame. They butchered pretty much every song. Give the original soundtrack a listen. It's like night and day.

Some of this stuff can be fixed with updates. Others, like the soundtrack, kinda can't be. Well maybe a "play original soundtrack" option in the settings, but still.

I've been in touch with Microsoft and ASUS on several occasions and they've assured me it's the motherboard, outside of a few instances where they weren't certain. It's possible it's not the motherboard at all, but I'm not sure what to think after trying every method under the sun; including updating via Windows Update itself, Windows Update Assistant, Media Creation Tool and a clean install. I even got another motherboard of the same model (and upgraded the rest), but Windows 1703 simply refuses to play ball.

Meanwhile, I have an updated and fully working build of Windows 10 1709 on an old i7 920 + Asus P6T SE from 2008.

So if you take a windows 1709 iso and do a clean install (format and everything booting off the usb/dvd) it doesnt work? what does it do?

WinStore - > WOLOLOO -> Steam

I wish. I hate using this desktop/mobile/appstore thing.

But the game is... Weird. StarCraft Remastered felt a bit better tbh. Pathfinding is horrible. But there are some new neat elements - like new animation for destruction. And you can queue units! Holy Molly. I think it's for the hardcore AoE1 fans only though.

Yeah the pathfinding is still real rough. Watching 4 axemen slowly queue up alongside each other, all going for the same spot to attack a building, and then spending another 10 seconds figuring out where they need to go is a bit too "classic" for my tastes.

Enjoying going through the initial campaign though. As a young C&C junkie almost all my time with Age was spent in the scenario editor, giving myself massive forces to play with rather than go through the "complex" resource gathering the game expects of you. The history blurbs are a nice touch.

I thought this was coming out on Xbox one for some reason.

Microsoft has been using the Xbox brand for some games that have all kinds of Xbox features (achievements and so on) without actually being on Xbox. We've had mobile-like games do that, now there's this. At the Milan Games Week, this game was under a giant green banner for Xbox. And yet, it's PC. I wouldn't be shocked to see this work on Xbox if you use keyboard & mouse in the future, though.

I'm curious on what are they going to do with the remasters of AOE2 in AOE3

The upgraded sprites will be cool in AOE2 which now has a lot of content thanks to the steam edition, I would love to see the new campaigns feel more cohesive with the original ones, specially the forgotten empires ones.

And with 3 I guess that upscaled models will do the job since I can't see what else could they improve without changing the game that much

Do we know if they are even going to bother with those? I was under the impression the only reason AoE1 got this treatment is because it wasn't feasible to simply release an updated version like they did with AoE2HD.

Yes, they were announced when AoE DE was.

At Gamescom last year they announced:

- Age of Empires 1: Definitive Edition
- Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition
- Age of Empires 3: Definitive Edition
- Age of Empires 4

So, yes, they will bother with those.

Well, that's something I guess. I admit I really couldn't care less about either of those, but want AoE1 just to have an updated version of it.

Especially if they change the visuals. AoE1 DE looks worse than AoE2 to me, but that's probably just nostalgia.

The AI seems completely broken in the single player campaign. I'm playing the first non-tutorial campaign and in literally the first mission I get spammed clubmen/axemen until I die, and there's no way to build up the resources to defend yourself.

I'm wondering if they even tested the single player. Apparently none of the betas seemed to have the campaigns?

I haven't played the game myself, haven't even watched much footage of it, but from the couple of trailers that came out, I had much the same impressions regarding the music. I usually prefer orchestration over MIDI-style tracks, but in the case of the few samples I listened to, I couldn't get over how different they sounded compared to the tracks I listened to as a kid. Kind of a bummer, to be honest.

Ran perfectly for me for a couple of days, now like many others I suddenly can't open the game without it instantly crashing.

After all the countless issues with HD? Meh, guess I shouldn't be surpised

Didn't AOE1 always do this?

That's supposed to happen if I recall correctly. You can put the settings to easy.

That's a common issue with MS store games for some reason.
You need to install a free app from the store (any app will do) and then you can suddenly play your games again.

Might not last, so you'll have to repeat it lol

That's AOE, alright! It's a feature, not a bug.

I can't remember if I ever played the original AOE campaign, it was good? or not as good as the AOK/conquerors?

Or maybe I just have fondness for the AOK campaigns because of the cutscenes and memeworthy lines

Even on Standard? I didn't even bump it up to Moderate lmao

AOE1 was a impressive for its time and set the foundations for what in my opinion is the best RTS of all time in AOE2.... but yea it had a lot of issues. The campaigns after you get out of the Greek tutorial can be brutally hard.

When you get into a mindset of producing military to defend yourself before focusing on a balanced economy you can still alive long enough to make some progress and quickly overwhelm the AI

Very little in AOE1 compares well to AOE2, if you are expecting AOE2 level gameplay you will be very disappointed. But its still a nice bit of nostalgia for ÂŁ15 if you enjoyed old school RTS

This is so much more fun than pretty much every RTS that came after it. Got a few niggling complaints, mostly about pathfinding and the inability to queue up multiple different things at buildings, but I love the slower pace (it runs really nice at 2X). Most issues I've had are UWP issues, I think.

The keybindings are REALLY weird, though? Why are there separate pause and menu buttons, when they perform the same function? Why is a mouse-driven game requiring players to take their right hand off the mouse to access the menu button, one of the most important buttons in the game? Why are these the exact same key bindings as in Halo Wars and Halo Wars 2?

I'm SO excited to see The First Punic War (a demo campaign!!!!!!!!!) available.

As soon as you start, upgrade to axemen, get a dock set up to grab some fishies, get your guys gathering food.

This is just how the mission works.

It's not an easy game.

Yes. Build first some defence and gather food and focus then on the economy.

The funny thing is that I remember the MP games also starting like this a lot of times. Some jerk building a quick army and then raiding the rest in an attempt for a blitzkrieg.

I guess that's how treaties became a thing lol, to the point where they're a built-in option in AoE 2 HD's online.

haven't played the game yet but after listening to the DE Soundtrack a lot for the past couple of months... I sorta agree? There's some song remakes that sound really close to the originals (like "I Shall Return"/Tango Alpha Bravo, or "Ransom at Ctesiphon"/Hyman's Wrath) but others barely sound anything like the classic ones (IMHO, the most egregious example of this is "Cradle of Civilization"/Sick Sate Rittim, that only takes like the rhythmic base of the MIDI and does something... completely unremarkable with it). Some of the embellishments are also not that good IMO and just detract from the melodic simplicity and memorability of the original compositions that didn't need many extraneous elements.
The fact that the Redbook Audio soundtrack (because the original AoE had two different OSTs) wasn't even considered and that AoE's fucking main theme isn't included (?!) kinda rubs salt in the wound.

But there's also a lot of things I like. I'm quite fond of most of the Rise of Rome remade tracks, to be honest - somehow they just sound closer to the originals than the ones from the base game.

What the FUCK?

So, I booted up the Battle of Mylae mission, which is my second favorite RTS mission of all time.

Something was off when I started the Punic War campaign; the first mission, the Struggle for Sicily, was replaced with a new mission, The Battle for Agrigentum, which isn't bad or anything, though it does send hordes of enemies at you.

Then I played the second mission. It's on a completely different map!!!! Like, the entire layout is different. Instead of being on a continent on the left and having to fight across to the right (with a yellow base on an island to the south), you're on this weird, huge continent that covers the south of the map and reaches up to the middle.

Why the fuck did they do this. I wanted to play Age of Empires missions, not some weird new shit.

I'm really worried that when I beat it, my favorite mission, the Battle of Tunes, is going to be even worse. I couldn't wait to find that map's hidden army, to take on Regulus, and save my navy from certain death early on! WTF. Why would you do this? It would be like remaking Counterstrike and then completely redesigning Dust's layout to the point where it's entirely unrecognizable. Why? Who the fuck thought this was a good idea?

Add new missions if you like, but don't redesign the old ones completely; the entire reason I bought this was to play the old missions on a new computer.

EDIT: I tweeted some pictures. I can't get Shadowplay to take UWP screenshots so the second one is a phone pic. Fuck UWP too. I just want to take screenshots, you dicks.

that's really fucking disappointing. WTH?

EDIT: Maybe you can contact the devs and ask them if that's intentional and they just straight up replaced the original campaign with different maps (while keeping the names) or it's some sort of fumble and they added new maps but forgot to include the original (or whatever). Implausible, I know, but still.

I edited my post with two pictures showing the before and after. These were written as tweets to @ageofempires on twitter.

Now I'm beginning to wonder if the rest of the missions were changed.

That's a bizarre choice. Took a look on their forms to see if there was any info on why that is.

Only found the following in a post about "Classic Mode".

Unfortunately, Definitive Edition campaigns are made using the new scenario format, while also making use of the new objects. Some of the campaigns have received considerable changes (e.g. the Yamato campaign). To play Campaigns in Classic Mode you would need to actually use the original campaigns from 1999.
We will eventually extend the Classic Mode to more areas of the game, such as Multiplayer (temporarily disabled for some underlying issues) and Custom Campaigns, as well as possibly new custom scenarios in the Scenario Editor.

But no explanation as to why there are those "considerable" changes.

*There's apparently a workaround to import the untouched levels into the DE but only with the original assets which defeats the whole purpose of the remaster...

I still can't see how to activate Classic Mode in anything.

They reworked Yamato too? What the fuck. Why? If you wanted to do new shit, why not just add new shit?

Two quick questions my friends - is Classic Mode available in custom maps you make (scenario editor)? And if so, do you still get to keep the expanded population limit?

And in general how does the expanded population limit work? Can I just build houses that take me above the old 50 unit mark? Is there a limit still?

Thank you so much!
