Ehhh I dunno. Like, it was extremely well cast (probably the best cast yet in the MCU), has a lot of unique and/or cool visual and thematic elements to it, but the overall package was less than the sum of its parts for me. I didn't think it was very good.

Just saw it a second time, and think I liked it even better. A few comments/nitpicks/observations:

  • Killmonger's characterization worked better for me the second time, though I'm still sympathetic to leftist criticisms of his role and the film's politics more generally (but also loath to weigh in too much here)
  • god the supporting characters are way better than in pretty much any other MCU solo film, aren't they
  • there's still some distractingly bad CG (Panther and Killmonger's fall into the vibranium mines in the climax) and greenscreen (both ritual combat scenes, T'Challa's second trip to the ancestral plane) work
  • as far as the female supporting cast goes, Nakia is really overshadowed by Shuri and Okoye; I like her character and Nyong'o as an actress, but unlike the other two, I have a hard time recalling a single particularly memorable moment she has in the film, and she just doesn't *feel* as essential to T'Challa's character arc as I'm pretty sure the script intends her to be
  • with only two large-scale setpieces, this might have the least superhero action per se of any of the MCU films. Not a complaint, just an observation
  • I really wish this deleted scene had been kept; W'Kabi's betrayal, and more generally the sheer speed with which the film goes from Killmonger entering Wakanda to seizing power to leading Wakandans in civil war, feels underdeveloped, and a scene or two like this fleshing out how and why an outsider is able to command such loyalty from actual Wakandans would really have helped

That deleted scene was not needed. We already had the convo between Okoye and Nakia. They didn't need to double down on that.

I don't really agree. Yeah, Okoye half-heartedly pays lip service to the idea of loyalty to the throne regardless of who's on it, but she's such an unambiguously heroic character throughout the preceding scenes of the film that it never seems at all plausible that she'll actually follow through on her words. An argument between her and a character who actually *is* morally ambiguous at best, and who actually *does* end up siding with Killmonger, wouldn't have been redundant.

Is there any validity to the directors cut rumor featuring more with Killmonger?

Today I learned that Brookhaven, MS had pastors and people protesting Black Panther getting the theater to not show it possibly. Then I found this video (it's long though) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7jz_a6-o6c

I was told Brookhaven doesn't show a lot of black related movies. My aunt and cousins used to live there (aunt and uncle still does), this is messed up lol. http://m.natchezdemocrat.com/2018/0...ater-protest-about-sharing-gospel-not-racism/

Looks like bad timing. The guy that said he works there (camera guy) doesn't seem to recognize them.

I hope they release at some point an extended edition. Even if it's just 5 extra minutes, it would help to give the third act more breathing room between Killmonger taking over and the final battle.

Anyway, I went to see the movie for a third time. The more I watch the movie and the more I think about it the more I like it. This could actually take over The Winter Soldier and Guardians 1 as my favorite MCU movie.

And damn I can't get over the sick beat in Killmonger's theme.

Why do I have a gut feeling that Nakia is gonna turn heel later on? I know she becomes Malice in the comics, but I feel like the introduction of Storm may push her over the edge if they go for the T'Challa x Ororo ship.

Will Lupita even still be under contract by then? They'd presumably have to 1) close the Fox deal, 2) formally introduce mutants into the MCU (although I suppose they could do that in installments of other series like they did with BP), and 3) establish the connection between T'Challa and Storm

Doesn't it take a year or so to finalize the deal? If so, the deal could be sealed as soon as this December. And as you said, they can slowly introduce the concept of mutants in other films.

Saw it over the weekend. Really liked it. The motivation and characterization for killmonger was a particular highlight. Black panther as a character just felt so fully formed. Plus Chadwick is such an amazing actor. The whole world of wakanda was so neat to be in. Hope the sequels delve into it more.

Special mention to M'Baku. Dude had me rolling.

Yeah, it was kind of a sore spot in the movie. It just stuck out so bad. Movie needed some more time in the oven. I guess this had a shorter turn around time then some of the other big mcu movies.

i love black panther :>

it's been a few days and the legs this movie has in my mind eye is incredible, just such a beautiful flick, the depth, the social commentaries, but also how it remains amazingly fun and beautiful to spectate. *sigh*

.... also i just bought another ticket to go see it again .... i might have a new addiction problem... mmm

Nah, conspicuously dodgy CG/greenscreen is kind of a recurring problem in the MCU. Odin's death scene in Ragnarok has some pretty bad compositing, for instance.

Favorite beat in the film was an understated one kind of; in the Casino fight, when Okoye is fighting Klaw's men, holy shit them drums though

Enjoyed a lot of this. As someone who knows so very little about the character and everything, it was very interesting to see those first beats of Wawaknda and the culture. The movie was also so beautifully lit/shot where you actually saw depth to the faces of all the Black people (something that gets woefully lost at times, particularly Detroit of last year). Some lines are truly stunning and heartfelt, and despite being a movie that knows of its importance, it is relatively sly and carefree about it, very much unlike Wonder Woman that took itself too seriously for me. Yet, when the emotional and thematic and political beats hit, such as the Killmonger stuff (including his last line), it landed with a great force. Hell, the compassion given to him at the end, letting him have his dream of a child in 90s Oakland, is beautiful and heartbreaking. Really well done. Depending on how the year shapes out, I hope it gets a production and costuming nod.

Minor complaint/thought: I kind of wish the CIA agent didn't do anything at the end. I wish he was sidelined. Him, a white CIA officer, helping at the end felt off tonally and thematically. That may just be me in a very early and initial reading of the movie.
Major complaint/thought: these comic book movies continue to have very bad and long third act action set pieces. They go nowhere, have little dynamics, and the inevitable is bound to happen. Hated it in Logan, Thor Ragnarok, and similarly here. I was told this movie avoided this. I was misled.

Edit: Also, if I was Barbara Broccoli, and I didn't have to be strapped to having a British director/crew for a Bond movie, I'd jump on Coogler to helm it.

Edit 2: Just saw that Coogler is maybe working on a film about the Atlanta school cheating scandal, and that's so much better than him working on another franchise.

You should spoiler tag this; this is unmarked spoilers for Black Panther only.

It sure seems like they filmed that with the expectation they would use a city background (as was shown in trailers), just to switch at the last minute.

I liked the movie but didn't love it. I thought Panther was a lot cooler in Civil War. His action scenes in CW were also a lot more satisfying. But I chalk that up to the Russo's being the goats of comic book action scenes.

Also this movie needed more MBJ. Hope marvel finally does a directors cut. I feel like a ton of MBJ's work was cut unfortunately.

Finally Lupita is so goddamn beautiful. Lawd.

Anyone have any podcast suggestions by people who have followed the MCU and actually pay attention?

Was listening to a podcast and I had to stop. One of them said he saw it twice but was questioning why T'Challa was in unfair fights, he thought what he drank before the fights was giving him the powers of the Black Panther. Then all of them we're questioning why Eric was helping Klaue steal the artifact.

LTTP, finally saw it last night. Lived up to the hype, one of the better MCU movies. It brought up several interesting questions about how a nation governs and what their responsibilities are to their neighbors and the duty to share knowledge to better the world. Call me crazy but I really liked Killmonger's character. Sure he was misguided, violence is rarely the answer, but how could the most prosperous and advanced nation in the world allow their continent to be raped and pillaged for centuries? Or their neighbors to be subjected to bondage, disease and extreme poverty?

Jesus. Forest Whitaker's character literally says something like "Now he will be stripped of the power of the Black Panther" when T'Challa drinks the stuff. I really have to question some people's attention spans.

I think it was brought up before, but there aren't enough high quality visual artist teams to support this. More so with the increasing demand for more CG, but less time to work on the film.

On my first watch, I was a little confused about it. Partly cause of ghost dogs accent, I didn't make out that he said stripped of the power, until the second fight with killmonger.

2nd viewing yesterday with packed stadium. 3D showing.

Lowering my review score to a 7/10.

Still an enjoyable movie... but...

  • You can't have a movie about BPanther where T'Challa is the 4th/5th most interesting character.
  • The camera spot for the fight scenes with BPanther are too close.
  • CGI isn't as bad as I thought originally, but it's still not good.
  • Forest Whitaker...I like him as an actor...but I didn't like him in that role.
  • T'Challa's dad...too old.
Currently Civil War is still the best representation of who/what Black Panther is.

The Black Panther movie is a good depiction of the country where Black Panther is from and the people involved in his life.

Your posts always bring this movie to new levels for me.

TChalla in Civil War was revenge driven. Coogler was involved with CW characterization, it makes sense.

In BP, TChaka is avenged and TChalla gets to chill out and really contemplate being a leader for his people. Enter Killmonger, who shakes up his entire notion of being a leader. He already doubted himself when MBaku challenged him and he barely won that.

TChalla has the greatest growth in the entire MCU in only 2 movies. Chadwicks performance is completely underrated.

TChalla in IW will be a different person
