My guess for 2018:

February: Kirby
March: Yoshi
April/May: Pikmin 4
June: SMT V?
July: Smash Switch
September: Fire Emblem
October: New Retro IP
November: Animal Crossing

Then you'll see Pokemon, Metroid, and maybe the new Retro IP in 2019. But I gotta imagine that Retro's game is going to be shown off soon for this year.

I think Pikmin will be one of those Nintendo situations where they'll be like, surprise! a few months before release.

I'm probably in the minority but I'd be way more excited if Sakurai is working on a Kid Icarus Uprising sequel, rather then Smash. I had tons of fun both in single and multiplayer, but I can't play it anymore due to my hands, so a sequel or port using motion control aiming would be awesome.

I hope every single EPD team has a go at making a notable new IP.

I would be ecstatic to see what EPD Tokyo, whom I consider one of the best developers in the whole world, could bring us.

Sakurai seemed like he wasn't going to work on either, but I'd definitely be more excited for this since it's not like Nintendo is going to let Smash drop off for 25 years with or without him. Or really, just. . .anyone work on an Uprising sequel. Please.

I suppose for what it's worth whatever he's working on uses a sci-fi gun as a reference, a new Blade class weapon makes more sense than anything Smash related even if it's more likely neither.

Motion controls would be awesome too, love them in Splatoon and there needs to be a faster/more precise way to aim in this kind of game than scrolling.

Where do you people find this stuff? Also I dunno how being nominated for a comic book award proves they aren't working on DK.

Exactly. What's ironic is just a few posts up, TheMoon calls out this very same line of thinking as setting yourself up for disappointment. Retro's new game could easily still be Donkey Kong.

I'm... much more bullish on the 2018 lineup. Lol.

January - nothing
February - Bayonetta collection
March - Kirby
April - Pikmin
May - Octopath*
June - Yoshi
July - New IP
August - Travis Strikes Again*
September - Smash
October - Fire Emblem, Bayonetta 3
November - Pokémon, trash Mario spinoff
December - Animal Crossing

My prediction is more ambitious. Because Nintendo is slowing down 3DS support, I think they'll try and put out more games for the Switch next year. So here's what I expect.

January: Either nothing or some small digital game
Febuary: Yoshi
March: New first-party Free-to-Start IP
April: Kirby, WarioWare
May: Fire Emblem
June: New IP #1 (digital-only game), New IP #2
July: Mario & Luigi
August: Pikmin 4, Octopath
September: Pokemon
October: Mario Party 11
November: Another Digital game
December: Retro's new game

I haven't been doing as much follow-up and research on Nintendo's first-party talent due to how interconnected some of their internal teams are, so if anyone could link me to a 'Nintendo first-party teams 101 guide' it would be helpful.

By the way, I do this and update it on a relatively regular basis for fun:

I don't see anyone predicting Captain Toad Odyssey, while that seemed like a good in between project while the rest of the team is working on new mechanics for the next mario. Since Mario games are first prototyped heavily the art/level designers have time off, afaik that's why they went with the Captain Toad game in the first place, they could do something similar again.
And way too few people include a Zelda game in their prognosis. I wouldn't count out a Zelda spin off/remake as they are quite consistent with releasing at least 1 zelda game every year (not made by the zelda team persé).

2011: Skyward Sword + Ocarina Of Time 3D + Zelda HD demo (unreleased)
2012: (nothing, but we know part of the zelda team was called in last minute to finish nintendo land for release)
2013: Wind Waker HD + A Link between worlds
2014: Hyrule Warrior legends + Four Swords re-release
2015: Majora's Mask + Triforce Heroes
2016: Twilight Princess HD + Hyrule warriors 3DS
2017: BOTW + DLC

nit-pick: Hyrule Warriors Legends is the title of the 3DS version. The original was just Hyrule Warriors. Four Swords Anniversary came out in 2011. For the anniversary. Hence, Four Swords Anniversary. It made up the celebratory Triforce with OoT3D/SS/FSAnniv.

Yeah true. Was a bit sloppy there. Point remains ofcourse that they have a zelda project out there in some form almost every year (technically even 2012 had Zelda as part of nintendo land).

Yeah, with those demographic statistics (for America), Nintendo really ought to pivot to AC/Pokemon/2D Mario. I'd thought Kart and Splatoon would've done more work in this regard.

Well, guy also said that star fox was schedule for 2014, even when they didn't even had chosen a team to actually make the game yet, didn't he? His idea of game completition is really different for us and even nintendo.

They had an internal team who developed the entire system. They basically outsourced the art (and music).

This seems like the perfect thread for some crazy predictions.

I expect Next Level Games to finally make a Super Mario Strikers sequel to coincide with next years world cup. They havent made a game since Metroid Federation Force which release August 2016. If Mario Strikers sequel were to come out say May/June. Thats nearly 2 years gap between there last game.

I also think Nintendo will try therr hand in grabbing a popular 3rd party IP exclusively for Switch. I think a game like Soul Calibur is perfect. Namco have a good relationship with Nintendo. Also Soul Calibur didnt do as well with the last entry. Im sure Nintendo can capitalise on having a popular 3D fighter exclusively on their system and have the return of Link in the game. Alongside link they can also add Ganondwarf and Sheik to get fans of Zelda to grab the game. Also maybe a few Fire Emblem characters too.

Hey, I have a doubt. Can anyone explain what the General Manager, Deputy Manager and Executive Officer does at Nintendo? I know more or less but not too much.. and besides that, I wasn't able to see it while searching.

General Manager is Miyamoto's old position. It means that the person is in charge of the whole division and generally approve of the projects done.
Deputy General Manager are the people he divies the responsibilities to. They are in charge of certain teams and usually have a bit more of a role in development. They are sort of the forebearers of Nintendo development. They are in charge of the different offices of Nintendo (Kyoto, Tokyo, External)
Executive Officers are members of the old Nintendo guard. Basically people who are senior so that they must be put in an important role but too senior to be guiding Nintendo's direction as Deputy General Managers. They typically have roles in both internal and external development.
Group Managers are what are typically listed as just producer. They superivse and guide the projects.
Group Managers have Deputies too which are generally people they're priming to be their successor. They are listed as co-producer typically

Thank you very much for the insight. So it was actually more or less what I was thinking, with the exception of Executive Officer.

I don't expect a new game every month. SMTV is far off; that won't be a June title. I'm not even sure if it'll be a 2018 title. Kirby is a Spring game (my guess is April). We haven't heard of Pikmin 4 in a long time. I have no idea when to expect that. Pikmin 3 and Hey Pikmin are both Summer titles, and I don't see why they would change that. It could very well to April/May of course.

Kirby is listed as a spring 2018 game in the recent release schedule. That combined with the fact that Battle Royale isn't coming out in Europe until January makes me think Star Allies will release later than people think. I think January and February will be quiet months.

PlayerEssence made a video and did some predictions for 2018 games. He had Retro making a new IP, NLG doing Luigi's Mansion 3 and Tantalus remaking/remastering Baten Kaitos from the Gamecube.

Where are people getting all these "New IP#1 / New IP#2" from? Have Nintendo said they're working on new IP?

I just don't see whose going to be making these considering that outside of the Zelda, Mario, Mario Kart and Pikmin teams there are very few studios with console experience nevermind the ability to make new IP unless people mean digital only mini games?

Nintendo said they have several new IP in the works, and implied the nature of at least two.

One of them is Aonuma working on a game with a thief as a protagonist (I really don't expect this to be ready in 2018, though), and the other is stated to be decidedly unlike most video games in a similar vein to Brain Age (though not in the sense of it being a Brain Age esque title per se).

Who knows who's working on them, but they're there. I really think this undersells the amount of teams with console experience, though. Several more of them at least dabbled with spinoffs on the Wii U.

I think you're taking his quote way out of context. He simply said if he had the chance to make a new game, he'd make a game around living life as a thief.

He worded it rather oddly and also stated at one point that Nintendo wanted him to work on a new IP and Zelda at the same time and he was a bit worried how he was going to juggle it, though.

I'm pretty sure if he's got Nintendo asking for him to work on Zelda and a new IP at the same time and that's what he wants that it means he's going in. Barring him being unable to stretch himself and any staff he can scrape up as thin as he needs to, of course.

Miyamoto has said, in the past, that he cant talk about his hobbies because people will start speculating. I assume the same extends to the other producers at NIntendo. especially for moments like this. I think he was given the go-ahead to talk about this for a reason

Good points. For some reason, though, when I read the quote, I initially thought of a Shiek game set within OoT or around there. It would be within the Zelda universe he knows so well, but Shiek is more akin to a Ninja/thief. Either way, all I want is a OoT remake for the 20th anniversary next year.

I wonder if 2018 will be "Year of the 2D Platformer" for Switch.

Obviously, Yoshi and Kirby are coming in 2018. But there's a strong possibility of a Tropical Freeze port. Historically, every single DKC game has been ported to another system including DKC Returns and Donkey Kong Jungle Beat.

There's also the possibility of 2D Mario in 2018. Perhaps something related to New Super Mario Bros or Super Mario Maker?

This is just pure speculation on my part.

note that the "wording" you're talking about comes from a translation. something I often see when talking about JP dev (specifically Nintendo) quotes. getting too hung up on minute details in wording is a bad idea for translated interview questions.

I suppose, but it still doesn't negate the fact that Nintendo is actively encouraging him to work on something else on top of Zelda. If both Aonuma and Nintendo want it, then the only thing potentially stopping them is how far resources might be stretched out.

What if Aonuma made a Dark Souls type of game? Lol

Nintendo said they're making new IP's. You have teams who can work on multiple IP's like the Splatoon guys doing that and Animal a Crossing or Mario Kart guys doing ARMS. Expect to see more of that this gen with everyone focusing on one system.

I'm legit ready for a Captain Toad 2. Idk if Nintendo will make a sequel to Odyssey or just make another 3D Mario game for the Switch, but I can see them squeezing in another smaller game in between and I hope that's Captain Toad 2.

Captain Toad came from 3D World and there's not really anything from Odyssey that I'd think they would make a spinoff of.

Captain Toad for 2018!

In regards to Smash Bros., I wonder if the development approach on whatever comes to Switch will be different from what we expect, even in terms of Sakurai's involvement.

The combined factors of Nintendo potentially wanting to recoup more of their investment on Smash Wii U, the development's effect on Sakurai's health, a possible desire to release Smash on the platform sooner than later, and a previously successful collaboration with Namco on the series could all influence the direction. I wouldn't be surprised to see more weight placed on Namco or other development partners with Sakurai in perhaps a supervisory position, with a Smash project that is more of a "legacy" collection package or something closer to a games-as-service model rather than a ground-up effort.

Crossing my fingers for big new IPs from

Retro Studios
Next Level Games
Aonuma
Monolith Soft (That action medieval game!)
Platinum Games (Cause we still haven't seen their game yet for Switch)

and in my wildest dreams Nintendo would form/acquire a new western developer and create a new franchise as well. I know they said they were interested in acquisitions, but we all know Nintendo doesn't really buy console game developers unless under a VERY specific case like Monolith Soft.

For Nintendo's sake, I hope they don't wait too long to release a Smash Bros game.

Smash Bros will have a significant impact on Nintendo's amiibo business and their upcoming online subscription business.

Speaking about Smash Bros and amiibo...isn't there a very large amount of amiibo which AREN'T compatible with Super Smash Bros now? Like, more than half of them being incompatible, especially the ones currently on store shelves? What do they do with those?

So with Odyssey out I don't think we know what anyone in EPD is working on other than some DLC and helping out on non-EPD projects/mobile. Lots of opportunity there, let's see if they can live up to it.

I'd guess they have a proper multiplayer game in the works by now in the spirit of 3D world. Nintendo have enough styles of Mario platformer that they could launch one a year if they are able to.
