The best part of Rising is they play the narrative deadly serious until you kill your rival, at which point they kick over the fourth wall and burn it. All of a sudden you've got security guards reading waifu magazines, Raiden getting really pissed off that the dog won't shake hands with him and then a battle against an anarcho-capitalist sociopath on top of a crashed Metal Gear. He emerges from a Peace Walker like pod and then you fight him to a remix of the Peace Walker theme!

While politics have caught up with it somewhat, it was still pretty remarkably relevant at the time. It's one of the few games to have a boss with a coherent political ideology (to the extent a shitshow anarcho-capitalism is coherent, lol) and compared to the kinda wishy-washy post modernism of the core Metal Gear series, it's a really sharp contrast. Armstrong definitely anticipates the vulgarity and strongman elements of Trump's public image as well as being an early marker for anime twitter nazis. As much as it's fashionable for people to shit on DmC I love that two meaty character action games with the guts to approach contemporary political themes emerged in early 2013. I don't think we're going to get something like that again for a long time, especially if the next DMC is a reactionary narrative step away from DmC.

I think this is also important: Metal Gear Rising is no More Heroes 3. Wear your enemy down with a barrage of light and strong attacks until they're stunned then bisect them in slow motion, all the while hacking through a postmodernist/superflat narrative and a bunch of dark player counterparts with their own image themes. Suda should really give Platinum a shot at that series.

My GOTG 7

Was mindblown, one of the first games i also played with my headset, best OT ever!
Was about to give up when I met the first boss, but than I discovered parry and a whole new game opened up ^_^

Need to play it again some time

Parrying is the most addictive shit ever. It's so crispy and satisfying.

Anyone else beat all those VR Missions? Christ, I think they were the hardest thing I've ever done in a game.

Then they added more as DLC and ruined my 100%

What a coincidence, I had the game on backlog and started playing it yesterday, on PC. I'm enjoying it so far and playing with everything on max I think the game still holds up, despite some camera issues.

Loved what I had played but went on hiatus after a bit. Tried to get back into it but for some reason can't seem to play it due to the lagginess/stuttering of trying to play it on a 4K TV through PC.

Probably my favorite Platinum game. I'd buy it again in an instant if it ever ended up on PS4 or Switch.

I don't see why Konami would cancel a sequel considering all they have to do is license it to Platinum and collect a check.

The most exhilarating moment of the Xbox 360 generation is during the first boss encounter, catching the Metal Gear's big sword tentacle thing, while the RULES OF NATURE chorus kicks into high gear. It's power fantasy moonshine. 200 proof, unfiltered, participate at your own risk. MGR keeps escalating the set pieces, but like many drugs, there is nothing like the first hit.

One of the greatest action games ever. It totally "gets" how to hype up a player and make them feel awesome without resorting exclusively to cutscenes and QTEs.

Greatest intro of all time.

I'll admit that Senator Armstrong still hasn't been topped in terms of final boss battles.

Nothing beats the pure, unadulterated adrenaline after eventually beating that dude at 2am on a school night.

Metal Gear Rising is the best Metal Gear game since MGS3.

Shame it'll never get a sequel

I would give my left nut for a remaster. The sequel ship sailed I think which makes me sad.

Incredible game. The Platinum Trophy I was most proud of obtaining.

Once you learn the timing for the parry this game opens up to fantastic levels of insanity. One of the best action games every made.

This was my favorite song from the soundtrack.

I don't even enjoy Platinum's efforts that much, but Vanquish and this would be "Day One" material if released on current gen systems.

Not surprisingly, these two and Nier are their less personal titles, however they're the only ones I've invested serious time in.

PS: On the bosses' discussion, I think Bloodborne is on top (considering also the quantity), while some parts of Nioh an DS III would belong too on that recent years' best category.

One of my most memorable gaming experiences ever. Armstrong was a bastard to beat, just because I couldn't figure out diagonal slicing. No health pack drops for the entire fight, still managed to pull it off. Hype as hell!

Game has an issue with TVs where it defaults to 24Hz. You need to force Borderless Windowed mode - look at the PCGamingWiki article for a guide.

Very possibly my favorite action game of all time. Still p[lay it through about once a year. I adore Metal Gear and Platinum, and good lord this could not have been a better combination of the 2. When the lyrics kick in on boss fights it still drives my hype through the roof every time.

I love how all Revengeance threads are full of character quotes and lyrics. I don't even like that kind of music but it was a revelation while I played the game. I was browsing Reddit like a whole year ago in some unrelated Subreddit (like League of Legends or some shit) and one of the comments was something like "nanomachines, son" followed by replies like "played college ball, you know" and I just couldn't stop laughing.

I don't even know how I did it but I managed to get my classmate to watch a YouTube video of all the cutscenes of the game which was like over two hours. I feel so bad thinking about it now. I have no idea why I did that; she doesn't even like games that much. But she did it and we're still good friends so it couldn't have been that bad.

Top tier boss fights, probably the best in the genre. Combat system could have been a bit deeper, but what is there works absolutely perfect and considering the short development time Platinum had for the game, they did pretty good job overall.

It is criminal that there hasn't been an MGR2: Devastruction.

I want a sequel so bad. Cutting shit in this game was just too damn satisfying. To think it's been half a decade already...
