Still in the first chapter and enjoying my time with it. However, I can't remember any sort of rumble, while I have the option turned on in the menu. Is it only used in a couple of rare situations or just not implemented?

Huh, now that you mention it I hadn't noticed rumbling at all either, weird.

Is all the music reused from other games?

Was looking for the music for this game on YouTube and it just led me to Fortune Street and Dragon Quest Heroes. I don't mean remixes, I mean ripped right from those games.

Somewhat related, but I've only played 2 Dragon Quest games (IV DS and IX DS) and yet I actually recognized a few songs like the battle theme and the first town theme.

That's a good question... I'm not well versed in DQ spinoffs so I wouldn't recognize remixes originally made for those, but the town music does sound pretty much identical to the one in the DS remake of IV... It'd explain the lack of a soundtrack release.

Various item jingles and victory fanfares as well, but I'm not familiar enough with the series to know if those are always re-used.

But there's a few I can't find. I don't think the town themes are re-used from anywhere, the town theme is from IV, but I don't think it's the DS version. Likewise, Chapter 2's town has a remix in Heroes as well, but it's not the same version. I think they made new remixes for towns because the towns have that extra layer added when you finish the chapter.

It could be though, rips I find on YouTube have the distinct "DS" quality to them. The original masters probably sound a lot better.

In chapter 2... where the fuck can I get wood/lumber? I've been running around for over an hour now wasting my time. Can't do shit until I can make the big chest. Can't progress the story either.

WOW this is frustrating.

Not the first trees. There are palm trees in the blue teleport area. Chop trunks too, and put palm trees in your base : after 2 nights you can chop them again to get your wood and repeat. It's a fast way to get a good stock without wandering in this hostile island.

I'm currently in chapter 2, too. As usual, I delay as much as possible my progress to test ideas with the new recipes, I love to discover new types of rooms by myself for eg.

Just seen that the optional challenges for this game have been altered so that the time-based challenges are now just to collect a certain number of items instead. Thank god, this game is not suited to rushing at all and even though it was an only an optional objective it was just not a very good one.

Guys, I found my perfect gaming zone. A couple of nights ago I was pretty buzzed -- just enough smoke in me (which is to say barely any at all) -- and I settled into bed to play DQ Builders.

I put on my headphones and started this extended version of Secunda:

...and I just played and played. It set the perfect tone. I did a quest or two, and then went exploring. I collected things, I discovered things, I started replacing walls and floors in my town and rearranging everything to my liking and really making it my own. The music put me in the perfect mood to take things slowly and intentionally, and it was such an enjoyable experience. I can tell I will have many more nights like that one, and I honestly can't wait.

What kind of "zones" do you guys create for yourselves when playing DQ Builders? Do you ever listen to your own music? Do you play exclusively on the TV and enjoy it that way? Do you rush through quests as fast as possible to make it more like an RPG?

Personally I like to play this after coming back from the gym. I do whatever chores I have left, take a shower, get in bed and relax playing Builders until I get sleepy.

This is my first time playing the game after actually having played through mainline DQ entries and I'm appreciating the callbacks a lot! The dream flashback with the couple that used to be at the castle in DQ1 was nice, and I noticed the town they're in looks identical to the castle town too.

Ok, just heading through the blue teleporter, great stuff so far. Do we know how far into the game the sabrecat you can ride is, or is it something super-obvious that I've missed :D

You get him only in terra incognita (free mode)
Ah, thanks!

I love the freeform nature of this. Upon discovering a rock face worth mining, the first thing I did was build a cabin as a forward base. And then spent an hour adding a crafting table, nice rushes on the floor, a bench outside to admire the view... Spent 20 times as long getting it just right as I did mining ore and making armour, which was my reason to be there!

I'm hoping to get a copy of this this weekend, so I was wondering if anyone could answer this. On the official description it says: "Exclusive content: gather special materials with the Great Sabrecub to unlock retro customization options, including the Dragon Quest Game Pak" does that mean the original Dragon Quest/Warrior is playable in the game?

Haha nah, it means that it includes a new set of pixelated blocks to build sprites from the NES games and the literal DQ1 cartridge.

omg chapter 4 is amazing

After doing a cool survival free for all intro, I then spent 2 hours painstakingly rebuilding the castle with new floors and new walls and some new rooms

I can't believe how much I'm loving this game. It's become one of my favorite games on the Switch and I'm only on Chapter 2. I could never really get into Minecraft, but something about this game just hits all the right notes for me. It's like Zelda + Minecraft with light RPG elements and objectives, and I'm so glad I gave it a chance.

Just for fun, I wanted to build an SMB3 style Mario.

I definitely listen to my own music playing this game, and I tend to lean more towards chill/ambient vocal tracks. It just sets the tone for a nice, relaxing gameplay session. So far I've played exclusively on the TV but I could see myself playing handheld at some point. There are times when I do multiple quests in succession, and other times when I stop doing quests altogether to redesign my town or individual rooms. I love that I can basically set the pace of the game myself.

So this game seems pretty neat. I'm about to pull the trigger. Are there dungeons to explore in the world?

Im only on the second chapter but there seems to be caves, optional side challenges and random treasure chests dotted about. I don't know if id say that there is 'dungeons' but the open world does feel meaningful and populated with stuff to do for sure.

My wife and I love this game. I'm so glad she did because I've loved DQ sine the NES days and now we're both super excited for 11 as well. We're on PS4 right now though and are very very close pulling the trigger on the Switch. Only a matter of time as the lineup is getting such love and attention with fantastic titles like this!

Is there anything different on the Switch version(bar DQ1 exclusive items) than the PS4/Vita version?
One of the challenges in each world changed from completion time to unique item collection (150 in world 1 for example). Which is a big improvement imo given how leisurely most people play these games.

I can't believe how relaxing this game is. I'm just making little cabins as forward bases all over the place while stockpiling materials, the rhythm of it is really engaging.

So glad I tried the demo, funny how some demos put me off, some leave me feeling like I enjoyed it but don't need any more, and some like this one meant that I immediately bought it at full price where otherwise I would have written it off as 'not for me'.

Finally made it to chapter 2 again last night, which is where I dropped the Vita version in order to play some mainline DQ (and then wait for this version), and damn, this is such an exciting change of pace! There's a sense of urgency right from the start that simply wouldn't be possible without making you "start from scratch", so I'm totally fine with that design decision.

I greatly enjoyed the chill pace of Cantlin, but this completely different dynamic in Ch2 puts what you've learned to test right away and makes me pretty excited for future ones. I love when games can put a spin to their formula by just changing the way their challenges are structured.

It really is kinda magical. I remember back before its original release I was baffled at the idea of Minecraft x DQ, I hadn't beaten any DQ game because they never grabbed me but saw the demo like a day before launch and said hey, why not... The next day I bought it full price on Vita, haha.

I'm glad they changed that. Having a time limit challenge in a sandbox game is so dumb

My inner siege engineer has me building the most insane killboxes I can imagine for the handful of monsters foolish enough to try and storm my city. So proud. :D

In the first chapter I built a bit outside the town area (my towers). Don't do that. When the boss spawned, all outside parts were removed (imagine my face). Some of my invicible shields were removed too. Anw you only need 1 of those shields to defeat the boss but I was still a bit angry haha ! (All removed parts are given back after the fight)

I'm more careful with my second town :-P

I built a solid 3 block high wall around my entire town out of obsidian before the first boss fight. Nothing could penetrate it.

Chapter 2 is way harder tho.

Stupid question because I'm still in chapter 1: Can you actually do sustainable farming (getting both cooking material and seeds to replant ad infinitum) or are those plots just for looks?

Yes you get more then what you plant in return. 6x6 field = 180 potatoes. 360 butterbeans, 180 wheat etc

I spent an absurd amount of time in chapter one, built a huge walled town that I loved and managed to do the challenges without even knowing half of them existed. I did look up how to do the water garden though

Was sad to leave my NPCs behind!

Still in Chapter 1 but really enjoying this. More so then I did Minecraft. It's the rpg element I think that works for me and gives the game more structure and context that is just simply not there when it comes to Minecraft's survival mode. I just hope this enjoyment last.

So I probably shouldn't get this if I don't enjoy building at all right? Minecraft didn't interest me at all.
