So this game is bad? I was so hyped but I had a date yesterday and couldn't pick it up.

I love DW so I was gonna buy it no matter what, now I'm not sure.
Some like it, some don't from what I have seen. The worst part about it is the performance seems like. If they could fix that then I think people would enjoy it more.

Hopefully they end up creating a new engine for these games. It is long overdue for one and they pushed it into its limit that it is starting to break.

Read through the thread? Opinions are mixed.

Performance isn't really an issue to me, I don't have a Pro. From what I read the issues are with frame rates and such right? I can live with those issues, as long as the game doesn't crash constantly. So I don't need to be too concerned right?

Did you play it on PS4 or PS4 Pro? I was playing it on Pro and it was even worse with the boost mode enabled. It was better with it off but still disappointing. There was someone on GAF who also mentioned it being better to him-- he played the American version. Maybe they improved it over the Japanese one? Regardless, it runs at a pretty much rock-solid 60 FPS on PC for me so I'm not really interested in finding out.
Just a standard PS4 playing the North American release. I haven't tried it on anything else.

please do yourself a favor and make sure to sell the shit you get from battles.....I had over 500k worth of salable garbage lol, I now own nearly all the houses and have a Level 53 horse......thing fucking books it and has a ton of stamina.

Buy a horse immediately to start leveling it up and getting a much faster and better experience. I can usually go from waypoint to waypoint actually faster than the smaller maps in old DW games.......this isn't even a level 53 red hare either....just a standard walnut horse.

alright, back to work for me......will post more or respond at lunch

The game hasn't crashed on me and I haven't heard anyone else have any issues with crashes. So I can't say that the game won't crash at all 100%, but it's nowhere near an unstable crash-fest.

Here's the thing. I played for just under an hour but I could see glimpses of something good. I liked the animations. I liked how the clothes blew in the wind and how they got dirty. I liked the lighting. I was surprised to see a half decent amount of options like ambient occlusion, tesellation and global illumination settings (not that putting everything on Low and playing at 4K helped, it was still sub-30fps). I (generally) liked the combat although the part where you play as Cao Cao and fight Zhou Cang the button prompts on screen were wrong for the RB+A and RB+B. Took me 5 minutes to work out what was going on. I didn't mind the emptiness of the maps as DW games have always suffered a little from empty areas. It was just the performance. It was excruciating. If it's patched to run better I'll give it a second look, but not for £55. No way.

I'll say that Dynasty Warriors 9 provides a great foundation for Omega Force to build upon. There are a lot of QOL gameplay improvements that would benefit the game tremendously. Hopefully they're thinking about some form of co-op down the line, whether online or local. Thinking of Ghost Recon Dynasty Warriors 9 would benefit greatly from that style, especially with how missions are structured.

..... where are you seeing these magical positive impressions, outside of a handful on this forum here and there? All I'm seeing everywhere is that this game is pretty poor.
I'm definitely holding off to see what they do with a patch or two, and even then... I might just skip this and wait for 10. First time I've done that in a LOOOONG time for a muso game.
"Positive impressions from you guys"..ie people in this OT.
its right there in what you quoted.

Heads up: The PC version is 10% off on Green Man Gaming, plus you can use the "FEB20" voucher to take another 20% off, bringing the price down to $43.19 USD. Thank goodness I didn't pre-order at that ridiculous $70 price.

Only played a little so far and performance isn't great on my laptop's 7700HQ/1060. This is their flagship series, not some spinoff, so I hope Koei actually work on improving performance in this game.

A lot of the new English voices are horrendous. Is the voice actor change a result of the strike? Because I'm really hoping they bring back most of the old cast. I also wish they'd finally update some of their sound effects. It feels like they're using the same samples as in the PS2 days.

I'l write more later, but as a long time musou fan. Im really digging it. The music, the combat, the gameplay quest loop. Feels like you're working towards something bigger along the way.

The Koei tecmo tweets said Xbox and PC patched are being looked into. So yeah only ps4 patch for now.

I might bite at 43 dollars on green man gaming.

what is that 4th bar below stamina? I don't have that on my character and hes level 32.........

Also is it seriously only a PS4 patch? I'm going to be really upset of Tecmo ignores the xbox base
Patching on different platforms probably requires different work for different hardware. They are looking into patching the Xbox One and PC versions.

Honestly as someone who hasn't played any DW games, or any musou game outside of renting Drakengard 1 in 2003 and playing a demo of Dragon Quest Heroes II, the game is strangely appealing to me. I love the character designs, the CG art is beautiful, the opening is beautiful, and the combat looks fun.

Unfortunately it seems like this installment favored a "quantity over quality" design mentality.

DW games all get upgraded versions right? Maybe I'll wait for that, or perhaps they might design DW10 differently enough for me to want to buy it. I just can't see myself playing a game like this if it has a forgettable story mode with weak cutscenes.

iirc Dynasty Warriors typically has an XL version released roughly 10 months or so after the original game.

To give a more detailed answer, in the past, the XL (Xtreme Legends) versions is an expansion pack which includes new officers, new modes, 2 EX moves, a new level cap, and basically a spin-off of the original. CE (Complete Edition) is DW base game + XL expansion pack. In regions outside of Japan (and PS3 versions), I think they always just bundled them and released it as the CE editions (according to google at least).

for DW8 the differences in the release was a bit over a year.

They've only released CEs for games that got ported to different systems (So, DW8 had one because the original was a PS3 game, then it got ported to PS4 alongside the release of XL). It's not really their standard practice. And the XL is just an expansion to the original game that only will have the full content if you have the original game too.

They could change that format if this game's sales are catastrophically low though.

Edit: Looking at some past info, they actually did that with Dynasty Warriors 6. There was only a DW6 "Special" which was the base game with extra content, rather than a standalone XL release.

They've only used the CE moniker once. I remember they used to use Ultimate more than Complete Edition.

The map in this game is massive. I ran in one direction for several minutes and I barely made a dent in it

Did you see the development map test video Koei Tecmo released? It used time-lapse to condense the whole thing down to about 24 minutes, but going from the northeast corner to the southwest corner of the map, it takes about an hour and forty minutes on foot.

I have an odd question that I seem to be unble to resolve.

For some reason this game is not running full scale on my tv screen, there some inch left on both side and top that isnt filled (with the game screen).

There's no option to change the screen size in the game itself. It is ONLY this game that has said issue. Also I'm on the normal ps4 (not pro).

Am I the only one with this issue?

I didnt see the video but I believe it. It just feels weird in a Dynasty Warriors game. Lol

Jim Sterling stated that he had this issue on his Jimpressions video.

Seems to me that it's overscan protection, but man does it look ugly. It's most likely running in a slightly lower resolution.

Enjoying the combat a little more as Zhang Jiao. Maybe Liu Bei just sucks.

Frame rate has definitely improved, though it still tanks in some scenarios. I don't think Koei will ever learn how to do fire that doesn't cause the game to chug.
so its fire that causes it again..... Maybe they should have the Ni-Oh guys teach them some optimization tricks.

Agreed, except replace Koei with Omega Force (as they are the developers) while Koei is only the publisher. A huge example of these issues is in the Warrior All-stars if you use a PS4 Pro. PS4 runs just fine from what I hear, but PS4 pro version is a mess in terms of Frame-rate and Pacing of it all. The game never got a patch in general which is a shame since I loved the game. It almost ruined the experience for me, but my enjoyment outranked it.

At least they are taking this game seriously with the feedback. It would make sense though being as Dynasty Warriors is their main and major franchise. If this somehow completely bombed with no support, I can see at least the main line franchise dying off. Side ones will still be good (hyrule warriors, One piece warriors, insert name here warriors) as they actually get support in terms of patches and run great right from the start.

Technical issues aside the game still has moments that impress me like climbing Mt. Song or riding up through Hu Lao Gate.

If they can refine their open world design (and improve the technical side) I could see it being difficult to go back to stage based musous.

Ergh. People weren't kidding when they said Action mode on base PS4 makes the game look even more ugly. It also does still tank when fighting a lot of enemy units. Even worse with this new patch they seem to have adjusted the way the units are rendered on screen. The game always dropped the amount of frames on units at a distance, but they seemed to have made that distance much closer, which results in you having enemy units running in slow motion mere meters from you. It's totally offputting.

Really regret not buying the PC version, but I don't want to double dip. Sigh.

Edit: Regarding the units thing, I actually think they've dropped the depth of field in general. Some trees can look really freaking ugly before they've fully rendered in.. As for the Action mode, it definitely seems like they've lowered the resolution which exacerbates a lot of the aliasing issues and generally makes the game look even more ugly.

I read reviews on steam and fortunately saw it runs well on 1080 Ti, whereas people with 980's and similar were getting bad performance.

My monitor is 1440p but with a 1080 Ti it runs 60 fps ultra and apart from popin it looks pretty good, nice foliage - and most importantly I REALLY like the new combat system. I'm really pleased with it, I had alrady watched a bunch of videos on the game before buying it including Jim's so I knew that it wasnt going to look as good as say AC origins.

Shame it looks and runs poorly on PS4 it seems, by far my favorite combat system of their games including Hyrule & DQ Heroes.

You mean action mode? Movie mode is what it originally looked like and performed.

I'm playing this now on base Xbox One and it seriously looks like a 360 game. Framerate is bad at some points. Combat is fine for me, it was my biggest worry.

I don't own the game, but check your display area settings on PS4. If the edge of the game screen matches the box of the display area settings, then that's most likely the issue. It's using that setting to determine the size of the screen. Just increase the size of the box to fit the whole screen on your display. (99% of games don't do this and only use the settings to change ui at most)

This game is at times New Jank City but I can't help but love playing it. This series is my go to for zoning out and just roaming the open world fighting fuckers without stage breaks is making it super dangerous on my clock, hours are passing by without me realizing it. Is this the direction I would have taken the series if it were up to me? Probably not, but I'm glad they put this effort out there because I honestly quite like it. If it were a more polished affair with a bigger budget behind it and more time in the oven this could have been something really great for the series, which it still can but that's up to KT if they choose to iterate on this idea in DW10, polishing and improving on it or if they decide to go back to the classics after this entry's reception. All in all though I am pleased with the game.

I finished the Anti-Dong Zhuo scenario tonight. Man this game is fun, and the PS4 patch definitely had a noticeable improvement on the performance end. I hope similar patches are on the way for the Xbox One and PC.
