We went for a different style because we've been imagining how a true HD successor could look like with Japanese design in mind and a world that's more dynamic and alive than the classic games. The Dragon's Trap remake art style doesn't work for our game because Monster Boy has a more complex map setup. Instead of mostly running planes we broke with various conventions of the classic games for a more dynamic, responsive and very direct action platformer. Don't believe me though, play it when it's out. You'll see :)
We're not getting any Xbox One port at all? Or only digital? I bought the last game day one :(
I've been following this project since it was first announced. I'm really impressed with how much you've improved the graphics (I would still have bought it even back when people thought it looked like "a cheap mobile game"). I just love how colourful it is, in true 90's fashion. That's my biggest gripe with the Dragon's Trap remake. It looks beautifully drawn, but the colours are more subdued.
Do you think it's still possible to find another publisher for a physical European (and/or Asian) release? What strikes me as odd is that this is a game based on a Japanese IP, developed by Frenchmen and exclusively distributed as a physical copy in North American by a German publisher.
Absolutely, it's much more in line with the latest Monster World games on Genesis. Still - Monster Boy is going even further than that. Really cool stuff in the final game. There's a reason it took 4 years, not only because of art ;)Sounds like much of the inspiration came from monster world v. Which sounds great.
Wonderboy 3 is fantastic, but not the level design. Wonderboy in monster world had way more involved dungeons, but mwv is the one that felt truly complex, with dungeons on par with stuff like zelda.

Yes, Monster Boy really deserves an own identity - it's the first new game in the Monster World series since over 2 decades. We're using dynamic lightning, shadow, shaders and all kinds of stuff to beam you right into the world. You'll not watch it as a painting, the picture will pull you right into the world. I'm sure you'll love it.I think it's a good thing you went for a different style regardless, to separate it from the other game as much as possible.
We'll have music remixes of Wonder Boy 1 (Arcade), Wonder Boy 2 Monster Land, MW2 and 3. Of course we also have original new tracks. Over 40 tracks in the game!Any word on remixes of music from past wonderboy games? The way certaim songs keep popping up among games in the series was one of my favorite touches.
While Dragon's Trap was a very enjoyable remake and definitely worth its price if only for the visuals, I have different expectations from Monster Boy since it seems to be bigger game, with a much more developped level design and bigger scale overall. It's also in development since ages, I first remember hearing about it as Flying Hamster 2 and that was like four or five years ago.

You'll have a lot to look forward to ;)Ill freaking lose it if i hear a remix of the underwater/ice tundra themes from mw3. Those songs sounded so haunting and epic. Made the tundra and ocean seem vast.
Hm...maybe we add it ;)
Thank you very much!Summer is a bit later than I had hoped (was hoping for Spring) but the physical releases make it worthwhile. Will get both.
The art design is fine, but I just really like the earlier cover art much more. Oh well...This is the cover they were using last year. I think it looks better, but I don't think the new one is bad either. The character art is fine.
Shit. I wanted a physical copy of this to add to my Wonder Boy collection, but as a European, I now have to choose between trying to import at likely double the retail price, or wait for a physical release in Europe that might never happen.
Shipping costs from the US are almost always really high, and then customs duty and 25% of the game's value in tax on top of that, and an extra 15 dollars of fees from the Swedish postal service.Double the retail price? Where the hell are you buying your games? I'm also in europe and It never gets close to double the price for me and i often order games from the US and Canada

That's assuming the parcel is stopped at the border, though. Sometimes you get lucky.
No, but I might for this game, if I decide to go for it. Thanks!I often order at videogamesplus.ca, the shipping cost are low and the prices too (thanks to the CAD change rate)
did you tried there?
Bit of a warning for VGP. Don't pay with a credit card. They tend to get your info stolen. Paypal is a safer bet.I often order at videogamesplus.ca, the shipping cost are low and the prices too (thanks to the CAD change rate)

Yeah it's a well known thing in the Canadian era community.
I got my copy today and I must say, I really appreciate that the Switch cart is designed like an SMS cart. I kind of wish the reverse cover was the SMS box art, but the little grid at the bottom is enough I guess. lol
Oh whoops. lolYou got Dragon's Trap today? Congrats! However, please don't confuse it with Monster Boy - which is a new game and will release later This Summer.
Nevertheless, both games are based on the Wonder Boy series so you're very welcome in this thread, too :)
It's kinda annoying where for Switch boxart instead of re-composing the image they just crop it down to size -_-
Dragon's Trap on modern consoles was a remake of Dragon's Trap from almost 30 years ago and was made by a different team.

This game is made with the help of one of the series most important figure and serves as an actual sequel to Wonder Boy V Monster World III. Dragon's Trap was Wonder Boy III (yes, I know confusing.)
Thanks for the complete rundown and nice write-up. Didn't know about Bock being involved with the DT remake. There just seems to be a lot of confusion as to how related these two games since last week when the physical switch version as been announced, putting a big spotlight on the game.Just to clarify and speak up for Wonderboy: The Dragon's Trap since you mentioned that Monster Boy has "one of the series most important figures" at the helm -- Wonderboy: The Dragon's Trap also has a similarly significant and noteworthy developer behind it. Wonderboy: The Dragon's Trap (remake) is by Omar Cornut, perhaps better known as "Bock." Bock is THE patriarch of Sega Master System hacking. He is, hands down, the world's authority for anything and everything SMS. If you had to choose a single developer who wasn't Ryuichi Nishizawa to handle a Wonderboy game (with due respect), it'd be Bock. Bock has been taking apart and disassembling Wonderboy for over 20 years now. You might have heard of one of Bock's other infamous Projects - Meka, considered one of the very best SMS emulators that has been in development since 1997. Additionally, Bock owns and runs SMS! Power, which is the central hub for all things SMS development, rom hacking, and game preservation.
Bock is to Wonderboy, what Christian "Taxman" Whitehad and Simon "Stealth" Thomley are to Sonic the Hedgehog. He is to SMS history, what DRX is to Megadrive history.
We aren't just lucky to have two amazing wonderboy releases in 2 years after decades of silence, but they have literally coming from the two best sources humanly possible.
2017/2018 has been an amazing time to be a Wonderboy fan.
EDIT: And in case anybody gets any ideas about rivalries between Bock's group and FDG, I see them communicate on twitter with each other all the time. I think FDG was excited as hell for Dragon's Trap and vice versa. These groups were fans of wonderboy primarily, remember.

That's cool trivia to know. It did feel rather accurate when I played it last year.Just to clarify, he was more than involved, he's the driving force behind it.
the DT remake is wholly his baby, something he'd been working towards for decades. Bock tore WB3 on the SMS apart, to the point where the DT remake features the exact same drop logic for items. That's not to say he didn't have a team, but as much as you can say any one game is a single person's creation, the DT remake is Bock's.
Ahh okay, good news in that case! :)Its not the final comp. Just a preview made to work in small Image sizes
Rename it Monster Boy: Wonderboy Reborn. It'll be fine. Thanks Krejlooc for the summary! There's a lot of confusion about the various Wonder Boy releases (including different game titles) in the past and we're not helping much by naming a new Monster World game 'Monster Boy' ;)
Out of all the delightfully confusing aspects of this series, my favorite is that Dragon's Curse (the PCE/TG16 version of Dragon's Trap) was called Adventure Island in Japan. Full fucking circle. For those wondering about the confusing history of Wonder Boy, Hardcore Gaming 101 has good writeups on the games: http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/wonder-boy/ (multi-page)
Yes there are two different games both called "Wonder Boy III". And that's without the different ports of each of those!
