First time through you will spend a lot more time on campaigns than compared to the old series. But sequential runs should be insanely quick or optimized since you will have discovered and know the map itself

It shouldn't be a problem later on when chapters cover multiple important battles, but the entire Yellow Turban Rebellion campaign just felt like a giant tutorial to get you used to the systems.

You can't buy Red Hare and I played all of Lu Bu's story without it leveling up once. Maybe it's addressed in the day one patch.
Don't you unlock it as a Buyable option after you finish the correct character story? I've seen Pictures where it's buyable.

I was actually sort of pumped about this title. I usually try to get only one a gen, but I really enjoyed berserk and the open world and smoother combat looked like it'd make for enough of a leap over berserk to make it worth picking up. A shame it seems to be kind of crap though.

I expected the framerate to be bad, but not Deadly Premonition level of bad. Just consistently awful, it hurts my eyes to play. What a shame.

Its dynasty warriors, its never been consistant (with the minor exception of samurai warriors 4 when not in multiplayer) Stable framerate has never been koei's cup of tea for musou titles.

So should I just wait for hyrule warriors to get released again or get the ps4 warriors orochi instead of this? This is looking and sounding disapointing. Some of the combo video stuff is cool tho

While this gets patched, If you want to play a musou, I suggest the best musou released One Piece Pirate Warriors 3.

Might be an option to nuke the resolution, which at least on PC is an innate option anyway. Gotta get it for Xbox too though.

This is starting to sound like the worst game I really want to buy. Perhaps if I could be more flippant with game purchases I would, just out of morbid curiosity.

Man don't do this to yourself. I basically did this with Dead Rising 4 because pride didn't allow me to skip a Dead Rising game and I suffered 18 hours of boring mediocre shit because of it.

Always value time over money when it comes to gaming my friend. With so much great shit coming out these days it's hard to justify spending even 10$ on a shitty game when you could pick up dozens of good games in a humble bundle for the same price.

Well, in my eyes it'd be more spending $50 or $60 for a night of fucking around with the game, not committing to beating it unless I want to. Which isn't a luxury I have anyway, and with the games coming out a really bad choice besides.

Wait wait wait... why did they remove the iconic character-specific weapons? That was like half the appeal of trying a character.

They redid the basic combat. Due to the new system, every weapon basically has 4 different standard attack strings depending on the state of the opponent (normal, air, stun, down). So, each weapon needs a larger number of animations than before, and so they couldn't update all 80+ existing weapons alongside adding new ones.

I do think they messed up with their weapon choices though. Their priority seemed to be adding more generic weapons that could be shared among many cast members, but still limiting that sharing to 3 characters at most. They really should have gone with the DW7 route, where they made sure iconic weapons like claws and tonfa were all there, even if it resulted in 5 characters with the generic sword. Adding unique weapons like those should have taken priority over less important stuff like two different lance/spear type movesets (Zhao Yun vs Jiang Wei).

So barren open world, performance issues, and maybe the PC (and xbox) version gets patched. No thanks Koei. Done with your bad PC ports. Nioh was an exception to the Koei PC norm.

It seems the files are there, but they left them out.

Sounds like the typical Tecmo Koei PC port, leaving or opting out of options despite the fact they are there to use. Case in point with DW8 XL uses PS3 assets instead of PS4 ones. They did the same thing with SW4-II as well.

I really want to enjoy these games on PC and hope for their success but KT makes this very difficult to so when they continuously opt for the lesser option multiple times without fail. DW9 is supposed to be a current gen game, all options should have been there from the very beginning.

No, not at all! It's not like you knew the game wasn't good and made the OT to maliciously waste everyone's money.
Lots of people here had high hopes and were really excited! And though some decided not to buy the game, I've seen people that are enjoying it.
And besides that, it's a good place for people to discuss and fencesitters can learn about the game before deciding to buy or not.

Please don't feel bad, your OT is really nice! (❁´◡`❁)

That's strange, I've definitely never had Red Hare or Shadow Runner show up. All of those stories are finished and I'm sitting on over 400k to blow, not counting the loot drops to sell. I'll check again once I get the patch installed.

Don't feel bad at all. There are people enjoying the game. I feel like once we get a patch to improve performance, it will make it more palatable for people. And we knew these new design choices were gonna split the fan base. So no surprise there. KT probably could've done with a delay though. But thats neither here or there at this point. And we need a place to discuss these issues anyway.

Im about to sit down and play the game myself. Im hoping im in the camp that will enjoy it.

I'm surprised at how well it's reviewed. 70 metacritic with 31 reviews beats out most titles in the DW series. Even a point higher than DW8XL, with about as many reviews. Seems much more divisive among fans, though.

Don't beat yourself up about that. I had hopes for this game and this thread helped to show me that I should skip it. Nintendo needs to hurry up and give me a release for Hyrule Warriors. I need a good Musou fix.

I think this happens a lot with established franchises that reviewers don't get. I think they tend to attribute any failings as "part of the game that people enjoy" and score it decently regardless to avoid a fan shitstorm. You see this happening with a lot of "shit" entries in series that shouldn't have reviewed well at all but still end up with decent scores. Dawn of War 3, Empire Total War, Rome 2 TW (the first years at least), Dead Rising 4, Dark Souls 2 (which I still love, but it's the highest reviewed game in the series for some perplexing reason), etc.

For those desperately needing more Musou yet haven't played Spirit of Sanada, maybe give that game a shot.

It tells a decent story focused on one family (with a nice reference system that explains names/locations/events to the unfamiliar). Its base management aspects (side quests, fishing, etc) were what got rolled into the DW9 open world.

I guess, but they scored DW6 appropriately low, and DW7 was somehow scored even more harshly (59 and 57 respectively). Maybe stuff like Orochi 3 and Hyrule Warriors has softened perspectives on the series, or drawn in new fans.

Sins of the father is a real thing in review scores as well as in general reception I think. I expect DW10 to get a similar treatment at least at first no matter how good it is.

And yeah I think with the softer entries that bring in otherwise uninterested fans has done a lot to soften the blow and derision the series otherwise normally would have gotten otherwise, for sure.

I will likely pick up a new (older) Musou game the next time they're on sale and was debating between Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends, Spirit of Sanada, or Warriors All-Stars. I'd be grabbing whichever on Steam so I'm open for a push to any of those three.

Does Spirit of Sanada still feature oodles of characters with all the different weapons and such? I figure that's considered a staple of the series but I always assumed it was some sort of side story sort of thing that was more focused.

And honestly I still might just go crazy and get Dynasty Warriors 9 despite everything. I'm really curious and I have a beefy enough computer that it may run okay enough that I won't be terribly bothered and can still have fun. Patches could help, though.

right played for just over 2hours, time for a review,

combat
straight out the bat the combat is far far more better than any previous warriors title, i cannot stress enough how greater the flow attacks into the stun launch n knockdowns, it works so well

the open world

it actually works really well, everything flows together, its nice have smaller battles with other officers in same timeline etc around on the map that couldnt be done in a single level on previous titles, it seems more immersive especially if you love china and the general underlying kingdoms etc.
the side missions are quite a nice extra and its nice heading to main missions and finding outposts and other camps around with officers needing help, or officers you may desire to kill,

i can see with more refinements the open world really making things much better than previous titles, an in some aspects for me it already has, its quite cool when there isnt actually huge mobs of monsters every second either, yes at times there is still quite big groups thats for sure, but i like the downtime aswell and when things need to its chaotic which i actually prefer because it makes the more important battles bigger and better and not just the same shit as the room down the road so to speak.

the clone stuff isnt actually as bad as whats proclaimed, its more so like unique movesets with heroes sharing same weapon, seems pretty dumb to have 93 unique weapons to be quite honest and in prior titles things did get somewhat silly with a boat and stuff lol, but overall this clone stuff is a minor concern at best and frankly i probs wont use all the heroes anyway, but the flow to combo attacks + musou makes things very much unique per hero.

im playing on pc i have a top range computer and im getting stable 60fps so for me everything is fine there, (although i understand the frustrations of there poor optimization for lower machines etc) my main actual gripe is the lack of aa on trees etc can really be off putting at times

the music is incredible very very much the shit :D

overall if you love the warriors series i say yes jump in the combat system is something of awesome for people who grew tiered of the same square traingle combos over and over and mostly using same combo cos it was best, i honestly hope this combat system is kept and maybe tweaked further in some aspects.

I've played it for 2.5 hours so far and I REALLY like it. It's like Bladestorm had a baby with Dynasty Warriors, and that's my jam. I am playing on a PS4 Pro and at higher difficulty though.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned elsewhere is that in the options, there are two display modes: action and movie. On my Pro, movie mode is basically a slide show but looks much better, while action has a better framerate but looks muddy.

Character selection for each mission is somewhat limited (mostly the Sanada family and their handlers/allies). Side stories will pop up at times ("meanwhile this war is going on...") that allow you to play other factions.

It's a damn shame 9 is turning out to be worse than 6. The worst part about 6 was the cloned movesets and low variety of weapons-but it was a far, far better game than 9. A damn shame.

Yes, all characters from Samurai Warriors 4 and 4-II are there and there are a couple of new ones. However, you have a limited selection of characters for the main story due to the story focus. There are secondary battles that allow playing as the rest of the cast though in addition to replaying past battles.

Game is juttery as hell and the Frame rate is sub-par as fuck but its not bad game play wise. We have had the same combos since DW3 and the first game that switches it up is trash. Hate on it for the technical issues but not the game play.

Good to hear. I was still planning on getting it but I am waiting for them to fix the framerate. Thanks for your review.
