No threads like this yet I believe.

I'm sure everyone has at least a few youtubers that they watch, that they enjoy a hell of a lot, yet don't quite pull the views they either deserve, or that you would expect.

This thread serves as a way to get their name out, and also to allow people who may be looking for decent content on thhe massive platform that is youtube, to find something worth their time.

I'll start with one.

George-Rockall Schmidt

A channel that focuses on movie analysis, and social commentary. This channel is refreshing in a number of ways, for one, he reports on the subjects in his videos in a very unbiased and objective way, something very refreshing in the area of youtube that is so dominated with opinionated thoughts. To give a good example, he recently uploaded a video on why people believe the earth is flat, a thought that a large majority of us would deem as crazy, but he looks at it in an objective way, why do they believe this? Interesting content, provokes a lot of thought, and is also very funny, in a dry, british way. Would definitely recommend the rest of his content, high quality, weekly uploads.

What youtubers do you guys subscribe to, that don't get nearly enough attention?

Jeremy Parish should have way more subscribers than he does. His channel is incredible and no one ever talks about it.

Another really cool channel is Defunctland. He goes through really cool rides, amusement parks that aren't around anymore.

Doesn't look like this thread went too far. There are many channels out there that deserve more subscribers/viewers. In the past, in these sorts of threads, I think I've mainly posted drummers (I like playing drums). For those of us who like watches, craftsmanship, insane shit we'll never buy...there is this: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLaoR2K7Dsa_KUK-DVpdZZA

Watchfinder & Co. put on a good series discussing, reviewing, and breaking down some of the most coveted timepieces out there.

A channel that I came across very recently is The Ushanka Show which details what life was like during the Soviet Union as the operator grew up there from the late 1970s up to its dissolution in 1991.

toco toco tv - Follows Japanese artists and creators as they share the things and places that inspire them.

Gameumentary - Documentaries on the people behind games and the preservation of game history. I'm not even sure how they're pulling off such high quality videos with less than 2,000 subscribers and a Patreon that isn't exactly raking it in. If you enjoy noclip or Cloth Map, you should enjoy this.

LambHoot - Videos about video games. Similar to the multitude of other analysis/review channels out there, but I find LH more personable than a lot of them and to have a level of enthusiasm most lack.

Not positive how "underrated" these are but they definitely deserve as much attention as possible:
Strafefox& Jeremy Parish (of Retronauts Podcast) for video game retrospectives. TierZoo for fun overviews of animals as if they were classes in an RPG/Video game. Lots of fun animal facts, too!

Don't watch a lot of youtube but I've quite enjoyed MrBTongue's videos (infrequent as they are). Predominantly gaming/movie analysis with a bit more of a literary perspective. There was a thread on gaming side for his most recent video and it seems I'm not alone in recommending his work.

I like the Bon Appétit channel in general. Plus they have Xmens rogue with some helpful vids.

More people need to know about the 'Colors' channel

They feature lesser known artists, foreign and local. The strip down renditions are often better than the album versions.

I'll always rep supergreatfriend who does great Let's Plays as well as features like looking at the wii shop titles that are going to disappear forever soon. He's got a pleasant upbeat voice and a great sense of humor. His comprehensive run-through of Illbleed many years ago is legendary. My favorite though is the series where he takes a misshapen masked wrestler named Bully Demise through an incredible journey through the MDickie games and beyond.

Love me some SGF, one of the very few let's players that I can stand to listen to. Started watching him back when he started his really good Deadly Premonition playthrough years ago. That one convinced me to try the game (played Spy Fiction before DP so knowing with was directed by the same guy was a nice surprise as well).

slowbeef - one of the originators of the 'Let's Play' and the creator of Retsupurae, now a days slowbeef is a family man who does smaller videos, occasionally satirical looks at YouTube, all the while doing his own thing looking at indie games. He's still doing unique things, like something called Visual Novel Book Club, where he has a weekly conversation with a group of other players about a visual novel in a book club-like fashion (so far they've done Ever 17, Analogue, Hate Plus, Hustle Cat, and they are towards the end of Danganronpa V3 currently).

his brand of humor is very dry yet on the nose but I really enjoy it, here are a few examples

This guy Woodsie did a bunch of videos on the Steam controller a few years ago, but mainly focuses on VR stuff now. Unfortunately, he doesn't upload that often. If you like Super Bunnyhop's stuff, you may like him.

Here's an overview on the state of VR last year:

And his comprehensive review on the Steam Controller:

In actuality, Charborg is great for a pseudo Dunkey-like channel. I enjoy Blunty as well when it comes to tech and gaming opinions. On mobile but will update with links when I get to my desktop.

Matt McMuscles -
first things first, his channel video

Matt is the founder of Super Best Friends Play and former game-tester, and this is his stand-alone channel, where he plays high class games like Bible Black or Spider-Man 2 for the PC. He puts a lot of work into both his videos and streams, with beautiful intros for each video, all done by people he's collaborated with in the past (like 2Snacks, koidrake, and CrankyConstruct), and lots of his playthroughs (that aren't stream captures) are edited as well which is something I love to see in gameplay video quick-looks.

some notable things on his channel:
- A hilarious LP of Bible Black and Life is Strange: Before the Storm
- A series looking at the good and mostly bad Spider-Man games called The Mediocre Spider-Matt
- Streams and videos collaborating with others, like his wife 'Crymetina', Liam from the Rising Superstream, wrestler Brennan Williams, and more
- Wii Remember, a series looking at some of the underrated/overlooked games Matt liked on the Wii
- The Bug Report, where Matt talks about his days as a game tester while breaking a game at the same time
- Matt's Nightmares, where Matt plays horror games because he loves them
- A shitload of Godzilla
- A shitload of The Punisher

here is a compilation of some highlights from his channel

AI & Games - A channel focused on examining and analyzing the AI design of various games
Bright Sun Films - Explores abandoned places and does video essays on cancelled projects like Universal Studios Dubai
Dead Meat - A fun channel that highlights the kills in various horror movies and slasher series, from Friday The 13th to Chucky
FLEB / Mr Puzzle - Two channels, each with a similar focus on showcasing and solving physical puzzles. Half the fun is seeing how ingenious many of these puzzles are
Isaac Arthur - A channel that covers science fiction and transhumanist concepts. Uplifting, interstellar empires, ringworlds, space elevators, and more. Accent takes some getting used to, but the concepts are fascinating
Kurzgesagt - Cute animated essays on topics such as the microbiome, red dwarfs, and addiction
Like Stories of Old - Video essay analyses that approach film, shows, and games from a literary angle
The Loam Ranger - First person GoPro perspective and commentary of mountain bike trails
This Guy Edits - A film analysis channel about editing, by an award-winning editor
Tom Francis - Vlogs by the developer of Gunpoint and Heat Signature. Tom excels at breaking down and explaining game design concerns and challenges in easy-to-grasp layman terms.

This dude is criminally underrated. His videos deserve at least 5 million views, and he only gets around 200k.

TBH his persona is kind of grating to me but damn is his information good! Worth the sub just for that.

My contribution is TREY the Explainer. Lots of great paleontologically accurate dinosaur videos, debunks of a lot of cryptozoology, and a few other fun tidbits. Here's his most recent vid:

moonbowmusicmovie aka Meine Meinung

They're this small-time Japanese band and they've got a lot of lovely acoustic covers of various songs from movies, games, and even other folk songs.

That and they just seem like the sweetest bunch of people when they perform.

Thanks for the Defunctland recommendation. Been going through the S1 videos, the channel is really well done

I've been enjoying Gone with the Wynns who are sailing around Panama right now. I discovered their channel about a year and a half ago just as they were buying a boat and switching from full time rv'ing to sailing (so I think watching their sailing adventure since the beginning is part of the appeal for me). They post nice ~10 minute videos on Sunday that are half relaxing and half depressing. They are just about to go through the Panama Canal so I'm pretty interested to see what that's like.

Northman is pretty cool. Its videos of people making things by hand and primarily out of wood. I don't even have a huge interest in doing this sort of thing but its fascinating to watch people make these things by hand.

Another one since I'm sure a lot of people here love Japan is Japanchanneldotcom. I swear you could get an Anthropological degree just by watching this guys videos.

Its a channel started by a guy from Australia living in Japan. What I like about it is that its not some obnoxious vlogger yelling at the camera and taking pictures of the shit they took that morning. Its just a guy telling you how it is good or bad no frills, just the facts/opinions without all the glitter.

First in a playlist of 208 videos on the differences between Japan and western countries.

Jon Bois' videos, particularly his Pretty Good series, is way better than its ~ 200k viewers suggests.

It's mostly sports history with a big focus on USA sports, but I still love his videos even as someone who usually isn't into things like that. They are well edit and presented, cover interesting topics, have a great sense of humor, and sometimes even manage to have a pretty positive message. The video above is a short history of the worst Olympic event ever.

Sadly, some of his newer videos are just posted under the SB Nation Youtube channel, which can make them a bit harder to find

Bazbattles

They do great summaries of important historical battles. They provide context, historical facts and do blow by blow visual summaries of entire encounters.

I have no real interest in australian politics and society, but the dude is so hilarious I now know more about it than any other country's politics outside of Poland :D
