Hello and welcome to the ASMR |OT|. I'm not entirely sure many people on ResetEra will join this thread (the old thread on the old forum was somewhat unpopular), but I do hope you enjoy this stay. The OP is essentially an extensive FAQ, but the thread itself is mainly meant for exchanging favorite videos and general ASMR discussion. So let's get going.

What is ASMR?

Nobody really knows. It's a pleasant sensation occurring under some specific circumstances. It's best described as "tingles", a very much physical, but yet rather gentle sensation somewhere under your skin. Basically, if you ever felt something special when hearing rain outside that was ASMR.

What causes ASMR?

It depends on the person. Typically it's about specific "cozy"/unusual situations – I've named some examples above and the others include being groomed, whisper, barber visits and many more. Regular sounds also work for many people.

What is this thread about?

ASMR videos. This sensation can be replicated by watching (or listening to) videos emulating situations that would cause ASMR under normal circumstances. YouTube has a massive vibrant community of creators (self-dubbed ASMRtists) which has been going for almost six years now. Most of the videos are binaural now – meaning you get full 3D sound if you use headphones.

Do I have ASMR?

You tell me! If none of this rings a bell, chances are you don't. You're still, however, encouraged to explore the available content and see if something works for you. It's really not possible to explain it further – it's just a sensation you have. If you have it, it's natural and hard to explain – like you can't really explain eyesight. It's just there (and it can intensely pleasant).

What if I don't have ASMR?

You can still enjoy the videos. Many people who don't have ASMR watch them for relaxation, falling asleep, focusing on their work and studies and more.

Is ASMR sexual?

No. Although whispering, ear kissing and romantic roleplays are some of the more popular ASMR genres, this has nothing to do with sex or pornography. Again, it's a completely separate sensation, completely independent from arousal. They are not always mutually exclusive, though, so it's not uncommon to have ASMR during actual sex.

Is there ASMR porn?

Yes, but I won't get into it. I'm not against it (and not into it), but we're not going to discuss it here.

Is this some New Age thing?

No. ASMR is a natural, purely physical sensation. It's not a spiritual thing, doesn't involve mind altering drugs or supernatural entities.

What does the science say?

Read the relevant Wikipedia article section. Basically, the phenomenon hasn't been clearly defined and observed until recently. There were no real studies yet, but some preliminary stuff suggests that this is probably real. So it's still early.

I'm partial to Ephemeral Right, PPOMO, Donna ASMR, Caroline ASMR, Jessie ASMR, fastASMR and ASMR Magic. I listen to a lot of the others, simply jumping around the YouTube suggestions. Will have something more concrete tomorrow – right now I have 1% charge on a MacBook and a sleepy head.

My favorite is MassageASMR.

FinngamerASMR is also near the top. His regular channel is pretty good too for asmr.

Oh yes, his regular channel is great for that. Those were my ASMR videos before I got into ASMR proper (early 2012). His ASMR channel never really did it for me because it wasn't binaural.

Finngamer used to be on GAF, by the way. Not sure if he moved here

Oh man, I didn't realize GAF/ERA had an ASMR community! Rad! You know, I bought a nice microphone explicitly to make ASMR videos and never got around to it... :V

This has quickly become top of my playlist:

Holy SHIT.. an ASMR thread. Watched!

Fairly new to ASMR stuff, but here is my favorite so far. 10 hours of goodness. He's also got a 20 hour one for sleep.

I'm not really into the tapping/eating/squidging etc type of videos, much prefer the role playing ones.
I love to see what inventive scenarios people come up with!
favs are ASMRrequests, Dana ASMR, Heather Feather, Latte ASMR. Any recommendations along these lines welcome!
also in accidental ASMR are the japaneseprintmaking streams on Twitch, Dave Bull makes traditional Japanese prints and streams from his Tokyo workshop most days.

edit: just checked out Goodnight Moon, this is my kinda thing!

A barrage of quotes incoming. Sorry – I don't really have a lot of time to post during weekdays :/

I do listen to ASMR videos like 60% of the time at work, though!

Massage videos are great for this.

Two of my favorites.

These work, but in a weird way! Definitely good stuff worth looking into.

The Bar-Times Japanese bartending videos are also really great.

Oh snap, I never knew I wanted this, but I do. On a somewhat related note, the "slow TV" train rides usually do it for me. The only downside with them and the one you posted is that you'll want to actually watch the video – which is not always convenient.

This is my new favourite ASMR Vid:

That's nice! I generally prefer when the sound source moves a lot (preferably around the mic, as well as changing the distance), but it sounds really nice. Will get it a closer listen.

Oh man, I didn't realize GAF/ERA had an ASMR community! Rad! You know, I bought a nice microphone explicitly to make ASMR videos and never got around to it... :V

This has quickly become top of my playlist:

It kinda had, but it never was an official OT – just an off-topic thread titled "your favorite ASMR videos". I'm not sure I can just link it here, but you can look it up if you want. It was very slow, but nice.

And the video is great! That's exactly what I like – complex soundscapes with diverse sounds. And it'd be very interesting to listen to your own ASMR videos, especially if I get to make requests :P One of my friends borrowed a binaural mic from someone once and we had some fun just hooking it up to some headphones and doing various sounds.

I love Dmitri, but I don't think anything can top Ardra's ASMR Luxury for me:

I used to listen to Ardra's match lighting video and over 3-4 years ago. Been listening to some of her stuff recently as well, although I'm not familiar with this particular video. She's great and she improved her production values a lot over the year.

I know this! Not only it's funny, it's a genuine ASMR video. I think all other Kongs deserve their own debut.

Holy SHIT.. an ASMR thread. Watched!

Fairly new to ASMR stuff, but here is my favorite so far. 10 hours of goodness. He's also got a 20 hour one for sleep.

I listen to Dimitri quite a lot. The only complaint I have is that perhaps his didn't really change all that much over the years.

Try Ephemeral Rift, that's the OG arthouse ASMR. The guy is super talented and he puts lots of effort into all these characters, costumes and whatnot. His videos are also pretty varied: there are good talking/roleplaying videos, sounds videos, combinations of both, ambient sounds, gaming – you name it.

Here's one of his videos I recently liked to get you started:

Interesting! I love those videos too, I like lots of soundscape stuff but honestly sometimes just a good scratching or tapping video is all I want. I just need to figure out the easiest way to capture video as all I really have at the moment is my cellphone and a blue yeti.

This one was great for me, right up until the water sounds. I don't have a problem with mouth sounds, but something about liquids puts me off.

You could just do audio and use a static image in the video. And too bad about water sounds, I like them myself! Especially that one video with sprinkling an umbrella.

I wish I could find a pair of really soft soft soft headphones so I could fall asleep listening to it. I'm a side sleeper with one speaker on my small dresser and it kills a lot of the sound.

I think you could just use smaller earbuds? I use the ones the default iPhone ones at work and it's a decent experience. Obviously not as good as the big Sennheiser model I have at home, but not bad.

Man, I really wish this guy still made ASMR videos.

Wow, I completely forgot about him. He made some seriously great stuff.

Speaking of lost and forgotten ASMR people, quietexperiment is one of the original greats. This video with a relaxation/meditation script with some top-tier ASMR sounds has not been properly replicated in the 5+ years since it was made:

Oh nice. I was wondering if we had an ASMR thread yet.

Recommend me some good ASMR artists.

Gentle Whispering is still my favourite. It's an older video but this is still my favourite by her:

She recently did a collaboration with WhispersRed which was great:

I've also been liking Articulate Design, which is unusual because male ASMR artists don't normally trigger me.

I've never actually gotten into Gentle Whispering. Even back in 2012 when there were like 10 people doing ASMR stuff and she was the first one. Some of her videos are nice, but I don't really follow her a lot.

Hey all,

I never even looked on the old forum for an ASMR thread! I've been watching for a few months now, pretty much every night. I do not get tingles at all I just use my ipad without headphones to relax. A lot of times I end up watching my favorite creators just for the content they come up with and fall asleep to my ASMR playlist as background noise. I'll post a few of my favorite channels, in case you all hadn't found any of them. The one thing they all have in common is the occasional gaming video.

I like ASMR Darling she cracks me up, Goodnight Moon does a great job at acting and bonus points for doing fantasy themed stuff. Ephemeral Rift is probably my favorite just because he is always putting out content that is usually interesting or at the very least different than most other ASMRtists'. Gibi ASMR puts out content relative to my interests and is a decent actress at role play. Bluewhisper has some decent videos, but I mostly just watch her Pokemon card openings. Same goes for Soft Serenity ASMR but she also does gaming related videos, I like her soft voice a lot during Pokemon card collection and her Minecraft gameplay. The final one is RelaxingASMR, he is an older gentleman the only thing I've watched of his really is his Minecraft videos.

Hopefully, we get a nice little community going on here. I could always use some more ASMR!

Do you guys have any suggestions -- I am looking for brushing / soft scratching sounds that move from one ear, behind your head, to the other ear. No talking, prefer no role playing. Any ideas?

I enjoy the behind the head stuff as well. I can't really do a thorough search right now, but this might be up your alley: ASMR Tascam Brushing Deep in Your Ears (NO TALKING) Intense & Varied Mic Brushing for Tingles ✨. Also look into CarolineASMR and DonnaASMR, they have plenty of stuff like that. I'll also share one of my all time favorite videos: ASMR Pure Ear Cupping (With & Without Lotion) // No Talking. It's not brushing/soft scratching, but I think you might like it.

I get what you mean. For speaking videos the ones that are pleasing to hear vary greatly and its super personal on who it is. Personally I really like ones simply talking in a soft voice not the "mouth sounds" type videos -shudder- Also I love, LOVE camera sounds in videos, they are super relaxing even if they are not meant to be heard. Gotta try and record some sounds so people know what I mean if its not clear.

Anyway speaking to one of my friends about this again recently and she wants me to make "gaming ASMR" videos or something. "You have so many fightsticks you should seriously make videos for them!" Like I guess there is a market for everything... but don't know if I want to.

You know, I've always wanted to know. Whenever I watched videos of someone concentrating on a task, I sort of shut down and utterly relaxed. And I get a funny feeling in my tummy.

Is that ASMR as well?

Can't say I I ever heard someone refer to a sensation in their stomach. Maybe you're getting tingles in your stomach, lol? I only get them on my head, neck and back, though I assume the head tingles are prominent with everyone who feels ASMR. The shutting down and utterly relaxed feeling goes along with it.

The GAF ASMR thread is what got me into it and actually defined the feeling I always felt as a real, quantifiable thing. Initial triggers: Bob Ross, school lice checks, hair cuts. I'm 100% bald nowadays and the only thing I miss is getting my hair cut...

I listen to a lot of channels but I'll recommend a few that i feel are above and beyond in production and tingle-itude:

Gentle Whispering
Pelagea ASMR
ASMR Attack
Blue Whisper
Fairy Char ASMR
Isabel Imagination ASMR
ARDRA -asmr-
MissFushi *Kind of ASMR/gaming hybrid
Unintentional ASMR (Pekola, check this one out)

I didn't even know there had been a thread about ASMR on GAF, to be honest I stumbled across this by accident while trying to see if there was a thread about a VN but I'm happy I did

I've been listening to ASMR for years now to help deal with social anxiety and insomnia

TingTing might be my favorite artist right now but I also like Amalzd, MissASMR, MassageASMR, and Chycho among many others :)

Had no idea this was a thread I searched the community list and didn't find one. Subbed and messaged a mod to close mine as well as linked to this one.

Glad to have an ASMR community on here.

Hrm, I don't know if this counts as self promotion since it's on topic (I guess I should know this considering I'm a mod.) but I've been tinkering around with my microphone trying to get some ASMR content up as a hobby. It's really rough around the edges as I'm mostly just trying to get into the process at this point.

EDIT: Threw another one up tonight!

I really like the match sounds one. The controller video has a little too much downtime, I think. Keep up the good work! (I noticed you made some others – will check them out)
