Man. I really dislike how twin galaxies is the go to for so many records. Totally suspicious.

My life is a lie. I got my picture with him and Walter MOTHER F'N Day at the Art of Video Games exhibit opening day.
He was a good dude but now I know he's a lie, and a cheat!

Ok im not understanding perfectly here. What does it have to do to play it on original hardware or emulator? You mean he could have hack the game to get this high score?

A lot of these old school gamer records are based on playing the game on the original hardware so recreate it as it was back in the day. Emulators can sometimes run things a little differently than the original arcade cabinets and cause discrepancies, sometimes one's that can aid the player in some ways.

How about the DK Arcade game that's unlocked in DK64? Would it count if you beat the world record on that? Just wondering.

What is the emulator WR? There was a time where people would stream emulator WR attempts on Twitch but I haven't seen them in a while.

The funniest thing about this, for me, was that King of Kong manipulated their footage to present a specific narrative:

Twin Galaxies were unreliable, played massive favorites and Billy Mitchell was an awful person.

Now we know that that story is actually pretty much how things really were.

If the Hobbit can make Gandalf look like he's towering over the hobbits then a King of Kong movie can make Peter Dinklage large and in charge. I'd also say his height isn't his most distinctive feature lol.
Wiebe is like 6ft 2 which makes Mitchell something like 6ft 7, I'd say that's pretty distinctive! I wonder what the reaction would be to a Dinklage flick that "undoes" his achondroplasia. Anyways, total detail, sorry. Isn't Mitchell the guy who was parodied by Cartoon Network's Regular Show?

The old emulator has a function which allows you to restart a floor you screwed up on over and over again meaning that Mitchell's scores may have not been in a single sitting and thus wouldn't be legitimate scores.

Stolen Valor all of em! The thirst for any kind of stardom is sting with these clowns. It means nothing to anyone IMHO. The mark of a man or women isn't based on your gaming creds! We have to have better things to focus on than cheaters in these things.

While those may be suspect, Billy Mitchell IS insanely good at Donkey Kong and his public record isn't that far off 1 million

Without a doubt, but that makes it even worse. For somebody so rooted in the community he knew exactly what he was doing and that he should have admitted using an Emulator. The possibilities for altering the whole game and therefore the records are obvious. If he couldn't properly do it or just wasn't good enough for the top of the list, well ... too bad for him.

I know King of Kong hat some anti-Mitchell narrative, but looking at his shady history about submitting his records there was always something off. Good thing, stuff like that comes out now...otherwise what's the point?

Why does the world hate Billy Mitchell so much? He seems like a perfectly nice of enough guy.

Cheating in speedruns/high score attempts are a lot more common than you would think. Even nowadays where video verification is standard you still have guys trying more creative ways of gaining an edge.

The version in DK64 is based on the Japanese version of DK, which isn't played in the US to the degree that the US version is. However, DK64 seems to make more subtle tweaks beyond that. It's not conclusive, since there isn't a lot of interest in studying this version.

The old emulator has a function which allows you to restart a floor you screwed up on over and over again meaning that Mitchell's scores may have not been in a single sitting and thus wouldn't be legitimate scores.
All versions of MAME have this function. WolfMAME, the build used by scorekeepers, is supposed to disable this function when recording a run, but there are ways around it.

Of course, we don't know if Todd used WolfMAME, or even what point update of MAME he used at all (point updates typically behave the same even across builds). I don't think Todd was even recording his runs to begin with...

These situations are hard because you want to give the benefit of the doubt to the accusers but at the same time it's easy to believe that someone would make something up in order to disparage a person in such a prominent position. At the same time, casting doubt on the accusers makes it that much more difficult for others to come forward. I think the important thing is that we all learn to respect each other and behave accordingly.

There was apparently a Yoshi's Island speedrunner who was outed and owned up to it in a pretty humble way. This video talks about it:

And that's awesome. But these are grown ass men who buried themselves in lies and denials. This kid just happens to speedrun during a time where cheating is much more difficult to do without being called out.

I don't know about that.

It was almost as if they wanted to make Mitchell as the bad guy. I also think that the makers took some liberties with the timing and sequence of events.

What sucks is that Twin Galaxies has a lot of high score records from tons of retro games that will probably never be played in a serious way again. With all the news that have been appearing lately we don't really know which record is real and what not
