I think the HomePod fork of iOS is going to get a massive upgrade detailed at WWDC. That's not just me being hopeful, I think we'll see a very similar situation to the Apple Watch, where it launched with v1 of the software which was, for lack of a better term, total shit, and then a mere few months later they showed of v2 with a giant host of improvements, which of course released in September. Just a few months of the product being out there and in use before a pretty significant overhaul of features, is my guess.

I agree. Part of the reason I also bought at launch is I have a feeling the HomePod won't be getting a refresh, let alone a meaningful one, for a number of years.

I agree with this 100%. I think Apple sort of backed themselves into a corner by announcing HomePod last June. They finally got to a point where they had to ship it once they had something that resembled a 1.0 version of the OS. My guess is what we see at WWDC will be what they originally wanted 1.0 to be, but didn't quite have the time to get done for launch. I also agree that it won't be getting a refresh (short of there possibly being a larger, more expensive, Plus version at some point).

I have a Sonos One right now. I like it, but I honestly find myself using Alexa way less frequently than I anticipated. I'm getting a HomePod day 1 because I care about audio quality and it should be better than my Sonos, and Siri will likely be able to do just enough to cover the cases where I do stuff via voice. Of course I'm excited to see what the future brings for HomePod, but I'm not terribly concerned at the number of Voice commands at launch.

This might be a weird place to ask this, but does anyone know of an image editor on Windows that is as good and budget-friendly as Pixelmator on macOS? Currently using Paint.net and I don't really care for it. GIMP has an absolutely awful interface and I refuse to use it.

Unfortunately there really isn't anything. All the Windows programs that might have fit that niche - like Paintshop Pro - have destroyed their UIs chasing the casual photo touchup market.

If you're willing to spend a bit more than you would have for Pixelmator you can try Affinity Photo which has a Windows version now or Fire Alpaca SE.
Wow, thanks! I have heard really good things about Affinity, but I thought it was still Mac-only. $49 is still pretty cheap, IMO.

Hmm issues with high sierra formatting ntfs drives.

Also 10.3.3 is a bear... taking forever to install

Interesting to have both. How are the AirPods? I was put off by the odd look and fear of them falling out, but are they ok? I've gotten more used to the look now
They are perfect. They fit my ear just right and don't fall out. The case and it's smaller footprint suits my day to day use (outside of the gym)

I got my iPhone screen replaced for the yellow tinted whites and they put this operation under "customer satisfaction" so it means they will not replace it again if it's not defective but the one they mounted has light bleed on two spots on the lower left corner, does that get considered a defective screen? The Apple Store is too far away from home to just do a trip and risking them saying that they can't do anything about it.
I regret getting it replaced now, the new screen is just as yellow as before and it's now even worse because of the light bleed.

My iPhone 8 has been making audio clicks when I'm listening to things with headphones on while walking... it has been driving me nuts. Then it occurred to me today... it's the phone building a static charge and discharging it through the headphones. It's exactly that. If I secure the phone so it can't move while in my pocket there's no audio click. Frustrating. Is there some sort of case that will stop this?

You'll be waiting until around September if you do, so it really depends if you want to go most of another year on the phone you have. We also don't know if the X will follow the traditional upgrade cycle.

My personal theory is that Apple will release an iPhone 9 this year and at most bump up the processor specs on the X. Then either next year or the year after the X will become the iPhone 10 with some new upgrades and multiple sizes.

I went from the 7+ to the X under IUP, and it was absolutely worth it. The gestural interface is intuitive, and a joy to use. The X is the first large Apple phone with a design I've liked, and the X feels much better in your pocket than the Plus phones. Face ID is good; I only miss Touch ID when I'm laying in bed.

That being said, if you depend on the big battery of the Plus, you might want to wait for the X Plus in the fall. The X's battery life isn't great like the Plus phones are. And viewing photos and video on the X are a definite step back from the Plus.

If you have a TB3 MacBook Pro and are looking for an eGPU enclosure that works out of the box with macOS - there's a bundle with a Sonnet Breakway Box and an RX 580 for $699 at Amazon. Considering just an 8GB RX 580 costs $600-700 lately due to miners, that's a damn good deal.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077K8KNDS/?tag=era0f0-20

y'all i bought this thing and can confirm it owns. works painlessly with macOS and requires only a small amount of setup for Windows

Why are you in this thread to troll?
Because I like to be informed about my Apple devices, which I rally like and would never exchange for Android. Didnt knew that this is the Cultist-Club, I thought that I am allowed to love some Apple devices and shake my head about others.

By the way, its not a "fanboy" thing when someone says that Siri is shit. Its a fact, everytime confirmed when tech outlets let the assistants compete. Apple dropped the ball big time with Siri in the last few years. And if you do a Personal Assistant Device, you cant come and and say, we are aiming more at music, so we can take a premium for it, then you have still to compete with Google and Amazon, because, luckily, you can hook up a great speaker via the small niche technology called Bluetooth and have great sound while having access to third party skills and working functions.

If you had an issue with the HomePod, totally cool. I have issues with Apple's launch of it. But it makes no sense to compare it to a Dot. You're just coming off like a troll.

I have an Echo Dot (paired with a soundbar) but a HomePod, with the kind of sound they're touting, not to mention the Siri abilities and whatnot, at $175 is like losing money by not getting it.

...I've spent more than that in a bluetooth UE Boom.

You can do both.

It bums me out that the HomePod still isn't announced for Canada. I don't get it. Supply doesn't seem to be THAT much of an issue, since the American site still offers release day shipping. The French language requirement shouldn't be an issue either, since France has a Spring release planned.

I've just been really wanting a speaker replacement for my UE Boom and this seems like it checks a lot of boxes for me. I super don't care about the assistant part, so I don't care that it's behind Google/Alexa. I just want a good quality speaker for music and podcasts that can be moved around freely (as long as it can be plugged in of course), and I subscribe to Apple Music.

It does. Homepod is Apples personal assistant. If you want, you can let it compete against the big Echo, Amazon would still win at functionality and I can even hook my iPhone up on it and play music.

HomePod is a smart speaker focused on music playback which uses Siri to play (Apple) music conveniently, with secondary Siri capabilities.

Amazon's devices are focused on scraping as much information as possible from you, what TV shows you have on in the background, etc. so it can sell more shit to you. Every voice request you make is stored on their servers permanently, to be used in whatever way they want. This always gets hand-waved away by people using and recommending Amazon products, but it's a huge negative for people that care about their privacy (both from others and from corporations). This is why I will always choose the Apple ecosystem, even when the technical solution isn't as great.

Yeah. I'd never plant a Google or Amazon bug in speaker disguise in my house either. Shocking enough that, from what I've heard, they are even used in highly confidential environments like law firms or doctors offices. I'll step right back out of your business if I should ever see one. Too bad. I guess I'll miss out on all the awesome trivia and mini games that make their assistants so superior.

That being said, not interested in a HomePod for now. Might get my parents one though when price is more affordable.

Sort of interesting tidbit I came across randomly is that apparently apps can feed into the screen recording widget. Never noticed this before.

What makes Alexa better for me is the same that made the iPhone better back in the day: more stuff than the competition. There's just more accessories, more "apps" (skills) and more stuff to do. I can get Alexa to change my TV channel. I can't do that with Siri.

That goes hand in hand with Siri's (and Apple's) general closeness and unwillingness to play ball. Also Homekit restrictions, although that is getting better.

Don't care much about the privacy stuff. That's mostly a wash these days

So picked up a series 3 lte and AirPods today. Still looking into all the features of the watch but so far so good. The AirPods are really great. I'm often out in the cold and the wireless aspect is great.

I had to charge my 6s Plus today because the battery was draining so fast. I don't see any apps taking up so much power in Settings, and it's up to date. I had to take it in last November before the battery program and the throttling got revealed, so they just did the diagnostic and told me I was at 89% health. I've had it do the thing where it jumps percentages when depleting.

I think I'm just going to suck it up and take it in and have them do the battery replacement to see if that helps. I did a restore on the phone but that didn't fix it as well. Because the drive is a bit, and I know supplies are low because more people are doing the battery replacement, is there a way to call in ahead of time or anything when making the appointment so I make sure they have batteries in stock so I don't have to make multiple trips? And, what's the turnaround time on having this done? Is it same day, a week, or what?

Also, one of my AirPods today started outputting its volume slightly lower than the other, so the sound isn't centered. I have no idea how this happened. It's been bad times in the Apple world for me this last 7 days.

They won't have any batteries in stock, full stop. Call AppleCare ahead of time and they'll put an order in for you for that store, and the store will contact you when it's available

You are aware that Apple sells also ads on the AppStore? And that Siri datas are also stored on Apple Servers?

Lol, it's almost like complaining about the phone battery fixed it. Yesterday it only went down 4% between 11am and 10-11pm when I was home, today I've been listening to music for a couple of hours now and it's still at 95%. I did uninstall some stuff and I've been force closing some apps in the recent apps drawer that I feel like might be doing something in the background and that I don't use very much, so I dunno, I guess it could've helped.

Fingers crossed it doesn't suddenly go to shit again.

I wish withthe Siri Watch face I could swipe away the shit she is showing that I'm not interested in? Like why are you leaving a photo album memory from 2 years ago as the first suggestion? I looked at it and it still won't go away

That's alright, I own an iPad Pro 10.5, it's a fantastic device, the 120Hz screen alone is worth everything. I was only asking you to wait because the next one is about 4-5 months away, that if they release this summer.

Nonetheless, enjoy your new iPad.

I actually think Face ID on an iPad might not work very well if you have to constantly flip the orientation if you pick it up wrong. It's an occasional annoyance with the iPhone as it is.
