I find Discord very confusing. I can't follow dozens of chat channels, what am I a hacker god? Forums are way easier to read and interact with.

This. The readability of forums is far easier to read and interact with. Discord, is of course, great, but only for small groups. I don't actually care for the big groups and the large chats that I can't be arsed to read, especially when they talk about thier daily life.

My group migrated from Skype to discord for our gaming shenanigans and we all appreciate the persistent threads and chat rooms we can build and curate.

Everything about it is just better than the alternatives.

Doesn't make sense to keep a whole forum up and running when you can use Reddit. IRC isn't as polished as Discord.

Sites like Reset Era make sense for broad topics, but for smaller games it makes more sense to have a Discord and a subreddit.

Discord is great for social gathering

Completely different experience than game threads and message boards though.

Doubting we'll go away in our lifetime tbh.

As a 90's kid, I'll never give up on traditional forums! (Also Winamp, and I wish MSN Messenger didn't get eaten by Skype lol.)

I don't like discord personally, and I hate that some OT groups try to corral you into it. Like, if I wanted to chat with people instantly, I wouldn't have joined a forum, you know?

Reddit sucks butt cuz all people care about is their attention and upboats.

Reddit is absolutely a forum. It's a radically different style of forum compared to a classic one, but it has way more in common with normal forums than Discord or Twitter do.

Like, compare the front page of Era to /r/Games. They're pretty similar.

I can't consider it a forum because replies only exist based on whoever bumps them up and other discussions in the same thread fall to the wayside.

Did Reddit kill forums?

Forums have been around forever, and they have longevity for a reason.

I think Discord is more of a replacement for crappy chat boxes than anything.

Social media killed internet forums years ago (FB, Twitter, Reddit)

This and gaf are probably the last well-populated gaming forums on the internet.

There are still a few of decent size. GAF and Era are/were on a different scale, but the old juggernauts of Gamefaqs, IGN, Gamespot are still kicking. Penny Arcade is great and in good shape (and has the same tendency to be as off-topic dominated as we are). VGChartz (remember them?) is still around, in spite of the site owner's utter neglect the community is still decent-sized and rolling along.

Isn't this like saying chatrooms killed forums? I don't see how they're the same as they do things very differently

It pretty much killed what little activity another forum I used to go to had.

Dont use Discord for that particular forum anymore though since not like much went for that discord room :p.

But Discord can get chaotic when it comes to discussions - I still use it to get in contact with some old former guildies of mine to catch up on what we missed over whatever number of weeks since we last got in contact with each other with.

Other than that, dont use it but I can see the value in using such a platform, its well made too.

I suppose if it was 10 years ago I would be more willing to use it but nowadays I dont bother cause I dont have as much free time as I used to.

yeah, i used discord to get onto here, but i don't get the hype...it's a chat room

there's tons of places for that, though i get a lot have gravitated there. i don't read chats like i do threads...forums are hurting cause they're a web 1.0 leftover and not for everyone (and i say that loving them)

Discord is the new IRC, just like AIM, ICQ, Skype, Line....I think it serves a different function to message boards. Many of my discord posts are linking to stuff here.

I never saw Discord as a replacement for message boards in general. Maybe it can be better for specific communities, but I see no reason to use Discord for everything. It would be hard to have real discussion. I will continue to use forums, wikis and faqs for information about games etc.

Message boards were killed a long time ago by youtube and social media. There's only a couple worth even using. Its been niche since smartphones took off and people migrated away from their keyboards.

Nothing on this site represents the majority. Its niche.

SteamERA has their designated threads and a discord. Both serve pretty different purposes.
https://discord.gg/NkKvqy

I really see Discord destroying IRC (whats left of them) more than forum communities.

Discords are only bad for info because the people in charge of the channels can't be asked to actually pin info, at least from my experience. There's definitely room for both Discord and message boards, but the latter are dying in a way that may be impossible to recover from.

It's killing communities within message boards.

It killed the Destiny GAF community before Destiny 2 had a chance to.

Discord either moves fast like twitch chat or it's a circle jerk with 3 people talking and 50 watching or not paying attention.

Either way - discord sucks.

Fuck discord.

no, social media killed message boards

but message boards have a place on the internet so they're not really going to die

these are my takes here

I can't consider it a forum because replies only exist based on whoever bumps them up and other discussions in the same thread fall to the wayside.

yeah, like reddit is fine for info but participating on that format seems like booty to me
also the communities they let thrive are embarrassing

There's definitely room for both Discord and message boards, but the latter are dying in a way that may be impossible to recover from.

hey guy
they can't be that bad if you're moderating such a big one, pal

It has a effect for sure but it's hard for me to say. I grew up with forums but I found most of them I used to interact with too small and slow in terms of news flow and quantity of content before I found GAF which was basically my sweet-spot, I always had something new to read when I wanted to but it was also easy enough to follow what I wanted to follow. Now Era pretty much is the same to me and I love it here for the same reasons plus the notification-system makes things even easier.

I don't like Reddit all that much, the idea is great but the execution is not for me. The upvote and sorting system still feels confusing to me after many years and even sorting comments with "New" instead of "Top" sill makes things feel like a disjointed mess and it's hard to follow things. To me Reddit also feels really impersonal for whatever reason as if any poster is just a random name while here on Era I have a much easier and better time remembering people and actually feel connected to them.

As for Discord, I love it in theory, so many people, so much content and input and always something to do, read or reply, but yeah that's only the theory. I am member in over a dozen of servers because I would have a legit use for them all but I barely interact with any of them out of fear to miss anything. Discord moves so fast, when people talk to you they often won't use @-mentions so you have to keep track of everything manually which becomes really stressful and, for me atleast, it often feels like work. It's a shame because I'm a member of so many great communities there I just have no idea how to keep up with them without it requiring a ton of free time :/ (And I also hate how Discord is forced to be only one window, let me have servers and DM chats in their own window if I want to, it would atleast help a little bit)

I do not want boards like Era and wikis to go anywhere and hope they can eventually keep their footing and co-exist with Discord. Both have their merits and it would be a shame if message-boards and wiki's fully disappear for the sake of "progress" when they actually can supplement each other pretty well if done right.

No, it's great for small specific communities but if you have too many people in one discord channel, like in several "official" Reddit gaming discords, it's rather pushing me back to forums immediately cause in 80% of all times, nobody reads and responds to your text and questions cause it's scrolling so fast and if it's one minute old and people have to scroll up for more then a few seconds, your post is gone and forgotten. It's not even close to what forums can give you. It's his own thing.

If Discord gets a makeover, like not meme loading lines, it could be even bigger. I've seen some people use it for group classes and other non-gaming activities/topics.

Discord is gaining traction for sure. But I think the thing holding forums back is dated technology and poor mobile support.

there are new solid options out there that give a great user experience in a more conversational fashion. NodeBB and Discourse are great forum options with a new twist. Something like Flarum has great potential as well.

Discord doesn't really seem comparable to forums/message boards to me. Once you get more than a handful of people in a Discord chat it becomes an untenable mess of people talking over one another, like a slightly less horrible Twitch chat.

i mean, they've been "dying" for over 10 years now, no? i think the crowd that utilizes them may have a cap, but the way this place thrives tells me i'm not sure where that is

that said, i get discord with communities - the retro & other communities we had on GAF were a bit livelier
Admittedly I might be still thinking about the discussion we had in the fgc thread, where people were lamenting how forums for fighters basically ARE dead (at least until SRK moves to its new servers).

Using Discord to get tips and such for fighters requires dedication that a lot of people just don't have. It's something that I don't really have a solution to, but I've also abandoned message boards for learning how to play fighters and have gone to YouTube since the visual medium does so much more.

I'm totally lost on Discord. I don't understand how it work. I don't understand how to follow the discussions, unless it's just like a chat room with no sectioned threads. A chat room that saves everything.

It's a lot better for very small communities, ones which you see that barely get a forum post a month typically end up getting regular discussion on Discord servers. However for anything above 100 people or so I very much think Discord is completely unsuitable, it's impossible to try and catch up on discussion and useless for browsing.

facebook, instagram, twitter, etc ... all the reason why people don't login to actual forums (besides Reddit)

i personally love forums, and i'm a member in a lot of different communities (ign, bodybuilding.com, ultimate guitar, etc)

i think Discord in particular is still pretty niche, not everyone uses it ... yet
and i don't think they can replace forums, since they just don't have the same charm as, let's say, this place

A few forums I used to go to are now really inactive or dead thanks to most people migrating over.

Discord is a lot more informal though. And usually forums are for bigger news and events. At least that's my take.

I like message boards because I can save/bookmark a thread and come back to it later. Discord is cool, I use it to keep in touch with family and friends, but for some reason I still prefer IRC

Discord is great but more for smaller groups than large communities. Of the servers I frequent, the ones with big communities I usually only pop into to see major announcements as its just too much to keep up with the chat there but for smaller groups I can it works great for that. I would say it has done more damage to irc/skype/teamspeak/mumble than forums though because it's basically grouping all of those into one application.

As for forums themselves I think the biggest harm to them came from subreddits. I miss the days of every gaming community having their own unique hangout forum or community site that popped up and won out above all the others. Gotfrag for cs, the Planet- sites, stuff like that. Ever since Starcraft2 and the huge spread/awareness of it's subreddit it's like every game community just forms around the subreddit by default.
