Since everyone is on the topic of Metroid Prime...

Speculation: How would you feel if Nintendo released Metroid Prime Trilogy HD on Switch this year, and then released Metroid Prime 4 in 2019?

Do you think that would be a smart idea? Do you like that idea?

I bring this up because Sony released Uncharted Collection in 2015, and then they released Uncharted 4 in 2016.
Personally...I have all of those games in their original and on Wii U VC (as the trilogy). I still have a GCN, a Wii, and a Wii U, so I can play them all just fine (and have countless times). If I'd just played them a couple times or owned them only on GCN/Wii, maybe I'd buy it again on Switch. As it is, maybe I would still but...not a particularly exciting release for me.

Pretty much none of the Wii U ports are going to be exciting releases for me and I'm just looking forward to FE, Octopath, and (hopefully) DQXI Switch this coming year, so far. Maybe SMTV or Prime 4 surprise me and come out this year. Maybe Nintendo puts out a compelling 2D Mario or Mario Maker. Maybe there's something else in the cards that will excite me but atm it is looking like a lean year for me, especially if DQ Switch falls through. But...Nintendo is going to announce things and I just need to see what they are.

I don't think, expanding the question from myself, that it is a bad idea, although tbh, Prime sales decayed over time and it could well be that starting newcomers on Prime 1-3 will turn some people off. Might be better to release them after a hypothetical Prime 4 that keeps people's attention better. IDK I hate saying this because I don't like thinking about what could be done to pervert Prime into an attractive product. Everything people come up with is basically "make the game worse."

Well we got Mario Tennis Aces for the first half. What if Nintendo asked NLG to make a new Mario Strikers for the second half? That would be awesome.

While i originally thought it was going to be a new game, I'm very much starting to think that Smash Bros. Switch will be an enhanced version of Smash Wii U with a lot of new content. If the rumors are true, Bamco is hard at work on Prime 4, the Tales Switch game, along with Soul Calibur 6, as well as having teams on Pokken and Tekken DLC, I definitely can't see Bamco having enough staff to make an entirely new Smash game, I think there's no way it's not a port, at this point. 2 years is more than enough time to add tons of new content, though. I'd expect for the game to be pretty massive.

Going back to talk about Prime. I think Prime 4 will likely be the best selling 3D entry of the series. Switch users as a whole have shown they are willing to spend quite a bit on different games, and considering "Prime" is a critically acclaimed series that relatively few people have played I think interest in the game will be pretty high and many people will give it a shot.

Even looking at the top selling games of last year, you can see that established IP's/nostalgia will sell, but so do GAAS style games, and considering that Nintendo has fully embraced that model with most of their new Switch games, you can probably expect Prime 4 to do the same as well.

I think Prime will give you, your traditional single player campaign, but probably also includes an online element as well. I'm thinking something like Federation Force with maybe a similar gamestyle of co-op squad play. So like in FF you had a team and Samus was doing something on her own, but for Prime 4 maybe the single player is Samus's story and the online play is what's going on behind the scenes with the FF. And Tanabe did mention way back that FF, is something like a prequel to future prime games.

Isn't this what Metroid: Samus Returns was though? A game to tie people over until MP4?

I thought maybe the next Direct would be a Fire Emblem one focusing on heroes updates, warriors DLC and the Switch game. I guess not now, as they are doing this

Nintendo's GameCube games on Shield are running on emulator.

So they really could have a GC VC on Switch without much trouble... But we'll see!

Would Nintendo make more money from a VC subscription or just having people buy games outright?
Personally, I only bought a few VC games. I'm sure with GameCube VC I'll be buying a lot more though.
I don't see why it wouldn't be apart of Switch Online if it were a subscription, however. For now, it doesn't seem like that's going to happen.

Hmm... I suppose it depends on the quality of the HD remakes and how similar in tone they are to MP4.

The thing about TNDC was that as it included a late Gen7 game (UC3) the gap in gameplay/presentation wasn't all that drastic compared to UC4. Metroid Prime 3 is 10 years old and feels even older due to the Wii's specs. It may also be much more work due to it not having HD level assets.

As good as these games are, they suffer from the "Not Halo" and "Not CoD4" problem that relegates them to niche/alsoran status when compared to games of their time period.

You could build some hype, but unless you completely remake the trilogy from the ground up using modern FPS conventions (and cinematography) its just going to remind the general audience how dated these games are and there wont be cutting edge graphics/animations or personality driven voice acting to distract consumers away from that oppinion like exist in TNDC.

I think it would be better for Prime 4 to get renamed and place itself as a quasi reboot of the series. Let Prime 4 be the entry point for the general audience.

I wanted to talk about the Retro and David Wise rumor. The more I think about it it could've just been David doing some new music for Funky Kong in the TF port. I think another possible scenario is Retro is doing a new IP, which is finished and now David has come in to do Retro's next game, which will be DK.

Or it could be a combination of doing new work for TF and a new DK game from Retro (after retro releases a new game this year).

So, I'm backing away from Retro doing 3D DK lol. First that's way too many platformers for one year (especially with the rumored NSMBU port too). Second that feels like too much DK for one year. I'm going back to Retro doing Diddy Kong Racing, which fits better since it's still DK themed, but a Racing game or they have a brand new IP.

Maybe Retro is sitting on whatever finished game they had with the other composer they worked with, and now they are developing a new DK game with David Wise as the composer, for launch on 2019 or later.

Would make sense to me, since I don't think they would be working on two games at the same time.

Yeah. This year is getting a bit crowded with 2D side-scrolling platformers.
I agree. I have no problem with Retro doing a platformer, but that's way too much for one year. Nintendo has been on a roll.

Yoshi, Kirby, DKCTF and now NSMBU. That's enough for one year. 4 is pushing it. That's why I definitely believe Retro is working on a new IP or another Nintendo IP that's not platforming.

That's what I'm thinking. They brought him in for new music for the TF port and besides this they've been working on a new game for Switch, which is complete now. Now, they're bringing David back again to make a new DK game to release maybe 2020 I'm thinking.

Sadly none of there is out there, they all sound like really conventional platformers.
None of the IPs were away for to long, and the playstyle stayed more or less the same.

I dont think a 3D Donkey Kong game is gonna make buyers think the year is crowded with platformers. especially if it outsells many of the 2D platforms coming out

If Retro is working on another Donkey Kong game—and I'm all but convinced that they are—it's going to be a 3D platformer. Whether it launches in 2018 of 2019 will depend on what else Nintendo has cooking for the second half of the year.

no, there's a someone saying that it's happening, but he's been dodging getting verified. allegedly he gotten some leaks in the past. emphasis on allegedly.

best not to believe it for now unless someone else with a better record corroborates it

NSMBU would be strange to me as I'd think they'd be hard at work on a new 2D Mario for the Switch that'd come out 2018 or 2019. Maybe it is just that they're doing MM instead so reuse NSMBU to get that early 2D Mario out.

IDK. I get that people didn't have a Wii U but it gets boring when all we talk about are ports :P.

Why would Retro be sitting on their new game when the first half of the year has like almost no games aimed at hardcore Nintendo fans (Kirby and Mario Tennis being the only ones that come close).

This would probably the best possible time to release their new game if it was ready.

You know, posting these things from LinkedIn or developer websites with no context is both incredibly unhelpful and suuuuuper annoying.

It could just be a new NSMB game. I mean, we got rumours of a Splatoon port to the Switch but it was actually a sequel

True. And the rumor could also be wholly false and off point. It is just if it were true it would be a bit of a surprise to the way I'd been thinking.
