Kyle is still a GOAT podcast host for me solely because of how consistently aware he is of the audience. He's always demanding the panelists to extrapolate more details anything he feels an even smallest portion of the audience might not be aware of. He tries to make the show as enjoyable for listeners as YouTubers do while watching.

I think Mario Odyssey is great but man... Breath of the Wild is an incredibly special game to me. In a year of 10s it's still quite easily my GotY, and I will be surprised if even Mario tops it for EZA. I do think Mario may have an advantage for coming out closer to the GotY discussion though.

Doing improv classes helps. I wish a lot of other podcast hosts would take the time to learn skills on how to engage others and be entertaining. First thing they teach is being attentive of the present, which a lot of people don't bother with and they'll ramble/daydream/not fully engage. Dude has an often over-looked skill.

Are you Jim Sterling ?

I am one of his many personas.

6/10 is harsh, lol.

I would give it a solid 7.5 though. Lots of good stuff in there, but lots of stuff missing as well. Cut down the shrines by half, focus on putting in a story and a protagonist to care about.

It sounds harsh but to me, it's an appropriate score for a game that I got burnt out on, only saw half the content and lost all motivation to continue in.

I liken that to walking out of a movie half way.

Funny thing is, the physics playground you mention was my biggest issue with it. It's far too limiting of a playground for me since most stuff I tried never worked, which is a huge no-no.

But ah well, Mario is here. I'm enjoying that a lot so I wouldn't mind it sweeping with other games like Divinity getting some shoutouts.

I'm happy with Mario, Persona or Zelda winning (that order is my preference). I don't think anything else comes close.

I'd take Nier too but I doubt that will happen :P

I just hope they don't rush their GOTY pick this year, as they did last time around. It doesn't need to come out in 2017 - it doesn't even need to be in January of next year. Give the Allies time to play the games, and make an informed decision afterwards.

My preferred format would be: 12/12 - the long list. The reason for this cut off is that it puts it before the winter break, but late enough that the vast majority of 2017's games are covered. The last of the really big hitters - Xenoblade Chronicles 2 - comes out 01/12. I wouldn't be against the lock being at 01/12 either, honestly.
Allies each submit their favourite game from the last 12 months, blind. If there are multiple picks for the same game, so be it. There are 8/9 Allies involved in this (depending on whether Don wants to / has time to be involved), so this should probably narrow down to a long-list of 5 maximum. I'd imagine there'll be multiple picks for Super Mario Odyssey, Zelda and perhaps Persona, with maybe a left of field pick from Ian, Ben or Don. Making it a blind pick though means that Allies will only submit what they truly believe to be the best game of the year - they can't go with a left-of-field pick just because, because it means their actual favourite game may not make the long-list. The long-list is then discussed, this could maybe take the place of a regular Tuesday Twitch stream. This is the opportunity to bring up games that came close in their minds, why they didn't pick that game over their long-list pick, and as well justify their long-list pick to the others.

Over the winter break, Allies would then be able to put some hours into the games on the long-list, or revisit them. Knowing which games are in the discussion beforehand means that there is no excuse for Allies going into the final GOTY discussion uninformed. It would be a huge shame if Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is legitimately fantastic, but only Ben can make the case for it, due to him being the only one having played it. It becomes not a discussion, but a speech - which while nice, isn't conducive to finding the 'best' game. I'm not saying Allies have to fully play through every game on the long list, but at least give them a try, or look through some reviews on other outlets - what were the criticisms? Were they justified? This second GOTY discussion, discussing purely the long-list, and with blind voting at the end using a '3 points to top pick, 2 for 2nd, 1 for third' based system, would come in January of February. The discussion would be better, more informed, more authoritative, and perhaps even slightly more evergreen (if the common criticisms couldn't be levied against it).

This is probably a fever dream, but hey.

Onto something completely different - who's reviewing COD: WWII?

I have a feeling that only a couple of the allies will get the chance to play Xenoblade Chronicles 2. At least before the GOTY discussion.

If anyone follows EZA, you know exactly where they stand when it comes to sexual harassment in the industry. Between the clear disgust displayed at DOAX3, the banning of Beach Peach Splash and the ensuing chaos, Ian's regular championing of women in gaming, and Bradley Ellis moving over to ResetEra, it's blatantly obvious.

What Kyle's refusal to discuss the topic means is that he doesn't care about NeoGaf drama as much as you do. There's nothing wrong with that. But just because he doesn't talk about it doesn't mean EZA doesn't have a stand on the matter. They clearly do.

Honestly, how it comes across is that you want explicit approval from EZA to feel good about making the decision to leave GAF behind, which isn't their job. We all made that call and I wager we all feel good about that decision. I don't need to hear Kyle tell me that I did a good thing because I've already decided that for myself. GAF is bleeding out. The results speak for themselves. Harassment is going to leave your business gutted. Don't do it.

This is a really blunt and fantastic post! I feel that especially towards the end there, there was always a bit of a pervasive insecurity to the "proverbial hivemind" which was on the one hand, constantly acting like an emotionally injured younger sibling seeking tacit approval/attention from the industry/and it's entertainers (like EZA) and on the other, constantly "surprised but strangely smug at the same time" that said industry noticed them and would call them out by name.
It is of course fun to be recognized, but that sort of passive aggressive groupthink mentality is really toxic long term, and I hope that never happens here.
(Of course no single person there was necessarily like this, but through being a lurking observer there for many many years, it seems that the command structure of the site itself generally incouraged this strange dichotomy) I feel that "the incident" was simply the straw that broke the proverbial camel's back, so to speak, and I hope that here- because there so far seems to be already much more transparency and openness, that things never get like that. On a positive note, I didn't know Brad was already here, that's awesome, any other Allies here as well yet?
L&R everyone

Cool, thx Lycan!

I think some people listen to them while exercising but that's crazy to me

Lol, I thought I was the only one who did that! I often consume FT, CoJ, the podcast or TTE this way, although I think TTE especially is better if watched with full attention. Sometimes, I'll rewatch an episode of Escapades later because I realize I missed something ultra funny that had happened.

GOTY is confirmed pushed to 2018 to give time for everyone to play what they need to. Jones reverified this a couple of weeks ago when asked on Cup of Jones.

you would think that but after browsing around their forums and their discord i found some people with stances that are the complete opposite of the people that make up this group and their motto of 'love and respect.' maybe that's why i'm disappointed that, when presented with the opportunity, they decided not to start a conversation with their audience. and let's be honest. neogaf is a small, tiny, minuscule part of it. i was without a place that collates videogame news for me, boo hoo. that's not the real story or discussion here, it's the issue of sexual harassment within the video game sphere (and outside it too). also why do you presume it's about me? if i wanted explicit approval from EZA i'd probably participate more in their forums or the twitch chat.

Isn't this also so games that dropped really late in the year (like December) are considered as well? I'm pretty sure around E3 the Allies said that Goty's would be done early in 2018 so it's more similar to how the movie/tv award shows like the Oscars and Emmy's do it.

Caught up with their Sony PGW stream on Youtube. Seeing their reactions to Last of Us trailer was quite funny. Blood and Damiani were clearly (and understandably) disturbed, even turning away their heads a bit and Jones having an audible reaction. But then Kyle watching the trailer with a dead stare, not even blinking, just cracks a joke with monotone voice "press square to clip wings". And I thought Huber was the psycho of the group! I'm actually little bit bummed we didn't get his reaction too. He was probably salivating while watching that.

Yes, I believe so. The main game Jones mentioned making room for was something like a Persona 5 which is over 100 hours. This is probably in response to last year's GOTY where I think Ben, Blood, and maybe one other Ally played The Last Guardian (EZA's 2017 GOTY) only for Huber and Ian to dislike it after finally getting around to it during the Winter Break.

I think Odyssey, BOTW, Persona 5, Nier: Automata, and Horizon are guaranteed nods. Huber is going to make a STRONG case for The Evil Within 2.

We don't have an Xbox One X yet. (hoping we'll get one though) Assassin's Creed review was done on Ubisoft's machines at the review "event."

Arguing over Zelda scores? Listen to Ben's words of wisdom.

Speaking of Ben, I missed not having Frame Trap to listen to last night while I cooked. It looks like I'm going to have skip a chunk of it today as I've not bought Odyssey or Wolfenstein yet :(

Haven't finished Frame Trap yet, but I can confirm that they do a good job avoiding Odyssey spoilers. Haven't started Metro Kingdom yet so I'm still pretty early, but they explain their opinions without going into details that would ruin any surprises.

I'm sorry, but Nier doesn't have "Rivers In The Desert". Or "Last Surprise", or "Life Will Change", or "The Whims of Fate", or "Beneath The Mask".

Oh yeah, on the podcast host/moderator topic. I always thought Kyle was best in the biz, until Ben started Frame Trap! To be fair, I still admire Kyle's talent of being a moderator and think he still excels in specific things related to that. But I find Ben's personal takes to be more thoughtful and having more interesting questions to the panel.

I 100% agree.

Persona 5 music is beautiful. Don't get me wrong. We'd be arguing over which God-tier is better.

Nier hit me harder though when I was playing the game. Thats what seals it for me.

There's been several occasions where I've just had the 10 hour video of the rainy Beneath The Mask theme while just chilling in the house.

Persona 5 has definitely got my vote, such a punchy yet chill soundtrack.

I feel similar, though I haven't completed Odyssey yet so that could change, especially since I hear the later kingdoms are amazing. But I just feel so strongly about Zelda and really enjoyed the change-up of the formula. Love exploring in this game and finding tons of secrets, it just feels so good to run around the map and glide about.

I agree.

Kyle is absolutely fantastic but I also prefer Frame Trap because the discussions are both more meaty and intimate. The EZA Podcast tends to be more topical subjects that the Allies sometimes aren't completely familiar with so discussions can occasionally fall into fluff territory where it feels like they're trying to kill time.

On Frame Trap, because the panelists are discussing personal experiences with games, shows, etc., the conversation feels grounded and allows me to sink into their passions about specific games. Case in point, The Evil Within 2 discussion from the last Frame Trap and hearing Huber gush and Ben and Brandon present counter-points felt super engaging to me.

Well shit :0, you might make me do the same thing.
Yeeeep. Heard so many good things.

Plus it seems Sega is interested in remaking a good deal of the others, so I thought sure, why not. I'll support them.

Anyone have any good beginner tips?
I didn't get very far in, but the game is pretty tutorial heavy to start, they do a good job of teaching you everything you need to know.

Rush fight style is best style

I only have Yusuke's theme. I didn't realise each theme had a different track until recently. Ngl I would prefer a more relaxing track than the one that comes with his theme. :P

Patreon day. As always I'm very happy to support the Allies but I still can't summon any enthusiasm about the $10 pledge reward. I hope it gets a rethink.
