Story mode is shittt.

I somewhat feel the same way but I just fought Cell and that encounter was pretty cool. If the story mode was solely the major encounters with a dash of clones, it would be more enjoyable.

I hadn't played an Arc game before but I thought people swore highly of their story mode, everything in Fighter Z is so static during cutscenes. Hopefully as more characters are introduced things get better
Gameplay though is still hot fire. I'm terrible at fighting games but I want put some time in this one to get good.

Guilty Gear's story mode is the best in all of fighting games... cause there's no dumpy vs AI crap. Shits just an anime season length cutscene.

And it's also the worst at the same time, because you just sit there doing nothing for hours and hours. It's terrible. Single player modes need gameplay, I didn't spend $60 to watch a bad anime.

Hell, the story mode combined with ASW dropping an English dub from the US releases (and their predatory DLC practices) is why I stopped paying for Guilty Gear games entirely after Xrd. I love that series, but they've killed the value entirely.

Story mode is too damn long...
Yeah.

I mean, I appreciate the story. I like the character interactions from both the main scenes and the extra scenes, but it drags. The fights are just super simple and the map and moving around it seems unnecessary. I would've preferred it if it was like Guilty Gear where it's just an anime movie but they could've just added in the necessary fights.

My main story mode gripe is that it forces you back through so much tutorial material. The first thing I did is go through every tutorial in practice mode, and now I feel like I'm being punished for it with more time wasting.

You don't actually have to do the tutorials in story mode. They're just light challenges for extra zeni. If you don't want to do them you can just beat up the enemy as normal.

Yeah, same here, legit went for the basics on training mode and I find myself replaying the same sections on the story mode.

That's why I haven't touched it yet.

I know, but in order to get to story advancing fights in the early sections of the game you have to go through the battle tutorial stages on the map which are meant to be super slow-paced learning opportunities, and I just hate wasting time. I know I can just beat my way through them, but I wish I could skip them altogether.

Where is everyone going for combo lists? Ive been doing a universal combo, but it doesnt work for everyone.

I have also yet to pull off a team assist combo. Any idea on how to do this? Also - how do you DHC?

Is there a place / discord / hashtag / google doc where people compile tech or character specific resources?

Has anybody seen or utilized any Tien resources? Thinking of replacing Goku Black with him for an anchor but his solo mix-up potential and his normals seem pretty limited. His one bar command grab is pretty low reward for its cost, especially on a dude who should be stocking as much meter as possible. He's got some neat stuff, like Volleyball Fist being able to choose sides, Chiaozu's telekenesis for a full combo if they're full screen, j2H~ j236B as a non-smash air ender, and of course the "fuck it, burn it all" Neo Tri Beam round ender. But he seems like without assists someone can essentially just block him and wait his pressure out, sparking be damned.

I finished the Super Warriors Arc in story mode but I'm still missing two characters apparently and my completion is at 79%. Anyone know how to unlock them? I've already started the next story arc but it's bugging me seeing the other one incomplete.

Damn that was quick lol. My man. I saw a couple of Uri's Tien posts but missed these. I didn't know 5S had that advantage on block. It looks slightly negative, but it looks like it's still a really good pressure tool and can set people up for failure if they try to mash. That's exactly the kind of stuff I'm looking for, thanks.

Anyone have any guides or videos for optimal combos for 18 and Ultimate Gohan?
There's a fair amount of 18 videos on Twitter if you search around.

Offhand, in numpad notation I've been doing:
midscreen: whatever into 2M > 5M jc j.LM djc.LM2H H(super dash) j.MH
corner: whatever into 2M > 5M jc j.LM djc.LM2H > j.214M (airdash last hit) j.LLL

I end with auto combo for the corner combo cuz it gives hard knockdown. You can follow up with super from here.

Could probably do the j.2H > j.214M extension midscreen but I haven't practiced it much.

Haven't played Adult Gohan.

I really need to stop using autocombos. I try to do more optimized ones but usually drop them and start mashing an autocombo when I'm panicking. I wish you could turn them off, that way i'd at least be forced to do manual combos.

The worst thing about the game so far are the hideous dub terms used even when playing the game in Japanese during the single player. WHY???

What I'm saying is that you don't HAVE to do the training objectives even when they pop up in those battles. You still win if you kill all the enemies, the only thing that changes if you do the training objectives is you get a little extra zeni.

Maybe it's not ideal, but I don't think it's the worst system. They do fight back eventually if you beat them up enough.

Just went through the tutorial and damn there is so much to learn. I feel like I'm just mashing and cool shit is happening but it isn't really fulfilling. I have yet to do character combos so that will help soon. Also using all 8 buttons on the stick is kinda overwhelming, although I might bring it down to 6 and use the short cuts for the other stuff. Fun so far!

Also it didn't recognize my Madcatz TES+. Had to go to Steam setting and set it as a generic controller.

I wish the story mode was harder. It seems like the enemies don't even attack most of the time. I fought a lvl 13 kid buu clone with a team of lvl3's and he barely touched me...

Just did a few Arena matches. Only fought the same guy three times.

Are Arena matches popular?

I like it, but that's mostly because that's what I'm only good at. I have no motivation to keep getting my ass whooped on online and prob won't. Online usually makes me want to sell the game right after story mode. I feel like people are just so spammy but they're probably not, they're just really good at keeping me in combos and I'm bad at getting out of them.

I really appreciate how simplified the inputs are - it reminds me of how shooters simple their controls after COD4.

I'm so bad at this game.

If you haven't played fighting games might before it's certainly a learning process.

The best advice I've heard for getting better at them (really it applies to improving at most things) is that, if you have a rough match, try to focus on how you could have done better in some part of it. So, like, "If I had blocked more I would've done better", then set yourself a goal of handling that part of the match slightly better next time.

Blocking is a good place to start. Try to get comfortable with special move inputs too.

I'm maining Tien so fucking hard. Going full "got nothing to lose" mode with neo tri beam and obliterating your opponent is THE BEST.

Right now it's him and Majin Buu, not sure who else I'll pick to round out my team.

Tien is fucking amazing in this game. Great assist, good lows, That Neo Tri-Beam he can pull out can completely destroy another character, even with the life lost.

Gonna see a lot more of him at the higher levels for sure.

I run him point too cause I haven't seen much in the way of meaningful damage without assists (or level 3). If you end up in a 1v1 scenario with 7 bars and him on anchor then you're golden... but if that ain't the case it seems like it'd be a bit of a struggle.
That's the beauty of Tien, I think he accels both as a point and anchor. That's why I keep him as my mid(he has a solid assist) so I can be flexible with his utilization. I currently have him in between 18 and Frieza; wondering if I should replace 18 with another point...?

It's kind of funny how both times a board game-esque single player/story mode has been received pretty negative for almost the same reasons. Budokai 2's board game is very slow, has a ton of filler fights, and doesn't follow the series story too much; it does its own thing. And, well, the execution in Budokai 2 is also just bad because there aren't even really any major story cutscenes anyway.

Jebus, the Story mode is quite good so far. Just got to second arc and I'm super intrigued with what's going on.

Man, going back the last couple pages. A lot of Tien love. It's awesome :D
