Jet Set Radio was the game I played on my Dreamcast that made me think "Wow, there's really not enough buttons on this controller. I need way more direct camera control."

The Dreamcast controller is not a great deal different than any Xbox or really any modern controller, so I am not sure how you could think that. The only games that are really significantly harmed by the controller in a modern sense are probably third and first person shooters.
Uhhh or any game with camera control lol

PSO is seriously awful in 2018. The controls just flat out suck.

I mean, I adored that game when it came out, and even then I hated the controls. They took some getting used to and after a while my handling had improved, but still. I didn't dig it. It's more a matter of opinion since I see what they were doing w the momentum and stuff.

It's frustrating at times, that's for sure. I hardly played it on the original Xbox because I didn't own one or like what I played at my friends, but did beat it last Gen.

I fought the controls though

I maintain that Jet Set Radio is terrible. I think Shenmue is too.

Just about any Dreamcast game that needed a second analog stick feels garbage.

I see the hot takes are as garbage as they've ever been, looks like going by the past few posts. Honestly, it's not even conductive to a good discussion if you're gonna hottake but have zero substance behind it.

I mean, this is a video game forum. Every second person thinks they have a total monopoly on what defines "good". There have always been shitty hot takes, we just didn't have a name for them.

Most of the posts above give the term a very clear-cut definition lol

To each their own.

This and the other thread that said RE4 sucks, makes me believe there'll be a new "Final Fantasy 7 sucks", or "Zelda: Ocarina of Time sucks" thread soon.

Being a hipster is cool, I guess.

I'll admit that I was surprised by how clunky it was when I played the PC port for the first time. I definitely did not expect it to feel that way. I got really good at the training area, though. But then I had some niggling frustrations in the main game.

I enjoyed this a lot, and my first experience with it was on Steam just a couple years ago so it's not like I'm blinded by nostalgia or anything. There are definitely a couple of rough spots, and its aesthetics and charm to carry it somewhat, but I found myself able to acclimate to its controls fairly readily and have a lot of fun with it. I've heard Jet Set Radio Future really fine tunes the controls, I really wish I had a way to play it.

btw if OP was complaining about controls. Man, you should steer clear of gunvalkyrie - one of the worst controlling games of all time. That somehow its fanbase managed to turn into "you need to get good". That's a shitty control system.

OP was banned b/c they tried ripping the game apart playing it in a shitty browser with a control scheme it wasn't built around for, so their complaints about the controls were pretty much invalid.

Gunvalkyrie doesn't even have anything to do w/ JSR so why bring it up? Besides, if its fanbase likes the game, and they're okay w/ the controls, that's all that's needed. They don't need people who otherwise don't get the game to gel in agreement for them to appreciate it. It's just not your kind of game, why shit on the fanbase and Gunvalkyrie over it?

I honestly don't get this mentality; you can still appreciate a game even if you suck at it or understand why others like it if it's not your cup of tea :/

tbh i liked the first level and liked each level after less. great tech, music was good (jurassic 5) but the spray paint mini game sucked and had diminishing returns for me after the beginning. felt like a tech demo (to me)

Tetris? It controls like shit. There are no cutscenes, no DLC. They don't even explain how to play the game. I'm sorry guys but this game sucks.

The frustrating controls combined with time limits caused too much of a roadblock for me and I gave up on the third level. I have it on Steam but I had the same problems on the Dreamcast.

Now theyve perfected Cel-Shading this game needs a new sequel, awesome slick and smooth mechanics. Cancel any non-Mania-esque Sonics and do this. Now.

Gunvalkyrie's controls are great. Yes, they take time to get used to, but they offer you a great degree of control over your highly-mobile character, function perfectly without any dropped or eaten inputs, and give you all the tools you need to overcome the challenges the game throws at you.

Agreed. Dreamcast fans really hyped up their games and then we played them on re-releases and the rest of us were WTF. Apologizes of "you had to be there" doesn't excuse fillling up the Internet with gloating over these games for a decade.

What old tosh, You played Tomb Raider, Resident Evil back the day, they control terrible but were mid 90's games. It's like knocking Shadow of the Colossus on the PS2 for its controls and crap camera. system Games age and so do their controls in a lot of cases, especially ones that really push the envelope

i really recommend AGGRESSIVE INLINE if you're hunting for a good skating experience. it has these huge interesting and weird areas to explore, new secret areas you unlock by completing goofy challenges (eg, skate on the chains holding up the statue, it falls over, breaks open wall, boom, secret science lab), and an awesome, awesome soundtrack.

it is uglier than JSR, but a far better game. and better than any THPS game by my estimation. what a shame that it has been forgotten, and that there are no games like it anymore. i spent hours racking up points chain grinding the fuck out of levels and singing sublime.

If you played Tony Hawk Pro Skater and then go to JSR for the first time, yeah its uncomfortable

My personal take on it is that it takes the intro stages to even become interesting - the tutorial is as clunky as it is typical of its era, but once you get past that and start to understand just how you can interact with your environment, it begins to sing.

Unfortunately on Win 10 the Steam version simply will not retain my save, so I'll never be able to get too far into it. :/

Yeah! It's kind of like they made it sim-arcade rather than just ape any ol third/first person shooter that Sega given other games was clearly capable of doing if that's what they actually wanted. I'd love a ZOE/AC style game with these controls! The Dreamcast version was going to be crazier than on Xbox with utilizing a lightgun for the weapons aiming in conjunction with the controller. They wanted Wii style games before Wii! Well, Capcom had done similar with Gun Survivor but clearly not in a fast paced agile game like that.

So good.

If I think a game is good upon release, I almost always still think it's good several years later. The only difference is that enough time has gone by for some asshole to accuse fans of nostalgia blindness.

I think THPS2 shits on JSR from a great height, but let's be realistic here

Texture quality, environment detail, and general art style are all way better in JSR. And that's a modded THPS2 screenshot too, don't forget the draw distance on the OG version.
I meant JSR with better graphics and so on. And as you can see here THPS levels are just very blocky. No wonder that didn't have camera problems, while JSR had a lot of small corners...

Honestly it gave me that gorgeous soundtrack and style so it get's a pass. Plus Future improves it on almost every level and is way more fun to play. We just need Future released on PS4/Vita. :(

I loved the game. In the beginning it feels bad just due to how the momentum works with the character, but it's supposed to not be pinpoint accurate and it's supposed to feel like you are controlling someone on roller blades. I think the JSR games are both great, even if the controls aren't amazing. The whole game is about completing a perfect line around the level getting all the graffiti spots in a row. It's crazy when you memorize all the locations and can do it perfectly.

Had to resurrect this thread because I've had the misfortune of playing JSR now, and it's literal fucking hell. Each level is more hateful than the last, and you never feel like you have more than minimal control (often, you feel like you have absolutely none whatsoever). To be honest this should have adopted a Crazy Taxi style approach, and made it all about time attack and removed all the enemies, who seem woefully out of place and turn the experience into one of sheer misery.

It's got bags of style but it's torture to play. Torture.

Between this and Sonic Adventure its clear Sega didn't have a clue what they were doing in the early 3D era.

I still can't wall ride on this game, so I've never finished the tutorial.
You need an astrophysics degree to calculate the correct angle to hit the wall.

Keep at it OP, it took some getting used to for me, but as you unlock characters: use them and you'll see they improve substantially movement/control-wise.

I owned jsr for a long tome but I only beat it this year. I'm so glad I persisted, I found the 1/3rd rough but it's so satisfying when the game finally clicks with you.

I'd recommend the tutorial mode and messing around in there + getting the achievement/trophy for completing it.

Hope JSRF reaches modern platforms somehow (backcompat or remaster), I've not played that one.

My lord the bad takes keep coming.

People forget that JSR is momentum based. You can't just hold the stick forward and play on the fly. There's a lot of really cool tricks and adjustments the more you grind (your speed increases the longer you grind.)

I 100%ed the game years ago and enjoyed every second of it. It was challenging but not unfairly so. Every time someone complains bad controls I wonder how Dark Souls ever got popular.

The most fun I had with the game by far was when I finished it and exclaimed "now get the fuck out of my life". That moment was almost worth the agony.

I had nostalgia eyes when I bought this on PS3, it was so bad compared to when I watched it being played with googly eyes back in the day.

Sad times.

I always had trouble with the platforming and the time limits. It was more frustrating than fun for me.
