Yeah, just caught my new steed Jerry, and he's got it on right now without taking it off Freddy. Go nuts!

Oh my, the DLC "path thingy" really shows you how much you missed. It says I have explored just 1/3rd of the map... holy cow. I think I'll continue to just go to named places I missed since I still have no "open world fatigue".

Try to think out of the box and experiment. The game lets you do more things than you can imagine.
The tools you get access to from early on are what make this game amazing, play with them as much as you can: solving puzzles in the world to fighting enemies, they'll help make everything feel way more creative than simple action based combat of older Zeldas.

Have fun with it!

Thanks for the replies. I didn't get to play much last night, but I walked around the plateau for a bit, cleared one shrine, located the other 3, and LOVED EVERY DAMN SECOND OF IT. I can already tell trying to juggle this & Odyssey is going to be a pain.

I got this game for christmas and I'm loving it!

The only way to get those awesome past games costumes is with amiibos? I only have the Toon Link Smash amiibo.

Afraid so (at least the Link ones and Shiek's Hood, the other throwback costumes from the series are in the Expansion pass), that being said; they're great designs but generally a pain to level up when compared to the in-game clothes, each requires a Star Fragment per level up, so say you're getting all of your Toon Link Wind Waker clothes prepped, you'd have to A) actually luck out and get the clothes (bearing in mind once you got a piece, you have to wait until tomorrow to use the Amiibo again), then B) for the Cap, Tunic and Trousers that's 12 Star Fragments and a lot of rare gems. Also, I think they can't be altered in colour either, so anyone wanting the Red/Blue/Yellow/Purple call-backs are out of luck.

Compare that to, say the Hylian stuff you can get in Kakariko, cheaper, accessible, and also you can alter the colours. I rocked A Link with the Hylian Hood and Gear in green, giving him what I think is the freshest re-design of his look.

Edit:

Odyssey first imo, primarily since it's a way quicker game to get all your enjoyment out of, BotW, being an open-world, is gonna sap a lot more time than Odyssey. Both are fantastic!

The game has one green suit but let's just say it takes a long time to get
You get it for completing all 120 shrines

Yeah the path is amazing. How the heck does it record your whole route? Does it ever cap out? How often does it record your location? How much space does it take up?

I think they officialy said it tracks something like 200 hours. However, it capped out for me at about 300. I was really disappointed to start seeing my trail erased, because it straight up looks like silly string all over my map -- and it was really helping me to find places I hadn't gone.

This game is amazing so far, but I need to find some armor lol. I'm still wearing the too small pants you get when you start and the DLC cosmetic Switch shirt that looks goofy as hell.

Is there any story stuff that gives you armor specifically? My next story quest is to head to Kakariko village, but I've just been running around finding shrines.

edit: or maybe I'll go after one of the DLC armor sets. Hmmm...

If you have the DLC then yeah, I'd actually highly recommend a lot of that stuff. There is an element of challenge to getting them too, so it's not like the game gets easier by having the DLC.

There are walking Guardians all over Hyrule Fields, where the bulk of that DLC armour is located, on top of horse riding Bokoblins. Not a lot of hiding places outside of ruins, and one particular armour set, the Phantom armour, is gonna put you in close proximity to a Lynel, which if you haven't come across yet, are amongst the most challenging enemies in the game. That's not to deter you, just that I had about a whole days worth of playtime just finding these things when I started my second playthrough.

Beyond that, the now iconic gear setup you'll likely have seen in a lot of art and promotional material is actually on the very questline you're on: the Champion's Tunic, the Hylian Hood and the Hylian Trousers are de facto what Link is often seen in in this game, and are amongst the easiest to level up.

If you've gone the route the game nudges you, the Dueling Peaks, I'll point out there are several shrines near there, one I think had a piece for my favourite gear.

Thanks for all the info!

Hey ERA, finally got some time to play this game. I'm not a fan of open world games, but this is fine.

After going to Kakariko, I went to Zora's domain and finished its divine beast. From there went northeast to the ancient lab, got a memory, and tried to go to death mountain, but it's too hot for my clothes. Tried cooking some heat resistance food, but I still can't travel to it.

Any tips on where to go now? Should I try other region, or should I try to find some appropriate clothes to go to death mountain? Thank you.

For Death Mountain, I'm actually more and more annoyed by this concept in the game the more time I've had with it; heat resistance is a natural opposite to cold resistance, but near the volacano you need a weird 'Fire Proof' buff, either through clothing or cooking. The alternative, freezing, is nowhere near as intrusive to a players adventure.

Ramblings aside, the "fire proof" or "fire resistant" phrases in text is what you're looking for to survive any exploration around there. Death Mountain, as a whole, has a bunch of terrain to explore, loved it even though I saved it for the last segment. Fireproof Lizards are a must for cooking ingredients. The main path into the mountain even has a stable that (I think?) an NPC girl offers you some Fireproof potions to get you started. Follow that path and you'll discover a mining operation with a bunch of Gorons and a Hylian in weird old-school diving looking gear. The Hylian will offer you a single piece of clothing that immediately grants you the buff of "fireproof" if you deliver (10?) Fireproof Lizards - at least 10 are scattered within 50m of this man so it's not even a proper fetch quest. Weirdly, having only one article of clothing grants you this buff indefinitely, but the whole armour set is a cool design in and of itself.

All that being said, the most South-Western corner of the map is the most extensive area to explore for lore and plot in the game, and the Middle-Western area provides the best Champion's Ability outside of Mipha's. Beyond that, if it's just balls-to-wall exploration, the Southern Central into Southern Eastern parts of the map are where I fell in love with the game out of sheer variety of things to do and see.

Thank you. I'll try to find the gear. I barely go to the stables since I don't use my horse.

Oh stables are a great source of little QoL additions to the game. A whole lot of NPCs offer their own little quests (sometimes even revealing shrines), or allude to details for larger quests and/or mechanics of the game. Many have a poser showcasing a recipe that is useful - usually for the benefit of exploring the surrounding area. On top of that they are a key point checkpoint for a lot of segments of the map, offer menial prices for healing and additional hearts, and are a pretty good replacement for having too many NPCs about in the overworld.

Decided to take a trip visiting every stable by horseback. Already discovered some shrines that I have missed. Will try to get all shrines now that I already have 100 of them. Its pretty weird actually. At about 80 shrines I felt pretty done with the game. Figured 90+ hours of game was enough so wrapped up the divine beasts and memories and was heading for the castle. Then I did a sidequest which required me to get a horse and realized that I hadn't really done a lot of the sidequest in the game. Now I am suddenly really into doing quests and exploring the map again. Weird how that works :)

Just beat Vah Ruta in my master mode run, my second divine beast after the bird one.
The second time around, I'm finding I really notice how unsubstantial the divine beasts are as dungeons. I beat both of them in under 10 minutes, and the bosses were both massive pushovers, even with health regen.
I didn't have any problem the first time, but now I can kinda see what people are getting at when they think the dungeons are boring. I still think they're fine but not nearly as interesting once you know the gimmick already.

Are there any horses with rank 4 speed? Other than special ones like Epona (not using them since they can't equip the DLC bridle and saddle). Can only seem to find ones with rank 3.

I don't have one personally (outside of Epona), but to my understanding horse stats are not set in stone, but there are a few indicators to help you optimise. Spotted horses (which ironically I think look nicer) tend to give off lower stats over all, and the tone of the horses' colour is another key one, the lighter it is the more likely it'll yield lower ratings. Other than that, I'm not too sure where you'd go to look for the best ones without the use of a guide.

Interesting. Yeah I guess it's not that big a deal, I currently have an all black horse with 4 stamina, 4 strength and 3 speed. Pretty good overall (especially with the DLC armor).

I just wish Epona or the giant horse could be equipped with the DLC items.

Yeah, you've got one of the ones that I'm talking about, they often yield 4,4,3 (sometimes a 5) in a random designation, I believe you can even re-load before taming one to try and get the desired stat layout, but like you said it's not a big deal.

Yeah I don't really get why they can't have your armour equipped on them, seems needless since the player's main narrative justification for running around the world is to get powerful enough to take back Hyrule Castle from Ganon. Giant horse is fantastic!

My current horse is called "the horse" so when I whistle, it says "it seems the horse isn't able to come..." like it's default text or something

Reminds me of a famous footballer from my city, who when closing in on retirement tried his hand at owning a horse for racing, on the sole condition it would be called "Some horse" just to hear the commentators.

I bought a Switch and Breath of the Wild at the weekend. I'm not gonna lie, I was sceptical whether I would take to the console because I really didn't click with the Wii U, but I've been surprised how much I'm enjoying it. Anyway, Zelda, it's certainly different but I'm really liking the fresh open feeling I getting from it. I only got the paraglider yesterday before calling it a night, so it's about to open up further. I'm gonna venture around the plateau a bit before moving on, especially Mount Hylia as I rushed through that section for the trials. So good impressions so far.

Yesterday I discovered that if you kill blue chuchus and hit the jelly with an elemental weapon - the chuchu jelly turns into that element. Still finding things out by accident.

Or even just drop them in either burning or freezing climates, if you want to hold on to your weapon durability.

Alongside bombs, that ripsaw move I learnt of recently, chuchu jellies are amongst my favourite little damage dealers for crowds, especially whilst running away.

Literally any direction is gonna be a good call, but if I were to suggest a direction that isn't what the old man told you before getting the paraglider (Kakariko), from the tower look to the south/southeast to see a bridge. That road leads to my favourite bunch of areas on the map, most of which will be totally different types of terrains than you've already encountered. Have fun!

I wondered if that would work. That's great, although I guess doesn't work for electric ones - which was the one I discovered accidentally.

Shugga - ah really? I thought I'd exhausted all those tips by now. There's probably some more I've missed too in that case.

When I was a kid I loved exploring games like Ocarina of Time and Banjo Kazooie. I wasn't very good so there would be a lot of days where I would literally accomplish nothing. But I would still have fun because I got to uncover just a little bit more. When I game nowadays, I have an expectation that I will accomplish something with each play session. However, Breath of the Wild is the first game since I was a kid where I can just accomplish nothing significant and still have fun just being in that world.

So starting over after completing 3 divine beasts half a year later since I originally played on a friend's Switch and I'm having the time of my life. This is truly one of the best games ever made and oh my god I hope some developers take some serious notes on what makes this game so great.

Two questions I'm sure you guys get a ton:

1. I have the northwest divine beast and the Gerudo beast left... which should I do first?
2. Should I buy the DLC? I'm in love with this game but the DLC doesn't sound all that exciting going off Nintendo's page.

Also I love stumbling across ridiculous nonsense in this game. I just so happened to find a GIANT horse while exploring yesterday.

1. Do you mean Vah Ruta in Zora's Domain, or Vah Rudania on Death Mountain? since both could be described as North Western if you're going by segments of the map. If it's Ruta do that first since the Champion's ability can be a boon for Vah Naboris (though all are arguably easy/hard depending on who you ask, Naboris is touted as the hardest boss fight), if you mean Rudania up on Death Mountain, base your next move on preference: Rudania will give you a great defensive ability, Naboris a great offensive one. If it's based on area, the Desert trumps both Zora's Domain and Death Mountain in value of time spent exploring and giving some optional challenging battles and side-quests.
2. Cosmetics are cool, one is utterly broken (though given said piece of clothing, I'd be disappointed if it weren't) so if you're a Zelda fan simply having them is a nice change of clothes, though given you've taken on two beasts already, they won't offer you much protection you aren't already suited with (they can't be improved). Part of the beauty of them for me was they weren't just given to you, but all are scattered across parts of the map with riddles to locate, kudos to the team for not making them a bunch of point markers, or have them just show up in your inventory. The gameplay aspect of the DLC is the meat of it, and it's skewed heavily towards notching up the difficulty of the gameplay, as both are walled off behind certain in-game milestones so as to not ruin new player's games (unlike, say, a Bethesda game wherein the story DLC often kicks in upon purchase, and can be accessed relatively early resulting in a potentially skewed experience). And it's just that; gameplay, both offer small aspects of story, concept or lore, but they are challenge levels to be sure. From the sounds of it, you'd get a kick out of it.

Hope this was useful.

Northwest for sure, assuming you mean Vah Ruta.
Yes, you should buy the DLC. I really enjoyed the story stuff and the QoL improvements are also really nice. Definitely worth playing BEFORE beating the game. Just temper your expectations. It seems like a lot of people were expecting something huge, and it's not. I enjoyed it for what it was, though!
