Zombi U hands down. The Gamepad makes it kind of like a semi VR experience when you use it to scan a room with the gyroscopic controls. It mimics as if you were using the prepper pad IRL. Also when you look down to check your inventory it mimics the act of searching through your backpack which adds to the tension of not knowing if something is coming from behind. The HUD less screen and no crosshair makes it even better. Here's a video of what I'm talking about. I always play standing up in a dark room. I like to pop it in play every so often.

Prepper talking to you through the gamepad was brilliant. It really enhanced the immersion. Also scared the shit out of me one time when I fell asleep with the game on. My TV went into auto sleep mode but the game was still running. I fell asleep for maybe an hour or two and I guess I rolled over my controller enough to hit the joysticks causing my character to move and the prepper to start talking. Safe to say waking up to a deep raspy voice in your ear in a dark room is not the funnest way to wake up.

As for OPs question U no doubt. I rebought the game on my PS4 when it was cheap but it just didnt feel the same without the pad.

Never played Zombi U but currently I'm playing Zombi on Xbox since it's free.

I dunno man, it was physically exhausting and not fun for me. I've enjoyed plenty of difficult and stressful games, but this was a bit too far for me personally.

That's fair.
For me, it's kind of the opposite. I haven't played many horror games willingly. I beat Amnesia, but in 15 min bursts each time. So I guess I'm surprised that I got through ZombiU twice, even though other people find it unfun.

ZOMBI U is the only one correct choice. The best game that uses Wii U tablet to the max.

And this is quite telling, right? :D

From my point of view, the game translated quite well on the other consoles and the inventory gimmick on the second screen is well replicated with the on-screen overlay.

So, I'd easily go with the newer version (and its small amount of additions) over the Wii U version.

Way faster loading on the PS4/Xbox and a much better flashlight make that the version I prefer. I had it on the Wii U and really enjoyed it, but honestly the gamepad is not needed for the complete experience. Looking in your backpack in the PS4/Xbox version works just like it does in The Last of Us so don't let anyone tell you it is somehow broken or incomplete.

Zombi U might just be the best use of the Wii U gamepad. I think for that reason alone it's worth playing the Wii U version.

I've wondered how ZombiU compares to RE7? From a distance they remind me of the dame game and I've only played a few hours of both.

Zombi. Zombi U fov is atrocious and the network features don't make much of a difference anymore.

Zombi U!
Played the game day one! It was really something else. GamePad was implanted really well to gameplay.

I really had good times with the games multiplayer component also.

WiiU version is the one to play.

Looking down at your gamepad for inventory management while the game continues on screen is a part of the experience.

Edit. Forgot about the room scanning too. That was awesome.

Wii U version is definitely the better experience but it's not a massive difference. PS4/Xbone are totally fine too.

I've got both, and I still prefer the PC version.

I really hated having my focus forced away from the TV to the gamepad for the Wii U version. It was clever use of the tech granted, but I just prefer playing on a really big TV and keeping that the focus during play.

People still use this as an argument?

Anyway, moving focus away is always tense wondering if something is going to come up behind you.

It's a perfectly valid argument. I'd rather all the action on the one screen, rather than second screen gaming. It's my preference.

And the tension works just as well both ways as you loose the ability to see around you. On the PC/console versions the screen goes to a close up of you rummaging through your bag, you can't see anything approaching you.

It's the same game but Zombi doesn't have any controller gimmicks and has achievements/trophies.

Personally it's not a very good game though.

The WiiU gimmick is neat for the first couple of times you use it, and unlike most other gimmicks it never becomes tiresome, but it really doesn't add that much to the game as everyone would make you believe. The game just isn't that complicated or deep with its mechanics, and it never expands on the gamepad's usage. It's been a while and my memory has been a little hazy, but what the general idea of my thoughts at the time were is that the way the enemy encounters, level design, scripted and non scripted sequences, inventory management and in game economy worked would pretty quickly take away the stress that the inventory system was supposed to induce.

The game is still a decent survival horror game no matter the version you pick, and should be played by horror fans not because of its quality which is nothing extraordinary, but because of reminiscing the days of this particular style of survival horror games which have been quite scarce these past few years.

Now that you mention it, OP, I would really love to see a sequel to Zombi U for Switch. Probably my favourite Wii U game at this point. I really enjoyed it and made more innovative use of the gamepad than Nintendos efforts except for Nintendo Land.

Huh I never really play horror games but this thread is making me want to pick up Zombi U. My Wii U is already hooked up anyway.

Played both versions and definitely Zombi U is the more immersive experience.

The gamepad is a unique novelty, but it doesn't make it a good game.

It's like when people use VR, there's that 'VR wow factor' that everyone goes through, it's neat when you discover a new aspect of interaction design but it doesn't mean the game is better designed. Bringing the Wii U gamepad up to your face is potentially more immersive, but it doesn't enable the game to escape it's larger weaknesses.

The games biggest issues come from its level design, core gameplay and narrative.

The gamepad uses, aswell as the amazing and unique local multiplayer are what made the game good. On Xbox and PS4 it's a generic zombie campaign that's short and does nothing interesting.

I'm going to try again tonight, but It's looking like my Wii U is having trouble reading discs. Going to have to go with that free Xbox version...

I have both and personally I think Zombi is fine. Losing the game pad doesn't detract from the experience.

I got the Zombi U bundle when I bought my Wii U, was really looking forward to it as it seemed to be my kind of survival horror. Fairly early on there was one section where I think I went to a supermarket and the load times were absolutely fucking bonkers insane. Like 5+ minutes. I ended up having to backtrack there which resulted in 10 minutes of loading there and back. I just can't deal with that and dropped the game right there. So maybe that's one reason not to go with Wii U.

Game is almost free on the eShop, so buy it there. No reason at all to not go for the WiiU version. I also do not get the people who say the Gamepad isn't making that big of a difference. It makes all the difference. Game is totally designed around it. Not only for management, but also for maps, articles and practically everything.

Zombi and ZombiU are totally different experiences. Don't forget that your main screen (the TV) is free from any HUD. This makes it more immersive as well. Sound and notifications are also coming in through the pad. Zombi loses almost all of it's magic without the Pad. It's why the game works.

Besides the defferences, this is a magnificent game with a truly unique atmosphere. If you like stuff like Alien Isolation, this is the game that comes the closest. It's a masterpiece, despite a few flaws.

I found the gamepad usage to be pretty overrated. It's the best usage of the device on the system, but considering the system itself that's not exactly saying much.

It's a cool twist on an old design template, but I wouldn't say you lose anything major without it. The game itself is mostly just okay anyways. It feels like a prototype version of a better game that never happened, which is sad. My first thought when finishing it was "that was a little rough overall, but I can't wait to see what they do with the sequel!"

Lol =\

The whole point is to replicate you going through you bag. Looking down, looking back up to see if something g is happening etc.

The Wii U version is probably better for the immersion, stuff like scanning feels like an unnecessary feature in Zombi. It's like they didn't want to strip away these features, but didn't have any good ideas for their replacements or modifications.

The WiiU gamepad stuff is cool, no doubt about it, but it's not what made the game for me personally though I understand for a lot of the audience that was the appeal. The game for me was the atmosphere, the slow paced very physical movement of your character, the very deliberate combat and how Condemned like the game is. One zombie being extremely deadly to you, almost rogue like. Really cool game, I'd love a sequel.
