Oh no I forgot about the halo.
Is it still going exclusively to Sky next year in the UK? Can't say that will encourage me to keep interested.

I fell out after about 5 weeks last year because the writing was on the wall. Hopefully Red Bull has a better year.

Genuinely curious as to how much of a fight it's going to be this year. Last years Mercedes was unbeatable in the races where they got it properly dialled into the track. If they can iron out it's few kinks and ally it to their new engine, which I'm fairly sure will break the 1000hp mark this season, then it could be another steamroller year for them.

I'd love to see Merc, Ferrari, RB & especially McLaren (well, Alonso!) all fighting it out at the front end but I'm not hearing anything on the grapevine that'll upset the status quo. Fingers crossed Renault can make an engine reliable enough that it can operate at full power this year.

I think if you actually look at the races Ferrari were the most consistently fast across the season, with Red Bull having the best performance uptick at tracks where they could get the aero and engine to talk to each other best.

I think this year is going to be fascinating.

Interesting to see no open driver slots. I feel like there are always last minute spots open. Bummer about the halo, excited about everything else.

Was it? I mean, sure, Merc had the higher peak potential on most tracks, but the way things turned out, they weren't always capitalizing on it. Without that string of bad luck in Asia, Vettel would be ahead or at least deliver a nailbiter to the end.

After 5 weeks last year the table was:

VET 68
HAM 61
BOT 38
RAI 34

After 5 races last year the table was:

VET 104
HAM 98
BOT 63
RAI 53

So yeah, I guess that stroll to victory by 5 time WDC Sebastian Vettel was pretty nailed on.

Both Hockenheim and Nürburgring didn't want to host yearly for financial reasons, so they alternated. Then Nürburgring gave up completely and Hockenheim wasn't prepared to do it either - The result is that there was no German GP in 2015 and 2017.

The Nurburgring literally went bankrupt due to poor management.

Thanks! To bad. Always fun to watch races on tracks you have driven countless laps on in-game. That fucking first hairpin..

I'm talking 2019. From what I can see Sky have committed to 'free to air' highlights and the British GP, but no details on whether the free broadcaster would be Sky or someone else

If I were to guess, Channel 5 will probably have some sort of highlights package, as they are owned by BSKYB. I hope by then Liberty will have in place some sort of streaming service. SkyF1 is just too expensive for me, and you have to take it as part of a package that only adds to the cost.

I like the thread title lol.

Hopefully Alonso can get at a podium or two this year.

Also hoping for Red Bull to be competitive with Ferrari and Mercedes from the start of the season.

The current F1 games are pretty damn enjoyable, so you can get used to the current tracks.
I wonder how Circuit Paul Ricard will play in the games.
Like to drive a little slower.. GT-R style or somthing, F1 to fast. At least we got Sao Paulo this time, fun track!

Nice to see we got a new scandinavian in little danish boi. Is he any good?

I know the engine related cuts have been to reign in budgets to help the mid and low tier teams. As such has there been any estimation how much it'll save these teams in expenses Year of Year?

Magnussen? He got a 2nd place podium in his very first race and it's been kinda downhill since then. Strongly placed in the lower half of the driver grid.
Plus he's probably the most hated driver by the other drivers of the field. He plays rough on and off the track. D:

The lower price at which engines will be sold in the future has not been made public at this stage.

The FIA was aiming at a figure in the region of £7.9m to £9.5m, down from the current cost of around £13.8m to £17.7m, and it is believed this target has been reached.

I honestly cannot imagine engine parts lasting 7 race weekends(!) or more without severely turning down power, but they'll need to. The only way I can see that working is if Mercedes has room to spare like in 2014-2016 or if a Merc customer runs in a highly conservative mode. Probably Williams.

Going from memory here, but I think Rosberg's last engine one year was 9 races or so old by the end. He got a new engine at Monza(?) that immediately failed and had to go back to the previous one. I think he won several races late on as well.

Sorry, just for clarification is that range the cumulative engine cost for 2018? Thanks.

Alain Prost said current price of engines is in the range 12 to 14 million euros per unit in Auto Plus (sorry i don't have access to the subscription content for the direct source).

Reducing number of engines means less units to spread Research and Development costs to anyway...
Mercedes engines division spent 83.4 Million euros in 2016 in R&D. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2017/12/25/mercedes-f1-engines-drive-110m-investment-uk/

"Per unit"- my goodness! I was unaware that a single engine could cost that kind of money. Thank you for information.

You're welcome ;) and yup, they cost en arm, that's why they usually come with advertising compensation, running time for drivers from the manufacturer's academy, or...the team just uses engines from older specifications (like Sauber did last year). that's also why teams want simplification.

Also hoping ESPN gives the series the attention it deserves.

I would love to see how that turned out, as manufacturers have had to keep spending R&D for this increased reliability and probably really hasn't kept costs down. Renault and Honda have also had to design new engines.

The three engine rules is dumb when we've had so many failures and just keeps the Mercs and Ferraris on top.

That figure is per power unit! (Engine elements: ICE = Internal Combustion Engine / TC = Turbo Charger / MGU-H = Motor Generator Unit - Heat / MGU-K = Motor Generator Unit - Kinetic / ES = Energy Store / CE = Control Electronics).

There are talks to further reduce costs from 2021 by possibly removing the MGU-H element from the power units.

It should be noted these numbers are rough estimates, it is extremely hard to find any concrete info on actual costs. Also worth noting is that some customer teams like Sauber will get an engine supply at a discount, essentially Sauber are a Ferrari B-Team, signing Ferrari junior academy driver Le Clerc for the upcoming season.
