FoxNext Games, the video game division of Fox that was formed in 2017, has acquired Bay Area game developer Cold Iron Studios, which will work on a new game based on the Alien franchise. The studio's new Alien game will be a shooter for consoles and PC.

FoxNext called the acquisition representative of its "commitment to deliver new AAA offerings across numerous fan favorite properties and original games," the company said in a press release.

Cold Iron Studios was founded in 2015 by former members of Cryptic Studios (Neverwinter, City of Heroes), including CEO Craig Zinkievich, chief technology officer Shannon Posniewski and creative director Matt Highison.

"Cold Iron Studios has amazing design, craftsmanship and development talent that we are excited to welcome at FoxNext Games as we pursue our goal to build a multi-platform, multi-genre portfolio of great games," Aaron Loeb, president of studios at FoxNext Games said in a release. "I am a personal fan of Cold Iron's previous work and all of us at FoxNext Games are thrilled to be working with them as they create an action-packed persistent world, steeped in the mysteries of this beloved Alien universe."

"We believe in FoxNext's vision and we are thrilled about the opportunity to explore an amazing and rich universe," Zinkievich said in a release. "Our background in building online worlds and taking established franchises to the next level in interactive entertainment is a precise fit with our product roadmap ahead; we can't wait to share more information soon."

Alien video games were previously the domain of publisher Sega, which released Aliens vs. Predator, Aliens: Colonial Marines and Alien: Isolation as part of a longterm publishing arrangement with 20th Century Fox.

FoxNext Games' debut title will be Marvel Strike Force, a free-to-play role-playing game featuring the heroes and villains of the Marvel universe. Marvel Strike Force will be released on mobile devices in early 2018.

Their pedigree doesn't instill confidence. Then again I never thought a traditional strategy game studio could make something as awesome as Alien: Isolation.
Also, does this mean SEGA lost the license?

I'm excited to hear about a new game in the Alien franchise, but I'm also saddened as it doesn't sound like there will be any future progress with Alien: Isolation games. Rarely has a licensed game so accurately nailed a tone or environment like Isolation did.

Still, I'll be interested to see a new Alien game, even if it is just a shooter.

Are these not going to be under Disney? I imagine Disney would just shut it down.

Ok, hear me out:

  • 100 marines land on a barren colony
  • they fight off hordes of XENOMORPHS and also EACH OTHER
  • last marine standing wins

No. Disney said they only bought the RSNs, Hulu, Star, FX/FXX, National Geographic, Fox's movie studio, Fox's TV studio and all of Fox's owned movies and TV IPs which was all they were interested in.

FOX network, FOX News and FoxNext (gaming division) are all going to be Murdoch (that I believe now owns 5% of Disney stock) ran.

I'm cool with a new FPS set in the Alien universe. The last decent Alien FPS must have been Alien Resurrection on the PS1.

However, if it's multiplayer only it's going to have to be something really special to get me interested.

A battle royale mode could work. Different corporations/factions or whatever land on a planet to colonize where they fight over control. Meanwhile, the area shrinks as a horde of xenomorphs circle in on the marines. By the time there's like 10 people left you have to deal with both players and xenomorphs. Maybe killing them grants a bonus or some nonsense. I dunno lol.

Didn't know Sega lost the license. Bummer.
You're kidding right? Because of them most of the Alien and Predator games have been a chore to work on and have not been great.

I'm glad to see Sega and Gearbox have nothing to do with this. Hopefully this will have a decent budget and development cycle.

I am probably of the minority here. But I hope this is an action game based off of Cameron's Aliens.

Damn. I'm just thankful at this stage we got Alien Isolation before SEGA lost the license.

For the people joking about Battle Royale, surely predator would be a better franchise fit for that. Like the premise of people being dropped on a hunting planet is already built in as of Predators.

I honestly can't imagine it can be as bad as Colonial Marines unless it goes into weird territory like the recent arcade game did with its rubbish xeno designs.

So yeah, I'm mildly hopefully this will be good if it takes the base format of something like Evolve and provides an experience that doesn't constantly have players wonder around in circles until the match is over.

Cold Iron Studios seems to have about 20 or so employees. That is a tiny amount for any large scale game, so I don't have huge expectations for this.

When I hear it's just a multiplayer FPS:

If there's a campaign, maybe they can execute something good. Otherwise, I don't know how excited I am for just an FPS with aliens. I liked AVP but that was aliens, humans, and predators all fighting in one match so that was cool.

I just feel like this will probably end up being barebones, will have to see.

I love the idea of a class-based Aliens online multi game. Put a squad into a complex like the one in Aliens and give everyone their own objectives that need fulfilling like turret placement, weapon/ration procurement, sealing areas, calling for a dropship, and so on. And have the xenos be dynamic and unpredictable (like left 4 dead ai director).

There better be playable aliens. A multiplayer alien game where you can't play as the aliens in a waste.

Because nothing screams Alien more than a multi-player shooter, for fuck's sake.

Isolation looking more and more like a beautiful one off, sadly.

There's this relatively popular game on Steam called Depth.

In Depth you play as either divers or sharks. The divers collect treasures as they try to survive the onslaught of the sharks. I'm not doing the game much justice because I haven't played it in a year and a half but It's very reminiscent to Left 4 Dead in a lot of ways.

What I've always wanted was an Aliens game with asymetric multiplayer where you can play as the Aliens or Ripley/Hudson/Bishop/Newt in a similar fashion to Depth, and players on the Aliens team would get to choose their own strains and develop their own play styles to trying to kill the humans.
